Metal had a musical theatre background and he “acted” every song out. He also enunciated every word carefully because, as you say, it was a story he was telling.

One interpretation of this song that I really agree with is that the girl he is talking to is the same girl that broke his heart in the past. "There is not a past love and a current girl in this. It's the same girl. She has changed her mind about him, but her inability to love him in the past has ruined it for him, so now even though she has changed her mind, the girl he once loved is gone as far as he is concerned."

"Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" was one of the slow songs they would play at the after school dances when I was in middle school. The entire Bat Out of Hell album is great. Todd Rundgren produced it. The song "Bat Out of Hell" is another epic, so check it out too. But you might find more depth to dig in Todd Rundgren's catalog. Check out "I Saw the Light" and "Bang the Drum All Day" for starters. And another power ballad from back then that holds up well is "Lights" by Journey. That song features the guitar solo that defined power ballad guitar solos for a decade.

Meatloaf's character for the song was damaged by that first woman, she took some important part of his ability to love when she walked out of his life, telling him that she wanted him and needed him, but there was no way she'd ever love him. When she walked out, she left him the same condition, where he could want somebody and need them, but recognize that he never return their love.

Until MTV there was nowhere to play videos, therefore no videos were made. ! And totally, off the wall, but check out Jack Black & Jimmy Fallon singing 'More than words'. They made me laugh, even as they sang the song beautifully. It's great. You should check them out too. For another Meatloaf, check out 'I would do anything for love (but I won't do that0'.

I read somewhere that this song exists because the record company wanted "a regular song" on the album: one that wasn't 10 minutes long, that they could play on the radio. 😂

Meatloaf never thought of himself as a singer, he was a performet/ actor in fact. Thats how he started. His biography is very telling. Sweet guy.

Great song and for as sad as the song is, it’s got a bit of humor too. If you like this kind of storytelling in song, check out Objects In The Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are (listen to the full album version). Keep up these great reactions! 🎉

Oh and you should absolutely 100% watch the video of him singing The National Anthem. It’s incredibly perfect and so powerful.

❤ Jim Steinman a brilliant songwriter and Meatloaf a brilliant opera trained singer with a flare for the dramatic, made a legendary pair! (Like Elton John and Bernie Taupin) And yes, this is from the same concert, The Bat Out of Hell tour/album. It was a concept album and the songs tell a story. So, the theme was 'prom night' , that's why he's wearing a tux shirt. 😅 ❤❤

Gotta love the Meat Loaf reactions! As a hardcore Meat fan, I'd say do "Bat out of Hell" next, but if you want something more recent, then do "I'd Do Anything for Love". I say more "recent" when that song is now 30 years old. He also won his lone Grammy for "I'd Do Anything for Love". Can't go wrong either way!
