I agree. I used to think that too. But, now I think he was turning it all back on the girl that left him and wanted to come back. But she burned that bridge and he's telling her the same thing she told him. I want and need you but I'm not going to love you. No more. No way. (I paraphrased that). "You've been cold to me so long I'm crying icicles instead of tears." It made him turn cold toward her crying for him to take her back and love her.

No. The girl he's talking to is the same girl that broke his heart many years earlier. He speaks of her in the third person because he no longer knows or loves her. He states that she's been so cold to him for so long at the start of the song.

OH WOW... I've been explaining this song to people for years as though he was so torched by that ex that he uses her old brush-off line in his more current relationships. It never occurred to me that it could be him getting back at the SAME girl after getting back together. Perhaps when he says that the only girl he ever loved so long ago WAS her, but he's talking like she was mentally/emotionally a different person as compared to her now. A nice angle, RNE !

The song is about honesty though. In the beginning of the song he was honest enough to tell someone he could never love them instead of leading them on. Then he flashed back to when the same thing was said to him. Ending things is never painless. Another old song with a similar sentiment is Mac Davis' "Don't Get Hooked on Me".

    • @darkforceb9026

Actually that is not accurate. In the beginning of the song , he was singing it from her point of view, , what she said to him the stormy night how she walked out on him and how she left him. Many people assume that he was telling that to someone else, but no he was singing it from her point of view. Then later in the song he confirms it when he retells the story about how she left him that day.

So good to see people appreciating Meatloaf. Coming off age in the 90s, I was the only one among my friends (I'm a black Briton) who loved him so I never got to see him live. Such an amazing story teller, with a huge voice, full of heart! So sad that he's no longer with us. May his Soul rest in God's perfect peace, amen.

👌😂👍awesome you guy’s finally listened to our request! This is definitely one of his best songs! And put him on the map! I was about 13 years old when this one hit the radio waves! Man he definitely will be missed!😢🙏Rip meatloaf! Loved your reaction!♥️

Excellent reaction!!! I had the pleasure of seeing him a few years ago. I can honestly say it was one of the best concerts I have gone to. He has a beautiful voice and he actually trembles when he sings. I was so sad when he passed. Why is it that so many artists are taken from us way to early in life... So sad💔💔😥😥 RIP Meatloaf

Seeing your reactions touched me. So, heartfelt thanks and gratitude. The song writer behind Bat Out Of Hell is Jim Steinman. He collaborated with Meatloaf, Todd Rundgren, and Ellen Foley to create that album (and-damn-if-it-ain't-good).
Some other cool stuff he did includes -Total Eclipse Of The Heart (Bonnie Tyler) -Makin' Love Out Of Nothing At All (Air Supply) ...and almost the whole sound track to Streets Of Fire.
I don't know is this will resonate (maybe too slow for RUclips) but 'Heaven Can Wait' from Bat Out Of Hell is intense and Meatloaf nailed it, that one slips under the radar.
Putting some of Jim's songs (side-by-side-by-side) might be cool if you're into it.
Thanks, Love, and Blessings from an old rocker who is seeing the music I grew up with come to life again.
    ~L

My mom was a huge Meatloaf fan so I heard this song often as a kid. I forgot about it and heard it again after about 25yrs. I listened to the words and truly heard this song, the lyrics...I grew up a bit, lol

Cuts like a knife, everyone’s been there, that situation in a relationship where one is more into the other, that feeling is raw deep, great song by one of the all time great song writers and singers Jim Stienman and Meat Loaf, from one of the greatest albums of all time, plus one of the best selling albums of all time and to think no one wanted them on their label, shows how stupid ignorant the industry is even today, we won’t ever get music or artists like this again. 522 weeks in the charts multi multi plus plus Platinum, grew up on this Album and Meat, so hard to think where time has gone and where music and the times we had back then have gone, been to his concerts one of the best live. 🤘Even when this came out few knew how to take it, except the fans of true music and genius. As good as it is people learnt to get last the commercial bs into it, ai never understood why people couldn’t see how truly good this was at the time. I was primary school kid riding on a bus and I got this music. They were really great live, it was an experience, more so than the events around the music eg crowd and what’s happening there, that’s how good he and the whole production were.

my husband and my oldest daughter and I met this wonderful man at a convention where he was doing a reunion with his Rocky horror picture show cast and he was so incredibly nice and probably the most humble celebrity I have ever met....he was signing a record of the soundtrack and remembered my name and my daughter's name but forgot my husband's name and said and I quote "Well 2 out if 3 isn't bad" I swear I could have died happy right then.. such a treasure that the world is less bright without! RIP Meatloaf 🙏

Meatloaf was an amazing singer and one of the best performers of all time, but the pianist Jim Steinman was his equal as he's considered to be one of the best songwriter/composers of all time. His lyrics are amazing.

You definitely missed out on...Meatloaf, Journey ( & a few Steve Perry solo hits), Hall & Oates, Prince, Foreigner, Billy Joel, Michael McDonald, so many. And, if you want to be totally shocked...listen to the crazy loud KISS sing a beautiful love song "Beth". :) A beautiful song about the drummer missing his wife while they are constantly on the road.
