    So I'm a mechanical design student and I've been playing around with flow sim for my own muzzle brake design but have been having some trouble getting it to do what I want. Could you link us to one of those pressure charts? Also, did you run this as an external or internal sim and could you do a video going more in depth on the flow set up process specifically for rapid pressure release applications like this?

    • @MLCCADSystems
      @MLCCADSystems  4 года назад +9

      If you search for "Chamber Pressure Chart" you can find several sources where the pressures in the firearm chamber are measured over time, often these charts are categorized by caliber and can be impacted by several factors so they are only valid as representative data. These pressures are measured for different purposes such as chamber design and ballistic analysis, but they are useful for understanding the conditions of the inputs for a scenario like this. You can do this as an external analysis or as an internal analysis with a box representing the environment, where static pressures are applied to the inside of that box.
      For a rapid pressure release application, the most important things to review are the Calculation Control Options, specifically the time step, which should be manually set to be small enough to fully discretize the input curves.

      @@MLCCADSystemsThe files are already shared by you (look below, there is a dropbox link where I downloaded the project). That is the point: the video is about design and simulation of a suprresor, and without clear explanations of some settings you used, there are doubts about the simulation being really properly set up, it is just a constructive critic: the better someones explains, the less doubts exists about how good the teacher is right?

      This tutorial covers the workflow and explores the application but explicitly is not represented as an accurate result at all. No external validation is presented, serious simplifications are made that undermine the accuracy, and the geometry is completely arbitrary. Consider this tutorial as only how you would begin a journey of Simulation.

    Great job, how did you do to generate the simulation, making the projectile move during the simulation? can you help me?

    • @MLCCADSystems
      @MLCCADSystems  4 года назад +2

      It is not possible to insert a moving solid object into the mesh in Flow Simulation, with the only exception being rotating regions. In this case, I am simulating the firing of a "blank" which includes propellant but no projectile.

    Why is the cut plot moving instead of the simulation itself moving?

    • @MLCCADSystems
      @MLCCADSystems  2 года назад +1

      The cut plot is defined as a section view of the results, and if you look at it over a transient time range the cut plot will stay still but the fluid flow results will change. If you have a steady-state study and animate that same cut plot it will animate the motion of the cut plane through the study domain. This might be helpful, a workflow to create transient animations in Flow: www.mlc-cad.com/solidworks-flow-simulation-transient-animations/

    • @MLCCADSystems
      @MLCCADSystems  4 года назад +2

      Unfortunately Flow Simulation can't analyze a moving mesh like this, one where the shape of the flow region changes with the position of the bullet. It would make for a better video but the focus in this case was on analysis and pushing the potential of the software to study a very dynamic process.

    how long did your simulation take to run?

    • @MLCCADSystems
      @MLCCADSystems  3 года назад

      We seem to have lost the result files for this, but if I recall correctly it took one or two days to complete at full mesh resolution because it is transient and has such a sudden burst that the shock front took a while to converge at each time step. Modifying the time step, the mesh resolution, the domain size, and other parameters will have a big impact on the solve time. I've seen solve times range from 15 seconds for small valves up to 2 weeks for a transient solution of an entire aircraft going transitioning to supersonic flight.

      I recommend reaching out to your local university or community college to see if they have a course, there are several in your area teaching SOLIDWORKS but whether they would transfer to your institution of choice is not clear. Good luck!
