Good video, Josh. I have a 25 hp 4WD compact that we bought new with a mid mount mower, loader, and R4 tires. I have been using it for 16 years. It mows great, pulls well, and I have steep hills where I cut trees, buck them into rounds for firewood, and haul them back down off of the hill. By the way, I also use the bucket to haul water to our garden when the creek is really dry and the bucket is also good for shoveling snow from our driveway. It can also serve as a second helper as it did for me when I had a small outbuilding falling over. I put the bucket against it, pushed it to plumb, then fixed the foundation. The only mistake that I made was in not getting the backhoe.
I was only looking at getting around a 30 horsepower tractor but my dad talked to the guys that did some grading work on the property and they told him anything less than a 50 horsepower would be a waste of time, money and just get on our nerves so we went looking and ended up buying a Yanmar YT359 which is around 59 HP and we have no regrets of buying it. It has been great and has done everything we needed it to do. We have Bushhogged several times already, we've used disc hars, turning plows. And I myself have dug up several stumps with it and it's been great..it has almost 83hrs on it now and we bought it new.
100 years ago, tractors were all about pulling things with a drawbar and powering other equipment via pulleys and eventually shafts. Now they pull, push, lift, carry, and power other things largely with hydraulics. Hydraulic remotes and flow capacity are now more important than engine horsepower.
Good info Josh. I did my homework and eventually went with the Kubota L2501. Got the front loader, Backhoe, Box blade, 60" tiller and 60" bushhog with it so far. For ballast weight, I had all 4 tires filled with foam. That made a tremendous difference. The tractor weighs almost another 1000#s after the foam, but it also cost me a fortune to get it done. But I do agree that a more modern diesel 4x4 tractor with the front loader is the best start a new land owner or farmer can do. Just about the only thing I don't use my kubota for is finish mowing. That's reserved for a zero turn mower. A tip for all you guys out there, a nice zero turn mower will enable the wife to want to cut the grass....
People normally put foam in tractor tires so they won't get flats. That usually makes those tires really hard like concrete. A lot of people just add wheel weights to the tractor or fill the tires with water or some nonfreezing liquid. I have never heard of foam adding very much weight to the tractor. They normally do that to tractors on job sites with lots of tire hazards.
Zero turn mower is a huge waste of money if you already have a tractor with a mower on it. Besides, who wants to drive a mower that takes both hands to steer it. You couldn't pay me enough to drive one of those ridiculous things! Give me a tractor with a mower any day of the year! Bush hog or belly mower, or anything that has cruise control and one hand steering! Steering wheel or joystick. 🙄 Seriously though those zero turn mowers should come with one hand joystick steering. That's just idiotic the way they have those designed. You would have to stop to brush the hair out of your eyes or wipe the sweat off your face or wave at your neighbor or scratch yourself or take a drink or any one of a thousand different reasons not to use two hands to steer with. I have seen their ads and I have told them how stupid they are for not using one hand joystick steering. A lot of commercial and industrial machines are going to one hand joystick steering now. It's a lot safer to! It's more natural. A lot shorter learning curve, etc!
I bought a Mahindra Max 24 in 2015 with FEL and Tiller , 4wd, hydrostatic , 3cyl diesel mitsubishi (sp) , It does everything I need on my small place and has never failed me , great little tractor
Here in ireland both tractors would be yard tractors for in and out of sheds the 240 would be a common tractor here u can get cabs and mx loaders for the 240

Josh, I live in the mountains of North Central Pa. A couple of years ago I bought a used 2007 John Deere 2305 with 400 hours on it. It was in very nice condition. This tractor is a beast. It came with a backhoe, mid mount mower, and front end loader. I only wish that I had something like this 30 years ago. 👍👍👍 Happy New Year and keep making the great videos. I'm 71 years old and I learn something new every time I watch one.
With tha "SE" addition its a "Cadillac ". Plus you gots the "Amplifying bucket-linkage assembly's " ,if it has the loader. Just DON'T like the "behind the seat fuel tank", or the " on the light side " rear-axle-trans. Your rig is a good one. How many hours?
Best advice I ever got, tractor wise, was get more than you think you need. 4wd & loader are non negotiable, outside of that, get as large as you can afford. You won’t regret it.
Well....I'd say to an extent that's good advice. I wouldn't wanna drive around that 110 hp TYM 1104 in the pastures much if I can help it....a little machine like this is perfect for those small jobs for sure!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer oh ,without a doubt! I was considering a compact, and ending up going with an older 50hp. Happy I did, still small enough to get things done, but big enough that it doesn’t struggle with much of anything, and you still have the option to pull some hay equipment if you decide to go that route.

My Dad has a Kubota BX25d with the backhoe and front end loader. He’s put about 1700 hours on it since he bought it new. I grew up running my Grandpa’s old Ferguson TO-20 and Ford 8N on his 197 acre farm. While those will ALWAYS be the classic farm tractor to me, that 4 wheel drive Kubota can hold its own against those old irons. Still doesn’t stop me from wanting one for old times sake.

Our tractors were shot a few years back just absolutely worn out. I purchased a John Deere 4044m and have been completely satisfied. It does 90% of the work. I’m on the market for a older high horsepower tractor now. I’ll purchase it to satisfy a couple needs and a major want. Going to use it to grind feed in the winter and bush hog some in the summer. While I’m buying I’ll get one in the similar condition as your massey’s cause I love older tractors in great condition and I’d rather collect a tractor than a car any day.

I have a 40hp (33hp turbo charged) Massey 1540 4 wheel drive compact with a Massey front end loader for my 10acres. I bought it brand new in 2007 and have been pretty happy with it. It has had a couple of issues. It used to slip out of gear while I was mowing or using the PTO and the mechanic found a gear was installed backwards at the factory and was not engaging properly so that only the edge of the gear was engaging. That edge of the gear wore out and would no longer engage. Cost me about $1500 to replace. Other than that it has been a solid tractor.

Hugh? Our Massey has a cable like a lawnmower that is kinda like cruse control. Sure you have to get it going but once you're off its all good! Still going to get a new one like you said 😁
I have a Mahindra 4110, which is a TYM built with a 41 HP Daedong engine. The 4110 was one of the bigger compacts on the market when I bought this tractor new in 2005. I think TYM still builds larger CUTs (Compact Utility Tractors) for Mahindra. TYM also builds tractors for Branson and the Rural King RK tractors. TYM uses a wide range of tractor engines built by major manufacturers. After 16 years and over 1500 hours my tractor has handled everything that has been thrown its way. 4WD and loaders make tractors much more capable, and allow them to handle rougher terrain. The biggest issue most owners have with tractors is they almost always wish they had gotten one that is one size bigger. I don’t know of anyone that wishes they had gotten a tractor one size smaller.
I've got ford 3000 and 3910II, and a JCB 1400B; old school but manage with the attachments. If anything I'd put a front loader on the 3000 and get a smaller digger bucket on the jcb. OVERALL, I've been blessed! Correct, a new homesteader who can afford a compact would be the choice for a small amount of acreage. Buy only if needed... use your change where it does the best.
Howdy all! I’d like to chime in on the apples to oranges comparison. They really are different machines, designed and built for different purposes, which makes them hard to compare without a lot of context. That said, this kind of choice is exactly what people are faced with - older/bigger/cheaper/less functional vs newer/smaller/multi-functional/pricier. So this comparison will probably inform some first-time tractor buyers. In 2017, when I started to actively maintain our farm in the western Ozarks, I found a 1968 Ford 3000 with a loader and cutter that I could afford. I bought a 3-point blade for it and it does what I need. It’s 33 hp gas, 2WD. If the logging makes it possible, I might upgrade to something similar but new enough to have 4WD, live PTO, and a quick- connect front with a third function control so I could get a grapple. I’m good with gear drive. So my decisions are driven by something touched on by some of the commenters and by Josh. What is the experience base of the operator, what are the needs of the situation, what is the funding? Answer all those questions and the decisions narrow down to be more tractable. (Pun not intended but I’m glad it happened). And all things change. Now that I’ve had a bucket on a tractor for the first time, I don’t know how Dad and I did without one back in the day. And now I find myself needing grapple functionality all the time for brushpile work. If I can’t upgrade the tractor, I may look to add a third function control and a thumb. Lots of choices ahead. You only compare the TYM 25hp versus M-F 46hp. What would be the reasoning and rationale for the larger TYM tractor? And what about the upgrades you made to you ATV ? Why would you get a bucket and a grader on the ATV when you could instead use the 25hp tractor instead ? Also how does the drag-behind mower on the M-F compare to the flail mower on the big TYM ? You've mentioned that you are getting rid of your father's bat-wing mower/bushhog, but I would love to hear a comparison of all 3: why would you use one over the other for what type of brush cutting or mowing ? In a previous video you also discussed clearing some brush to open up a path or more pasture; what brush cutter did you use then, and why choose it over the others ?

If I was looking for a starter tractor I would choose Little-T. It may have a smaller mowing deck but its capabilities of handling other jobs around a farm out way the mowing deck size. 🚜-Woooo!!
Yup..food for thought..TYM is perfect size for what I do on 15acres…and there’s no better than yanmar for small diesel…having a garden tiller is amazing
Where does the VenTrac and all of it’s possible attachments fit into this comparison? It seems between the T254 and the Massey Ferguson, they cover most of the uses of a VenTrac.
Ventrac is a great property management machine for sure...as for the utility of the Ventrac v/s a subcompact tractor...they're just two different kinds of machines. The ventrac isn't gonna pull a hay wagon, or push a fallen tree out of the field...but it will grind stumps, till the garden and mow like nobody's business. Ventrac isn't apples to apples comparison on these machines
Great review Josh. My little farm is 13 acres and I bought a J.d.3025e with a front end loader. Perfect little 4x4 wheel Barrow with power steering to boot. Life don't get no better than that. Great fot mucking out barns or carrying just about anything.
I get the point of the video but I’m gonna bet that massy would drag that little tym all over that yard lol. You can’t beat them old tractors as far as reliable though! I wish I could have got my grandpas old massy it had a loader on it. Only thing I wish I would have done different was pay the extra for the cab! In south Mississippi it gets hot and dusty and critters/bugs!
TYM T264 is excellent, one year with mine. It is a discontinued model replaced by almost identical T25. I added LED light bar to ROP, golf cart mirrors, toothbar, beetle juice (Rimguard) in all tires. Without implement on rear I can haul in 7x12 dump trailer. Put on Bush hog, backhoe, tiller etc. and I haul on the 16' flatbed. Tractor is excellent size for backhoe/landscaping as I can transport easily and get into smaller yards. The Kukje diesel is a Cummins design and is considered my many to be the best diesel engine.
What do you think about Sears Suburban Garden Tractor's we have a front loader a rear tiller a mowing deck she does anything we need to we have had one for years since we lived in Tennessee on the farm
My two issues holding me back from subcompact is lift power to cost. Being a mechanic, the older Case 500 backhoe rigs can be had anywhere from 2k-8k. The con would be largeness for woodlands use, at 10k/lbs full size. So I find myself in a dilema! I would love subcompact but theyre about double the price of an old brute, my 7 acres doesnt need a brute besides moving some of the many boulders and moving log rounds. I realize my ATV with log arch could likely do any sawmill log moving, along with a big cable system when the ATV cant handle the terrain. I feel like mid compact would be ideal, but with a 5k budget its hard to find anything other than the older larger units. To me, half price is just better, but largeness may limit future needs. Then, a 10k/lb tractor is not transportable without paying someone to move it.
$5k budget just isn't enough to buy a nice subcompact yard tractor like this.....up that budget and get yourself a little yard/chore tractor, you won't regret it
My experience is that gear driven tractors excel at pulling implements like plows, seeders, bines, mowers, etc... over acreage. They SUCK for technical driving like you're gonna be doing with anything front mount or mowing areas that require a lot of direction changing. Hydro tractors are quicker and more nimble but at a cost - they cost more (maintenance costs, up front costs, etc) and aren't as long-term bomb proof. Hydro tranny tractors are best for under 40hp and loader work or mowing where you arent running in a straight line. As far as HP, tire size, weight... that all depends on what implements u need to run and how fast you want to get it done. I have a JD 855 which is a 20ish HP glorified garden tractor. It has turf tires on it and a bucket. For mowing with the belly mower it's OK. For moving a small bit of dirt it does an OK job. Easier than a wheelbarrow for sure. The lack of weight and small size to this tractor makes it terrible for many "around the farm" type things like maintaining roads, or working in the woods. It's just too lightweight. I used to have a Ferguson TO-20 which had about the same HP, but it was much more useful for everything except mowing the lawn. Even with the fact is only had 2 wheel drive vs the 855's 4wd. There's nothing wrong with "old school technology", and learning the various levers on an older tractor doesn't take that long. I guess it really boils down to your intended usage model. What do you intend to use the tractor for? For a "one tractor farm", I would suggest at least a 35-40 HP tractor with a bucket that is easily removed. Anything less and you'll soon be looking for that second tractor.
@@lakepinesfarm1394 Yes, the 855 is good for cutting the grass as it has a 60inch belly mower. I also use it to push snow in the winter. It's a good little tractor, I didn't mean to imply it was not. It's just not that great in the woods or grading my road and such. Which is why I said, it's really about what you want the tractor for. Mowing and light bucket work? A small tractor like the 855 or the TYM shone in this video is perfect. Getting firewood, grading roads, or pulling equipment requires more weight, longer wheelbase and more traction.
For a farmer's wife learning to operate a tractor, hydrostatic might be the best choice. However, if her dad taught her to drive stick shift, it probably wouldn't make any difference as she can probably drive nearly any vehicle, regardless of transmission type.
I'll take you up on that! O couldn't ride a dirt bike, but a three wheeler and 3 years stick shift in my youth. Hubs brought home a sub compact this week and has so many attachments I'm not sure where to begin!
TYM has been in business for many years and builds real tractors in use all around the world. China builds tractors that are in real junkyards around the world.
Which tractor would u recommend to pull a 60" working width no till drill and a 6ft Goliath crimper? Or would either/neither work? Do u recommend a stronger tractor to pull something like that?
It all depends on what you are doing. I have a smaller compact tractor with loader, about the size of your 254. I have a smaller farm, but when I was working hay fields growing up we had something like your MF. The MF was to pick up small hay bails and load them onto a trailer then I would stack them on the trailer. I loved it, because before that I would rotate with a few different guys picking up the bails and throwing them up onto the trailer. They both have a purpose, but if I had to make a choice, I'd never give up my compact.
I think the massey and this style tractor makes a great second machine...but a primary machine on your property needs to have a loader for sure. The TYM gets driven almost daily..the massey sits in the shed until time to mow.
Sorry, I am two years late to the party. I do have one question about the acreage. When you say you can manage up to 30 acres or so, if I had say 40 acres of grazing pasture plus 15 acres of hay, would that also be fine for the smaller tractor when the animals are largely doing the mowing for me on the pasture, or would you consider that 55 acres and time to upgrade? Real good video Josh!! On our little farm we have a JD 2555, a Ford 5000 and a White 2-85. But I use my JD 2038R for all of the property maintenance as well as moving and feeding round bales. The smaller tractor is just a lot more handy and easier to get around.
To be quite honest, I'd be willing to take either of those tractors off your hands. My tractor is old and tired, it's a 2-8-9N frankentractor. But it still runs.
What in the world are you talkin about saying the Massey Ferguson won't do what the other tractor will do. I grew up on a Massey Ferguson gear shift transmission since I was about 10. That did not even have a shuttle shift. It was a 3 X 2 straight out of the transmission. No flimsy crappy shift linkage on it like my New Holland had! That tractor turned out to be garbage and I got rid it! But I did like the shuttle shift feature on it. Just like the giant payloaders I drove every day at work. That Massey Ferguson sounds like it was underpowered for its size! And every farm type tractor should have a loader on it! My New Holland had 33 horsepower which was plenty for that size tractor, and running a tiller. I love that Massey Ferguson for all the features as far as many levers, buttons, and switches cuz it gives you lots of options for lots of different situations! Four-wheel drive is also another must on almost any farm tractor! I absolutely love a shuttle shift gear transmission!!! They can do any job extremely well!!! I do not like hydrostatic rubber tire tractors! Hydrostatic dozers and skid steers I do like! I'm a Hands-On person, not foot controls! That's why I can't stand the old Bobcat skid steers! My dad had a John Deere 400 that was okay as a hydrostatic lawn mower/snow blower but that's about it, and it kept having engine trouble. I decided I don't like Kohler engines!!! They can keep making faucets! That John Deere 400 only had two pedals, brake pedals! And a throttle lever and travel ever. If you planned on using that Ferguson just for mowing then you should have picked up an old Ford 8N. Or even a golden jubilee. Very few controls and they last forever. Just make sure you have the pto adapter for the over-running clutch. 😉
Am really looking for a tractor to buy but not sure like Ik John Deere is good but not a fan of the brand , was thinking new holland but don’t wanna pay more for a tractor n get something that’s smaller or not worth the money
Id Love a sub compact tractor like the TYM, but i cant justify the price when i can buy like an older Massey (35 to 240) and then attach a loader to it. Sure it aint as "rookie proof" and a Hydro static and more modern controlls for the loader but with tinkering(and i like it) around a bit i can somewhat upgrade the older ones controlls a bit. It would cost ya just as much to have a 35 year old massey like this and buy an old 35 year old loader ....Welcome to the channel....when it comes to tractors...I want to get on and work..not wrench on them all the time..nothing more frustrating than having hay on the ground and parts on order
I'm a little bias on that being that I grew up around masseys early 60s was the 35x then the 70s a 135 in the mid 80s I was on my own away from the family farm I got me a 255 as acreage increased went with a 290. Now I'm thinking something like a 699 I know it's old school but I'm kinda getting up there myself the little tym is pretty handy too but I'd have to think about it if I had one to play with I'd be convinced maybe
Anybody that's ever tried that little 254 on my place has asked me how much one costs and told me that's the perfect little tractor....it's more of a "chore tractor" that anyone can drive

For 30 acres homesteading, both those tractors suck. I have a JD 2032R and it is not enough on our 10 acre homestead. It can barely lift what I need into the back of the truck, BARELY. No reason to push it. Also, the JD2032R can BARELY break up the sod when I plunge the bucket into the ground. Super hard to build a road, dig up undisturbed soil, etc with it. For light work on 10 acres, go with a compact in the 20-40 HP range. For real work, go with a JD 5075 or similar. Don't mess around. The extra $20k will pay you back in spades.
honestly my suggestion to anyone now is to buy a nice used skid steer and then a small tractor for mowing. You'd never regret it! The skid steer on my place gets 5 times the work done than a little yard tractor

Funny how the tractor salesmen tell you that you need more than a subcompact to do 6 acres. I guess it depends on the implements. No TYM dealers in my area. I was mainly looking at kubota lx series, and I’m definitely a rookie who is starting from scratch.
Dude....don't even get me started on the pile of useless information we got when we started shopping for our first tractor...from dealers talking about paint colors to choosing geared v/s hydrostatic...not very many knowledgeable salespeople out there as it pertains to tractors.....basically they just ask "how much you wanna spend"

It's a lot safer to! It's more natural. A lot shorter learning curve, etc!
I bought a Mahindra Max 24 in 2015 with FEL and Tiller , 4wd, hydrostatic , 3cyl diesel mitsubishi (sp) , It does everything I need on my small place and has never failed me , great little tractor
Here in ireland both tractors would be yard tractors for in and out of sheds the 240 would be a common tractor here u can get cabs and mx loaders for the 240

Josh, I live in the mountains of North Central Pa. A couple of years ago I bought a used 2007 John Deere 2305 with 400 hours on it. It was in very nice condition. This tractor is a beast. It came with a backhoe, mid mount mower, and front end loader. I only wish that I had something like this 30 years ago. 👍👍👍 Happy New Year and keep making the great videos. I'm 71 years old and I learn something new every time I watch one.
I bought a Branson 25hp tractor that weighs 4000 lb and can lift 2200 lb with loader for under 18 grand. Good video.

With tha "SE" addition its a "Cadillac ". Plus you gots the "Amplifying bucket-linkage assembly's " ,if it has the loader. Just DON'T like the "behind the seat fuel tank", or the " on the light side " rear-axle-trans. Your rig is a good one. How many hours?
Best advice I ever got, tractor wise, was get more than you think you need. 4wd & loader are non negotiable, outside of that, get as large as you can afford. You won’t regret it.
Well....I'd say to an extent that's good advice. I wouldn't wanna drive around that 110 hp TYM 1104 in the pastures much if I can help it....a little machine like this is perfect for those small jobs for sure!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer oh ,without a doubt! I was considering a compact, and ending up going with an older 50hp. Happy I did, still small enough to get things done, but big enough that it doesn’t struggle with much of anything, and you still have the option to pull some hay equipment if you decide to go that route.

My Dad has a Kubota BX25d with the backhoe and front end loader. He’s put about 1700 hours on it since he bought it new. I grew up running my Grandpa’s old Ferguson TO-20 and Ford 8N on his 197 acre farm. While those will ALWAYS be the classic farm tractor to me, that 4 wheel drive Kubota can hold its own against those old irons. Still doesn’t stop me from wanting one for old times sake.

Our tractors were shot a few years back just absolutely worn out. I purchased a John Deere 4044m and have been completely satisfied. It does 90% of the work. I’m on the market for a older high horsepower tractor now. I’ll purchase it to satisfy a couple needs and a major want. Going to use it to grind feed in the winter and bush hog some in the summer. While I’m buying I’ll get one in the similar condition as your massey’s cause I love older tractors in great condition and I’d rather collect a tractor than a car any day.

I have a 40hp (33hp turbo charged) Massey 1540 4 wheel drive compact with a Massey front end loader for my 10acres. I bought it brand new in 2007 and have been pretty happy with it. It has had a couple of issues. It used to slip out of gear while I was mowing or using the PTO and the mechanic found a gear was installed backwards at the factory and was not engaging properly so that only the edge of the gear was engaging. That edge of the gear wore out and would no longer engage. Cost me about $1500 to replace. Other than that it has been a solid tractor.

Hugh? Our Massey has a cable like a lawnmower that is kinda like cruse control. Sure you have to get it going but once you're off its all good! Still going to get a new one like you said 😁
I have a Mahindra 4110, which is a TYM built with a 41 HP Daedong engine. The 4110 was one of the bigger compacts on the market when I bought this tractor new in 2005. I think TYM still builds larger CUTs (Compact Utility Tractors) for Mahindra. TYM also builds tractors for Branson and the Rural King RK tractors. TYM uses a wide range of tractor engines built by major manufacturers. After 16 years and over 1500 hours my tractor has handled everything that has been thrown its way. 4WD and loaders make tractors much more capable, and allow them to handle rougher terrain. The biggest issue most owners have with tractors is they almost always wish they had gotten one that is one size bigger. I don’t know of anyone that wishes they had gotten a tractor one size smaller.
We bought a Kubota MX5200 with a 4 in 1 loader. We bought it as there were no others for sale.
I've got ford 3000 and 3910II, and a JCB 1400B; old school but manage with the attachments.
If anything I'd put a front loader on the 3000 and get a smaller digger bucket on the jcb.
OVERALL, I've been blessed!
Correct, a new homesteader who can afford a compact would be the choice for a small amount of acreage.
Buy only if needed... use your change where it does the best.

Howdy all! I’d like to chime in on the apples to oranges comparison. They really are different machines, designed and built for different purposes, which makes them hard to compare without a lot of context. That said, this kind of choice is exactly what people are faced with - older/bigger/cheaper/less functional vs newer/smaller/multi-functional/pricier. So this comparison will probably inform some first-time tractor buyers. In 2017, when I started to actively maintain our farm in the western Ozarks, I found a 1968 Ford 3000 with a loader and cutter that I could afford. I bought a 3-point blade for it and it does what I need. It’s 33 hp gas, 2WD. If the logging makes it possible, I might upgrade to something similar but new enough to have 4WD, live PTO, and a quick- connect front with a third function control so I could get a grapple. I’m good with gear drive. So my decisions are driven by something touched on by some of the commenters and by Josh. What is the experience base of the operator, what are the needs of the situation, what is the funding? Answer all those questions and the decisions narrow down to be more tractable. (Pun not intended but I’m glad it happened). And all things change. Now that I’ve had a bucket on a tractor for the first time, I don’t know how Dad and I did without one back in the day. And now I find myself needing grapple functionality all the time for brushpile work. If I can’t upgrade the tractor, I may look to add a third function control and a thumb. Lots of choices ahead.

You only compare the TYM 25hp versus M-F 46hp. What would be the reasoning and rationale for the larger TYM tractor? And what about the upgrades you made to you ATV ? Why would you get a bucket and a grader on the ATV when you could instead use the 25hp tractor instead ?
Also how does the drag-behind mower on the M-F compare to the flail mower on the big TYM ? You've mentioned that you are getting rid of your father's bat-wing mower/bushhog, but I would love to hear a comparison of all 3: why would you use one over the other for what type of brush cutting or mowing ? In a previous video you also discussed clearing some brush to open up a path or more pasture; what brush cutter did you use then, and why choose it over the others ?
I just got a ventrac josh, I would of loved to see it in the mix with these 2 big guys. For the smaller guys the ventrac is the move!

If I was looking for a starter tractor I would choose Little-T. It may have a smaller mowing deck but its capabilities of handling other jobs around a farm out way the mowing deck size. 🚜-Woooo!!
my Ford 2000 did just fine until we got hit by a tornado and started doing real farming. now my Kubota L4701 is my workhorse.
Yup..food for thought..TYM is perfect size for what I do on 15acres…and there’s no better than yanmar for small diesel…having a garden tiller is amazing
Where does the VenTrac and all of it’s possible attachments fit into this comparison? It seems between the T254 and the Massey Ferguson, they cover most of the uses of a VenTrac.
Ventrac is a great property management machine for sure...as for the utility of the Ventrac v/s a subcompact tractor...they're just two different kinds of machines. The ventrac isn't gonna pull a hay wagon, or push a fallen tree out of the field...but it will grind stumps, till the garden and mow like nobody's business. Ventrac isn't apples to apples comparison on these machines
Great review Josh. My little farm is 13 acres and I bought a J.d.3025e with a front end loader. Perfect little 4x4 wheel Barrow with power steering to boot. Life don't get no better than that. Great fot mucking out barns or carrying just about anything.

I get the point of the video but I’m gonna bet that massy would drag that little tym all over that yard lol. You can’t beat them old tractors as far as reliable though! I wish I could have got my grandpas old massy it had a loader on it. Only thing I wish I would have done different was pay the extra for the cab! In south Mississippi it gets hot and dusty and critters/bugs!

Just looked at a TYM 264 HST at Reedy Creek Equipment in Lexington yesterday. Closest dealer to us! Love the content
TYM T264 is excellent, one year with mine. It is a discontinued model replaced by almost identical T25. I added LED light bar to ROP, golf cart mirrors, toothbar, beetle juice (Rimguard) in all tires. Without implement on rear I can haul in 7x12 dump trailer. Put on Bush hog, backhoe, tiller etc. and I haul on the 16' flatbed. Tractor is excellent size for backhoe/landscaping as I can transport easily and get into smaller yards. The Kukje diesel is a Cummins design and is considered my many to be the best diesel engine.
What do you think about Sears Suburban Garden Tractor's we have a front loader a rear tiller a mowing deck she does anything we need to we have had one for years since we lived in Tennessee on the farm

My two issues holding me back from subcompact is lift power to cost.
Being a mechanic, the older Case 500 backhoe rigs can be had anywhere from 2k-8k.
The con would be largeness for woodlands use, at 10k/lbs full size.
So I find myself in a dilema! I would love subcompact but theyre about double the price of an old brute, my 7 acres doesnt need a brute besides moving some of the many boulders and moving log rounds.
I realize my ATV with log arch could likely do any sawmill log moving, along with a big cable system when the ATV cant handle the terrain.
I feel like mid compact would be ideal, but with a 5k budget its hard to find anything other than the older larger units. To me, half price is just better, but largeness may limit future needs. Then, a 10k/lb tractor is not transportable without paying someone to move it.
$5k budget just isn't enough to buy a nice subcompact yard tractor like this.....up that budget and get yourself a little yard/chore tractor, you won't regret it
My experience is that gear driven tractors excel at pulling implements like plows, seeders, bines, mowers, etc... over acreage. They SUCK for technical driving like you're gonna be doing with anything front mount or mowing areas that require a lot of direction changing. Hydro tractors are quicker and more nimble but at a cost - they cost more (maintenance costs, up front costs, etc) and aren't as long-term bomb proof. Hydro tranny tractors are best for under 40hp and loader work or mowing where you arent running in a straight line. As far as HP, tire size, weight... that all depends on what implements u need to run and how fast you want to get it done. I have a JD 855 which is a 20ish HP glorified garden tractor. It has turf tires on it and a bucket. For mowing with the belly mower it's OK. For moving a small bit of dirt it does an OK job. Easier than a wheelbarrow for sure. The lack of weight and small size to this tractor makes it terrible for many "around the farm" type things like maintaining roads, or working in the woods. It's just too lightweight. I used to have a Ferguson TO-20 which had about the same HP, but it was much more useful for everything except mowing the lawn. Even with the fact is only had 2 wheel drive vs the 855's 4wd. There's nothing wrong with "old school technology", and learning the various levers on an older tractor doesn't take that long. I guess it really boils down to your intended usage model. What do you intend to use the tractor for? For a "one tractor farm", I would suggest at least a 35-40 HP tractor with a bucket that is easily removed. Anything less and you'll soon be looking for that second tractor.
@@lakepinesfarm1394 Yes, the 855 is good for cutting the grass as it has a 60inch belly mower. I also use it to push snow in the winter. It's a good little tractor, I didn't mean to imply it was not. It's just not that great in the woods or grading my road and such. Which is why I said, it's really about what you want the tractor for. Mowing and light bucket work? A small tractor like the 855 or the TYM shone in this video is perfect. Getting firewood, grading roads, or pulling equipment requires more weight, longer wheelbase and more traction.

For a farmer's wife learning to operate a tractor, hydrostatic might be the best choice. However, if her dad taught her to drive stick shift, it probably wouldn't make any difference as she can probably drive nearly any vehicle, regardless of transmission type.
I'll take you up on that! O couldn't ride a dirt bike, but a three wheeler and 3 years stick shift in my youth. Hubs brought home a sub compact this week and has so many attachments I'm not sure where to begin!

Put a loader on the Massey and you're still under $10,000 .....
you would be surprised what they can do, but thair lift is limited ( beats a human doing it by 2x ) and parts and last-a- bilaty is yet to be prooven.
TYM has been in business for many years and builds real tractors in use all around the world. China builds tractors that are in real junkyards around the world.

What do I need to look for in a tractor, I don't know farm equipment lingo, to attach a mower, post hole digger, back hoe, etc?
It all depends on what you are doing. I have a smaller compact tractor with loader, about the size of your 254. I have a smaller farm, but when I was working hay fields growing up we had something like your MF. The MF was to pick up small hay bails and load them onto a trailer then I would stack them on the trailer. I loved it, because before that I would rotate with a few different guys picking up the bails and throwing them up onto the trailer. They both have a purpose, but if I had to make a choice, I'd never give up my compact.
I think the massey and this style tractor makes a great second machine...but a primary machine on your property needs to have a loader for sure. The TYM gets driven almost daily..the massey sits in the shed until time to mow.

Sorry, I am two years late to the party. I do have one question about the acreage. When you say you can manage up to 30 acres or so, if I had say 40 acres of grazing pasture plus 15 acres of hay, would that also be fine for the smaller tractor when the animals are largely doing the mowing for me on the pasture, or would you consider that 55 acres and time to upgrade?

if you have 55 acres of pasture, you need a 55-85hp machine unless you never clip pastures. The tym t574 is what I'd look into

On our little farm we have a JD 2555, a Ford 5000 and a White 2-85. But I use my JD 2038R for all of the property maintenance as well as moving and feeding round bales. The smaller tractor is just a lot more handy and easier to get around.

To be quite honest, I'd be willing to take either of those tractors off your hands. My tractor is old and tired, it's a 2-8-9N frankentractor. But it still runs.

What in the world are you talkin about saying the Massey Ferguson won't do what the other tractor will do.
I grew up on a Massey Ferguson gear shift transmission since I was about 10. That did not even have a shuttle shift.
It was a 3 X 2 straight out of the transmission. No flimsy crappy shift linkage on it like my New Holland had! That tractor turned out to be garbage and I got rid it! But I did like the shuttle shift feature on it.
Just like the giant payloaders I drove every day at work.
That Massey Ferguson sounds like it was underpowered for its size!
And every farm type tractor should have a loader on it!
My New Holland had 33 horsepower which was plenty for that size tractor, and running a tiller.
I love that Massey Ferguson for all the features as far as many levers, buttons, and switches cuz it gives you lots of options for lots of different situations!
Four-wheel drive is also another must on almost any farm tractor!
I absolutely love a shuttle shift gear transmission!!!

My dad had a John Deere 400 that was okay as a hydrostatic lawn mower/snow blower but that's about it, and it kept having engine trouble.
I decided I don't like Kohler engines!!!
They can keep making faucets!
That John Deere 400 only had two pedals, brake pedals!
And a throttle lever and travel ever.
If you planned on using that Ferguson just for mowing then you should have picked up an old Ford 8N. Or even a golden jubilee. Very few controls and they last forever.
Just make sure you have the pto adapter for the over-running clutch. 😉

Id Love a sub compact tractor like the TYM, but i cant justify the price when i can buy like an older Massey (35 to 240) and then attach a loader to it. Sure it aint as "rookie proof" and a Hydro static and more modern controlls for the loader but with tinkering(and i like it) around a bit i can somewhat upgrade the older ones controlls a bit. I'm a little bias on that being that I grew up around masseys early 60s was the 35x then the 70s a 135 in the mid 80s I was on my own away from the family farm I got me a 255 as acreage increased went with a 290. Now I'm thinking something like a 699 I know it's old school but I'm kinda getting up there myself the little tym is pretty handy too but I'd have to think about it if I had one to play with I'd be convinced maybe
Anybody that's ever tried that little 254 on my place has asked me how much one costs and told me that's the perfect little tractor....it's more of a "chore tractor" that anyone can drive

I vote for the Ventrac for a small property.Just rent a backhoe when you occasionally / rarely need one.
The ventrac will mow & rough cut on steep areas more safely than either one of these. for hay a big tractor is better.
Hello from Minnesota Josh. My jonh deere 1070 gets it done for me.
For 30 acres homesteading, both those tractors suck. I have a JD 2032R and it is not enough on our 10 acre homestead. It can barely lift what I need into the back of the truck, BARELY. No reason to push it. Also, the JD2032R can BARELY break up the sod when I plunge the bucket into the ground. Super hard to build a road, dig up undisturbed soil, etc with it. For light work on 10 acres, go with a compact in the 20-40 HP range. For real work, go with a JD 5075 or similar. Don't mess around. The extra $20k will pay you back in spades.
honestly my suggestion to anyone now is to buy a nice used skid steer and then a small tractor for mowing. You'd never regret it! The skid steer on my place gets 5 times the work done than a little yard tractor

Funny how the tractor salesmen tell you that you need more than a subcompact to do 6 acres. I guess it depends on the implements. No TYM dealers in my area. I was mainly looking at kubota lx series, and I’m definitely a rookie who is starting from scratch.
Dude....don't even get me started on the pile of useless information we got when we started shopping for our first tractor...from dealers talking about paint colors to choosing geared v/s hydrostatic...not very many knowledgeable salespeople out there as it pertains to tractors.....basically they just ask "how much you wanna spend"
