Loving this new "James Vs ____" concept, where you can be a little bit more of a casual viewer while setting aside the *filmmaker* lens to a degree. You're channel name is "James Vs Cinema," so having more video titles like this can really help the brand!
2007-2010 was an incredible streak for Pixar. They did RATATOUILLE, WALL-E, UP, and TOY STORY 3 all in consecutive years (all of them won Animated Film Oscars too). These (along with RANGO's Animated Film Oscar win in 2011) is probably one of my all-time favorite 5-year win streaks in any category at the Oscars.
I LOVE the way this movie handles grief. It's hard to move on, but the people we've lost wouldn't want us to stay frozen in grief and give up on everything. "Thank you for this adventure, now go have a new one" always breaks me 😭
I'm a fan of this new concept of James vs _____ , the lowkey approach and casual commentary is refreshing. Love the variety you're providing, cool as hell
The first scene that really blew my mind as a child was the eagle flight scene in The Rescuers Down Under. I would use the frame-by-frame button on the vcr remote to see every frame of how they did it. I loved those Disney vhs tapes with rough drawing animatic trailers for the upcoming movies. The pencil work had so much richness in the animation.
My 11th grade science teacher played this movie during the last week of school, and that opening sequence from the hospital onward made a whole class of end-of-the-year rowdy teenagers go hushed and somber.
I genuinely love that you - one of the chillest, most easygoing reactors on RUclips - are looking for ways to bring an even chiller and more laid-back energy to your content. It's like an oasis of calm wholesomeness. Plus, I'm super intrigued to hear your thoughts on some more "mainstream" fare like this movie! :)
The first part of this movie is actually inspired by a true story: about 20 years ago, an elderly woman in Seattle named Edith Macefield refused to sell her small century-old farmhouse to developers that were tearing down and rebuilding the whole area. Despite being offered $1 million to move, she insisted on staying in the home until she died a few years later, and it is still standing today, albeit surrounded by skyscrapers.
Carl’s character was voiced by the great Ed Asner. He passed in 2021, but not before reprising the role that year in a short film “Carl’s Date”, released in 2023.
It’s crazy how a movie can be so entertaining for kids and so thought provoking for adults, brilliant work by Pixar. I like this content, please do more 🙏🏼
I was actually gonna ask why you chose such a child friendly family famous movie. But I watched your whole intro and I completely appreciate what you’re saying and the fact that you’re just adding more to your channel. Good on ya mate!
Love the honesty you show in the first few minutes of the vid, James. Been subbed since 2020, found your channel through my love of film and have been an admirer since as I’m just all about movies, photography and art. Keep grinding and keep trying new things, this was a great vid to watch. This movie came out when I was seven, I must’ve seen it about that time although it wasn’t in the theaters. I can hardly remember life without Up, haha that’s how it is with a lot of movies for me. This one still gets me emotional today. The movie makes me think of that time when I was young, different houses and the radio playing in the car, ‘09 man… Your journey has been inspiring for years now, thank you 🙏♥️☮️
Whew, blast from the past right? Love the comment Brian, happy to see you doing your thing and forever appreciate the love! Hope you’re well on your end too!
Would love for you to react to Coco. The emotional depth and character growth throughout the movie is beyond words! My favorite Pixar film was Monster's Inc for years until Coco came out and absolutely blew me away!! I sobbed like a baby when I first saw it!
I'm actually glad you're just going to be absorbing/experiencing this one. It's nice to just sit with the feelings sometimes. ❤ Shoutout to those beautiful pogo mixes 😊
Tangled isn't one of my favorites, but IMO it's the first CGI feature from Disney that captured anything like the liveliness and energy of their hand-drawn animation.
You should watch Demolition Man! One of my all time favorite movies... well it's more of a prophecy really. Wesley Snipes plays one of the greatest action villains of all time in that one!
I want to see the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. I love that building and got to climb it in assassin's creed lol. Also keep throwing random stuff our way. I dont care the movie. I just like hearing your thoughts on any film
The first animated thing i really noticed the art was Final Fantasy Spirits Within.. not that it was a great movie but the animation was incredible for the time, i remember seeing individual hairs flowing in the wind on a character's head and being wowed.
You mentioned watching iron giant again, but another movie from around that time that I feel like goes under the radar is Treasure Planet. Great movie, check it out if you get a chance!
This style is ok, gets out a bit more of your personality. Just one small thing. You need to record yourself on a seperate track if it is the reason you have those small silent periods when you clip to yourself.
If you've never seen it, I think you would be astounded by the acting, script and film making of Elia Kazan's "On the Waterfront" from 1954. One of Marlon Brando's finest performances. Winner of 8 Oscars, including best actor and best picture.
Ed Wood! I'm guessing you've seen it, but if not, for context, I would suggest watching Chris Stuckmans review of ed wood's masterpiece, "plan nine from outer space" Ed wood was an independent "filmmaker" often referred to as having made the worst movie of all time.
The Iron Giant is a movie me and my brother watched so many times we not only memorized the script we started watching it on mute and making up our own dialog, one which iteration focused on the giant's immense desire to find a lip-balm (specifically Chap-Stick) that works on metal lips, pretty sure we used a box fan to emulate a robot voice too. So to put it lightly, I would love to hear your thoughts and analysis of The Iron Giant! P.S. The culmination of my brother and I's story was (spoiler alert) the nuke that was going to kill everyone was the only thing that could be used as lip-balm for an alien robot. I'm in my mid 30's and just the mention of that movie came back so vivid!
Especially excited to see you expand and share your chillness and creativity, James! Ooh Iron Giant would be wonderful as a reflection to how you see it as an adult vs how you appreciated as a kid.
You should 100% watch the iron giant. I understand what you mean as it may be more "RUclipsry" but you've built this community around yourself and your chill magnetic personality not what you watch. We love you dawg🫶
Beauty and the Beast was the first to use the digital animation (i think?), and i was 14 or 15 when it came out. The ballroom scene was gorgeous on the big screen...Be our Guest was magical. Every frame was so well done.
There were 3 dogs in the area I grew up that were scary af. Sweep, Bandit and Butch. A Border Collie, a Whippet and a Dalmatian/German Shepherd cross. I had to hurdle over fences, bushes and hedges to get away so many times. Good cardio though lol.
In the past everything looked good to me, even early 3D films like Toy Story. I'd say that Kung Fu Panda was the first 3D animated movie that I really noticed the beauty of.
damn James, really love the format. i follow you since you started Breaking Bad, cause i'm a fan ofc; really digged your vibe, loved the commentary and pov since the first time! it's so good to see you're making this more casual kinda thing and puttin' your heart in this new type of content. i really appreciate the good work whenever i see it. please keep it up with the VS videos! they feel like coming home from a cold morketid :) cheers from Argentina! 🇦🇷
I remember the animation style used in 101 Dalmatians (original) was just so different than the Disney princess movies. I loved it so much. But few animations compare to Bambi. That was an amazing achievement
6:20 - James knows POGO!!???? Bruh I absolutely love pogos stuff. His remix of Alice in Wonderland - called ‘Alice’ is one of my favourite pieces of music ever
I'll never forget when I saw this in theatres for the first time. By the time we got to that scene I figured we were past all the emotional landmines as we were in the final minutes and the story had been told. Then Carl pins that badge on Russell and *BAM*, waterworks. 😭
Dude I've been watching for a while now. Don't give apologies for introducing more of YOU into your own content. I wouldn't be a fan of your videos if I didn't want to watch "James" P.s. I graduated from college recently and I just wanted to let you know that you were there a lot for me in bad times. I just wanted to show some real appreciation
The first 10 minutes of this is a film making class with almost no spoken language. Enjoy. Might I suggest other underrated films. Check out "Once Upon a Time in The West" ,"Harvey" and "Rope". The first animation that grabbed my attention was the devil in Fantasia.
Just to clarify, Pogo aka Christopher "Nick" Bertke never worked for Disney, didn't make any music for this movie (all of Up's music was composed by Michael Giacchino except the last 3 which were made by Skywalker Sound) and has a "controversial" history with topics such as feminism, and the gay community, among other things
I've come up with a sudden theory! Russel's dad wasn't as the ceremony because he's in a search party tracking the GPS Russel accidentally dropped at the beginning of the movie. Russel's parents, or maybe just dad (like seriously what about mom?), seem to be fairly well off overall. Just the design of the GPS makes me believe the time-frame of events is happening sometime from the mid 1980's to late 1990's, because a large unidentified object just simply would not fly (no pun intended) during the cold war or after 9-11. A beyond thrown to the wind theory, we don't know anything except Carl and Ellie met when they were kids, and maybe everyone who died, died; Carl outlived everyone he knew, so what about Ellie's family? Like no extended family? No friends? I think Russel might be related to Ellie
Ha! Funny - I'm watching this video while on my trip to the countryside of Italy, both Tuscany, Puglia, and (soon) the Dolomites. You'll love it, James.
Golden opportunity for a "What's 'Up', guys?" joke missed. :( I kid. I did enjoy this well enough - maybe I'm just used to you viewing things through the cinematography lens, so that's what I usually like to expect. It's a sad state of affairs if it's the algorithm pushing you out of this niche I like so much, but I don't begrudge you a change if that's also what you want irrespective of money. Looking forward to whatever you've got coming!
Shoutout to Pogo! Wow, that takes me back. It's been a hot minute since I've listened to his stuff, but it's great. His "Up" remix is classic, and his "Bangarang" for the movie "Hook" is a true banger.
I’ve already been everywhere I always wanted to go. Italy is the PRETTIEST country I’ve ever seen! I liked Japan allot too for the geekery and fine art too. Peru for the food and music.
The child actor you threw shade at is named Jordan Nagai. This was literally his 1st role out of the handful of voice gigs he got in his brief acting stint. The director, Pete Docter, described Nagai as very talkative but also very nervous during recording sessions. Out of 400 auditionees his voice was the one that fit, so Docter coached him through it with the patience a good director should have. Because you asked: for me it was seeing Treasure Planet when it was in theaters, gobsmacked at how they could paint such an immersive picture. Ironically this was what Disney execs *pretended* was the straw that broke their backs in supporting hand-drawn animation. (I'll spare you the tin-foil-hat rant on the subject.) Pixar does a lot of Star Wars references. The company started as a branch of Lucasfilm, until George Lucas sold it to Steve Jobs.
My hot cinematic take is that this is a mid tier movie with a top tier 5 minutes in it. Bring this movie up with anyone and see what they mention or even remember about it. While I'm getting people mad, for any AtLA fans I have a similar take about ToBSS (s2e15), except it's 30 seconds instead of 5 minutes.
I like this new series of yours. I hope to see more episodes in the future. 7:20 Fantasy wise, I would love to travel to the fantasy world of Harmony. It has alien tech and ruins with paranormal talents galore. Plus, adorable creatures that are known as dust bunnies. (Picture a very miniature flying bison from AtlA that have a physic powered second set of eyes minus being able to fly and that's a dust bunny.) Reality wise, several places tbh, but first London over in the UK. So I can reunite with my best friend then to visit Baker Street and all the museums and everything. 11:10 The Great Mouse Detective. Some of its artwork just blew me away as a child. (I was like two when I first saw it on TV.) The artists captured that late Victorian atmosphere so perfectly. 14:04 You are probably right that there is some video arguing that view. I've seen some crazy cartoon theories out there. 28:09 I saw it around 2009/10 with my mom. It was within a year of my dad's passing, so it hit both of us hard yet it also greatly encouraged my mother and me to go do more adventures for adventure is out there.
I remember when I was a kid I was really confused watching Beowulf. I unserstood that it was an animated movie, but my mind was tricked into thinking it was real
Im going to show my age just a bit here, but the first animated movie I saw that made me think, "wow, how beautiful." Was The Huntchback of Notre Dame, not many people these days have seen it, and most that have saw it as a child. It hits completely different as an adult, animation and story wise. The first thing most people think is, "wow, Disney, you made this for kids?!" But, it will always be my favorite Disney movie, you can just see the work and dedication that was put into that film, from the heart wrenching story, to the animation, and the music. If you haven't seen it, you should.
The giant Kevin puppet at Disney World gives me so much glee and joy, I don't even have the words. Something about this giant fake bird interacting with people is amazing.
Loving the added commentary and slightly less talk about the technical. I enjoy hearing your professional thoughts but now i feel like i know you and your character better
I would do anything for you to react to my favorite movies la la land and blade runner 2049 (Ik you like blade runner 2049 as well but would love your commentary) love the channel tho brother ! Keep doin you
About the intro, dude you seem so chill we'd love you see your work and I love the vids (especially mr robot) but even the shows n films I've never seen
Every single one of your videos I try to watch , I think "boy I wish this guy would hit pause on the video then speak". So many good parts just go unnoticed on so many good movies. I can never get past the first 15 minutes of your "analysis" before clicking something else.
Always brings a tear to my eye. They need to make more movies that tell stories like this. As for our favorite travel places, Turkey and Mexico City. We took a tour that circled the entire country of Turkey in 17 days, then added 4 days to explore southeastern Turkey. Felt completely safe, very welcoming country, very modern and yet the oldest settled place in the world.
A good candidate for 'James' would be the anime Shinsekai Yori. Also one of the best anime ever made IMO. Might be a bit too underrated and could fit Filmmaker more tho.
You asked where we wanted to go or where our favorite place to go is. I was just online with some of our people in Syria. If it ever becomes possible to go there, I was to go spend time with them. I've been to Venezuela, but haven't been to Angel Falls, what this place is based on. You used to be able to go and get a visa upon entry. Then they started making us go to the Venezuelan Consulate to apply for visas. Each year there was more and more requirements to get a visa. Then they finally denied our visa and we weren't able to go back. Many Venezuelans were leaving Venezuela and we've helped some to immigrate to the US. So I love Venezuela. I'll be in London for the fourth time in a couple of months. Since I was deployed there, Saudi Arabia holds a special place for me. I was just there last year. India is an immensely fascinating place. My wife and I love to vacation in the Virgin Islands. My favorite place so far to visit has been Lebanon. It's so sad the strife there, but someday I hope to go back. I do want to visit the archaeological sites in Israel, Jordan, and Egypt someday.
yo, is there any plans to watch My Name Is Earl? that show is way deeper than it looks while being a funny comedy. It’s all about bad people wanting to better themselves and learning to go beyond people’S appearances.

Ratatouille is my ISH!
@@JamesVSCinema I HIGHLY recommend RANGO.
@@axr7149yeah I agree, Rango is a MUST WATCH.
@JamesVSCinema hey man love your content
We all need a reaction to Zootopia so badly! It's a must even if you've seen it already haha 😂
Man Rango is so wild lmao sometimes I think that movie was a fever dream!
You witnessed in its full glory Pixar's ability to make us cry with barely any dialogue in the opening scene. This was truly their golden age.
Then they got Disneyfied.
I LOVE the way this movie handles grief. It's hard to move on, but the people we've lost wouldn't want us to stay frozen in grief and give up on everything. "Thank you for this adventure, now go have a new one" always breaks me 😭
James vs Grave of Fireflies. It's not Gibli's first, but it is where they really got everything broken in.
Whoever wrote that opening and the reveal with Ellie's adventure book _gets it_ - and movie hits differently now after losing my 'Ellie.'
Sorry for your loss.
So sorry to hear that ❤️
I'm a fan of this new concept of James vs _____ , the lowkey approach and casual commentary is refreshing. Love the variety you're providing, cool as hell
Glad you enjoy it! Happy people are digging it.
“That bird is Eric Andre” - best quote ever
The open sequence is a master class in non verbal story telling.
I don't care if it was animated, that opening montage is a masterclass in film making!

And in Dug, a short animated series about Carl and the Dog living it up.
Also Jedi Master Vrook in KoTOR and KoTOR 2.
James! That dog story and the phrase "throwing hands at a dog" has convinced me you'd fit in with the Always Sunny cast 💀
Also him repeating "time to roundhouse" when he saw the stampede of dogs
It’s crazy how a movie can be so entertaining for kids and so thought provoking for adults, brilliant work by Pixar. I like this content, please do more 🙏🏼

Ha! Funny - I'm watching this video while on my trip to the countryside of Italy, both Tuscany, Puglia, and (soon) the Dolomites.
You'll love it, James.
Golden opportunity for a "What's 'Up', guys?" joke missed. :(
I kid.
I think INSIDE OUT was after this, and then Pixar just became a sequel factory. They've not been the same since.
(I'll spare you the tin-foil-hat rant on the subject.)
Pixar does a lot of Star Wars references. The company started as a branch of Lucasfilm, until George Lucas sold it to Steve Jobs.
I fast forward or walk away from the beginning of this and I only watch the beginning and middle of Million Dollar Baby. Ef these movies.
My first video that thought was amazing was the 1940 version of Fantasia. 💗
The first time I saw the Aardman short "Wallce & Gromit:The Wrong Trousers" I was very impressed with how cinematic director Nick Park made it.
I like this new series of yours. I hope to see more episodes in the future.
7:20 Fantasy wise, I would love to travel to the fantasy world of Harmony. It has alien tech and ruins with paranormal talents galore. Plus, adorable creatures that are known as dust bunnies. (Picture a very miniature flying bison from AtlA that have a physic powered second set of eyes minus being able to fly and that's a dust bunny.)
Reality wise, several places tbh, but first London over in the UK.
Pixar's movie Soul is incredible. It's about death and life.
"that bird is eric andre" I AM LOSING ITTTTT
Hey, uh… maybe don’t shout out Pogo. He said some transphobic shit a while back. Don’t know if he still holds those views, but uh… yeah.
I absolutely love New Zealand! It is beautiful there! UP! is one of my favorite animated films.
holy shit I haven't heard of Pogo in years!! you've just unlocked a whole bucket of memories for me
That first 10 minutes goes from happy to sad and is a masterclass in
animated film making.
Pixar knocked it out of the park with this !
I would do anything for you to react to my favorite movies la la land and blade runner 2049 (Ik you like blade runner 2049 as well but would love your commentary) love the channel tho brother ! Keep doin you
I would love to see your reaction to 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels'. It's a clever/twisty comedy with Michael Caine and Steve Martin.
As a 02' baby, this was a staple movie for me growing up. Thanks so much for reacting mate. Love from Aus
The Air anime TV series from 2005 looked jaw dropping when it came out.
My immediate thought at 3:20 was THE IRON GIANT and then you called it, hope to see it
A good candidate for 'James' would be the anime Shinsekai Yori. Also one of the best anime ever made IMO.
Might be a bit too underrated and could fit Filmmaker more tho.
James VS The Little Prince(2015).It's a really good kids film
Lmao your glasses look a lot like mine. And yay! You know Pogo! I got into his music when I was still in college 2008 - 2012.
yo, is there any plans to watch My Name Is Earl? that show is way deeper than it looks while being a funny comedy. It’s all about bad people wanting to better themselves and learning to go beyond people’S appearances.
