I just shared my views on your previous video on same topic... I would like to make videos about various things on my single channel only... I feel a lot like how u described urself on RUclips... My personality is my niche...
Please guide me... I sometimes start feeling very sad when my videos don't get good views... I can observe that even ur videos have very less views... If I compare ur views with no. of subscribers, mathematically ur this video got only 1℅ of views of ur total subscribers in 1 week.. I feel that too is very low.....
I think the same happens with me... I have 400 subscribers at present, and I feel that only 1℅ of them actually watch any of my video seriously... But isn't this percent too low?

One tactic you could try is seeing which videos seem to be performing better than others, and doing more of that kind of content. You could also try making different style of thumbnails, something simple and eye catching with a clean design that sticks out. The simpler the better! Not every video will perform the same. I also find that many of my older videos which didn’t do well initially will get many more views from searches as time goes by. Be patient and consistent with your video quality! I have some videos posted years ago which still receive a good amount of views!

Sticking to a niche helps the algorithm like you mentioned, but I don't think it helps the creator as much in the long run.
My music reactions are the only videos the algorithm picks up, but I get insanely bored sticking to that niche and I don't believe it would lead to massive "success" either. The most popular RUclipsrs are watched for personality, people usually could care less what PewDiePie is playing or watching. So in my opinion, if you're a creator who believes you have a strong personality, you should leverage that to branch outside your niche. Though I do suspect it'll take a much longer time to catch on haha

I have two channels. One with a niche and one without one, just me. The niche channel is a side project, teaching people a language. The other one is my passion project. The niche channel is growing like crazy even though I'm almost never uploading, cause two videos went semi viral. The other one is on a plateau, because people don't like a mix of things. But I do. So yeah, I'm going to keep this up. Because I hate niches and I seen how bad niches are creatively on my other channel. It feels almost like a job!

Don't worry about having a niche, but do worry about having a clear value proposition that your audience can expect to get from your content. If you go too willy nilly with what value your delivering, people won't stick and you won't grow.

Man, we are the same human. I haven't went all in on RUclips because I generally love so many things but have been so worried that a channel with multiple niches, or atleast no specific niche, would completely flop. My brain can not just settle into 1. A jack of all trades is a master of none, but often time better than a master of 1.
    Here's to the future.

I started out posting random videos I thought could help people as I worked on my house and cars. I'm now up to 200 videos combined in both niches, and growth has been very slow and steady; based on limited responses to a poll, most people are not interested in both niches. Granted, I finally made significant changes last year, including appearing on camera, posting to social media, improving thumbnails, and using more effective tags. Upload consistency could be better, but some videos still get very few views while others do well; I believe it's because the subscriber base is split between the two niches. Playlists and color coordinated thumbnails to differentiate between the two niches haven't seemed to matter much. I've wrestled recently with whether I should create a second channel or focus on just one niche.
RUclips is a great creative outlet, but the reality is that most people, unless you have a very charismatic personality or a unique hook, are best served to stick to one niche for strong, consistent growth. It may work to have more than one niche if they are closely related, but I would strongly and honestly consider the viewer if growth is important.

    • @b3naqua
      @b3naqua  3 года назад +1

Thanks for sharing your experience! Lots of interesting points. I agree - sticking a consistent and clearly defined niche will probably increase growth faster. I still wonder how far I can stretch my channel sometimes topics-wise.

I'm really struggling with this right now. It actually stopped me from starting a channel for ever cause I just don't want to only make videos about only one thing. I'm doing this cause I love making stuff and the thought of only making vids about a single thing depresses me. I think I would start to feel like a salesmen if I was just making reviews, and I want to make content about my van, but i don't want to have a "vanlife" channel. I think I have no choice but to just make a "me" channel and hope it resonates with folks. I'm trying not to focus on the numbers at the start and just focus on making stuff. Love your channel.

Thank you so much for sharing this Ben! The main reason I've been procrastinating with starting my YT channel is that I have many interests and things that I like to learn and talk about. And I felt that if I started my channel I needed to chose a topic that I could be consistent with. But also being a creative my mind doesn't fixate on one topic. It's all over the place, like you said. However, a buddy of mine said my niche is travel. I agree but I'm also passionate about other things as well. But this video definitely gave me some clarity. I like that you statement authenticity = "success". That's what I'm all about authenticity! I don't want to create content just to get a silver play button. I want to create content to express my creativity, inform/make people smarter, and just genuinely help them. Like what you're video did for me. Now it's just time to start pumping out content. Channel 8 your channel is awesome! I’ve been a sub for a while 👏🏼👏🏼 but yah I feel you. I forgot to mention this in my video, but another pro of not having a niche is you can basically do whatever you want and not feel as confined to just do one thing to exhaustion. But the potential downside of that is it can feel overwhelming sometimes to come up with good content when the subjects are TOO broad and undefined, if that makes sense. I’d say maybe experiment with other types of content on your channel and see what sticks for you 👍🏼

Also, i think staying to one ‘niche’ would only grow your subscribers fast but at the end of the day if you have somehow monetized the channel, the only things which would matter now is ‘views’. Just bring audience to your channel and videos that’s it. If they wanna subscribe your work would speak for that. So if you’re not really obsessed with the subscription number then it’s all good ☺️

I have been struggling with this question for a while now, thank you for uploading this, it gave me time to consider this more.
My final take is: If the subjects can be identified clearly and you plan on making a lot of content about that one subject, make a channel for it, and have a catch all channel for everything else.
Here is my reasoning: it feels right to only have one channel, because I am many things, but all one person. But being honest with myself, I typically only watch people for the specific content they have I am interested in; I love people as people, but very rarely do I ever check out their branching topic "second channel" / "blog channel" etc, and this is true even for people I watch very regularly. If it so happened that the person were to be a total match for my interests, then I probably would watch all of their content.
I think the main issue is, if I want anyone to see my very specific content at all, I don't want it to never be recommended to those who would watch it, because youtube thinks other channels about the same content have better interaction because half my videos aren't about that topic and don't get interacted with by my subscribers.
I want to make content on three major topics: spirituality, gaming, vlogging. I've been struggling with this issue for a while now, and it seems like those topics are so very specific and different that just separating the videos into three channels would just be beneficial.
I think they would grow disproportionately, and maybe it would be a hassle to manage 3 channels, I don't know. I certainly would rather have 3 channels where the one I put the most effort into ends up being the most successful one, and they can cross pollenate each other if those people are either really interested in me as person or genuinely in the specific subjects.
Pretty much everything else in this world has been built into narrow focused functions, it's what people are very comfortable with. People created separate companies for each specific service. When a major artist breaks into another genre or art form, people generally lose their minds. And the youtube algorithm rewards this narrow focus, right now. Maybe we can change it, and it feels somehow right to want to change it, but until then I think it's best to play with the algorithmic hand we are dealt.
Best of luck Ben Aqua. XD

    • @b3naqua
      @b3naqua  4 года назад

Very introspective and resonant thoughts! There may be ways to experiment with some crossover of those 3 subjects you're narrowing your channel(s) down into. For example, a vlog where you're gaming and also talking about spirituality. I really like creators who have a main topic for the video, but also will include other random thoughts or observations outside of it that are connected to a bigger picture or concept. My videos are usually about a particular topic across many niches, but sometimes I'll sprinkle in some talk about mental health, self-care, or a random line about something completely unrelated just for fun. idk how much that stuff resonates, but it feels authentic to my process. Good luck with your channel! Experiment.

Totally agree with you Ben. I think what you're going for the is "personality", "celebrity" brand. In my mind I had a hunch that this is what the RUclipsrs who advocate one channel would say, and you've just confirmed it after multiple other videos I just watched about having multiple channels. So here's what I've found including the content from your video:
    - People who want to SELL something (maybe even 1 thing or 1 family of products), have multiple channels, one for each of these things or families.
    - People who want to SELL/showcase themselves and their viewpoints on different things, basically have 1 channel to market the person/style of opinions.
Here are my own thoughts after reading the above two points I typed. Perhaps if we start with the 2nd, and then we find that one of our playlists is blowing up, like my music for example, or my videos on mental health, or even my book reviews, maybe double down on that type of content to grow the channel faster (if the aim is to grow the channel fast that is).
Thanks so much man, I'm glad to know there are more people out there like me hahahaha.

Thank you for this video. I want to start a RUclips channel for a really long time but I am interested in way too many things, and my interests changes around pretty fast. A lot of top RUclipsrs are saying things like "You need to find your niche and stick to it!" and I've been kind of lost and discouraged. I think I will start my RUclips channel when I move out from my family. Thank you so much for this advice, I can tell you're a really nice and genuine person. You have my subscription! Ah thank you for the wonderful comment and for subbing to my channel! I think there is some truth to the "sticking to a niche" approach, but I think I'd burn out pretty quickly if I only did videos about one topic. If finding a niche is making you feel discouraged, I'd suggest creating content about whatever interests you, and I think over time you'll find your groove! Good luck!

I'm going to keep following my heart at least until I gain enough subscribers to really know what brings the most value to my audience.

Well done! It's nice to see that other people have taken a similar path that I have. One thing that you may have forgotten to mention is that the content should still have value to the viewers. If I were to have stuck with let's plays and made other random videos that people didn't care about, my channel wouldn't have grown to 1000 subscribers. What I've instead done is focused mainly on searchable content within different niches (mainly tutorials). Tutorials are perfect for a variety channel, because in general people who watch tutorials will leave once they receive the value that they had searched for, thus not subscribing and lowering ctr of the other types of content that they're uninterested in. I have also done some videos just for me, like my video about How Bad Can I Be but it's The Forest. Variety content gives me the freedom to post videos about several topics that I'm interested in, while at the same time still delivering that value that's needed to stand out on RUclips.

    • @b3naqua
      @b3naqua  3 года назад

I think you, like me, are a scanner personality. We are interested in 1000's of things. Little Da Vincis :) Or knowledge or interest junkies. Your metaphor with the exploding brain is absolutely apt. Ideas pop up in us like thoughts of unfinished todos in others. Whereby those still come in addition.
To give you a better idea of me: I studied computer science (I work as a successful freelancer for companies like Daimler, Zeiss, and EnBW in Germany as a software engineer and architect), but I'm also a former lawyer, ex-bodybuilder, ex-boxer, ex-punk, musician, ex-ex-drinker, etc.
I recently started a (tiny little) RUclips channel and almost 99% of RUclipsrs, the successful ones, pray the in unison: Always focus on one and only one niche. If you don't, your legs will fall off, aliens will abduct you, and every chainsaw murderer in the world will save your home address under his yet-to-be-sawed list.
I even picked up Tube Buddy, an online marketing research tool, to figure out what the good niche is. Sure, as a computer scientist, I love coding and software architecture. My first video is also about a tool used by software architects.
But I also like comedy (have my own podcast), just like I like music (Ableton Live, Fl Studio) and I'm extreme there too, I listen to death metal (Amon Amarth, Thy Art is Murder, Arch Enemy etc.) as well as Boris Brecha (Minimal) and a few rap songs.
    You sum it up aptly:
    Success or happiness.
Success in the sense of money I (don't) need anymore. You earn extremely well as a computer scientist. I would much rather just make videos that I enjoy, so the focus is on happiness. I'm also a good storyteller - at least, that's what the reviews of people who know me (and have just met me) say. Don't laugh (any more), I also write novels. I also want to tell something about RUclips, inform people but also entertain them, become a bit famous on the side, yes, that too. To be honest.
But I have some jitters on that point.
But I don't want to become a little RUclips channel that only my daughter watches.
You are so far the first and only one who gives me hope that scanner personalities also have a chance to make a RUclips channel without focusing like the marketeers preach. I'm so glad I saw your video and thank you so much for it!
And I sincerely hope you are right.

Thank you for this video, Ben. I’m so glad to read the comments that share the same sentiments. I’m a handbag lover and watch tons of YT videos every day on handbags. So, since I retired and now have free time, I decided to start my own channel about handbags. It’s growing very slowly. After 2 months I gained only 40 subs. One day I thot I’d throw in a clip of me trying on some sneakers. I mean bags, sneakers, they’re all part of styling, right? I lost 2 subs immediately. I mean, when you have only 40. Going down by 2 is a lot. I panicked and removed that post. So stressful. I also feel there’s a lot of competition and I know I will not be able to match up because I can’t afford to unbox a new bag every other week. That’s why I’m starting to reconsider if I want to just have fun and also post about other stuff that interests me, like fashion, or cooking diabetic-friendly foods since I’m a diabetic myself or even doing walking tours to show my country to the rest of the world.

But yet I have playlist that categorize tips and tricks for HVAC, electrical generators. I also have videos of sports such as basketball and cooking as well. What do you recommend I do as a working man who owns an HVAC company? How should I handle this stick to just outdoors hunting and fishing since it seems to be what's working the most or the second? Most viewed content is tips and tricks about HVAC, electrical, etc.? I find myself doing both a lot and it is my passion to show how blessed the family is even after the murder of my mother that you can pull through anything and we want to keep people laughing also. Maybe just have them learn something new they never knew before at the same time record all the great things we'll get to do as a family, which seems to be interesting to most of our viewers. .! You're an awesome speaker bro! This video gives so much reasons for many to use or to have one's personality or herself or himself or oneself as a niche. I also can't imagine keeping myself doing only one thing. I'm interested on how you started getting yourself in Spotify and what distribution company did you tapped in? You're a great story teller. You have the potential to become huge with storytelling as a niche. Good luck and more power to your channel. Thanks for this video and God bless.

I started RUclips 6 months and I haven't grown for exactly that reason and also because of other things like posting very little and no SEO. I do agree with you though. I hate that this video doesn't have a lot of views. It should!!! I'm a creative too and I don't want to be limited. I am planning on lying to the algorithm. I'm planning on creating titles that include multiple things lol.If you have the time, watch me. Love this CHANNEL!!!!! and agree with everything you said.

lol I feel you! There are def pros and cons to the no-niche approach. Using special keywords is a good idea! I'd suggest making sure they have something directly to do with your content tho - so the titles don't deceive people lol. Thx for the support!

Thanks for this video. For the life of me, I just could not stick to a single niche. I could at least see that most of your videos relates to each othet. Example, a person interested in photography may want to consider good headphones to get especially if they also use their cameras to make videos, hence a good set of headphones would come in handy during editing.

I feel you on that! I also think a lot of ppl are similar to us, where they may have a speciality or main interest, but they’re also interested in all kinds of tech. I think there’s a lot of overlap in gear too, for example phone cameras vs mirrorless cameras, how they interact, etc. I enjoy the experimentation with different formats and topics. Keeps it fresh!

I still think im going to have to channels
    One about pet videos
And one about what I fell like making
    Gaming the sims
And some other topics I need to define
My mind is also all over the place and I would not be happy just talking about one niche
    My channels are
    The happy pet

I’ve painted myself into a corner. I went for a political niche, but I’m sick of it. All I want to do is camera reviews now. I made a new channel, but rather keep all my content under my main channel with my name. Great advice. I’ve found your channel searching many topics.

Recently I created a second channel but haven't started posting on it yet. So a little about my current (main channel), i started posting things about everything Im interested in from skateboarding to swimming, workouts to general sports talk, but I feel like I just have so many different niches and topics that i make on this one channel it gets a bit messy and bad for the youtube algorithsm. I've seen some video do pretty well whilst the others not so much. So i wanted to make the second channel for ONLY my exercise and fitness stuff whilst my current one is just for life/vlog/skateboarding. But the issue is i dont have so much time to focus on both and I also feel too involved and dedicated to my current channel to be able to make that switch all of a sudden. Like it feels like I have to restart everything, not that I have a lot of subs on this channel anyawys but I worked quite hard on it and it has been growing slowly but consistently lately. So i'm quite troubled on what to do and how I should go about, maybe slowly cut down on the topics/niches that are not getting so many views? So just focus on like 2 instead of 5

What about doing the Niche on a particular day of the week so your subs always know that for example on Thursdays there's a new photography vid.
