Sandcastle Sensei - Behind the Scenes

- We've always said that the best thing about filmmaking in 2012 is that equipment is far less important than an idea and execution. You guys have repeatedly told us to put our money where our mouth is and make a video using only a camera phone and easily accessible software. After hearing this challenge, T-mobile urged us to attempt it and sent us one of their new Galaxy SIII phones for the shoot.

OK but how can I film a good video without goddamn professional stunsmen.
Nearly 3 years and still no post production...these guys probably work for Internet explorer
We just wanted some post production. Maybe they figured out that people couldn't do the castle at the end with blender.
EnterpriseKnight As a user of Blender, you can totally do the sandcastle with Blender. It's not about the tool, but rather the artist.
I was being Sarcastic.
EnterpriseKnight my apologies.

freddie please answer this, did the s3's camcorder ever said failed to record while you were recording?, because that happens to my galax s, please help and reply, thanks.
We were working on the post-production episode, when we realized the scope was MUCH bigger than just a BtS video - more info on this soon...!
Still haven't seen the post production video (even tho I'm sure at this point its probably out of date)
can we all just span their facebook and twitter about the post production video because its been an entire year
***** ???
been almost 2 years now
theduckfu 3 years.
Four years...
I come from the future. It's been 50 years.
You don't need a good camera to make a good movie, shure. But what you do need is good actors and years of experience... you'll probably get a good camera before those.
0:42 IS THAT LITTLE MAC?!
where is the postproduction video?
Wow! That's awesome that you can film something good quality without something crazy expensive.
I wanted to see how you made or put in the epic sandcastle
lol i wanted to see how doe
why your video resolution is so good? how is it possible?
Freddie, can you make another video like this where Clint's kicking ass with his bare feet? That would be an epic video.
Honor among RUclips commentators. I like it. There needs to be more of us.
To be fair that cell phone records in 1080p and has an unbelievable camera so it probably is better than some actual video recorders, but the fact that the video is made in what I think is free software or non-expensive software is amazing as it looked almost like some of the highest quality videos on your channel.
Good Job.
Post process video where are you!!? :( 2017

Try recording with a shitty $50 camera phone with a shitty VGA camera and use nothing but windows movie maker to edit them, that would be the right challenge.
Yes, The windows part, But there are many free editing softwares out there, or very cheap ones, And most people have something with a reasonable camera these days anyways.
2.5 years later and still nowhere to be seen.
That was 'the' Urban Ninja!? I still have that vid on my cellphone, love watching it from time to time!
ending a conversation like a BOSS. we need people in RUclips to act like this!
I wanted to see you guys building the larger castle, that thing was badass.
I appreciate the gesture, Freddie, and I know I can make awesome movies on a low budget... ...But I don't have any ninjas.
yay, didnt realize you recruited such talent. That's super aweseome freddie. I too am curious about the pro sandcastle made at the end.
What Jason Carman said, or if you want to know exactly what they use, they use Adobe After Effects and Cinema 4D I believe.
For recording videos with that ease and quality, it's a great price.
@WaHeyStudios Yes you can, airsoft guns are cheap and look realistic. and somtimes the gun sound is all you need to sell the effect, or you could flash a light in the room when a shot goes off, or you could cut the screen to black, or shoot from an angle where you wouldnt see a muzzle flash, but i used to use a free program called vedeopad that let you layer a muzzle flash image so you could do that, it was a little difficult to get it to work with that software though
I am SO waiting for the postproduction part. Hope you'll be able to do it.
I understand your point. My point is that your point is irrelevant. The point is that a video filmed on a phone camera (a phone that someone would by as a phone, not a powerful camera), can turn out well, just like one filmed on a good camera. Honestly, if I had to choose (and I think most people are with me here), I would choose to buy a phone that can entertain me, let me communicate, and also shoot decent videos and pictures over a product that specializes in one.
Shooting a video with my new (at the time) iPhone 4 was what got me into this madness.
OMG URBAN NINJA!!!!! I remember that video...always wondered what happened to him. Time to rewatch it.
VGHS was a 9 episode series. Originally there wasn't going to be anymore, but I think Freddie, Brandon, Matt and Brian (and the rest) are going to be doing series 2 :) Hope that helped.
I still come back to see of they have the post production video...
That's the Urban Ninja!!!?! Holy Crap I didn't know he was still making stuff! AWESOME!!!
Whoa. I have the exact same phone in that exact same colour yet I didn't know the camera in it was that good. Imma go test it out later...
Like video for Xin, Dear god, it has been a while since I've seen that awesome dude anywhere.
Freddie with smosh t-shirt is AWESOME!
Brandon said at the beginning they were going to use iMovie. But you'll have to wait for the post-production video.
Since there is so much time past there must be a whole lot of things they said and showed.
Brandon, I know you'll read this, but look at all the comments about the post production video that was never made. Also I noticed you never made the behind the scenes video for Power Hour....was really looking forward to that one almost 5 years ago
You are soooo right. My MW3 video was shot entirely on my ipod 5 generation. My computer was not used AT ALL.
that guy in the BG at 0:30 is like "omg, they are filming me!!! Gotta show off me epic invisible guy beating up"
I love how seriously the guy explained the architecture of the first castle
So what did you use for the audio? I tried to make a couple of movies but it always sounded tinny, like an Eye-Bot radio in Fallout 3.
As a long and faithful viewer of, and subscriber to, your videos, you should know that I was very excited when not only did you show some excellent tips on shooting high quality video using low cost equipment but also made a promise to show some of the ins and outs of using consumer software to achieve professional results. Now imagine my disappointment and dismay when after three months of anticipation and interest, my curiosity still has not been satisfied. For all our sakes, please upload it!
true photographer/videographer take any angle, any place, anytime without caring their life for a good picture/film just to entertain us :)
In case you haven´t noticed - Freddie and Corridor digital are friends, and they have made a couple of vidz together.
Xin was the urban ninja!? Wow, he's really grown up! Time flies ... and now I feel old -_-
Me neither, too lovey for me :P Well, when series 2 comes out, I'm sure it'll be full of the same badassery as series 1 :D
I’ll see you in 6 years
I can't believe I have waited 2 months for a post production video....
That is actually smart. I could start doing that if I get that phone. Really high def quality.
Btw, I knew there had to be a trick to how he did the "in the air kicks" at 3:18.
They used imovie for this video. (except the sandcastle thing at the end) All of the editing were just cuts between clips that can be done in imovie or if you have a PC it can be done on windows movie maker. Though I do advise you check out premier elements and sony vegas platinum for cheaper video editing software.
You can use Windows Movie Maker, but it is a linear video editor. I would suggest lightworks for a free non-linear video editor (this way you can add layers). For 3D modeling/tracking/particles/simulations/physics I would suggest Blender. And for sound I would use Zynewave. These are all free (some have limitations). Hope this helps.
Premier pro is used for editing, After effects *should* be used for post production editing, such as adding explosions and whatnot. It shouldn't be used for general editing.
Mobile phones today has kind of good microphones, and Galaxy SIII is top notch, so i'm not surprised if it is from the phone
it is, but its good at the same time, it shows you don't need fancy stuff to be good
well, it can still be a separate audio recorder and they can use iMovie... but I am pretty sure they used other programs than iMovie, since that motion tracking at the end can't be done in iMovie, and also the "paning effect" can't be done in imovie.
Still waiting for the Post Production video!.... :) Common Freddie and Brandon.... we need this.
Please do more commentary, they are so helpful.
Can't you see that this is his 2nd channel!! The "promised" video is on his first channel.
Any update on the post-production episode? I'm still very interested to see what software and techniques you all used for this video. Great job btw.
HOLY SHIT XIN! You guys need him in more videos!
Look at this freddie, a lot of people here in Spain spend a lot of money in cameras, I have a Galaxy SII and I make different types of supports for this camera and for example, any gameplay in my channel or any other video was made with this mobile and supports.
they must have an entire wardrobe of smosh shirts because smosh probably said"if you want us to be in a video, you guys have to buy all of our T-shirt" anthony said
omg xin, brings up some good memories
I know. But in your previous comment you said you use software to film it when, as you just mentioned, both are needed.
Guys they are not saying that samsung galazy is cheap they are saying that you dont need some pro camera or pro editing software you can use movie maker as well and you just need some camera and a software you can cut with
Show the Post Production Video! I've been waiting Foooooorevaaarrr.
Good job, i think you guys are just magical, however what easily accessible software did you guys use to motion track the sand castle in the last scene? i would love to know for my own project I'm working on...
How do you handle the sound quality? Or are you just using the phones mic? You dont mix it or anything like that at all?
What are you even talking about? The only post production vfx in this one was the big and little sandcastles in the very last shot. Maybe a little color correction, and then some sound effects. A Post Production video for this would be pretty dull.
still waiting for the Post process video :) this is beginning to feel like waiting for Episode 3
Depends on a lot of things like a upgrade or a new 2 year contract so in some cases the phone can be only $200-$250
Clinton Jones is actually the name of a character in the show White Collar. Pretty dang good show.
howabout the dope opening shot that was all stabilized and hi def? was that the phone too?
CONGRATZ ON 1million subs on this channel!
when you did that video a long time ago called action movie sound design and u said that one of your favorite thing to layer in with gunshots was laser zaps, were did u get those laser zap sound effects? btw i think u guys are the coolest people ever
Freddie, I noticed the original video has some pulsing going on. Is that the autofocus?
Adobe after effects is amazing, but expensive. You can also do quite a bit in windows movie maker 2012
i cant believe you guys shot with xin sarith azuma phan wuku
Freddie wearing a smosh t-shirt!!!! awesome!!!
Well I think since the phone isn't primarily a camera you can get a camera that is comparable for significantly less.
I haven't looked into it so I don't know for sure, but I'm just guessing.
i loooooove that Smosh shirt!!!
nice, i used to watch that urban ninja video all the time years ago
Probably software that is available for the public, and doesn't cost as much money as the software or extras that businesses use. 3DS Max and Photoshop for example are not cheap programs. And there are actually free software that are very good; take the 3D program Blender for instance
I was hoping this video would show how they got Clinton to appear in one area and then suddenly appear in a different area but they revealed how Freddie and the crew made Clinton appear to be floating and kicking at the same time. GG Freddie.
How did you guys get the good sound quality? Was most of the voice acting done in post production? Did you get the ambient sound of waves from the cell phone as well or a separate audio recorder?
omg i remember watching urban ninja years ago. bit of nostalgia there.
Sorry, have to ask, did you put the second sandcastle in later? Or was it some kind of model?? :)
doesnt have to be that specific phone, the point was that a prolooking video can be made on a modern average day to day cellphone.
I wanted to see you guys build that giant sandcastle.
T-Mobile is a site to buy phones. which decoding the sentence, the Galaxy S3, that T-Mobile provided.
Freddie you and Brandon inspired me to make movies.
OMG The urban ninja! I looked for that video a long time ago and couldn't find it!
What consumer level colour grading software did you use? It looked pretty good.
i wonder how many times they had to rebuild the sand castle....
I know we don't need to buy a very expensive camera to make cool movies, but what camera(s) do you use? I've been saving up for a nice camera and was wondering if you could let me know. thanks! Love your videos! I would enjoy more LAN party minecraft videos also!
Fun Fact: The Urban Ninja is part of the dev crew for [Super] Monday Night Combat
How the hell video looked so crisp and smooth only using Galaxy S3? Did you sharpen the footage a lot?
You also had stunt experts and reliable actors!
Freddie I love your videos and I love the comments you made about how you don't need anything special to make these great looking films. My brother who is my partner really needs to hear this. I really wish you could give me some keys tips to making something look "professional." I Know you are going to have a post production behind the scenes which I am really excited about because I feel that this is my weakest skill when making a film. I would love some feedback. Thanks.
