Wow Chris, you should be compensated as a PENBBS engineer for that added instructional on 'twisting the piston,' shown in in the instructions!
The magnetic piston filler is such a fun idea. I couldn't resist and just bought one in the Autumn color and fine nib. Thanks for a fun and interesting video.
Glad it was helpful! You'll enjoy the pen. Thanks for watching.
Barbara, did you have any trouble filling in the pen? I want one but I'm worried!!
Hey Chris! It was useful to see all your Autumns lined up. It made me realize that I like not having a cap band on my 487, though I like having a cap band on the 492. Thank you for the shout out! Oh, and I did hear that "meow" haahaha
Rock on! I try to inject some humor. I enjoy your videos. We all add a bit to the collective knowledge.
Excellent review as always. I'm not always the world's greatest fan of heavily decorated acrylic pens but this is certainly an attractive example. I'm completely with you about magnets. There's nothing to dislike when magnets are in the equation. I do find it a bit irritating when PenBBS and some other manufacturers don't include any branding or model number on a pen. I know it can deface the pen, particularly if you go to Preppy lengths, but it makes life tricky for a collector to remember what's what. It's not a deal breaker for me. The cat references and your free included miaow in this video may be enough to make me buy :) take care and stay well. Best wishes from the UK.
Thanks. Collecting is an art form. Primary is the collector's perspective, needs & desires. One of my main goals is to always enjoy what I do. I try to share the joy. Thanks for watching. Enjoy your collecting. Stay safe & healthy.
Thanks for the review. This is a unique pen, but not for everyone. Seems to me eyedropper conversion is the best for everyday use.
Great vid. Intro music.. all of it. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Your pen knowledge and insights always impress. Another informative video, and appreciated the beautiful eye candy. The resin really glows onscreen.
Oh thank you! I try to get the colors to pop. Glad it looked that way.
Great review, thank you ! Good tip the nib break-in period. My 487 RM was wet and smooth :-), but the later 2 fines were tight tined dry, though smooth with the mini-fude. Always enjoy your positive affirmation messages at the closing. Be well.
Thank you for watching. These nibs are Mass produced & will have some variances. Thankfully with a little tuning, all write very well.
After seeing your review of this pen, I went on Etsy and bought it in the exact same color (#28 Autumn). I had watched your review a while ago about the PenBBS 492 magnetic piston filler and the idea intrigued me. When I saw your review of the 487, I decided to get it. It just seems like such a novel way to fill a pen. It's the scientist in me. I like cool things that put science to novel use. I would consider a magnetic piston filler novel. Anyway, thanks for a great video. My 487 arrived today and I have been having a blast with it.
Great video as usual. I also got a second 487 in that fluorescent green material. Thanks for the shout-out!
Glad you enjoyed. The glowing resin is very nice in this design.
Very informative review, most enjoyable. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! It took a lot of effort to make. Needed a lot of "tuning". Many days of editing. Nice to hear it showed. Be safe & healthy.
Hi Chris, thank you for another excellent review. I am in love with the Autumn resin. It is just beautiful. I need to add that style to my collection and will. By the way, I love your intro song...I'm dating myself, but it was a favorite in high school and when I hear it it makes me smile...love that song! Stay well and healthy.
Thanks. I felt the song was appropriate. I was in the working world when the song was released. Be safe & happy.
One follow up question/request, could you do an eppie comparing the differences and similarities between Moonman and PenBBS nibs? Which do you prefer more? Which performs the best? Thank you kindly for considering it.
Two different nibs. Many sizes of each. Not an easy comparison. I'll consider. Bottom line, IMHO both nice, nib wouldn't impact my decision when buying either pen.
That’s a neat type of filling mechanic
There is an easy fix to the piston not moving especially on new 487s. Open up the nib part and put in some water and let it soak a bit. Worked on all 3 new pens I got. No need to use the wooden stick to the end.
I had a stick, worked in seconds. No cleanup after. Others might try that.
chrisrap52 yeah anything handy. I rinse all my pens before using with water and bit of soap anyway so it was handy
I always flush nib & feed. Haven't considered flushing barrel.
Nice editorial about finding a connection with the reviewer. I find that I really like the minimal look of this pen and the section is comfortable in my hand. The filling system is kind of gimmicky, but also conversation starter. One for a collection but maybe not an EDC
Totally agree! Thanks for watching.
And there is now a whole new slew of resin materials available in the 487 right now. 40+ choices when accounting for various nib choices on the Etsy PenBBS store. Some seem pretty new, and plenty of translucent and transparent choices.
I didn't see any "new" colors. Some that are not used much. They are cranking them out.
@@chrisrap52 Maybe it was me, but I haven't seen Strawberry Soda before. At least colors you don't usually see in the Etsy store, or that I haven't seen in the last year or so.
They used many rare colors. Nice to see them.
@@chrisrap52 Definitely, although I had ordered a couple before the latest batch of rarities landed. So do I make another order, or do I restrain? :)
How many PenBBS pens do you want? We should no impose limits on our enjoyment. Go for them...
Love the Neon. Regarding the Autumn, it seems foolish not to have a more transparent barrel with the testy fiilling system. Thanks for the review.
Was not expecting to like the neon at all but wow. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! The colors really pops.
@@chrisrap52 think I have a similarly coloured WingSung 3007.
On the 3007, color doesn't pop like on PenBBS.
hello, me again, yes i really like the 487, even if the magnets put a mess with everything metallic on the desk.
i propose a more indepth transformation of the filling system.
take the piston out, unscrew the magnet part (the screw and the magnet). it can be difficult, in some pen there is a kind of silicon glue, so patience and caution are the words. And put back in the pen only the plastic part of the piston. store the screw and the magnet somewhere in case you want to undone the transformation.
take the screw to your local hardware store, and get yourself a very long screw or a threaded rod (around 10 cm long and around 4 mm in diameter).
Now if you want to refill/drain/clean or adjust the level of air in the pen (to avoid burp), put the long screw inside the back of the pen, screw it lightly in the piston, with precaution because it's plastic against metal, and now you can pull or push the piston. when done, unscrew the rod, and store it somewhere where you can find it for the next fill.
i have done three of my 487 and it works really well.
WOW. Great idea. I have to keep my 487s away from any metal. I too like the pen.
Nice pen! The stuck piston is the result of "static friction" which some pen makers have talked about. It is common to many piston fillers. Once you get the piston moving it should work smoothly.
Ummm, static friction. A fancy word for stuck. Shouldn't change over time as this piston sticks when not moved in a while. Maybe I'll use the term. Thanks.
Great pen video.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
I had mine in niangao and it looks beautiful. I must have had a good ‘un as the magnet moved well. Beini must be cost cutting as the last few pens from her had no packaging, just bubble. No instructions either. Sadly she can’t sell ink to UK. First class video as ever.
Thanks. Was the Niango in a metal box? No room for instructions. No cat sticker, sad.
chrisrap52 no, nothing but bubble. In contrast my 492 came in a shipping container! Nice ink bottle though. Pen was missing so a two month wait but worth it.
Chris, based on your review I had to get the 487, especially since magnets 🧲 are involved. As much as I like the other finishes I thought I needed the clear finish in order to observe the action. The magnet was finicky at first but I did get it to move. Now that it’s filled, I wonder if the ink will cause a stronger vacuum and impede the magnet when it’s time to clean and fill? With the amount of ink it holds, I guess I won’t have to deal with that in a while. I suppose one of your lobster bands will come in handy if I have to remove the bottom screw to insert a chopstick. And that’s why I’m going up the down escalator of life.
I love the engraved logo - gives it a really premium, kind of vintage feel. Similar to the Conklin All American or something.
Depending on the resin it can be almost too subtle.
@@martinlebl631 True. The engraving on Conklin All American is definitely deeper, so it's much more obvious. I'd like to see it deeper on the PenBBS pens.
Maybe fill in the branding with some paint.
Chris, I know the pen comes in a box, but a question I would ask is whether any conditions in shipment could contribute to the stuck piston. At the very slight weights involved, I assume these come via air to the USA port of entry. In your case it also goes all the way to the East Coast. Will altitude, for cargo planes or unpressurized cargo space (along with, from my own personal experience in the USAF, extreme temperature changes at high altitude over the northernmost hemisphere). Is it possible metal expands at a different level than the plastic? At any rate, I tend to think that making things more complex than necessary is always to created a more failure prone pen! But, my last physics class was over 55 years ago! :)
I agree. In transit the pens undergo many changes in temp & pressure. My experience with PenBBS pistons is the rubber used for the o-ring adheres to the plastic resin of the barrel. Once piston is freed it moves easily. When left to set for a day or two, it will stick again. I've washed out barrel, silicone greased everything & piston will still stick over time. Some o-rings stick less than others, probably slight variations on chemistry or dimensions.
yes 1st comment, those are beautiful colors from penbbs 👍
Yay! Thank you! Thanks for watching & enjoying.
Thanks, Chris! Lots of good information as usual and an open mind, appreciated. What's next for filling mechanisms? Is there something beyond magnetism to get ink into a pen? Why do you think the 492 nib is better? More attention in production?
Might be a slightly different nib than typical F. Maybe it was tuned. Either way, I like it.
The autumn finish was what made PenBBS interesting to me in the beginning. Now I have three different autumn pens, the 456, the 355 and the 500. But I doubt I'll buy any of those gimmick 487s. I have no problems investing time when repairing a pen or fine tuning it to make it work flawlessly but after that I don't want to have to fiddle around with it everytime I just want to use it. I have a 309 with a piston that gets stuck regardless of what I do and that's enough problems. So I'll probably wait for their next model. I also need one of those amber models...
With my 309 I always leave the piston down a bit. When I need to move it, the first action is to pull it up, frees it 98% of the time. All my 309s stick after a few days no matter what I did. Amber is nice.
I've super glued the piston rod to the seal and have no problems.
I did that on my 2nd 492. Still got stuck. Have you seen that video?
@@chrisrap52 Do you mean on your 309, because as you know the 492 doesn't have a piston rod. In fact today just to check I pulled out my 309 earlier today, which I hadn't written with in months and the piston operated freely. And it started right up to boot. In fairness it was already down the barrel a bit, not at the extreme end where it is more likely to be stuck. But every since I glued my 309's, no problems getting stuck. I have a 492 with the Rat bottle, but I haven't inked it yet. I'm not tempted really by the new 487 despite having probably 35 or so PenBBS in various models.
And YES, I watch ALL of your PenBBS videos because they're great! In overall refinement, nib, and consistency over the entire range, its hard to beat PenBBS. I like vintage inspired pens so I also favor my WS 626 and Moonman M100. I also like the Moonman M8 I recently got (why didn't they make it Post...argh!). Same question for my 355's which are my favorite PenBBS models writing unposted of course. Then 456. But when I return to the older models, ie, 308 and 309, they are just great pens too, so when its time to grab one, I never know what to pick!!
I like the dimensions of the pen but the magnetic filling system seems just too gimmicky for me. I would like to use it as an eye dropper but wouldn't that metal screw cap on the finial prevent that?
You leave the magnetic plunger in and that will provide a safe barrier between the ink and metal.
Yes, leave piston in barrel.
Chris, your thorough reviews are much appreciated! I just bought my first PenBBS pen, the 487 in that clear neon color - a tinkerer's dream! It reminds me of my love of legos and magnets back when I was a kid. It's nice to see that the back end unscrews in the event that the piston is stuck, I bet you could also blow some air in and it would move it with enough pressure since there's no seal there. The only thing that remains to be seen is if the ink level gets low and you decide to move the magnet piston down to reduce the air, will capping/uncapping move the piston? Looks to me like it won't considering the cap has to be more or less in contact with the barrel to fill. Perhaps I will report back here. Thanks again!
I haven't moved piston down as ink level goes down. No easy to move it a little. Looking forward to your experiences.
@@chrisrap52 Just got my 487 today. Wow. The workmanship and quality is really at the level of much more expensive pens! The grip is also extremely comfortable, I could write with the 487 for hours. I also tried the back end, it unscrews easily. Might pick up another one because this is such a great design!
@@bzmudaifyd I just got my 3rd, Winter Night. Piston works much better. It is a great design. I enjoy mine.
@@chrisrap52 oh also looks like you can move it down as ink goes down. Just hold nib up obviously. Remains to be seen if that will stay easy over time or if it needs sufficient greasing
I always appreciate and enjoy your videos Chris. I’ve not been attracted to the magnetic filling system, it just seems a strange idea but I understand that we all have our likes and opinions. That’s one of the beautiful things we have as a community. My best wishes.
There is at least one pen for each of us but not for everyone. Be safe & healthy & enjoy life.
Escalator of life!! 🎶 🎼 🎵 😇🙌🏻
there is an easier way to use the 487. the magnet filling is deficient, (not enought power) so just ignore it. take the filling magneted part out of the barrel, unscrew the screw and the magnet and just put back the plastic part that assure waterproffing and reassemble the pen. that done, unscrew the small metal part at the end of the barrel, and use the pen as a straw in a ink bottle when you want to fill it or empty it.
if you're suspicious you can use water for the first tests to be sure avoiding a colored tongue ^_^
Treat pen as an ED. Will work but not as much fun as using the magnet.
@@chrisrap52 hello, me again
i have figured another way to resolve the problematic magnet move.
you just need ... another cap. that is: as said by penbbs use the cap of the pen to put it on the side of the body of the pen, then take another 487 and take is cap, and put it on the other side of the body magnet of the first pen. then, you have a body with two caps connected to his magnet, and more force to move the magnet, i have tried it, it works, but i haven't tried it with a pen that haven't been used for a while, and i think it is the real test.
the only problem i have found is that you need to have two 487.
@@prenomnom9163 I just tried it & it WORKS. Thanks for sharing.
My 355-80SF has the same section profile of the 308 and 267. It's the same in yours?
Yes, same shaped section.
Dear Chris, I bought one 487 EF nib. But the ink flow, in quick writer, isn't so goog? Could you give me some advice? I'm afraid that I can't remove the nib from collar. Anyone else could help me, please? Thanks! BTW, no cat sticker!
Need to open tines. Doug Rathburn has a video on making PenBBS nibs wetter.
@@chrisrap52 Thanks!
I love that the “stamping” is SUBTLE... gives it an upscale/high-end air... would NOT want it any more visible than it is. I love understated branding... not so in your face. I own the the 500 and 487, both in galaxy. The 487’s “stamping” coupled with the finial medallion takes PenBBS in that realm of what other luxury fountain pen makers do so WRONG. These others could most certainly take notes out of a page from PenBBS. HINT, HINT Those charging near thousands of USD for much lesser quality and details...
I like it, but could be little deeper, as on some of the resins it is almost impossible to read. But I like the addition.
I find many aspects of PenBBS to be way above their price point. They have a great understated but very functional & integrated design. Thanks for watching.
@@chrisrap52 That is why we keep coming back for more. Nowhere else can you get that sort of quality for such a price. Usually it is a fairly large multiple, or order of magnitude even.
A total of 1 check for a 9.3? Based on the evidence, I just can't see buying this pen.
It is a personal decision.
