A home security company has been accused of ripping out the signs of rival businesses and using deceptive practices to convince homeowners to switch to their alarm systems. The company, Alder, held a training session where Inside Edition producer Charlie McLravy attended while posing as a recruit. An Alder salesmen was caught on camera trying to convince homeowners to switch their ADT contract by offering a free upgrade. ADT is currently suing Alder for deceptive and misleading sales practices. #InsideEdition

I told him I wasn't interested and then called the company to ask did they send someone to my home. They didn't know a thing about it. I thank Jesus that I didn't listen.

The company uses subcontractors in some remote areas and that can confuse people

The home security business is ruthless. When I bought my first house in a new neighborhood, I had several security system salesmen come to my house trying to sell me a system. I ended up calling ADT directly to schedule an appointment. Less than an hour before my scheduled appointment, a security guy rings the bell. I figured it was the guy coming for the appointment so I let him in and we talked. He ended up selling me Central Security instead of ADT. My house was pre-wired so really the only thing they put in is the box, a sign in front, and info about the monitoring service. About 10 minutes after the guy left, the actual ADT guy calls and says he is on the way. I thought I had just been scammed so I called the first guy back and asked who he was. Ended up, the guy was legit and I actually got a security service. He even sent me a $100 rebate check after the first couple of months. I would be much more careful next time. Multiple salesmen looked for houses without signs and kept harassing them until they would cave. A neighbor of mine without a system said he caught on video one salesman jump his fence in the middle of the night and start banging the back door acting like a robber to try to scare them into buying a system. I’m very thankful for companies like Ring and Arlo these days that let you setup your own systems and not deal with these ruthless salesmen.

Besides security alarm companies, look out for ANY door to door salesman. Anybody taking things from your property is called theft. If they're legitimate, they will welcome you to call the local or national office to confirm their identity and actions. Any attempts by them to shrug you off or dismiss you is a huge warning sign. If something don't seem right about the person or situation, it probably isn't and your instincts is cautioning you to beware.

It's not illegal to sell an alarm system to someone who already has an alarm system any more than it would be illegal for a cell phone company to try to switch you over.

I've been a door to door salesman for 10 years in two different industries not alarm systems. I always save them money. Unfortunately it's scum bags like this guy and this company that gives us all a bad name. I truly love what I do and I love helping families. On behalf of us sales people who hold our customers in high esteem I am truly sorry.
Same here in the pest control industry, it’s one reason adding value to your service so the customer can see our service is better and make their decision to switch over, but it’s another thing directly targeting homes that already have a company and try to manipulate them into switching over

This is how ALL journalism should be. I'm sure if more media outlets did stuff like this to corporations, they'd have TONS of stories of shady businesses taking advantage of people.
My mom fell for this in Kingman AZ I caught it in a couple hours and was able to get it stopped within the 24 hour window and had to call the police to escort the salesman from the property and get the attorney General lnvolved to get the illegal harassment stopped. So don't back down from them and don't be afraid to call the attorney General.

I used to be a salesman for a paint company, and when management switched they had us do similar practices. of course, i quit that day and found a much better quality, and much better paying job at a concert venue! although I never did it myself, I did go through training (before I realised what it was) and my boss said the same exact thing, "isnt this a scam?" "heck no! its absolutely not a scam!" best advice I can give is not to give any salesman the time of day, if theres a problem with your service, they will call you before showing up at your door

Had a Vivint rep do the same thing to me! Came to my house pretending to be from my security company Ackerman saying he was there to "upgrade" me to a newer system. Reported him to Ackerman and the BBB. Apparently Vivint is doing this to a lot of current Ackerman customers all over Atlanta and Washington DC. This is just disgusting!

I love how they make it sound like Alders the only company to ever do this ever like no other company has or currently does. It's very easy to understand that the reason why they target someone who already has a security system to switch over is because they know that that's a customer that has a need for their product they want to have that customer for themselves so why not just convince them to go with you instead of another company versus trying to produce a brand new customer somewhere else.
