    These 2 guys are proof that even in wrestling where alot of the hype for events is built around storylines and rivalries, its also very much about the wrestling. I firmly believe that Mr P and Bret could have been told 30 minutes before that they had to go out and put on a 30 minute match and they would've been able to put enough storytelling in to make it the match of the night, every night!
    Pure class both!

      I agree. A lot of it boils down to the old "any job can be a great job if you have good workers around you" rule.
      They were both talented, hard men who respected each other, the wrestling business and themselves enough to go the extra mile training and performing. The Bret Hart Masterclass 93 video is amazing as well of you've not seen it.

      I agree with you on all you said. I think it's safe to say that when Bret and Curt had their matches, they'd have a wrestling clinic. They proved that wrestling wasn't about being a giant in size; it was more about being a giant in abilities. In doing that, they demonstrated versatility--like pulling a rabbit out of a hat of tricks to fool their larger opponents. Bret had a number of "David and Goliath" type matches--e.g Yokozuna, Kevin Nash; I believe Curt had some as well--Ray Traylor(a.k.a. Big Boss Man).

    • @glamgal7106
      @glamgal7106 3 года назад +3

      @@at0micwerew0lf That's the KOTR video, right? Now THAT was magic! Just my opinion--I don't know why WWE got rid of that PPV and replaced it with other PPVs that hardly show wrestlers' abilities. I guess the ability to throw someone through a table and break it in half is more important nowadays.

    I had the honor of seeing Hart vs Perfect at the Boston Garden in 1989. I was only 8 years old, and had only been watching Wrestling with my Dad for only a year or two tops, but it blew my mind. I had no idea guys could move around in a ring like that. I was used to seeing guys like Hacksaw Jim Dugan and Hillbilly Jim, not to mention Hogan and just thought that's how guys moved in the ring. Even at the show I was at it was matches like Million Dollar Man vs Dusty Rhodes and Demolition vs The Twin Towers. Going from matches like that to Hart and Perfect was unbelievable.

      Same. This match is what made me a fan of The Hitman. I remember when he first became a singles star after the Hart Foundation stopped teaming together. He had a cool finisher in the Sharpshooter, but I had my doubts he could make it.
      That all changed in this match.
      Mr. Perfect was pretty much the best Intercontinental Champion of the time and maybe the best wrestler in WWE pound for pound. Yet Bret hung move for move and blow for blow with him. 7-year-old me was shocked. I knew Bret was good, but I had no idea that Bret was THAT good.
      And when he made Perfect tap out in the Sharpshooter in world famous Madison Square Garden and held up the title as the new WWE Intercontinental Champion, I knew I had just seen the birth of the next great star. From then on out, I decided that Bret “The Hitman” Hart was the guy I’d be following no matter what.

    I know the NEW GENERATION ERA didnt "draw" like the GOLDEN ERA or the ATTITUDE ERA... But damn, with Bret, Owen, Taker, Diesel, Razor, HBK, Bam Bam, Yokozuna and a young Austin & HHH it was a real treat at times.
    There was some tripe of course (all eras had plenty of tripe) but the mid - top card was strong.
    A good mix of authentic, believable and talented wrestlers, either technically, charisma or look (sometimes all three). Also the popular birth of grey wrestlers who were borderline face/heel like Razor & Diesel.
    The in ring psychology was perhaps the best it has ever been- the majority of story was told in the ring.
    Honestly, with a zing of attitude era flavour coming in, I think this is the wrestling product at it's very best.

    I'd already had a subscription to WWF magazine prior to this, but it was around this time that my grandmother began to rent VHS tapes from our grocery store, and this is one of the first ones (if not *the* first one) I remember her renting for me. With this match in it. I've been a Hitman fan ever since.
    While I never got PPV, because we were poor, watching these video rentals of PPVs when they were available was such a step up from having to wait until the matches were covered in the magazines. Plus I could always rewind specific moments to practice on my wrestling buddy that I had literally beat the stuffing out of.
    Anyway, I deadass just bought a WWE Shop Winged Eagle replica belt to go with my Bret Hart costume for Halloween this year (and just to have of course), but honestly I think at some point I may get the classic IC championship title to go as a different Hitman for another year. And just for the general nostalgia for the era.

    Along with Randy Savage, Perfect and Bret are my top 3 greatest in ring performers.
    But I will say Macho Man was just polished in every angle of the business..

    Back then, as a kid of 12 years, I didn't recognize or appreciate the immaculate work Curt Hennig brought to the ring. Now as an adult, I can finally say: yes, he was perfect.

    Really looking to your deep dive into KotR--that was my first time watching a wrestling PPV, and it made me a total mark for the Hitman ever since. Great stuff

    Thanks for this upload. I think you hit the nail on the head when you referred to this match as the show-stealer at Summer Slam 1991. I remember watching it on PPV and being so engaged in it. I had a feeling that Bret would win because the Hart Foundation split up, he used the Sharpshooter to win the majority of his matches; therefore, it seemed like he was really getting the singles push. This isn't the first time I've heard Bret compliment a wrestling peer as being safe to work with--to me, it shows that he took professionalism seriously.

    I’ve said about several matches such as this one, Macho v Ricky Steamboat, Michael’s v Razor Ramon ladder match, several others.
    You can just tell both guys sat down and thrashed out how they were going to work the match and both started by saying ‘right how do we make this the best match of the night.’ No ego from the guy who was gonna win, no bitterness from the guy who was gonna lose. Just ‘how do we make this the match all the fans talk about on the way home.’

    Mr Perfect was one of the few heels I cheered for most of the time as a 9 year old. Liked Hitman so cheered for him in this one, but often cheered for Mr. Perfect. This was hands down the best match of that SummerSlam. A lot better than the Heaven and Hell main events.

    My First Wrestling Match was Mr Perfect v Bret Hart, Summer Slam 91

  • @rustykuntz94
    @rustykuntz94 2 года назад +2

    Hennig leading up to Summer Slam was almost cutting babyface promos, def a lot more respectful and less Heelish than the usual Mr Perfect schtick. Being that the match was such a classic I always thought it was a great time to let Curt go out there with a babyface turn. Hennig could have shaked Brets hand, raises his arm, hands him belt, would have been awesome with everyone (company wise, not us fans at that time) knowing he was gonna be out for a long time but instead for whatever reason at the end even without Heeling out in anyway they script Bret to almost embarrass Perfect ripping his singlet off and sending him scattering off to the back
