  • I compare & contrast these two pens. Both great pens in their own way. Look fabulous, write great. This video gets technical. No writing in this video but use these links to see writing.

Great review, cool pens. Also the camaraderie in the fountain pen community is admirable, kudos to you for mentioning Mr.D.R. You are two of the main Pilars.

Thanks for the good news about Doug coming back. For more than a year now, I really only watch your reviews and Doug’s. I think what I like most is that each of you is much more capable of analyzing the engineering of a pen than I could ever be. While I pursued law and business finance, my highest aptitude was in math. Nevertheless, when it came to physics and application to real world, I was never gifted in any way. I depend on people like you to show me every detail of disassembling, cleaning, repairing, etc. By the way, I really enjoyed this comparison. KW

"Wait patiently for them to arrive." Chris you are much more patient than I! (smile) Just ordered
another Kaigelu 316 (Suimo). Love the looks of the acrylic. Can hardly wait for it to arrive.
My 5th Kaigelu 316 has shipped, and #6 just ordered. Now comes "wait patiently for them to arrive."

I was heavily into meditation (medication) in my youth, Learn to enjoy the little things as much as the big things. All things come to those that wait, I've heard.

Thanks for the great look at these, Chris. Despite my cap complaint on the Facebook group, I enjoy my Jinhao 100 red one. It looks nice and feels great. I may have to order that blue one as well. I'm happy how Jinhao always seems to be improving their quality. The PenBBS looks nice too!

I don't think there is such a thing as a unique resin under a hundred dollars. Maybe higher. Certainly not out of China. Most of it is resin in 'y the skill of the name only, and the difference between one and another is only color, and the skill of the person who takes it from the design program and turns it into an actual pen. I have a friend in China who specializes in making cheap plastic look like expensive resin. He sure can make it pretty, and for many that's what matters, so no harm done.
I know many of the materials and components pen makers in India use to build some of their "handmade" pens comes out of China, but I'm a lot more impressed with what I'm starting to see from India than I ever was with Chinese pens.
The only Chinese pens I have are ones sent to me by friends in China. I really, really liked the Jinhao 100 pens at first. Enough to try using several of them on a daily basis. But now they're simply falling apart. Finials simply disintegrating, nib tines bending from right to left, and even the tipping material wearing down. I've had the same experience with other brands from China, and from just about every nib made in China.
The Jinhao and Hongdian pens made from metal are an exception. Replacing the nibs is mandatory, if you do a lot of daily writing, but that's easy, and the pens themselves are usually well made, even if QC can be an issue.

Jonathan Sterling (Carolina Pens) is making exceptional resins, supplies many US pen makers as well as his own. Jim Hinze is also doing well. I find the lower cost China resin pens to be a great value. I have a few Indian pens & agree they are very good but at a higher costs than Chinese pens. I generally do not need to replace the No. 6 nibs on my Jinhaos, Mojiangs & Kaigelus. They write very well from EF - M. If you want a B or CI, that need to swap out the nib.

Cool - not a big fan of the fire cloud resin. I got the emerald blue ;) wondering why these 2 did not make it with a color # nor on the PenBBS store 🤔
I too have to look at the clear 355 to figure it out… 500 much preferred 😉 I hope PenBBS reissues the 500 like they just did the 355…

No number as it is not sold by PenBBS. Pen was made for a retailer. Showed up on eBay as I guess they have left over inventory.

The reasons that I am not a fan of some of the more complicated filling systems of PENBBS related mostly to the fact noted in the earlier post: I do not want mechanical challenges! :)

Understood. As an engineer, I consider these a challenge. As a fountain pen user, I enjoy a C/C pen more.

Great.to.see.n know there's a museum ....for pens. Actually I have only a handful of Parkers Shaeffers Waterman etc etc..less then a hundred ....but I'm still thinking who is going to appreciate to carry on with it....I wanted to gift my Maroon marble Duofold to Douglas 🤠 but didn't want to let go now. Is there any idea. 🙄💚

Gifting pens is a great way to address too many pens. One's stored pen is another's treasure.

I see that all the PenBBS 355s in your collection have silver/chrome trim.. Curious to know if gold trim variants are also available, but you chose the Silver/chrome ones..

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  3 года назад +2

My understanding, PenBBS does not offer different trim. Some models have gold trim with a gold plated nib.

I have these! i do love them both. My firecloud colorway is very well evenly swirled. i got a good one and my nib is fantaaaastic. it's one of my favorite PenBBS finishes, so far. the Emerald 355 is also excellent.
    That Kaigelu is gorgeous!!!
when i hunted around, i could only find Tuzi in a 456, so that's what i got. i keep my eyes peeled though.
i'm putting an emerald 355 in your package so dont order one! lol
