This is why Tatum receives unwarranted hate, the media continues to put him in conversations he doesn't belong. He's a great player but it's going to be hard for him to win MVP because there will be several nights he won't be the best player on the floor because Boston is stacked.
Boston is stacked, but he's also just not that guy. If he brought it on more nights, he'd get the shots and stats to be mvp. But other players outplay him often enough in big games that it highlights he's not mvp level.

Stat padding may be a fair assessment. Their team has too many quality scorers in the starting lineup to struggle hoe they have. But, when everyone has to wait around and can't operate with the ball because Jokic has the ball so much, it hinders the offense a bit.
If he got in better shape to he able to gave a bigger impact on the defensive end, he could free up more space on offense for other players to shine.
I'm not knocking his game, but their could be a fair point to be made about his play.

Mvp means if you take the player off the team they dramatically get worse than others. Put sga on the nuggets let’s see what they do put jokic on the thunder and Celtics let’s see what they do
One aspect of that to not forget is to swap out their top costar with a complimentary costar of similar value to make things as equal as possible. That said, swap out Murray with a Adebayo which is similar value positional and I think Denver wins the same amount of games, maybe up to 60.
Why don’t we just divide the players stats by 82 instead of by the players player games so we can actually have a discussion about their season.

He's been looked at as a front runner early on for a few seasons, but his stats never measure up. I think a lot of people are tired of putting him in conversations he simply hasn't proven he should be in.
MVPs used to be among the best defenders in the NBA, and now this decade’s MVPs are among the worst defenders in the league. 🏀No one seems to care about defense when it comes to MVP voting, but it definitely matters a lot when it comes to winning close playoff games and championships 🏆
Jokic is Top 10 in 4 categories with third best record in NBA and Nuggets wouldn’t make the playoffs without him SGA has a better supporting cast Thunder has a way better bench than the nuggets they run a 9 man rotation while nuggets run a 8 man rotation barely and they have to have two starters on the floor at all times
Gil's reasoning about SGA over Jokic is the same bias that he's accusing the media of because when the players were voting, they were even worse. They picked their favourite players. He had a point almost where the metrics should be used and things like true value stats measured and so there's no need for voting unless there's probably a tiebreaker needed. Denver minus Jokic = a playoff team? OKC minus SGA = a playoff team? That differential needs to be calculated or estimated when determining MVP too. Take Tatum off Boston, we know they're still a top 3 contender in the East and that's the problem. Now, if the team was constructed more like Denver then Tatum would be more in the running for MVP

The front runner for MVP is all about narrative and they rarely win so this whole conversation is moot.
The reason Tatum didn't get the MVP recognition from voters because he was carried by his team mates all year when he had average-bad games, they still won by 20+ usually. Which showed when he did have big games, they don't mean as much because they're not as dependent on him to play well. If Luka, Jokic or Shai had bad games, their teams almost certainly lose that night. Tatum it didn't matter so much. Hence the 6th place voting. Joker doesn't pass the ball to add assists to his stat line. He passes the ball because he sees a guy who is wide-open to talk a shot. He is the most balanced player in the league. Plus, he shoots a high percentage and his passes lead to super high percentage shots. Nobody gives up the ball to add assists to their stat line. Greedy players hold the ball and try to score no matter what because they want pad their scoring stats. These guys have it backwards.
