I actually just bought the 660s recently, they're are not bad at all, they're my first Sennheiser so I'm not sure what I was expecting, but for anyone new to the hobby I can see the 660s plus a nice amp being all you need.
For me though, it may be time to start exploring tube amps finally.
Honestly, the entire point of the 58x and 660s was actually to NOT need an amp (and to utilize the technically superior HD700 driver, at the expense of some timbre of course). They also have significantly better imaging, making them far more well rounded for different genres, gaming, etc. I have the 660s and absolutely love them, I can say with full confidence that they don't really benefit from additional power and don't really seem to scale with anything much. They're basically perfect as is right out of the box. It's a shame that they have so many detractors just because their starting price wasn't worth it over the existing models and because their tuning is slightly darker.
The HD650/6XX is still allegedly the best for getting that sound that everyone always praises, particularly with things like vocals and jazz specifically. There's a reason why this line has been around for like 30 years. I'm told that they also absolutely love tube amps, are basically made to scale with expensive amps, AND actually take on part of the sound characteristic of whatever they're plugged into. The problem with them is that the characteristics mentioned, while romanticized by audiophiles in the way record players and old guitars are, are indicative of older, outdated, and imprecise tech that some might find undesirable in its quirks. It makes it pretty hard to get 100% out of them simply because it takes some experimentation.
I've been collecting the Senn 600 line and I just got my last piece the HD600. My 1st was the 58x, then 660s, then the 6xx and finally the 600. I researched the 580P but considering how close it is to the 600 and that they are so hard to get genuine because ppl have been known to swap the drivers and sell the shell's to pass them off as 580's I just compromised on going w/ the 600. There are 5 versions of the 580. If you can find a genuine 2nd or 3rd revision grab it the scaling on tubes is one of the best from what I've heard.
which do you like better between the 6xx and the 600?

I've always gone through tons of desktop drivers over my life. usually lasting no longer than a year and a half.
I got my HD 650s in mid 2017 and they're the same pair on my head right now. the chassis is grimy as frig but they stood the test of time. The drops from desk height, getting pulled or yanked. The mesh grills falling off. earcups wearing thin with material.
They still sound as crisp and as vivid as they did when I took them out the box.
I drive them through a Soundblaster PCIe expansion card. 600ohm.
I spent well over $500 going through headphones that broke, were poorly made, drivers stopped working or degraded.
If these stopped working today Id throw another $350 at a new pair in a heartbeat. But I dont expect them to stop working.
I’m a HD600 guy I just love the analytical sound of them they never disappoint paired up with a fiio dac and amp setup and and a fiio btr5 and btr7 for portability haven’t tried a tube amp yet but I’ll be looking to get into one soon.
saving up money to buy the 600 as my first open back
I have all of them amazing Headphones. HD600 for clarity , HD650 for smoothnes and HD 660s for speed, imaging and dynamics .
Brother which do you recommend for movie soundtracks with great midbass like THE MARTIAN & L.O.T.R?
@@johnrodriguez2922 most mid bass get the 650 . Best for separation get the 660s. But if u want big soundstage but not mid bass get the Sundara.
To me 660s are the headphone that can do most things great some perfect and very little just ok.
@@johnrodriguez2922 If u only use them for soundtracks maybe u should Consider a cheaper alternative with alot of midbass and big soundstage like HD599 .
Thanks bro; I actually have a pair of SUNDARAS! Lol & THANX for the Tip.
I'll try them THANX & I'll let you know & JUST to let you know I have the SUNDARAS paired with the IFI HIP DAC2 OR do you recommend something better & with more power?
When both hd650 and Hd660s are driven with a higher powered solid state amp I feel the hd650 have slightly more control & weight to the sound of the music than the 660s. This is probably due the fact the 660s are easier to drive, and the volume increases a lot quicker. With the hd650 the volume comes from essentially further away giving the illusion of more space & blackness behind the music, seemingly making it easier to place instruments & vocals apart from each other. On the flip side I imagine the 660s would shine on a lowered powered amplification source. Maybe something to keep in mind when deciding one over the other. Both are excellent headphones, unfortunately can’t comment on the hd600..
I love my HD600s. I mainly use them for more relaxed genres, especially classical or jazz. I mainly listen to louder genres and haven’t heard the other versions. I’ve thought about picking up a pair of 650s, but i’m on the fence about it. The 600s sound beautiful, but aren’t very technical compared to other headphones i have. Maybe i’ll find a used pair.
We can keep an eye out for an open box pair for you with full warranty if you want, just let us know. :) thanks for your support @Tiffany Flannagan ***Marcello TSAV
I find the 650 a bit more aggressive than the 600. E.g.: AC-DC is way more fun in the 650.
What would you recommend to begin with out of these three?
I have already ordered an amp and a DAC for it
My personal favorites are the 660s2 and HD650
My 660s with a Harman EQ sounds fantastic, I don't understand why some complain about base performance of these, especial with a Low-Shelf EQ.
because Harman EQ is not for audiophile-grade headphones, but for consumer-grade ones. those who really like the HD*** sound and respect them will not use Harman EQ or another EQ with these headphones. But if u like it with EQ then you like it :)
This Review must be the PINNACLE of HD600,650,660s Headphones . Its EXACTLY what every headphone is and for people like me that we have all of them and love all of them we Understand Exactly what he is Saying . I bored seeing people having or review those headphones without having a lot of months of listening side by side .
Thank you!!! We appreciate you!!
Was Good Will hunting last week and bought a pair of 660 S for 15 bucks. I knew i was getting a steal cause they were sennheiser, but was mind blown just what an amazing pair of headphones i got.
15$? haha if they wasnt abused like hell you got best deal ever
Hey guys. Has anyone paired the HD 650 with the CXA81, I like the sound and stage that the Cambridge, has and it would be good if the 650 had that decent midrange. Second question, how do the M3s compare to the HD 650?
Thanks 🎉
Can someone help me with an answer that can determine me in purchasing the Sennheiser HD 600:
Can I drive them directly from headphone output of a dedicated sound card from my PC? (in my case M-Audio Revolution 5.1)
Thank you.
tried all of these :))) i just bough the 600 i think they sound the most natural and clear
Mean whiley TYGR 300r with 32 ohms and 95 sens is harder to drive than the hd600 lol
HD 660s
Is it dark or bright
@@Tesseract9630 in my opinion the hd600 is the brightest. The 650 the darkest and the 660 right in between (possibly leaning towards a darker presentation, but not really dark per sé)
@@TheLatin89 I heard it doesn't have any air above 10k. Thats why I stayed away from it
It was the HD 598 for me. Still using them today. They still sound brand new. Sennheiser is such an incredible headphone brand.
My HD 598s just died, and I'm searching for replacement that could be ran with Ifi Go Blue (or Fiio BTR7). Powerfull female vocals, Nightwish, FFDP, Poets of the Fall, Eagles.. I fear that HD 600s might be too.. tiring(?) for my ears (AKG K712 Pros are), and possibly lack the lower end oomph.. or.. would they fit the bill 🤔
Audio tech is up there and Hifiman headphones are actually better
@@aakoo4006if you loved the HD598 like I did.
Then you will love Sennheiser Momentum 3 XL with HiFi Tuning enabled or HD650 or HD600 with IFI Zen DAC V2 (with xboost enabled for edm and hip-hop).

Hi great informative video, I have 660 and 6xx, I fitted the customs cans bass mod and does improve bass at bottom end I also replaced the pads for thicker ones , I also done the same with 660, I use my 660 on my ifi zen dac v2 with the true bass selected and this does make the 660 can alive . 05:55 660s... As owner of very humble wall-socket-headphone-amplifier, I agree. Something completely changed. Before: Ear-tiring sound, even if ok - After: I still need (after some years!) nothing more.
This is the best comparisn of the 6xx series on youtube. Thanks!
Great comparison. I just bought the 660S, with the hope that I can drive them out of my iPad Pro.
Also, they came down in price now that HD660S2 is out.
Awesome congrats!!
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup Thanks.
Hey, so were you able to drive them with your ipad?
@@wanmeireles7182 Yes, but I needed the volume to be just a couple of clicks louder. So I bought a Bluetooth amp. Fiio BTR7. It works great. Now it’s great, but I could handle a bit more volume on certain songs. It’s fine though. No complains.
I also have Audeze iSine20 and I can’t use it at max volume because it’s too loud.
I just noticed that at my age, I can't even hear anything around or above 20,000 hz. lol
Having tried all these models, I settled on 58X, where the capsule has a slightly different design and therefore sounds cleaner / nicer in the middle than in the 600. The 650s are very difficult to listen to, especially on the double bass, as there is a noticeable emphasis on the mid-bass.
Thanks for sharing
For me 650 > 600 > 660s. I love the fullness of the 650 and with a Harman EQ they're just great. 600 is extremely close, but a bit leaner sounding. 660s is between the two, but I don't find any reason to pay more for it.
I try all of them and the most relaxing and musical is still hd650 the real king
It’s a good one, for sure! ***Marcello TSAV
listening on HD600 now and just ordered hd650..;D
Decided to send back 650s the same day they arrived.I could keep only one and it was rather easy pick for me.Hd600s had to stay due to clarity and better vocals over smoothness of 650s.I found them way too dark and although bassier and fuller the vocals and details dissapeared.Too dark.If I've never heard 600s before it would 've been easily 650s but listening to both side by side 650s sounded way too muddy .If you listen songs with vocals rather than instrumentals 600s are better for it.Also, with Zen Can Xbass feature is easy fix for small bass boost keeping all these details and vocals upfront is a win.The bass is definitely there and it's done just right to my ears(also 3d feature on Zen Can improves sound stage in games and it's done beautifully unlike others fake surrounds sounds-you can use bass boost and 3d simultaneously - I will never get rid of my 600s
@@indorr yea 6xx/650 mud is thicc, best is 600 on tubes

Would be my first Sennheiser. Nice video! I gotta Scarlett Solo Amp will the 650 perform well? Thank you.
Personally haven't tried that amp before, so I can't comment.
Can I ask how loud are the headphone sound outside of the headphones when played at above volumes as they are all open back?
They are all open-back headphones, so if sound leakage is an issue, I would look at a closed-back set of headphones
I just got the 650s and did research before on many before buying, and let me tell u omg the sound with my dac is soooooo beautiful.
which dac you using ?
Hi,
Do you think 270 USD worth for the HD660S ?
I can buy them with a big discount :) .
But I saw some reviews that the HD600 are better..
Thanks !
You can pick up a gently used pair of the 660s for much less around $220-$240. I listed my 660s on HeadFi for $220 minus shipping and fees, it's still there for sale. I don't prefer the HD600 and much prefer the HD650, 660S, and 660S2 over the 600.
Thanks man!@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup
Can these headphones great for mobile (celphone) playback? Let say LGV30 or Iphone with Dragonfly DAC
They will all perform better with a more dedicated headphone amplifier. The OG 660s will perform the best with a dongle DAC amp like a dragonfly.
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup Thanks. Is the HD 600 easy to dribmve from mobile without DAC?
is the HD600 more flat and good for studio monitoring, while the HD650 has more bass and treble, making it good for everyday listening?
It depends on who you talk to, but I think that is a fairly good assessment however the HD600 has the most treble and least amount of bass.
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup ah... I saw the impedance in the specs... so maybe if I plug this into a digital piano (like the Kawai ES920 or Roland FP-90X), those are not that powerful to drive the HD 600 or 650 so the sound may be quite low volume
@@winterheat 650 trebles are very bad

I don't think they are being made anymore sadly.
@op, great review and comparison! However, for your amp.suggestions in the description, you're kidding me right? Four figures for a headphone? That's ridiculous. I wouldn't spend that on a set of speakers, let alone a headphone amp.
Getting realistic, How about recommending an amp under $500?
Would love to see this great review alongside the hd6xx, which i have, and thoroughly enjoy and recommend, cheers !!
6XX is just like 650, custom cans got video where is shown how 6' series differ mainly by 1 foam inside, 6XX got cheaper looking plastic but no wonder if they wanted it cheap
Hello, I am completely new to the audiophile scene. I usually listen to jazz and classic rock (Beatles, CCR, Eagles and stuff) and would like to know which of these would be better suited for such type of music? I currently use Shure 215 and Bose QC35ii if that helps. Thank you.
It's hard to say, and depending on who you ask, some will say the 600, others will say the 650, and the 660s2 not seen in this video might be the best of both worlds.
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup thank you for the reply. Also, any AMP/DAC that you would recommend for the 600/660s2?
WITCH 1 WOULD BE THE BEST PICK FOR GAMING?
The HD800s would be the better pick for gaming thanks to its incredible soundstage performance IMO. @J Goody
You are among the best speakers i ever heard. Calm, clear, ....

I just started the audiophile thing . I just want to own a sendhiezer like hd600 ,but there is a lot of choices.I ordered the Arya stealth.and I want the best .a lot of reviews and I only get more confused what to get from sennhiezer.
What type of sound do you like from your headphones? Warm neutral, Neutral Analytical, etc. Personally the HD600 aren't for me but so many people love them. I personally own the HD650, HD660s, HD660s2 and the HD800s.
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup I would like a good sound over all and good bass
@@Karma_-l check out the Audeze LCD-X, I compared them to the Arya Stealth and if you like clarity with Bass and a little more intimate sound not completely spaced out, you will like them. Just my advice at that price point. Sennheiser may have a model that competes at a lower price point with some sacrifices, I’ll have to leave it to our guy on this channel here to comment on that.
HD660S sound just wrong to me...
Fair enough!
Great review. Question - if I use any of these headphones with my Denon AVR receiver, do I need an additional headphone amp? Or, discussion about such amps only really relates to heapdpne use with PC or phone? Thanks in advance!
It would depend on the power output of your AVR on it's headphone jack and how well it matches the impedance requirements of the headphones. In my experience a dedicated headphone amplifier separate of your AVR will provide a much better listening experience with all of these headphones.
This might be a really dumb question but which would you recommend for listening to Audio Books and Podcasts?
I think any of the three would work fine for books and podcasts the bigger question would be what are you using to drive them? If you are listening directly out of a phone and not an amplifier then the OG 660s will be the easiest to drive.
@The Source Audio Video Design Group I have a BTR7 which I believe should be plenty. I have a pair of DT 990 Pro 250 Ohm & 900 Pro X's but have really been wanting a pair of sennheisers. I think I'm leaning towards the HD600's for their perceived clarity.
@The Source Audio Video Design Group listening to my DT 900 vs DT 990 (250 Ohms) the DT 900 sounds cleaner, if I were to mod my DT 990's to have a balanced connection do you think that would make them sound cleaner? Or should I get one of the sennheisers with balanced cables to get a cleaner sound?
Those multi color skulls are really cool for storing headphones. Where can I get them?
As far as I know they are no longer made.
Which sounds better to you, Edition XS or 650?

I enjoyed your video. Nice job. I am forty-three years old. I am sight impared. Blind enough to read Braille. Sighted enought to enjoy the difference between OLED TVs and LED TVs. While this may make socially fitting into the blind world and sighted world difficult, video is half of the picture--no pun intended--😊. Whether you like studio recordings, concerts, TV shows, or movies, I believe audio is a more important part of the equasion than today's society (who would spend thousands on their TVs) believes it to be. But our dedication to audio could be our common ground.
Currently, I have a Yamaha YH-E700A closed-back Bluetooth headset, and Sennheiser openback HD 559 and HD 599 headphones. I prefer openback headphones so I can be aware of my surroundings. I prefer the more natural middle and upper registers of the HD 559. However, sometimes the high-bass and low-mmid registers of the HD 559 and HD 599 sound overemphasized. Last year, I returned the Sennheiser HD 400 PRO because I thought their midrange and possibly treble are overemphasized, and their bass is weak. I am considering selling my Yamaha YH-E700A on Amazon so I could get either the Drop Sennheiser HD 6XX or the Sennheiser HD 600, 650, or 660S. Being that I don't listen at high, deafening volumes which block out my surroundings, will connecting 300-Ohm or 150-Ohm headphones directly to a laptop or home theatre audio/video receiver block potential in my case? Also, at more comfortable listening levels, between the 600, 650, 6XX, and 660S, which headphones have (1) a more natural bass register that's not overemphasized like on the HD 559 and HD 599, nor weak like on the HD 400 PRO, and (2) don't have (a) heavy mid and treble registers like on the HD 400 PRO, nor (b) slightly boosted treble like on the HD 599?
We're you born that way? Also would you say your hearing is heightened as a result?
@@davids.816 They SAY that when one of your senses are weaker, that heightens the rest of your senses. I think when one sense is weaker, you learn how to be more aware of and use the other senses. I don't think I have anything beyond human ability. So during Amazon's holiday return policy, I tried the HD 600 and HD 560s (2022 revision), and kept the HD 560S (2022 revision) because of lower bass response and slightly less boosted upper bass and slightly less treble sibilance. I think everything coming from my A/V sources sounds the closest to in person I've ever heard from headphones. I miss the cosmetics of the HD 600, but in the end, it's on the inside that counts.
My two cans:
Senns HD 650 paired with the Little Dot III Tubed amp
Grado SR125 paired with the Little Dot III Tubed amp or the Little dot DAT SS amp...
Would love your thoughts on this combo....
Man it has been a couple years since I have listened to anything from Little Dot; but my preference would be with the HD 650 over the Grado for sure.
Hey I have an Asus Xonar Essence STX with x3 Burson V6 Vivid opamps and I'm wondering if you know what price range of tube amp would be a decent upgrade over it if I decide to get headphones like these I currently have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro 250 ohms. It's hard to find comparisons to my soundcard with the burson opamps online.
I have the edition xs hd600 and Mr speakers aeon closed. I can tell you right now that the kph30-40i are better than the hd650 and the 660s
Glad you are liking them.
Can you EQ HD660 to sound like HD600?
They have different drivers as well as impedance. I suppose you could likely get them closer to them same signature using EQ, but to be honest, I have never tried that and don't usually use EQ much and prefer tube amps or tone control.
Funny, I always found the 660 more edgy sounding than the 600, and NEVER analytical (that's my audeze LCD-XC). The midrange is reference level in the HD600 and always has me going back for more. So much so, I bought a $1k Kimber Axios cable and never looked back. For sure with tubes it's a match made in heaven. 👌🎼🏆✨

Believe he said 650s. : )
I just bought the hd 600 only last week. Initially I was disappointed while plugging into phones and Bluetooth dacs. But once I got it properly amplifier, man the clarity is amazing.
I had hd 650 before 4 times. Never liked it enough to keep it. The treble is not extended to my taste.
I wanted to try the hd 660s. Never go the chance. In fact the hd 660s is cheaper than hd 600 at my location. I only stayed away from it because some people say they had an itchy treble and sounds dark at some times. I wonder if there is any crazy unit various going on as since other people have exact opposite experience.
Could just be the difference in amplifiers and DACs, too, regarding the 660s
sounds like 660s wins
The new 660s2 or 650 are my personal favorites. thesourceav.com/products/sennheiser-hd-660s2-pre-order?variant=42331146879132
HD 600
Pros :
- Very clear and detailed, it feels snappy.
- Neutral sound which is why many like this.
- Vocal is clear and forward.
Cons:
- Bass is not impactful as you find in a lots of review.
- Soundstage feels definitely narrow and restricted, I could confirm this after hours of usage.
- Not as enjoyable for a casual/normal user. That laid back and smoothness is missing.
HD 650
Pros:
- Much better based and sounds fuller.
- Soundstage is definitely better.
- Very smooth and laid back tune that could be used for hours without fatigue.
- Vocals are darker and recessed, if you like that.
Cons:
- Not as clear or detailed as you may feel when compared with HD 650
- Not neutral sound signature as HD 650
As my HD 650 got damaged I ordered HD 600 after so many wonderful recommendations online but in short it is not as enjoyable and non-fatiguing . So will try now HD 660s or something which is more enjoyable and return HD 600.
Considering enjoyability aspect in mind might be Sennheiser sound engineers tuning the subsequent versions of 600 series (650, 660s, 660s2 etc.) - Kudos to them for these wonderful Open-backs.
I'm still stuck on choosing the 660s or the 600 . I just want the vocals to sound natural and not metallic as I've heard people say . Which do you think has a more natural sounding tone in terms of vocals ? .
Personally the 650 is my favorite for vocals :)
I have the 600- bought the first in 1998, and the newer version this past year. I do think that the ergonomic profile of this speaker is an example of what modern speakers should aim for- lightweight and durable! I'd much rather have the majority of the money developing a headphone going into the driver's. That said, while I respect and admire the 600 series, they do not engage me either as much as lower cost solutions or more expensive solutions. In fairness, I do not own a tube amp and likely will not own one. A neutral signature is not my cup of tea...so far.
As a long-time lover of the 6 hundred series, mostly the 650, 660s, and now the 660s2, I think they really come to life with tube amplification. I also own the 800s and feel the same about them as well. You should really consider giving tube amps a shot or come down to the store and listen for fun.
@The Source Audio Video Design Group all of the 600 series are excellent! They are good value, as well, do to their durable build. Perhaps I will consider a tube headlamp as an experiment...in part because of the consensus of people like yourself.
11:50 wtf are u talking about?😮simple fact is hd600 the MOST natural of 3.
Maybe for your ears and audio chain. The HD600 is my least favorite of the 6 series headphones; it sounds like it has received an unnatural clarity boost, and it also sounds extremely thin in its bass response on my chain-no need to be aggressive with your comment. Different people like different things. All good. 👍
Hi I've been using the HD 598sr for 4 years and i decided to switch to the HD 560s but for high pitched volumes its very loud. I wanted to know what would be a better option. I need something with the same shape, I saw that the HD 660s are on sale should I get those? I need one for gaming. Please Help, Thank You
You could give the 660s a shot and see if they are a good fit for you. As with everything it will come down to your preferences.
looking forward to a review including 660s2 or just the HD 600 vs the HD 660s2 will resume it all 😁thanks for the video
Sennheiser HD 660s2 versus Sennheiser HD 650, which is the better Sennheiser headphone for you?

How did you manage to remove the cable on the new revision of the HD600? It's almost like it's glued on, still can't remove it without risking to break the cable altogether.
I didn’t have any issues
No issue with cables for me. . And i am using the new hd 600 built aug 2022. Seems like there is a problem with your unit.
