"St Paul is depicted at an event that chronologically occurred before his conversion to the Christian faith because he, like us, received the Holy Spirit after his baptism. Because he, like us, is called to the Ascension and called to Pentecost because these moments are not just historical moments - they transcend space and time. They are continuous realities in which we can participate through the Church, the same church which continues to be guided by the work of the same Holy Spirit." Really just lovely, as usual. Blessed Feast to you both!
Absolutely! "The icon was devised that man might advance in knowledge & that secret things might be revealed & made perceptible" - Saint John of Damascus
Thanks for making this. Your videos are so helpful and interesting for me as I was received into the Church at Pascha so this is my first Pentecost as an Orthodox Christian.
The Lutheran church we attended in Germany had eastern iconography. Though after moving to a Mennonite/reformed area in Canada, when converting to Eastern Orthodoxy, the icons were not really a hurdle for me since I remember them around me as a child. It felt like home walking into an Orthodox Church.
Masterful. A masterful presentation. And an example of why icons are essential because these images give a tangible explanation of spiritual concepts hard to grasp otherwise. If i ever saw something that exemplifies "a picture is worth a 1000 words, it would be this." I had not expected to be so impressed by this. Never would have expected to feel such a silent, quiet, orderly response to this.. (to allude a bit to your pointing to the orderliness of the Pentecost icon..) As you know, we live in a world in which the coming of the 'Holy Spirit' in some kinds of services is anything but calm and orderly. But anytime i can think of in which i in any way have felt some awareness in me of something coming into me from outside,, the experience was calm and strengthening. I so hesitate to say those words lest i appear to be something i am not or to appear to point to huge experiences that i might have had.... which i have not had. Nor am i setting myself apart in some way.. By no means is that my intention . I am speaking of moments which many of us have surely had when some kind of significant insight or experience resulted in calm , quiet reflection as opposed to another response. This video itself leads to that kind of calm orderliness. Anyway, thank you.. I am pleased to understand Cosmos. .in effect, that that is where all of us stand in the icon.. we don't usually have places in icons.. And, now, i hear the exclamation we sing at Pentecost. It is 'imaged' by those holding books and scrolls and surrounding Cosmos: "THEIR PROCLAMATION HAS GONE OUT INTO ALL THE WORLD! , AND THEIR WORDS TO THE END OF THE UNIVERSE! "** ☦💝📿💝☦ **words i have always loved to sing.

Thank you for this video. I wish there was more explained in connection to Israel. At Pentacost, historically, was and is celebrated as the anniversary of the covenant at Mt Sinai, between God and His people. That covenant was eventually broken by Israel and God promised a new covenant. The original covenant at Mt Sinai is depicted as a wedding, a feast, and God's desire to dwell with His people. But, that covenant was broken. In Acts 1 the disciples ask Jesus if He was now going to restore the Kingdom to Israel. He told them to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of God...
I agree with your teaching there is one thing, though that historians and other scholars insist that it was not just the 12 apostles, but many of the other believers in the room, including Mary, speaking with other tongues, and sharing this experience, and that does matter
Yes. While there are normally only twelve figures depicted in representation of the apostles, they are not all apostles and are representative of the community. There are some examples of the icon that include more people
In Luke's narration, there were Jews "from all nations", and thus there definitely were more than 12 languages spoken. However, the Apostles are the foundation of the Church, with the prophets of old, so they are a metaphor of the whole Church. The Torah was given to twelve tribes of Israel, and similarly the Holy Spirit came upon the twelve Apostles
Attended my first Divine liturgy today on Pentecost Sunday and spoke to a priest. God bless this channel!
A wonderful day to arrive! God bless!
Glory to God!

A sermon in pictures....and what a profound sermon the icons present to us. Thank you.

Welcome! ☦️
Same!
I too!
These are essential. God bless.
As a Lutheran, there is definitely a reason why Lutheran churches are adopting eastern iconography in church rather than western.

As always, a brand new and relaxing Icon Lore!
Amazing☦️🤗😊
With God's good grace, I found a key to Orthodoxy today. Our Redeemer truly answers prayer.
It's a great video - clear and detailed explanations of the icons. These have helped me understand the icons and the theology behind them. God bless.
Thank you. God bless
Thank God! I was baptized into the Church on Pentecost many years ago
I am going to be chrismated in 3 days on Pentecost, it is not only Pentecost but my birthday as well. 🙏🏼 Glory to God

Isn't the colour green associated with Pentecost in the Eastern Orthodox church?
Yes! Green is the colour of new life, and so is associated with the Holy Spirit
Thank you for this and all your work!
