Which Aspect Ratio is Most Cinematic?

- *There are consistent inaccuracies in some of the crops for the taller formats by about 200pixels due to the strange 16:10 resolution, they are proportionally correct relative to each other but the precise aspect ratio should be slightly wider: vimeo.com/956567722?share=copy

Dear Ghosts,
Hurrah! My website is finally open to listen to all my remastered soundtracks! I have more content to add but the store is functional if you are interested in supporting me by purchasing my personal LUTs. Music licenses are finally available if you've been wanting to monetize your projects with my music. This will be available through Patreon, which I've designed so that everyone can enjoy, whether you just want to download and listen or use for commercial work without committing to a permanent subscription.

So a few directorial notes for this project, although I emphasize 2.39, I also really like 4:3 and 1.43:1 - basically the formats that crop in and focus the attention more. I would like to add that I think that letterboxing still looks the most cinematic, but taller formats also look good in a different way. I personally think it suits more vloggy type content. Each scene is more like a photo, i hope i can resist the allure of 2.39 and try more of these formats for full length projects in the future. Some of the scenes may look a little cramped in 2.39 because I didn't film in open gate, I filmed 16:9 and cropped the sides to fit 16:10 so the framing might feel slightly off. Why 16:10 and not 16:9? I deliberated this quite seriously since 16:9 is the more popular monitor resolution. Since I as well as many Macbook users have 16:10 resolutions, I experimented with a base 16:9 resolution and the cropped height really couldn't demonstrate the strengths of taller resolutions on taller displays. But i think 2.39 for 16:10 with cropped sides was the lesser evil for 16:9 displays. I hope I was able to effectively demonstrate the differences despite whichever monitor you are using. This will surely look poor on mobile, but that is ultimately unavoidable, I may upload another 2.39 or 4:3 version if you ghosts request it. So which aspect ratio do you prefer?
Love,
CleverG

Only a matter of time till your channel pops off. Production and content too good ~
i am the 6002 and i hope you will get one million more, your work is amazing!
2:1 looks good, is a "democratic" format and gives a little bit of room to correct tilted horizon.
this video is beautiful from each shot to each crop, each music choice, the monologue especially at the end, you deserve all the success
Only if I keep delivering 💪
So much knowledge so beautifully presented. You have such a unique style, always a joy to watch.
I think i still have a ways to go, but I can feel I am developing certain muscle memory for certain shots. Hope I can keep developing it, glad youre enjoying the ride
Congrats on the website launch, looks beautiful!
Thanks for checking it out! Will add more content to it
Watching this video for many times!
Thank you for another insightful and beautifully crafted video.
I have just purchased some of your LUTS and I'm excited to try them out :)
hey thanks! i will also make some free rec709 conversion to optimize the luts, currently available on discord, though i've only made one for the sigma fp so far. Blackmagic and Sony next
@@cleverghostchili nice, sounds good. i'm on the bmpcc6k
@@cleverghostchilipssssht, Panasonic please!
Oh man... this has to be my favorite video of yours. Every shot was beautifully textured and done w/ intent for the aspect ratio. IDK how you do it, but keep doing it king!
Really! Maybe because of the color grading. Always want to spice things up
Love the music on this, great work! it's been cool seeing your channel grow
Right on time. I've been exploring different aspect ratios lately and this was super insightful. As always, great video and thanks for sharing.
Happy to contribute to the conversation. Thanks for watching
Well done and beautiful shots. Idk why but I've been wanting to shoot 3:2 or even 4:3 lately
It really depends on what you want to shoot. I think some of these formats are quirkier than others, and if you want really dramatic closeups these taller frames are much more immersive. I also want to shoot more of these taller formats
You are a big inspiration for me, watching your videos feels like I'm watching a movie and I love it.
Keep it up 🔥
really really beautiful and fitting examples, congrats on 5k!
Couldn’t make it without you
Brilliant, per usual. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words
Beautiful footage
Thank you

Great video man!! 😍
this video is beautiful
Hey 🙋 Ghost !!!
Magic 🪄✨🪄✨ 📽️ 🎥 📽️ 🎥 as always!!
Hocus focus
really really beautiful video
Great video!
Amazing and educational video!! Definitely worth the wait!
Haha this one took a lot longer than usual because of everything else I’ve been working on
@@cleverghostchili well, fantastic work per usual! Lets not George R.R. Martin the next release. totally kidding. Lol
Hey, man. This looks really good. Congrats! Great cinematography.
Happy to spread the love
Accidentally found your channel. I really like the feeling of your videos, keep doing man ❤
Aye, will keep on doing 🫡
What's most important is within the 4 sides of this box. Would cinema be different if film had a different shape back in the day? BTW was this shot on the sigma fp? If so, these are beautiful images👍
Yes, sigma Fp, everything in technical info at the end
Great job
Congrats on 5k Mr. Ghost!
10k and I retire!
Just kidding
I am a 2.39:1 guy deep down but ooo im liking that 16:10 on my laptop.
exactly, very dependent on which monitor you're using, but i too am digging the taller formats, we'll see...
I will never stop being amazed how you come up with these ideas! Great work!
Congragts on your website launch. Curious what I can cook with your luts on my favorite Sigma FP:)
The luts seem to work really well with that camera. I’ll probably make camera specific versions as well my personal rec709 conversation for free to optimize the luts
Great reflections on a complex mix of issues here. I tend to agree wider formats have a more psychologically immersive effect on me. But less so on smaller device screens, where using the whole real estate available is more important than ratio IMO: so on devices, another vote here for 2:1.
2:1 seems to be the play for RUclips. Seems the most popular ratio overall is open gate
I agree with your arguments which is why I prefer 2.39 as my Xperia 10 phone has 1:2.33 display.
BTW it is a great AR for a smartphone: it accommodates more text vertically while the narrow proportion makes it feel like a considerably smaller device in hand.
@@omichalek Now you mention it, I can see that 1:2+ ARs make a lot of sense for reading landscape - I have an older iPhone, and dont tend to update unless there's a feature I want... now you've given me a reason to upgrade LOL!
Lovely work as usual, and great soundtrack. I feel like 2.39 got so overused in 2018, but when done properly, the point you made about periphery stands true no matter what. Just ordered a Sigma FP by the way - thanks for the inspiration!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Great job, how did you manage to get a shaky image?
Good job
I actually still use 16:9 in most cases, but this video makes me want to experiment with the aspect ratios a bit more :)
Same, I feel very comfortable with 2.39, need to push yourself sometimes
More videos please!! And do you still use the BMCC6k? I just bought one and i'm considering the Zeiss Milvus lenses, but i'm not that sure. Your content is the only one that uses the BMCC6k and Milvus/Otus lenses in a cinematic way. I'll love to see more of that. I watched all your videos. Maybe you could review more lenses, like budget anamorphic ones, like the Sirui Saturn or Blazars. I'm considering the Nisi's Athenas but they lack a lot of character in my opinion. Do you use mist filters or vnds?
Next video has considerable bmcc6k and milvus footage, i would say the image on the blackmagic is sharper, I prefer the softer Otus over sharper milvus with that combination, you will be able to judge for yourself. I buy all of my gear so far so I normally wouldn’t buy a lens unless it was very compelling. Nisi Athena are considerably more boring than Zeiss imo. Dzo Arles are very good. I don’t use mist filters, I use a Nisi vnd
@@cleverghostchili Yeah! I Can't wait for that video. I bought the BMCC because they made a 40% disccount on the camera. I want to focus on cinematography only. But i don't know which lenses should i pick first, i cannot even decide between spherical and anamorphic yet. I can't afford the ottus, so the milvus seem very compelling, but i doubt of its performance on high movement scenes, i'm worried about the focus breathing and the lack of versatility. Also the mounting. Do you know about other alternative that looks like the milvus/ottus? And what are you thoughts on the anamorphic look?
@@aumon you can check out my zeiss otus 55 video for more detailed thoughts, but i will say i do like anamorphics like ALFA for their wide 2x and waterfall bokeh. I prefer spherical for their precision and flexibility. You dont always want 2.39 especially for commercial work. Milvus are my recommended value lens, you can also consider DZO, Sigma art, Canon or Nikon lenses. Otherwise you have vintage glass, which becomes subjectively characterful. EF is a fine mount, nearly every camera can adapt for EF just like PL.
@@cleverghostchili I'll check the video again and consider the lenses you say, thank you!!
0:43 that 4:3 is not 4:3 o_o
(edit) 1:25 that "3:2" is actually 4:3
I just checked, you are correct esp the taller formats, luckily they are consistently inaccurate so they are compared relatively correctly. i have updated the descriptions and apologies
i love u
Love received
Dude can you just make a short film already? You're really good at this.
PS. I see you're using the XH2s. Looks much better than I thought. Is it supported in ACES?
this video was completely shot on the Sigma FP, I use fujifilm only for photography now, but i will revisit in the summer when flog2 is supported natively in Davinci. I personally think fujifilm is the best camera when it comes to film emulation particularly kodak and fujifilm film stocks. I think in the summer there could be ACES support, need to wait for the update
No way 😂 I really thought it was the xh2s. You manage to make both cameras look almost equally good
Is it just me or does the sigma fp have dynamic range comparable to the full frame sonys?
@@shueibdahir That's likely more the Zeiss Otus look, which i use for all my cameras. I put the technical specs at the end of the video. You know, the dynamic range feels oddly good, but all test results say it's like 12 or 12.5 stops. I can't say for certain, but it feels like 13 or maybe more, it's very impressive
@@cleverghostchili I have a slight suspicion it's a bit over 13 stops total with 11 being somewhat clean.
By the way how's the sigma in dc crop mode? Does the lowlight capability become worse with crop sensor lenses? I might buy it within the next 6 lonths
@@shueibdahir It is sharper as it is 1:1 pixel readout. To be honest, I think i prefer the softer rendering of full frame, which has some downsampling going on, but looks great. I'm not sure, but I think the lowlight capabilties should be similar, it depends on the glass, t1.4 is t1.4 right
Have you tried 1.618 the golden rectangle? I want to play with it but no camera seems to support it natively for composing.
So this video is 16:10, which is 1.6. It’s not a native camera resolution so I had to crop to get this aspect ratio, I think I prefer a little more letterboxing to direct the focus a bit more
Cinema is a language. Asking which aspect ratio is more cinematic is like asking if using a type of punctuation rather than another makes a text more ‘literary’.
It’s not about seeming cinematic but rather being cinematic.
Yes and no, aspect ratio can change your perspective as much as the focal length of a lens
One type of punctuation rather than another can make a significant difference in a literary text
Let’s eat grandpa
@@m.i.andersen8167Exactly. Bro thought he made the perfect point. If you're at a point in filmmaking where you're looking to enhance your video via different aspect ratios, I'm sure (and would hope) you already know the fundamental principles of what makes a good shot. Deciding on aspect ratios and composing your shots for it is just the little cherry on top stylistically. A more square aspect ratio will likely be more intimate and use a lot of symmetrical composition, whereas a wider one will help you frame things better on each third.
@@ohgeezus_ When I started, only very few could choose the aspect ratio themselves, and even they were not allowed to let important things happen to far from the center of the (wide) frame as it had to be cropped for TV. But as you say, it's always nice that we can now have a little cherry on top!
