- Lenovo cut some corners on the Legion 7i Gen 8 (2023) compared to the 2022 model but it remains one of the most solid gaming laptops of 2023.
In this review we compare the RTX 4070 model against the 3070Ti and 3080Ti models from last year as well as see how it performs against competing RTX 4080 laptops such as the MSI GE78HX, Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 and Alienware m16.

Stephen, I own last year's Legion 5 Pro with the AMD 6800H and the GTX 3070ti. It has been a very solid and trouble-free machine with great all around performance. This laptop you are reviewing is an amazing deal for the specs. This a great machine in a sea of flawed gaming laptops from Alienware, Asus, etc!
I agree! Glad you like your Legion 😀
Have you ever tested the Corsair A1600?
Got the 4090 for about 2300 open box from BnH, but had to manually apply liquid metal to the GPU as it's only on the CPU. Not that it needs it, but wanted a better application of both since out of the factory LM can be a bit dodgy. Biggest gripe with it is the keyboard buttons really tire your fingers out on extended typing. earlier gens felt much better despite having far less key travel. Also area around the keyboard/trackpad is plastic not metal. That 13900 is incredible though. Can out perform my OC desktop 12900k by quite a bit. Really shines in emulation couldn't believe just how much headroom there is for the CPU performance. managed 31900 in cinebench which is just unbelievable, not sure why yours are significantly lower something may be a bit awry on the unit or some background processes?
Thanks. Yeah, I was surprised by my low score even when it was at 135w and 3791 Mhz. Is yours at a higher clock rate then? It was the full 10 minute run I did.
Hello there, Mr. Manley
Great review! I have been wondering, does the 4070 model have the vapor chamber or not? Also, the liquid metal is only on the CPU?
Thanks! I show inside at 06:17. There is no vapor chamber on the 4070 model. Thermals are good on both the CPU and GPU, I believe liquid metal is used on both.
Great review as always👌
Hi Stephen and congrats for your good job , can you please guide me for an Casual gamer (I do play only WoW and i heard is more CPU demanding) between Lenovo Legion Slim 7 Ryzen 7-7840HS RTX 4060 and Asus ROG Strix G17 Ryzen 9-7845HX RTX 4060 ( scare of back light bleed and coil whine stories) or even Lenovo Legion 5 Pro Ryzen 5-7645HX/Ryzen 7-7745HX RTX 4050?
All Legion's are 200£ less than ROG Strix 17 and better display , around 1400£ in UK thank you.
This is a great review showing all the pros and cons. At this price point, this laptop would meet all my needs for being an "older gentleman". I really like it. Thank you so much for such an informative review! I like being able to use quiet mode yet still having other options. 2 huge thumbs up my friend!!!!
October 7 and I am (finally!) reading that this is out with the Ryzen 7945HX (maybe just 4800 and 4900?)...that should be interesting...but I can find no reviews. I've ready the max RAM is 32GB....but elsewhere 64GB. Perhaps it really is only 32BG for some reason?
Have you ever experienced the issue that some keys appear twice when typing, like when I type gaming it becomes gamming? Is this common on some models of Lenovo or it just happens to mine?
I haven't experienced that on any of the Legion laptops I've had. The only issues I have had are with the track pads...
Great review, the issue with the Legion for me this year was removal of in built Windows Hello features and even a plastic touchpad instead of glass, yet it was still 5.9K to configure here to similar spec as my GT77, except with 32GB ram instead of 64, and 1TB ssd instead of 4! So really it was just as expensive, for a cheaper built, smaller machine. I still think my 2021 legion 7i was a bargain and that./s what I'll travel with. Paid 2.3K AUD with 32GB/1TB/11800H/3070. Still a great laptop to this day and I believe that year and 2022 were built better to 2023 pre the budget cuts.
Edit, I made an error, just checked current pricing. It's 5.6K as above but with a 4080 instead of the 4090 of my MSI GT77. So spec for spec it's more expensive than a 4K 17" laptop. Weird.
4090 not currently available in OZ. It used to be. The 4080 is the sweet spot anyway, but not for 5.6K. More like 4.8 ish in the Asus examples.
I know the RGB doesnt really add to cost, but its nice to see them skip the silliness on the lid / in the vents. Lenovo's build quality, I/O layout, screen quality, and performance/cooling have all been top notch for 2-3 years now - I feel like if youre looking for a top-performing machine, care about build quality and dont want to spend 3K on a Razer then Lenovo seems to be the brand to beat at the moment.
Also glad you acknowledged how obnoxious getting into the older L7s was - I still have Ram I cant install in mine because I cant get the bottom off!
I hope companies are sending you review units now
Thank you for your review and your expertise.
Can you help me in making a decision on a 4070 laptop?
My budget is around 1600 GBP and I am looking for a laptop for gaming as well as working.
Can you suggest me the best one among the current alternatives (which also I am not very expert about), please?
Thanks
Thanks for watching my video! I certainly liked this Legion 7i Pro, if you can get a discount coupon code then it's worth a punt otherwise it is a bit pricey especially with no windows hello. The Legion 5i is cheaper, runs a little hotter (about 80 deg C on the GPU) but it is also quiet. Has a smaller 80wh battery.
I really like the MSI GE78HX and GT77HX Titan, although they don't have advanced optimus which is a shame. The Alienware m16 and m18 ran hot and has an inverted motherboard which makes it harder to repaste. Out of the two I preferred the 18" with its mechanical keyboard.
The Asus Strix Scar 17 was a fingerprint magnet.
My favourite is actually my Cyberpowerpc Tracer VII. It is the same as the Eluktronics Mech 17 GP2 and also the PC Specialist Recoil 17
www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/recoil-VII-17/
You can buy a water cooler for it that just cools the GPU I believe. I have the water cooler but not used it yet as it doesn't really need it.
It is quiet, all metal build, advanced optimus, great speakers. Webcam is 720p though. Has mechanical keyboard. It is clicky which I like .
The biggest problem is that my first one had speakers that didn't work and the second one was giving me a power error and would freeze. Third one is great. So much depends on what service you get from PC Specialist.
Lenovo has the best tech support, closely followed by Dell . Lenovo is much cheaper to extend the warranty and that is something to consider.
@@OWNORDISOWN I really appreciate the extensive review! Thanks a million!! You did not mention a model the ASUS TUF A15/16 RTX 4070 16GB AMD Ryzen R9-7940HS. How would th4 models you have mentioned compare to this one? Thank you very much!!
As always a great review!
Thanks Harry!
Great thorough review.
What are your thoughts if we compare Legion Pro 7i 4070 with Helios Predator 16 4070 with same specs ?
Thanks! I have not tried the Helios 16 yet but do have the Helios 18 coming so I could probably judge more then. But I will say that I was very impressed with the Legion 7i pro. It cooled very well and wasn't loud doing so. Nice screen and great software options. It will take a good machine to better it.
great video🎉
wow, this is the one I am going to buy!
Dear Santa, it's me again, look at this video and call me hahahaha
Nice review Stephen! Every aspect of the laptop in a single video!
Those mixed results compared to lower generation cpu and gpu are kinda weird, but overall the device looks great and even better if it's more quiet this time
Thanks! Yes, it's a laptop I wouldn't mind keeping. Wonder if they will forget that I have it, lol
@@OWNORDISOWN 😂
I own Lenovo Legion Pro 7, I have been using it for 1 month with i9 and Rtx 4080 12 GB. It is a very nice machine. It is thin and it is exactly what I wanted. As someone who has used Asus MSI before, it is the best Lenovo!
Is the keyboard deck plastic or metal?
I actually believe it to be plastic
Looking on almost same spec. What would be better choice asus rog strix scar 17 or lenovo legion 7 with rtx 4080, 32gb ram assuming price is same.
Are you sure it does not have a fingerprint reader? Mine has one. Model 82Y3003HMZ
I don't have it now but I looked at the Windows hello sign in options and it wasn't available
Got a great deal on the Legion Pro 5i i9-13900hx / 32gb ddr5 5600mhz / 1TB nvme / 240hz 500 nit panel and the RTX 4070 for $2141 CAD all in from B&H!
good review but man did they have to cheap out and remove the vapor champer come on
Thanks, glad you liked it. Appreciate you watching 👍
can you do a comparison with the legion 5 pro
Sure, I have 3 Legion systems to do first
@@OWNORDISOWN looking forward!
Brother why are you not using dlss if your gonna do benchmarks do it all properly
how much fps on games like valorant or csgo?
You are going to get a lot, over 150 fps easily
@@zoupzz I just reviewed the Helios 18 that has a great 250 hz mini led display and a 4080. In turbo mode it's like a 4099 but the fan is super loud. Battery life sucks too. But other than that it is great and best buy had it on sale for $2200. They sold out but I'm sure they will have it back. The Legion 7 is still awesome though. Best buy also has a 4080 Asus Strix 18 for about $2500. Nit tried it personally. I'm sure everyone will have super sales next week. The Legion is probably the best all rounder. I personally have the Cyberpowerpc Tracer Vii with a 4080 and I really like it. Just be aware it took me 3 units before I got one that worked OK
Great stuff.. NewCastlona look dangerous this year.
Go the Lionesses 🦁🦁🦁
Hey Tally! Yes, Newcastle have a good squad now. I saw them play over the summer in the USA and they looked sharp and fit.
Sorry about the world cup result mate. It was a good game.
Hopefully England can win something and in turn put pressure in the men to perform better
legion series is all game right now.. like its got variant for everyone like gamers, designers, etc from entry level to high level!
They do have a good portfolio
There is something wrong with your cine bench scores. Mine on default settings hits between 28000~29000 every single time.
Yes, that is where it should be at. Even at 135w and 3791Mhz it scored poorly. What do you think I the cause?
@@OWNORDISOWN Maybe it's not turboing properly ? Also, what version of Cine bench are you using ? I tested with R16
Also, I've noticed in some apps or games, the cpu easily passes 100 degrees. For example, Destiny 2 - sometimes, and Remnant - 2 most of the times. In Witcher 3, I've noticed temperatures in the 70s, but Remnant 2 has been the worst offender so far. I've lowered the limit at which throttling triggers in the Legion Custom profile
Today, even I'm getting around 26000. I don't know what's up.
I got the 4080 version of 7i. It's a good laptop, with the exception of its display - the anti-glare surface on it is not good for rooms with very bright lighting because it's too reflective, even on max display brightness the display becomes nearly useless if you're sitting next to open window during very sunny day. This wasn't an issue with previous Legion models.
Thanks for sharing your experience 👍.
That is a very good point.
hi can i ask how is the cooling on this thing? i keep hearing the 4080 gets really hot so im wondering should i get this or a lower power one.
@@ninuerteI haven't seen it be an issue on most reviewer's videos.
The difference between 30 series and 40 series is the power efficiency.
Powerwork wil have less fan noise on the 40 series
The 4080 version of this laptop is the way go in my opinion
Definitely agree. IMO if you want 4060/4070 just go for Legion 5 pro. The main benefit of legion7 spec and cooling is to get the higher tier hardware.
Ya and the 3080ti models perform on the level of the 4070 for laptops so getting last year last gen top tier is viable if your going with a 4070 so I would check on deals and sales of last year models if your budget is 4070 for this year's models. I'm looking at the 4080 model as well as I get older and I travel for work it just makes more sense to replace the desktop.
4070 is better, battery life is more superior compared to having 4080
Way to expensive
total waste of money in a chassis like this
5.5 lbs is shocking to me, I think they advertise these at 4 something. The intel version is a hard pass from me, I was interested in the AMD version but seems way too many corners cut for an almost $2000 laptop. I'm out until next year. Hopefully some of the Strix designs are interesting. I do really like the 16" 2560x1600 panel, I think that's just perfect for a laptop, I'd change to 1280x800 for gaming and an igpu should work just fine.
Yeah, I think the omission of the windows hello camera is a mistake when most of the competition have it. I think perhaps $1700 would be a fair price. Lenovo usually has discounts so it's worth keeping an eye on any codes
Finally! Quiet mode for gaming
Yeah, 60 fps 36dB . Sounds good to me too!
@@OWNORDISOWN :D! I was planning on limiting the wattage on the CPU and GPU to make the fans spin quietly, but, with Lenovo customization I can make it even more quieter than silent mode ( I'm willingly sacrifice FPS, as long as it doesn't go below 60 FPS, for a better and quieter fan noise )
Another banger review stephen. And yes, an actual review, with a nice deepdive into the features and sensible criticism and features lenovo should add.
I fully agree, we should have an 18' laptop with a 16:10 display. Preferably with ultra thin bezels for max space saving. I would add that you should push for a glossy display option too. This matte coating distorts colors and such quite a lot. I've seen the XPS 17's screen design and MAN, is it a joy. I would LOVE to play games on an 18' version of that.
And oh man, is the rtx 4070 a JOKE. I have seen the nitro 5 with the 150w 3070ti for $1000 on newegg. Compared to that the rtx 4070 at $2000 is a giant JOKE. Its slower than the best rtx 3070ti laptop, the MSI GE76 which means its barely faster than the other 150w rtx 3070ti laptops like the nitro 5 and helios 300.
Honestly, the rtx 4070 would've made a pretty compelling rtx 4060 had it been priced at $1000 for the 100w to 115w models. The performance increase would've been nice and the extra vram would've sufficed too. Ideally we should've seen 10gb of vram at the very least, if nvidia wants to advertise RT use. Even at 1080p 8gb of vram will feel short. Something somewhat okay for the 3070ti but not an excuse for the ''rtx 4070''.
Thanks Eric! I agree totally. It needs 10GB vRAM. In a few years it's going to be quite limiting that even the band aid of frame generation won't overcome . At $1950 it is far too expensive given the 3070ti prices. People will get sucked into it though thinking they have a deal but its bad value even against the 4080.
@@OWNORDISOWN Oh I've seen people justify the 4060 over the 3070ti with dlss 3 and ''efficiency''.
Forget thw 4080, the 3070ti literally costs $1000 for the 150w nitro 5. 4070 is a joke with no punchline.
Do they not realize efficiency and cpu gains are something that's standard with a new gen of gpu's?
I’d buy it if it didn’t have the ridiculous rgb! 😂 Jk, I am looking for a replacement for my 2022 ASUS A15 that I got at the end of April. It died while writing on it. I sent it in for a MB replacement, but don’t expect to ever seeing it again after watching some horror stories on yt about ASUS’ horrible customer service.
Had an amazing screen: 2560 x 1440p @165 Hz, 100% dpi-p3 (?). Really good. Their “military-grade” chassis is a joke though! Far worse than my 2020 A15 that I took out of retirement.
Yes, I had a viewer who had a nightmare RMA with Asus. I had to get an Asus engineer I know involved to sort it out.
how is the vantage software? i have an asus laptop and armoury crate is functioning like a literal virus and i hope whoever made armoury crate suffers for the rest of their life.
I found it to be stable and very intuitive. Much better than what MSI uses and Alienware, those two must be the worst.
It's all in one location, again unlike MSI that uses the Steelseries app for the keyboard and MSI true color . Many report that Armory crate is buggy.
Nice ❤
Thanks 🔥

I rewatched the video and realized you overpaid for this. I got the RTX 4080 SKU for 1970 before taxes. I don't know why they charged you full price; Did you purchase from a 3rd party retailer?
Nobody should be buying a 4070 7i when the pro 5i exists. They're just way too similar.
7i has different speakers compared to any 5i models. I ordered latest Pro 5i with 4070 and had to return it because sound quality from its speakers was awful and no amount of adjustment in Nahimic software could change that. The 7i also comes with more powerful CPU compared to Pro 5i models, even the version with 4070 CPU.
@@sdfasdfvccvvc how much are those features worth though? A 4080 7i? By all means. I had one and loved it so much I upgraded to a 4090. But at $1400ish vs $1800 or so? Spend the extra $200 and get the 4080 7i.
I would expect the cooling option would be greater due to the overall size. Is this not the case?
@@nSquared75 They're about the same size. The 4070 7i also doesn't use a vapor chamber like the 4080/90 versions do.
After waiting a month, my 7i will arrive on the 5th. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't go for the 4080 model, but I only had $1800 to work with and that model was around $2150 with tax after all the discounts.
I'm sure you will like it nonetheless. I was using it last night and I really like the RGB and it's really quite quiet when just watching a show on it
