It´s Vegoari here in Sweden (maybe more countries has it as well?). So I want to promote vegan food and lifestyle and I think my readers would love to know about you. I´m wondering if it would be okay to use your picture in my blog post when I write about you? I will link to your sites and let them know that the pictures are owned by you 😊 Have a great day.

i eat a balanced diets which includes meat and fish and dairy as it's the best source of protein your body can get, you don't need to eat large portions of meat fish dairy etc, everything in moderation and you don't need to eat meat or fish every day as long as you eat plenty of vegetables and some fruit with your meals that gives you the balance .... i live in a country with lots of farming land unsuitable for growing grains or have the climate to grow most fruits and vegetables .... my country mainly grows fruits like berries, strawberries, raspberries etc and that non arable land is only suitable for rearing cattle, and my country is almost surrounded by seawater so we have a abundance of fish and shell fish to chose from

I have eaten some vegan plant based meals for a long time while remaining an omnivore. It made this transition easier for me. Why does gluten free get enmeshed with vegan? Like, what’s up with that‽ a carnivore diet is gluten free, why should vegans avoid gluten? Obviously people with celiac disease need to avoid gluten, but that’s completely independent of eating meat or not.
More than once I’ve been in a restaurant and asked if they have vegan choices and been told “we have a number of gluten free dishes” and I’m like, “that’s nice but do you have anything made without meat, eggs, or dairy?” and I get a blank stare in return.

I recently say a bottle juice in the grocery store with a label “non GMO and gluten free!” and I had to wonder what juice *has* gluten in it (for that matter, I doubt many juices have GMO fruits in them either, but I don’t know about that) it seems to be a generic term to indicate “more better” or something like that.

I would add another mistake that many people make: going waaay overboard with fiber too early in their "transition". If someone has had a standard 15-20g of fiber a day western diet, when they introduce more veggies, oatmeal for breakfast, legumes once a day, they will have a lot of GI issues. I think meat substitutes and tofu/seitan/tempeh for protein and pasta/white rice for carbs should be the staple in the early weeks of a vegan diet, together with probiotics to help your gut biome adjust to the new lifestyle

It's OK to eat things like white rice occasionally, especially if the rest of the meal has fiber. You can still easily reach 30+ grams of fiber a day on a such a diet.
Soluble fiber should be alot less irritating than insoluble fiber. Oats shouldn't be a problem for most people, for instance, and oats are also a good prebiotic.

    • @discogoth
      @discogoth 2 года назад +2

Yes. Especially because a lot of people who go vegan but haven’t previously been vegetarian or eaten much fiber will have absolutely wild gas and diarrhea. Then they’ll go back to eating meat after a week and run around claiming veganism is terrible for you and it’s not possible to be healthy or feel good as a vegan. All because they haven’t taken the time to properly adjust. Whenever someone says to me “yeah I was vegan for, like, 8 days and it was horrible, I had such bad gas! It’s impossible to feel good, idk how you handle feeling sick all the time!!!” I’m like “okay, Amber, what did you eat in those, like, 8 days? Because I feel fine.” And 8/10 times it’s because they overloaded on the fiber and beans when they hadn’t eaten a bean or vegetable in a year.

I understand exactly how you feel, but please don't take it too personnaly! Your family, just like mine, is simply too rooted in the way they have been taught, and it is really hard to go against one's culture/heritage.
I had to turn 40 and had to have a lot of health issues before I turned to veganism. Imagine : granddaughter of a butcher, granddaughter of a farmer producing milk, coming from one of the french regions that produce the most cheese, and living in a place where butter is king. How could I even imagine becoming vegan? XD
So we have to try and be understanding, too. Eventually people will help and empathize, but it can be frustrating, especially when you are hungry! Some others will never empathize - let them be. My father still asks if I want meat... But he also still asks if I want coffee when I have never had a cup in my life. So... LMAO
The key is to bring vegan substitutes that you can easily heat up or add to the served meals. Just ask that they cook veggies or rice/pasta separately from meat or fish. That in itself is a true relief! If they make that effort, then you won't feel cornered.
It also helps to bring some yummy homemade treats XD - when it's delicious nobody cares if it's vegan or not!
I wish you all the best, sending you cheers.

This is so true. On ordering a vegetarian dish at a local restaurant, it came with fried ham on top. When we asked why there was meat on our vegetarian dish, we were told it wasn't meat. It was jamon (ham). We are also told that the traditional galician dish 'caldo' is vegetarian, but it is made with stock from boiling ham and beef bones . The concept of vegetarianism, let alone veganism, is really not understood in a society where vegetables are not served (mostly) in restaurants here - just meat and chips.

We have been plant based for decades and one thing to remember is some folks who want to become plant based/vegan worry about making mistakes which will cost them money, especially if like some of us, they have a food budget.
So I like to suggest that folks simply take the foods they like and tweak them so they are plant based. And once a person finds what dishes they like they can also aim to have a well stocked pantry with non perishable items like various pastas, rice's, canned vegetables, coconut milk, nuts, herbs and spices which saves money in the long run and makes for quick and easy meals.
We like making a big pot of meatless chili using TVP (textured vegetable protein like Bob's Red Mill sells), or commercial plant based meat crumbles, and use the chili for chili cheese (vegan cheese) fries, tacos, filling for a baked potatoes, 'meat' sauce for lasagna, spaghetti etc.
Hearty potato soup with vegetables, various hearty vegetable soups are both easy and inexpensive. The plant based Mac and Cheese shown in this video is easy and a favorite with all our friends who cannot have dairy. Lots of people cannot have eggs. So being plant based/vegan works well when one has friends who cannot have dairy, eggs and feel left out at parties or avoid accepting dinner invites.

We should be really grateful that nowadays any diet or lifestyle is actually facilitated by what is offered on the market. Our responsibility is to take care of the balance of our body and to protect ourselves from nutritional deficits, which are not uncommon, especially for long-term vegans and vegetarians.

This was an incredibly informative video! It was so thorough and hit on all of the key points that a beginner would need OR an "old" vegan may need some inspiration on. Thank you Nisha for your time putting this together! I would love to see the vegan building blocks video you mentioned :)

Thank you SO MUCH for this! I really appreciate the good advice for new vegans esp mentioning that cutting out oil, fake meats, is not necessary and to make sure you get protein and oil! You are doing a lot of good in the world.

You're most welcome, Kerry! So glad you found the video useful! While fake meats certainly aren't a big part of my diet, they are definitely convenient, especially in the early days, as well as if you live with non-vegan family members and want them to eat less meat!

Vegetable oil is vegan, but there is no dietary requirement for oil. Most vegetables and starches contain a little fat so that just eating enough food provides enough fat. Also free oils damage the endothelial lining of our blood vessels. With covid 19, it's more important than ever to keep our blood vessels as healthy as possible. Virtually all vegetable oils, including olive oil, are high in omega 6. Even in olive oil, the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio is 13:1. Most vegetable oils are almost all omega 6. We need a little omega 6 fat every day but eating vegetable oils takes you astronomically above what we need. Vegan meats that contain "soy protein isolate" are highly processed and even carcinogenic.
The book "The China Study" by Colin Campbell is a great introduction into how to eat for your health, and the truth about the American food industry, mind blowing actually. And the movie "Forks Over Knives" is excellent (no animal cruelty scenes) and based on The China Study. John McDougall, MD has a big website with loads of information for free, and he also does youtube videos on how the key to eating vegan is focusing on starches (beans, potatoes, corn, rice, sweet potatoes, breads/grains).

What was overwhelming to me was mostly the „get all your important nutritions“ thing and cooking. But I guess this is mostly because I didn‘t have any experience in cooking before and mostly didn‘t know anything about nutrition.

your point about not being perfect is incredible. thank you so much; it's such an important point. i started as a vegetarian at a very early age (8) and despite my strong convictions, there was just a lot that i didn't know. it's so important to forgive yourself and to not think that you're somehow "tainted" or imperfect because you consumed an animal product unknowingly. this is a point that i haven't seen others make, but it's so important to state, especially as a long time plant-head.

Thank you. You helped me so much with this video. I am 61 and have been trying to be vegan for a long time. Most times I am 100%. Sometimes I revert back to 2 or 3 favorite non vegan foods but then come back. But then I am challenged with all the different types of vegans out there on the internet - SOS vegan, raw vegan, potato vegan, fruitarians, juicing vegans, no oil, yes oil. No processed vegan foods, etc. The list is endless and frustrating. I keep yo-yo ing from one style of vegan to the other or just reverting back to eating meat products. And I need to lose weight but not being successful. But what you said in the video in the beginning was like a wake up call. I am going to focus on my "why" and then just enjoy the food. I do want to be more compassionate to animals and the environment, I do want to stay healthy to watch my adult children grow and become successful. Once I master that, I can at a later time decide what foods I may or may not want to keep in my diet. Thank you. And I do love your recipes as well.

I enjoy my same overnight muesli base (+ seeds/flax/etc) each morning topped with a variety of fruits and spices (blueberries one day, pumpkin with warm spices the next!). I found your content a few months ago and appreciate you delicious dishes and spot-on advice. You help to keep me excited about vegan food while I try to inspire my husband to join the WF,vegan lifestyle. Your relaxed and genuine demeanor is very enjoyable to watch and I expect you will be reaching that 1M subscribers level! Thank you for your videos

I began leaning into a pescatarian/flexitarian lifestyle several years ago due to health issues. I felt so much better that I transitioned into vegetarianism and now incorporate vegan meals in my daily living. My immediate family has finally accepted my choices, but I don’t have any family or friends who embrace this lifestyle. I usually just bring my own meals, but I am always prepared for some comments or continue to be offered meat to “try”. Your thoughtful, kind, You Tube videos are my support system AND offer delicious ideas that I would not have ordinarily tried. Thank you.
