Timeline of the PHILADELPHIA 76ERS' REBUILD | From "TRUST THE PROCESS" to Contention

  • The Sixers hired Sam Hinkie as general manager in 2013, and he instituted a radical rebuilding plan. Rather than try to field the best-possible team, he focused on a long-term strategy that saw the team acquire numerous draft picks in trades and draft injured players who would not immediately improve the 76ers but who could prove to be steals once they healed.
Hinke’s plan ultimately proved fruitful, as the Sixers lineup featuring young stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons qualified for the playoffs.

Hinkie got screwed over when he was pushed out. The Process was radical but it was working. All that cap space. All those first round picks. All the young talent. I have no question he would've gunned after big name free agents with that cap room and probably could've been successful in doing so. Instead it all gets screwed up by Colangelo and Elton Brand. Now the Sixers are back in playoff mediocrity. The same place they were in prior to Hinkie's arrival.

I am not going to try to predict what he would have done had he still been there but I feel his vison would have been better than what is currently there. Not that Brand has been great, but I think they were right to push Hinkie out.
Who knows if Okafor would have worked out in any circumstance, but part of the problem with Simmons and even Embiid to a lesser extent is they never had a coach and front office to push them to be leaders cause of the "Fuck it, we'll just get a high draft pick later on" attitude.
I feel like if Philly had the mindset of a front office like San Antonio, Toronto or Memphis, they are a borderline dynasty by now.

I will give that Jahil Okafor was a big miss. I feel they drafted him with the idea of trading him for more but he was acquired just as big men of his skill set saw their value diminish.

The Butler sign and trade (and even getting two wings in the first place) was the straw that broke the camels back. Don’t see why you’d EVER choose Richardson and Harris over JB. It put Ben in a position where his weaknesses wouldn’t be covered on the floor bc yes he distributes but he worked really well in the post with JB on the wing. Ben was always better on the break than in sets, especially when those sets weren’t running through him. Not somebody who’s gon touch the ball every play and create his own. Terrible personnel decisions overall that set them back years.

Life-long fan here. I loved the Process Sixers. The Sixers were unintentionally bad or intentionally mediocre for my entire life except for about 3 seasons (from 99-02). For the first time in my life they had a plan to do more than tread water. They never had a plan for building a team with AI. They just found a bunch of re-treads and hoped for the best. For heavens sake, they gave away Barkley when I was a little kid and almost gave away an AI in his prime for Eddie Jones because he couldn't get along with Larry Brown. They should have bottomed out in 06-07, but instead of trading AI for quality picks and young players, they got Andre Miller who played well-enough to keep them at the back-end of the lottery.
The Process ended in 2016 when they hired Jerruh Colon-Jello. Their biggest mistake was maxing Harris instead of Butler. They received a mulligan on the Fultz trade-up and pick, but they haven't been able to overcome letting Butler go.

I don't know why but I have been heard so many news now about Harden to the clippers exchange for Kennard, Reggie, Batum and Morris and round picks. Maybe the players in the team don't like Harden and Harden do not want to reduce his salvary so forces trade again.

@@jaywarvz But for my point of view clippers trades will always be secretly and incredible for example the Powell and Covington one which no one thought that will happen. Clipper's trade will not be too obvious and fanfare it will always be silent including the Paul George Trade and sigh Kawhi Leonard which no one think that will happen but still made it. The obvious trade for the clippers will not actually easy to happen for example this year so many media said they want Kyrie, John Wall and Eric Gordon but they still didn't make that move.

    1. Fire Hinkie
    2. Get sent home by Kawhi
    3. Hire Elton Brand
    4. Choose Tobias over Jimmy
    5. Horford trade
    6. Ben Simmons passes on a wide open dunk
    7. James Harden delivers his usual Playoff performances
    8. Embiid keeps getting injured
    9. Win a championship...?

Yes, all those bad choices from 2016 onwards etc.etc. ... but it's just poetic justice done right that those process teams never got better results than 2012 roster. Disbanding it was dumb, and hiring incompetent hinkie was doubling down. What he did for years was an insult to sportmanship, and the 76ers just don't deserve to win exactly for that. From a 76ers supporter. (even if pretty much ex watcher of nba overall)
