"We don't really know how to play it, but we're gonna give it our best shot" *proceed to perform a flawless Funky Monks after 15 years of not playing it*
I bet they practiced the hell out of this tune before performing it live. John singing and playing during the B section doesn't just happen spontaneously. It takes work.
Michael Kelso Dutch Interviewer Bram van Splunteren said he liked it 'though' in 1990 in the Amsterdam canals something that John played, and John said 'Though' ?
I love how John sits there with a puzzled look on his face for a minute thinking about how the dude could possibly NOT like Funky Monks before he says that. The story that followed about how Anthony came up with the riff is funny too. Anthony: "Hey John check out this rhythm that I made up,it's a cool rhythm, watch" followed by his crappy guitar playing. John:"yeah sounds great"

well they've played Dani California a lot and know it well enough so Anthony can certainly improvise and/or mess around with the lyrics. a song they haven't played since 1991 they'd kind of have to play it just like the album so they DON'T fuck it up, you know?
i love the way guitar, bass and drums make you feel like they were playing completely different rythms one from each other, but they create that incredibly complex groove collectively that i have to say sometimes i believe john when he says that the mansion where they recorded blood sugar was enchanted and all that music was brought to the band by spirits from another dimension....

It’s easy to get 50% of the way there with the basic notes and chords but getting the feel, the snap, the pop, the way he beats the everloving hell out of individual strings with surgical precision... it doesn’t sound right if you don’t do those things correctly. He uses a ton of left-hand muting on certain strings to make his chords sound how they do, which is something else most people don’t get right. Even a song like “Can’t Stop” which sounds like a few easy notes over and over... learning that riff is a real lesson in the left hand doing a lot of imperceptible perfectly-timed movements for muting.
@@400_billion_suns True, my friend. Surgical precision and always a lot of strength hitting the strings, 100% right. Giulio Strammiello They've played the song live a total of three times now, once in 1991 and twice in 2006. I wish I knew why they avoid this song, maybe because it's such an obscure song in their catalog, but you never know, they might whip it out again someday. I really hope they do, too, because this is my favorite RHCP song. :)
I kinda wish they did more requests like this, I'd be trying to request more of their early albums. True Men Don't Kill Coyotes is something I'd LOVE to hear them play now after decades of playing, I feel like it'd be even better live especially in the current state of the band. Sadly, I don't think they'll ever do any of their old music because a few others in other comment sections kept saying that Anthony has a grudge against their old record label (EMI Records I believe?) And that because of something that happened with the label, he refuses to play the old music up to Mother's Milk (save for their popular songs from the albums, I.E., Higher Ground) and instead only teases parts of their old music in their shows now. I'm gonna look more into it, but that's what I've seen in other comment sections surrounding their old album music and their old concerts, so if it is true then that's a huge bummer. I'm sure Anthony has his reasons, but I'm still holding onto hope they they'd do more of their old music eventually.
