Some of the ways you're describing The Secret Agent and Joy in the Morning is kind of how I'm feeing about East of Eden right now. He really seems to be exploring what I'm calling the ugly side of humanity, the things people do and the ways people are that we don't really want to acknowledge, and some of those things make me go, do I really want to continue reading this? But then the story just pulls me in and I don't want to put it down. It's a very weird combination.

@@Coffee_and_a_Book it’s a difficult story, but it’s incredibly worth sticking with it. 💕 It is a very strange juxtaposition of feeling.
Joy in the morning and Secret agent aren’t even close to as hard as East of Eden.

I had a Joseph Conrad book on my shelf for ages and ages, intending to read it, and I never did so I eventually unhauled it. 😆It sounds like it would be more work than its worth to read it, honestly. I don't mind a book delving into the "underbelly" of humanity as you put it, but the Kafka part give me pause. 😜 How nice of your hubby to give you some time to film in quiet. I'm finding that an issue this summer with all of us home at the same time!

@@insearchofwonder I think Kafkaesque in the philosophical/psychological tone but not kafkaesque in weirdness 🤭
Conrad is definitely not for everyone.

Hi Deea! Nine Coaches Waiting is actually next on my Mary Stewart “calendar”. I like the inclusion of a romance in her books, but I always feel like the male characters are sort of jerky. I don’t understand what the female protagonist sees in them. I think maybe Stewart does this in part to include the men as possible suspects, but for me the end result is that you wish the woman would either be on her own or else find someone better, LOL!

      Hello , my friend!
Yes, I think that is why I never quite believe them. They are cinematic and "for effect". I liked 9 coaches best out of what I have read of hers so far. I think Rose Cottage is next for me.

"Sir Hereward and Mr Fitz" was such a good pick for a light-hearted fantasy buddy read. I enjoyed discussing it with you - even when we were rolling our eyes at the cringey parts of Sir Hereward.
Dallerfut was good, but I found it just okay instead of really fun. I think reading the physical book would have been better for me. I went with the audiobook, and the narration by Eden Jun was kind of flat and monotone. I picked it up when it was new and hadn't been reviewed yet. I just went back and saw that a lot of people agree - someone said it was hard to focus because the narrator sounds like a "train station announcer" and it's true 😬

🤣Thanks for being there to be nauseated by Hereward's hot-to-trot moments with me!
I really loved the concept of Dallergut. The idea of dreams being designed like video games, and the main characters are so kindly and lovable. I hope maybe you give it another go in written form one day!

So fun hearing your thoughts, Deea. I’ve read a few of these. I agree that Mary Stewart is great at atmosphere, but her romance is meh-ish. 😂

      Hiiiii Amy!!
The guys in her "couples" always seem to be a plot device rather than truly in love. 🤭😅 That's okay - the mystery was excellent!
