Most of the time, veins are easy to hit on marines (they're huge. could hit Clayton's R brachial with a dart). Even in heavy trauma, you should be able to find one. You put in an IV through feel, not by sight. Best veins sometimes you can't see and God help the idiot who says they can't find a vein because all they're doing is sitting there *looking* at it. It's a good theory, but any RN worth their training can find a line tattoo or no tattoo.
I'm a poolee and I have a sizable tattoo on my shoulder, and am going active duty after boot. The process was barely a speed bump in my paperwork. My recruiter just asked if it was gang related or not, and since it wasn't, just had to make sure that it was covered by a PT uniform and had to take a picture of it to document it along with a description as to why I got it. Honestly, the whole process was really simple and quick. You don't need to worry about tattoos and going into your recruiter's office. They want you to enlist just as bad as you want to
Clayton Filpo helps me out a lot . No telling where I would be without his videos . Enlisting soon hopefully to the 03xx infantry field . Good luck to all future devils🇺🇸
I wish it would change back too. Like they're seriously turning people away from wanting to serve their country because of their tattoo placement?! its such bullshit. personally I think they'll go back by next year being that they officially lifted the ban on transgender people being allowed to enlist and serve openly. and can start enlisting next July. so im thinking and hoping by next year they'll change their tattoo policy.
In the UK, the rules are (for the Army) that you can't have offensive tattoos, but also you must not have it in a place where it can be seen on your passport. i think that it's the face and neck in general.
I'd imagine the no knees and no elbows are so you don't have any accidental damage to those areas from getting tattooed there. not sure how a tattoo could hurt your joints but sounds like the reason to me
The only thing I can think of to give reason for the no tattoos in the eblow area would be to keep it relatively easy to spot a vein on the inside of your elbow for if you ever needed a blood transfusion in some sort of combat/medical emergency. I don't know what all goes on with a blood transfusion, but I know that whenever I've had my blood taken or given blood for the Red Cross that it was from one of my veins near my inner elbow, and if someone were to have a "full sleeve" tattoo there, inadvertently covering the veins, it would make things much more difficult for the doctor, corpsman, or whoever need to spot that vein to give you the blood or plasma that you needed. I've got no clue about the knees though.
Only reason I can think of for not allowing elbow tattoos is that it can be hard to find a vein if the skin is blacked with ink. Thats assuming you need to get stuck for some reason.
maybe the elbow/knee thing is because tattoos aren't exactly painless and you won't want to be crawling around on a fresh tattoo? at least I wouldn't. it's one of those things that they don't want anything to hinder your ability to perform.
CONFUSED Policy says upper arm tattoos are aloud but must be 2 inches above the elbow. But if it hangs below 2 inches right at the top of the elbow and you can still cover it with your hand its aloud So basically what I'm tryna ask is, your aloud to join the marines with a half sleeve that goes from top of the elbow to shoulder that extends below 2 inches but as long as you can cover it, its aloud.
Do you think they will change the tattoo policy before June ? I have a sleeve, but i want to be a marine. if not I was just going to go for Rangers in the Army. Or maybe even navy corpsman program. they seem to be a lot more relaxed on tattoos.
Bowdi Miller good question. I'd like to know too. Lol just to know. I'm trying to enlist In the Air Force anyway so this is technically irrelevant to me.
I'm a little confused as to the size thing, do the size restrictions apply only to bands? Would a half sleeve irezumi be okay if it ended before the elbow?
Wait I'm confused, what happens if you're already a marine and just so happen to have tattoos that are in the red zones? Do you get kicked out or get in trouble?
+Isaac Reaper restrictions as maybe being pushed for early retirement not being able to put in a package to become a warrant officer or officer or just promotion period
+Isaac Reaper yup Im a Marine but ive read stories of seasoned grunts getting kicked out because they get a tattoo that is too close to out of regulations
+joey cartagena Wow, that's fucked up. On Facebook I saw marines going at it because of the new policy. I personally agree with Clayton, its ridiculous!
I'm now in the process of getting my tattoo removed it's costing me a fortune it fucking sucks. I've had two sessions already that's costing me 200 dollars every time I go in for my sessions
With the band tattoo, say you get one band then another band below it does that count as one tattoo or are those two separate tattoos? So would both bands have to be covered by your four fingers

ClaytonFilpo man I have a question if you wouldn't mind helping me out. I have 2 small wrist tattoos on each hand but they're on the inside and don't fully wrap around. I also have a tattoo that says "pothead"..... on my right arm but it's not in the red zone and I can cover it up with my fingers. do you think they would let me join the Marines? or am I fucked for any military job??
I want to be a Mariner like after 2 years .....so can I get a tattoo at one of these specified places on my body...????????....plzzz reply to my comment
I really want to join the Marines this year after I graduate but when I turned 18 me and my girls got wrist tattoos..do i need to get it removed or something before I call a recruiter?
The reasons for why those areas are off limits to have a tattoo their are for medical reasons, the elbow area so they can get a IV into your vain, the knee so they can do an IO, and the vertebrae, bc if you have a neck injury and they need to operate the neck vertebrae must be visible, the face and is for obvious reasons and the collar so they could insert a tube just invade your facial air way was compromised. Medical things are the reasons why.
this is fucked my life long ambition was to join the marines I took the last year to get fit and in shape. but they won't take me because I have a koi tattooed on my lower forearm and the tail is on top of my hand.
knees and elbow is simple. that area bends alot and gets blown out alot if not healed correctly then it still can. the marines are supposed to be the best of the best and look the best
ClaytonFilpo can you please please make sure to answer my question - I had an idea to apply for College before graduating high school as my back up plan if the military doesn't work out for me, is that a good idea? Should I apply for College, then head to bootcamp but if it doesn't workout I go to College?
Selmir Esmer always go to college or attend any classes that would benefit your career; whether you are in or out of the military:). It will benefit you greatly 👍💯.
The first one. In the Marines, we call it boot camp. In the other branches they call it basic training. For the Marines, you go to Boot camp, then Marine combat training. If you're infantry, then you go to infantry training after boot camp instead of Marine Combat Training. A little confusing, I know
Clayton i have a tat my only one exactly one inch maybe a tiny bit more under my elbow and my 4 fingers can cover it.. i hope im measuring it right.. i marked the ball of my elbow then drew a perfect straight line around the arm and measured.. it came to being exactly one inch below. should i be ok? thanks man.
Is this still standing? I’m doing research on it right now and I keep finding a lot of contradictory information. When I was 13, I got a tattoo on my ankle and it’s still very prominent. I got it as a way to reclaim a slur that I was being called but I do not think I’ll be able to join the USMC with ‘FAG’ tattooed on my ankle, and I want to know if I should go with the route of covering it or removing it.
the army OKs the sleeve (which I have) and when I saw the thumbnail to this video I got a little happy about it but my sleeve won't be OKd? it stops above the wrist about 3 inches
What if i only have an elbow tattoo and i want to enlist for the first time. What are my options I truly want to join the marines and i don't want my stupid decisions i made at 17 to ruin that. Will i have to remove it because i am willing to do that i just wanted to know my options...
I'm confused on bands and shit lol. I want to get the whole upper half of my arm sleeved and colored to look like its snake skin. Like I'm talking legitimate not a shit bag your best friends creepy uncle gave it to you freshman year. If I follow the 2 inches above the elbows rule but the my whole upper arm is snake skinned all the way around will I be okay? I'm in dep going to boot. I wouldn't be getting the tattoo until after itb or my security forces school. I'm just curious because it's something I've wanted for a while now
For the most part, this new policy is definitely better than the old one, but it hinders people like me for joining the core with this Chef's tattoo that's a 1.5 above my elbow.
+Joshua Matlak you can get waivers for everything except felonies (unless it's been expunged), it's just a matter of how hard it is to get that waiver.
+Scott T. so if I got it waived, won't I stand out in basic training do you think I will get shit because of it. my buddy from Highschool is a marine veteran but he got his elbow tattoo after 3 years in
Joshua Matlak Yeah, you might get a little shit because of it, but the DI's are like sharks, they're looking for blood, not ink. They'll find someone else who is weak and make it their personal responsibility to get them to quit. That said, it's probably going to be hard to get a waiver for a tattoo on your elbow. I hope you get in, though.
Dominic Sumner yes as long as you can't see it in green on green your straight you could get your entire torso tatted if you wanted to- active duty lcpl 0341
I got a question I'm only 17 and really thinking of enlisting maybe Marines and I got a tattoo on the upper part of my elbow do you think theyll be very strict on it
Is there a size limit on how big the tattoo can be as long as its above the wrist and below the elbow? Also is there a limit to the number of tattoos that i can have visible?
I put the full and detailed reg in the video description, but this is a quote from it: "As under the previous tattoo policy, officers are limited to four tattoos visible when they are wearing their PT uniform. There are no restrictions on the number of tattoos enlisted Marines and officers can have in areas covered by the PT uniform."
I think maybe the elbow tat policy is so they can see your veins without a giant tattoo blocking it. could save lives?
That's actually not a bad theory
Most of the time, veins are easy to hit on marines (they're huge. could hit Clayton's R brachial with a dart). Even in heavy trauma, you should be able to find one. Army:
HAVE ALL THE TATTOOS YOU WANT. AS LONG AS ITS NOT ON YOUR FACE AND ITS NOT OFFENSIVE, WELCOME TO THE ARMY!
Morbjørn what about charges?
Morbjørn as long as it's not on your face, neck, or hands and its not offensive
🖕
Can’t get one on wrist too
I'm a poolee and I have a sizable tattoo on my shoulder, and am going active duty after boot. The process was barely a speed bump in my paperwork. Tattoo policy changed I was able to enlist. Shipping out January 3rd.
Aye my birthday👍🏼
ITS TOMORROW! HAVE FUN!
How’d it go
I could see keeping the joint line of the arm clear to facilitate finding veins for IV insertion. Not sure about the knee area though...
Clayton Filpo helps me out a lot . No telling where I would be without his videos . Enlisting soon hopefully to the 03xx infantry field . Good luck to all future devils🇺🇸
I've been waiting since 2007 when sleeves were very first prohibited, for the policy to change back..... Well I'm f*king tired of waiting.....
Adam Castelluccio I hope so because that's the branch I want to join.
In the UK, the rules are (for the Army) that you can't have offensive tattoos, but also you must not have it in a place where it can be seen on your passport. i think that it's the face and neck in general.
can i eat insects or vegetation during the crucible at parris island if i know what to eat?
Sure, if your DI doesn't see you.
wtf
mrJMAN17 are you like one of thsoe weird kids that are quiet but knows their shit? If you are i wouldnt mind having you on my team 😂😂
Bootcamp on the 13th!
best of luck man
What's your mos
How'd it go, man?
All I gotta say was holy shit haha but I'm a marine now!
Congratulations man!! SEMPER FI BROTHER!
0:18 "The preivous commandant's German Anus kinda took tattoos away from the marine corps"If only my life was as interesting as yours.
I'd imagine the no knees and no elbows are so you don't have any accidental damage to those areas from getting tattooed there. not sure how a tattoo could hurt your joints but sounds like the reason to me
Kyle Edwards it's not for health it's about tradition
No lmao
If I was incharge I would allow marines to have any tattoo any wear
sent you a message. This time it will happen. Skype: archiezzle
My recruiter said they're trying to do away with the Jarhead image of the Marine Corps.
1 thing that could be a possibility is gang affiliation.
Ian Smith tru
I bet the people who make these policies have never even been in battle
Kyle Pickens you haven't either
Lucisus Palmer your point?
The only thing I can think of to give reason for the no tattoos in the eblow area would be to keep it relatively easy to spot a vein on the inside of your elbow for if you ever needed a blood transfusion in some sort of combat/medical emergency. I've got no clue about the knees though.
John Burpee as stated above, you can just do an IO. you don't need a vein to give fluids or medications.
John Burpee not sure about blood though, I don't know anything about transfusions.
Lucisus Palmer your trained not to "LOOK" for a vein but instead Feel for one
Only reason I can think of for not allowing elbow tattoos is that it can be hard to find a vein if the skin is blacked with ink. Thats assuming you need to get stuck for some reason.
David Simms you can drill into bone for that. called an IO.
David Simms that's like saying it's hard to see black peoples veins, and as a medic you don't look for veins, you feel for them
Speaking of counter intuitive...that tattoo policy is funny with the arms. Matter as well allow sleeves.
SpraxIAKS so they can see your veins. might save lives
the British army you can have tattoos any where as long as it can't be seen in a passport photo
You still have to be able to cover the tattoo with your hand, with the exception of the band tattoo on the arm.
going though the tattoo waiver process right now
Same how long have you been waiting?
+Isaac about a month now
How did it go?
Wait so you can't have an upper arm sleeve?
So a tattoo on the upper arm does not have to be covered with the hand?? Only on the forearm area??
maybe the elbow/knee thing is because tattoos aren't exactly painless and you won't want to be crawling around on a fresh tattoo? at least I wouldn't. it's one of those things that they don't want anything to hinder your ability to perform.
Thank you.
Super helpfull.
No1 else explained well enough Senper fi

would having a tattoo in these unallowed spaces prevent you from a draft?
Bowdi Miller good question. I'd like to know too. Lol just to know. I'm trying to enlist In the Air Force anyway so this is technically irrelevant to me.
So you can have a forearm tattoo now
i got a tattoo on my lower abdomen, so it looks like im all good
I’m in the DEP and I have a dagger tattoo on my forearm thats in Regs and my SGT and SSGT keep smoking me 😂😂 Old Farts
I have a fish hook on the inside of my finger... I'm guessing that's not acceptable?
I'm a little confused as to the size thing, do the size restrictions apply only to bands? Would a half sleeve irezumi be okay if it ended before the elbow?
JP Morris I'm tryna figure out the same thing, but it's impossible to figure out
When I was in I had arms 19 1/2 inches and was benching 360. The last thing I wanted was a tat messing my arms and pecks up.
Wait I'm confused, what happens if you're already a marine and just so happen to have tattoos that are in the red zones? Do you get kicked out or get in trouble?
You get grandfathered in , but there is certain restrictions
+joey cartagena Like?
+Isaac Reaper restrictions as maybe being pushed for early retirement not being able to put in a package to become a warrant officer or officer or just promotion period

You have to be able to cover it with your hand with fingers conjoined. If it is showing
a little late here, but do you think I can remove section of my arm sleeve to get in?
I want to be a Mariner like after 2 years .....so can I get a tattoo at one of these specified places on my body...????????....plzzz reply to my comment
well, I think I'm save on my tattoo I believe.
I really want to join the Marines this year after I graduate but when I turned 18 me and my girls got wrist tattoos..do i need to get it removed or something before I call a recruiter?
I have a half sleeve, do you think they will still let me join?
now I can understand the face and neck. but the Fucking elbow and the kneecap? what the hell

Well I'm happy about the tattoo policy, at least I know that after I become a marine I can get a EGA tattoo
this is fucked my life long ambition was to join the marines I took the last year to get fit and in shape. but they won't take me because I have a koi tattooed on my lower forearm and the tail is on top of my hand.
my buddy got a half sleeve and got a 6105
Hey ClaytonFilpo what if your tattoo is a religious/ tribal tattoo that is a sleeve like a samoan tribal sleeve?
knees and elbow is simple. that area bends alot and gets blown out alot if not healed correctly then it still can. the marines are supposed to be the best of the best and look the best

i only have two tattoos one on each calf one is the boy scout emblem and the other is an ak47 im mostly wondering if the ak will be allowed
Let's say I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who has just gotten a tattoo that's out of regs. What happens to him lol
Can you get a tattoo on your stomach before you join the marines or Army
Is this still standing? I’m doing research on it right now and I keep finding a lot of contradictory information.
When I was 13, I got a tattoo on my ankle and it’s still very prominent. I got it as a way to reclaim a slur that I was being called but I do not think I’ll be able to join the USMC with ‘FAG’ tattooed on my ankle, and I want to know if I should go with the route of covering it or removing it.
C0MA baby for sure get it covered.
Hey mate ! Just wanna ask more about getting tatted up ? Before get enlisted ? ☺️
My advice: Don't. Or stick very very very closely to the regulations above
+ClaytonFilpo how bout after get enlisted ?
I'd get one on my elbow of macaroni...get it?
Because those areas are needed for access to veins maybe? For IVs?
Would you get kicked out if you're already a Marine and get a full sleeve? I'm not a Marine but I'm just curious
You could. I'd say it's kinda rare to have a command roast you like that, but it's not unheard of.
I have a snake on my arm that goes to the beginning of my elbow and I got fucked lol. I went to the army and now I’m enlisting this week
the army OKs the sleeve (which I have) and when I saw the thumbnail to this video I got a little happy about it but my sleeve won't be OKd? it stops above the wrist about 3 inches
clayton whats a way to message you besides on here reguarding some military mos insight
Instagram mostly
What if you're colorblind and planning to get into the Marines?
You will be fine. You won't be able to do some jobs though.
Thanks! I appreciate it.
My great grandfather was a B-25 Mitchel Bombardier in the Pacific during World War II and later a B-36 mechanic, he was almost completely colorblind.
Well this helps alot i should be good for now
How long do I have to wait to get a tattoo because i want to join the marines and wasn't sure about the tattoos
Andrew Cox whenever you want just make sure you are in the regs
Going to meps next week wish me luck
I went about a week ago, have fun cuz its a blast :l
Ha good luck buddy been to boot done that
My friend who just went told me to not take a morning pee so its easier to pee infront of a old dude haha
me too haha tuesday and wed in jersey
Good luck dude! I went in April for the Marines and it sucked lol. Lots of waiting.
If I pass basic training and become a marine can I get a tattoo in an unapproved spot
Fred Bill no
Can you make a video about fire watch in the USMC
I have two questions one what's the rules on go pros and two what's are all of the qualifications you need to pass to make it to bootcamp
What about your shoulder?
You gotta change that shirt 😂
:D :D :D lol ik bruh shit is tooooo tight. stop by our nightly live streams sometime! We'll be live on my channel tonight at 9 pm est!
ClaytonFilpo still a good ass vid bro 🤙
What if you have a tattoo and the rules change do you have to cover it
Ethan Kramer you most likely will be grandfathered in, wcs just need a waiver
So are half sleeves that end before the 2in mark still a no go?
That's what I wanna know! I've got a half sleeve and 2 on my forearm.
What if i only have an elbow tattoo and i want to enlist for the first time. What are my options I truly want to join the marines and i don't want my stupid decisions i made at 17 to ruin that. Will i have to remove it because i am willing to do that i just wanted to know my options...
You may be able to get a waiver for it. Worst case scenario is you'd have to get it removed. I'd talk to a recruiter and see what they can do for you
what if i have a small cross tattoo on my eye? not in my eye but you get my point lol
No dice, they won't let you in. Also, FUCK THAT DUDE. THAT MUST'VE BEEN PAINFUL
You can still get a waiver.
+Scott T. really even for an elbow tattoo? I'm trying to enlist but I have like a hand or palm sized tattoo over my elbow
Do you think you could get a waiver for an inner lip tattoo?
camas77721 i think you are in the clear
do they physically inspect if you have tattoos and where they are at??
Yes. You have to get every new tattoo documented and photographed.
ClaytonFilpo so what if you have an upper arm sleeve but it's above the elbow? Is that fine or no?
So just to be positive, I can get a tattoo on my chest so lost as it's below the collar/lowcut opening?
That seems like that is fine. Again, do it after you go through bootcamp.
Kat Chan Thanks!
is this only for the marines?
other branches have different standards
Bad Mofo Navy and Air Force have the most absolutely lax tattoo standards.
Im a bit confused. So i got a half sleeve tribal tattoo , i wouldnt be able to enlist?
It stops right before the elbow...
Josh Estrada try for a waiver.
Mason Ashworth do you have to ask for the waiver?
So I'd be good if I got a tattoo on my chest before going to basic?
Dominic Sumner yes as long as you can't see it in green on green your straight you could get your entire torso tatted if you wanted to- active duty lcpl 0341
I got a question
I'm only 17 and really thinking of enlisting maybe Marines
and I got a tattoo on the upper part of my elbow
do you think theyll be very strict on it
You should be ok. Worst case you may need a waiver
+ClaytonFilpo I was also able to cover like 90% of the tat with my hand does that make it any better
anywhere under PT gear is okay?
Im planning to have a US Flag on my wrist that i guess my 4 fingers can cover it all
Individuality?
So you can have a tattoo on your back??
ya
Getting a tattoo outta regs? What does that mean??
Allie Boy regulations
i had a naked girl on my chest and had yo remove it forma the army un 2004
So would a Cross On my forearm be ok if i wanted to enlist?
Probably, as long as it's within regs
Is there a size limit on how big the tattoo can be as long as its above the wrist and below the elbow? Also is there a limit to the number of tattoos that i can have visible?
I put the full and detailed reg in the video description, but this is a quote from it: "As under the previous tattoo policy, officers are limited to four
tattoos visible when they are wearing their PT uniform. There are no
restrictions on the number of tattoos enlisted Marines and officers can
have in areas covered by the PT uniform."
It's cause tattoos can be used by the enemy to identify u
Mason Paulsen no, tattoo doesn't identify you, but wearing it being a us soldier does, dumb ass
This new policy is still BS. This is why I'm possibly joining the Army after this enlistment.
You're not alone. Ik a lot of Marines that have been jumping ship lately.
love that shirt lol
