- Paleo Profile is back! Today we look a super-weird Triassic long necked reptile, Tanystropheus! We will examine what this animal used it’s long neck for, what it ate, and where and how it lived.
Hope you enjoy!

To see that creature today on an empty beach doing its thing
Man imagine what a sight that would be.
It would indeed be majestic.
What effect would a crowded beach have? Probably running involved.
yea and animal control on thr scene too
I can't help but imagine that it would look at you and tell you to fuck off.
Definetly
You would see the creature saying:
_____________________👁👄👁
I really want to see a speculative paleo profile on humans, something that shows how future inhabitants of earth would theorize how humans lived based on our fossils, what mistakes would they make as they slowly got closer over time to discovering what we were really like? what would they imagine we looked like?
Yes........................................ Just picture a universe where humans went extinct and aliens came down to earth and looked at our fossils, it would be funny to see how much they would get wrong, it could also be a metaphor about how much we actually know about dinosuarus.
Sorry I got a little wound up there
Charlie Theanteater exactly! I think they'd probably imagine us as a prey species due to our lack of large claws, teeth and just organic weaponry in general (this is assuming, of course that they have only seen our fossils and have none of our tools, technology or buildings which would be ancient at this time), they'd probably imagine that we had nostril slits too, would they ever figure out that we have ears? I doubt it
EDIT: damn I just remembered that only predators have forward facing eyes, hmm I wonder how they would imagine we hunted without the knowledge that we build tools and weapons, I wonder if they'd eventually figure it out themselves without first seeing our tools and weapons?
+Marcus Falco I tired producing a movie about this topic when I was 9 but it was crap and I believe I got rid of it long ago, it would be funny to see aliens reconstruct our fossils into four legged creatures that lay eggs in nests
Charlie Theanteater I doubt aliens would be able to reconstruct human fossils into anything that made any logical sense to us, all their knowledge of how animals look would be based on animals from their planet which I think would look like nothing we had ever seen, if they did try to reconstruct anything from our fossils they'd probably fail to understand how any would fit together and then assume that they were missing several thousand essential parts (I imagined a paleo profile on humans to be done by a future species that originated on earth and had evolved billions of years after some mass extinction event so they would still look like something that could evolve on earth just something we haven't seen before, juts like dinosaurs, assuming they look anything like we imagine them to, they look like a creature that would exist on earth because they did but they just don't look like anything we have living on earth today with a few minor exceptions)
Yeah I think it would be more likely that an other animal would evolve to be smart like we are after we die out than aliens coming to earth and randomly deciding to live here. But imagine traveling to the future with a time machine and having a chat with a two legged dog or something xD, that would be so cool
0:26 Wait a minute, is that Latias and Latios?
sharovipteryx with the color schemes
Fossilmons, gotta dig em all (up)
+The Nightmare Rider you saw that too, wow who knew tere were pokemon fan who also like Paleontology
+Sean Dewar It's pretty common, I guess it's that we grow up with dinosaurs, then see dinosaurian Pokemon like tropius and aggron
Shunosaurus Lii yea that's true
This guy needs to be in ARK: Survival Evolved.
You ride it close to the water, and it bends its head down and grabs fish for you without you having to go into the dangerous ocean.
+Alec Foisy It would be like a cooler fishing rod.
LOL no that would be too hard to tame
+Raishin _L
Yeah probably
They don't seem to want to put actual fishing in the game, so I suppose this would be a good compromise.
Edit: they ARE gonna add functionality to fish meat for piscivores so maybe the Tanny could yield a higher amount of prime fish meat, perfect for getting a good Ptera or Spino tame.
Alec Foisy great idea!!
Here are my ideas for Paleo Profile episodes:
* Megalania
* Alamosaurus
* Therizinosaurus
* Leptictidium
* Lystrosaurus
* Dinohyus
* Terror Birds
I agree
I too agree
Terror birds sounds good.
I don't think that he need ideas. And there's no Megalania... it's Varanus priscus.

We love you Tanystropheus! Plus, it has the cutest nickname ever: Tanny! I love it!
I agree!
+TREY the Explainer Someday, I will name my pet after that dino.
+TREY the Explainer were those two tanystropheus mating when you should that list of the groups.????

The video game Fossil Fighters Champions also featured Tanystropheus, it was the first time I'd ever seen the creature. It was Water type and they definitely drew attention to its weirdest feature by giving it attack animations that had it swinging its long neck. I actually liked using Tanystropheus since other than starting the fight asleep it was fairly strong and fun to watch.
dinosaur then vs dinosaurs now / Genius primate
ruclips.net/video/geZX7qq5o_g/видео.html
Good job on this one Trey, Don't here much about Tany. Could you do a paleoprofile on Giganotosaurus to clear up all the controversy over its size.
and Tany was featured in a Nintendo game called Fossil Fighters Champions, though I don't know how accurately.
+Qwerty Mine
Although Tanystropheus's incarnation in the game is fairly accurate (even mentioning how much drag its neck would have been underwater), the level of scientific accuracy is somewhat limited by the DS's technical capabilities.
Terrance Imagojira I just don't remember because I can't find my copy of the game and I don't remember accurately what it looks like.
+Qwerty Mine Thank you! and probably ;)
Qwerty Mine
_// I do, and I can confidently tell you its neck and tail are shorter than they should be. In addition, the legs are sprawled rather than upright. Otherwise, it's as accurate as can be._
It's amazing that a heart could circulate through such a neck to the head.
That is actually one of the many side note theory's to their extinction that before the asteroid their hearts were giving out due to generations of it being stressed like that.
No idea of all implications but meh.
+Eric Hyland Well the Astroid and the Triassic Period were millions of years apart, so even if it did live through all that it wouldn't look the same.
+Eric Hyland Well not really because for a creature like that to be sustained it would need some way to outsmart gravity and get blood circulating to the head. It would probably have a big heart and could beet faster. Giraffes have long necks and they can get blood to the head so I don't see why this guy can't, now I'm just curious how.
+kieran cow-face I think it's ok for its size. On the other hand, recent study shows that large sauropods' neck cervical ribs can act like check valves to regulate blood pressure, so they are just fine with one heart.
+Chris Tse That's interesting. Thanks.
Great video! I love watching these Paleo Profiles, you're fantastic at being both entertaining and educational without distracting from the point of the video. You've revived my old childhood love for paleontology, can't wait for the next one!
+Heko Taycannis Thanks man! :)
ok.. one single son of a unscientific mom just gave a dislike to the video.. I'm finding he
What do you mean?
+Giovani Barcarolo LOL, 3 hours past and he/she is the only dislike.....
I know, what I meant is that he is still the only that disliked.
+Giovani Barcarolo there are now two dislikes. Probably that son of a bitch' mom...
Bill Cipher exactly..
Please do quetzalcoatlus!
Did he?
0:26 Uh, these are Latias and Latios. Are you telling me that we had Pokémon roaming aroung during the Triassic era? 😉
+Yanna Those are not pokemon. They are Sharovipteryx which the artist colored like those two pocket demons. In my opinion, pokemon is WAY too popular. But hey, to each their own.
Alexander Kelly I know, but I found it funny that they are colored like the two Pokémon. I like the games because they can become very deep and competitive, but I am not forcing you to like it.
"Pocket demons" what the fuck is a pocket demon
It's 5 months later and I'm still confused. How do you get pocket demon from pokemon?
Anthony Nguyen he probably meant pocket monster
sharovipteryx: "oh, you have wings on your arm? yeah, guess what? LEG WINGS!!"
Sharovipteryx was a glider.
A new species for me, never heard about this one before.
In many aspects reptiles and mammald share intriguing similarities. That is something that can explain many things.
Finally couldn't wait for this episode
+Tristan Mereles ;)
+TREY the Explainer Are you going to make a "season" of paleo profile dedicated to these triasic animals? Also your videos are getting better and better just don't make us wait so long , you're driving hundreads of people to insanity.
***** Possibly, the Triassic was full of bizarre and obscure animals. Sorry for taking so long, I've just been so busy lately, thankfully with Summer break I will be more open
TREY the Explainer Don't worry we all know that life just trows huge piles of work at us.
These guys are actually some of my favorite prehistoric animals out there.
”Tanystropheus wasn't aquatic”
The new studies: Allow us to introduce ourselves
Current studies are kinda inconclusive if I'm not wrong, it's kinda just a... well, it wouldn't work very well as an aquatic creature, but it wouldn't work very well as a non aquatic feature, and it's always found right near water but not actually in water so... ?
I don't care that this video is late, im always happy when i see a new video!
he should come to ark and become a fishing rod
they would make it incredebly bigger, as with most of their creatures.
Ark would probably fuck it up... Like what they do to all of their creatures.
Fucking scaly dinosaurs and broken arms
+Seb Gaming videos and more y so much hate to ark
no, i love ark. Just hate arks dinosaur designs
yeah I know what u feel
Best way to end birthday seeing all your favorite youtubers upload vids today, and a Paleo Profile too.
Awesome video man as always :) 2 things
1. can you do a paleo profile on Thylacosmilus or Thylacoleo, it would very interesting to do a prehistoric marsupial
2. You may not know this but there was a mobile game called Dino Dominion wher you are transported to an island full of dinsaurs and you can catch them, get DNA samples of them, and train them to fight, basically a dino version of pokemon, anyways, this game had Tanystropheus as a SS rare character in the marine reptile category, but sadly last year the game was discotinued
This is my favorite episode of paleo profile! What neat creature.
The illustration at 7:55 is absolutely genius. This prehistoric animal could hover over the surface, leaving no ripples or disturbances on the water, and strike its prey from there.
Latios and Latias in the video at 0:26... I have no idea why I find that so funny, but I do.
Bruh it’s so cool 😎
Since my other favorite channels upload so sparingly, i just added this to my favorites ❤❤
9:55 Saurichthys sounds awesome, and I've never heard of it -- a fish having revenge on the flying reptiles that eat its cousins! You should do a Paleo Profile on it!
It's definitely an interesting animal; maybe I'm not sure there's enough info for a full episode
+TREY the Explainer Oh, well. Let's hope science will find out more about it soon.
+TREY the Explainer Maybe do a video on a couple of creatures that have less information on them
Can't believe it took so long for RUclips to bring me to this channel! Trey is such an explainer!
I know you probably get this one a lot, but dilophosaurus paleontology profile. Brush if you don't know there is actually way more behind dilophosaurus than a simple medium sized predator with fancy headgear. WAY more.
Scanova the Carnotaurus Like how it encouraged the evolution of ankylosaurs?
know who REALLY needs more recognition? THIS CHANNEL! seriously top tier content here man!
Very nice video, I always love how informative and entertaining your videos are. I would love to see you made a video about prehistoric Turtle and Tortoise in the future.
+protato911 Thank you! and cool idea ;)
@@TREYtheExplainer So when?
I always imagined Tanystropheus as a fisher lizard. It's ridiculously long neck allowed it to lean over the water watching fish swim under and then snapping them up as they swam by.
Trey is back!
+MadWizard38 yup ;)
TREY the Explainer :)
+TREY the Explainer can you do one on Hyeanodon or Andrewsarchus soon?
+MadWizard38 Alaska is one place I really want to go someday because it's breathtaking beauty in its landscape and its animals
+Becky Todd YES! THAT'S A GREAT IDEA TO TOUCH UPON! 😁
wow the whole line of animals this one belongs to is just amazing !!! thanks for your cool vids
Wait at 0:26 why do the sharovipteryx look like latias and latios?
_Tanystropheus_ was also in 2 Jurassic Park toylines where it had a flexible neck to grab a human action figure ("constrictor neck attack"), which is something it cannot do in real life.
Latias and Latios 😂 I love how you sometimes sneak in thise little things
I love the color scheme Mark Witton gave it. A grayish body that blends in with the coastal rocks and a light color on the neck and head, making it hard to tell apart from the sky if seen from below. It would be pretty much invisible for its prey.
“Long vertebruh”
I don't have much to add, but just think it's really cool how totally different animals evolve to fit the same ecological niches. From Tany to storks, Gallimimus to gazelles. Evolution is so fascinating.
I think you mixed up Therapsids with Therapists in the intro...
He does it a lot in his videos. I wonder if it's dyslexia or something. Pronunciation of any/all scientific names on this channel tends to be butchered.
No, I think he's just a conspiracy therapist.
He has dyslexia, yes.
Aj
@@frogulon8271 j
Nice to have an update on this interesting animal since Marvan.
"The extinction of therapists"
Speaking of Chased by Sea Monsters, the idea of Tany being capable of caudal autotomy, that is, being able to break off its tail when attacked by a predator, like some modern lizards, was actually a legit theory, proposed by a real paleontologist! That idea was actually proposed by German paleontologist Rupert Wild, who was heavily involved in research on Tanystropheus during the 20th century. Notably, he thought that Tanystropheus was closely related to lizards, with it being part of the lepidosauromorphs. But several subsequent studies placed it and other “protosaurs” as archosauromorphs not long after Wild’s initial 1973 classification. In a 1975 paper, Wild cited one specimen from Ticino as allegedly sporting an autotomized tail, with the break-off point being at the 14th caudal vertebra, with textures on the vertebrae supposedly supporting that. However, subsequent studies have all dismissed Wild’s interpretation.
One question: what if a shark bursts out of the water and nabs that neck? How'll Tany protect its neck?
PS These Paleo-Profiles make every prehistoric creature way more interesting.
They probably didn't live near water deep enough for sharks.
@@OtakuUnitedStudio Sounds likely.
This thing is beautiful. I love it.
Just read an article that came out today (06AUG2020) about this animal and remembered this video. Apparently they did CT scans of the skulls and that the skulls suggest they were exclusively aquatic and probably only went on land to lay eggs. They also confirmed that smaller specimens are actually a separate species and not juveniles, which was suspected before but didn't have definitive proof. Anyone know more about this? This video states pretty strongly that there's no way that was the case. The linked paper didn't seem to definitively state that they were entirely aquatic but did seem to suggest it, I'm no expert on this though. Have things really changed that much in the last four years or was that article wild speculation/misinterpretation of the paper?
Article was on scitechdaily, paper DOI: 10.1016/j.cub.2020.07.025 for anyone that wants to look for them.
I'm a coauthor of this study if you'd like to ask me anything :)
We have strong evidence that Tanystropheus was semi-aquatic and most likely hunted in the water. We can't be sure about reproduction though as we haven't found eggs or embryos like we have for other fossil marine reptiles (ichthyosaurs and sauropterygians). But it's limb morphology indicates that it would have been capable of terrestrial locomotion (certainly it would've found it easier than a sea turtle or a seal), so coming onto land to lay eggs is a pretty reasonable assumption.
The Tanystropheus is my favorite Triassic creature!
Did you say therapists used to be an animal group?
Yeah, they couldn't survive in the Permian. Too much competition.
Or it could be an accent.
The illustration in the thumbnail makes it look like an absolute monster. Very sauropod-y. Great artwork
So something about that back leg winged thing
Sharovipteryx, sharovipteryx. A catchy name.
I love your videos. Thanks to you I've learned a lot more about prehistoric animals and really made me more interested in paleaontology. I am so sorry if my grammar or spelling isn't the best, I'm Swedish.

+Super Numbat More like a playful artist's recreation of Sharovipteryx. Sorry, pokemon never really existed, although some prehistoric animals look like the pocket demons.
+Alexander Kelly as soon as scientists genetically code a Pokemon I am going to send an army of them to you
+Eric Hyland looks like I'll be having no audience with you, given how fictional chibi animals with "super powers" won't ever exist. they never have and never will.
+Alexander Kelly Really, Pocket Demons? Come on man, everyone knows it's Pocket Monsters.
Totally worth the long wait
please do a profile on acrocanthrosaurus it is my fav dinosaur
I've always loved Tanystropheus as one of the most amazing and fascinating creatures and this Paleo Profile was very fun to watch and get to learn about this animal a bit more. I've always been optimistic about Tanies habitat and environment and how it behaved with its long neck and this gave some good insight into that. Thanks Trey and have a Merry Christmas!
Can you maybe do an episode on the unfortunately named synapsid called "Dinosaurus"? I mean, it got renamed, but man that is a weird name to call a synapsid.
It was actually named just before dinosaurs!
+Rex H.G. Chen oh hey dude! you should know me from skype
What is a dinosaurus?
Love this Trey :)
Great Job!!
You should do a video about Allosaurus. Allos are my favorite dinosaur :3
Thank you and I will plan on it ;)
Why were there Latias and Latios?
+Deinotherium it isn't because latios has its mark under its chest.
Looks like Microraptor imo.
I find it fascinating that reptiles have repeatedly evolved long necks. When you look at not only Tany, but also plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, sauropods, and theropods (birds), the long neck morphology appears again and again.
Can you make one about the dunkleosteus, please?
Dunkleosteus for life

Tany is much smaller than I thought they were. Only around the size of a modern day reptile? Wow, that is so much smaller. I always thought Tany was around the size of sauropods. You learn something new everyday.
