i really love this song and analyzing john's parts on this because it would be easy to overplay but his parts really accentuate the bass, cool song, would have been nice to hear AK over this.
Yeeeeeaaaa California i love California. Laaaaaaddyy come over here. I'll show you dirt. I'll show the land of Mississippi and you'll become my dani girl. Yeeeeaaa heyyyyh ohhhh I saw snowwww for the first time.
By now six songs from the Greatest Hits sessions are known: Fortune Faded; Save the Population; Bicycle Song; Runaway; Starlight; and 50/Fifty. "Leverage of Space" and "Kill For Your Country (Mini-Epic)" may also have been recorded around that time.
+Gabriel Lins Procópio de Moura Kill For Your Country was written for an Anti-War album, that Rick Rubin was going to produce with several different bands on it. Rolling Sly Stone is another song, that would have been on that album.
Bicycle song was written during the By the Way sessions, though. Fortune Faded as well, you can find live versions from 2001, but they re-recorded it and changed the chorus.
P basses are usually somehow deeper, warmer and for me having a bit of let's say 'acoustic taste' known from upright basses what you can hear about 2:18. At least it is a J bass played with neck pickup - similar sound.
If you listen to bass a lot, you will be able to easily tell apart a Pbass with it's humless, round sound, from lets say a Jazzbass, Stingray or a Rickenbacker even. Flea sounds best with the more defined Jbass tone or the full sound of a Stingray and almost exclusively plays those.

Flea on a Precission Bass! :D
You must have a good ear. How can you tell if it's a J bass or P bass just by listening? What I mean is, what are the differences in sound?

+twardy90 Thank you! I have a P/J hybrid. It's a P body with J pickups.
