- The overall winner for Album Of The Month in April is Opeth's Blackwater Park, beating ELP's Brain Salad Surgery convincingly in the last week of voting. It is an extraordinary record. By turns heavy, quiet, brutal, delicate, beautiful.

Opeth are the pink floyd of extreme metal.
Opeth is pretty far from extreme metal, but I take your point.
🔥🔥❤Opeth❤🔥🔥
74 years old and they're my most favorite band ever.
Yes, it took me a while to accept growls, but Opeth is so exceptional musically, I was able to overcome it.
Opeth is the band responsible for me overcoming my gripe with harsh vocals as well. :)

@@DiegoDeschain Same here!
Yep, same here. It's Opeth that's got me into this mess :)

Blackwater park the title track is such a masterpiece, and so is the whole album. Legendary
This was another classic. I was lucky enough to own the CD when it came out. My world was blown apart, musically speaking. Such an important album in the evolution of Heavy musical styles.
I couldn't bear to listen to bands that used the growl vocal style until I heard this masterpiece of an album. Anyone who dismisses and will not listen to this very talented group of musicians because of the vocal style is missing out big-time.
This is to me the pinnacle of death metal.
A monumental masterpiece. 10/10. There are some albums I consider "personal" 10/10s, like, albums that I like the music so much that I can turn a blind eye to some production issues for instance, and still consider it a personal 10/10. This album is on another level, it's just a true 10/10, it has absolutely no flaws whatsoever. Brilliant.
PS: Opeth is the band that made me first understand and appreciate harsh vocals. Ghost Reveries was that album for me, it made me single handedly get into Opeth, and harsh vocals.
Hiya Jim, I voted for this album and thoroughly enjoyed all 4 of your Blackwater Park videos! This is my favourite Opeth album so it was a joy to see you loving it! 🫶. Can’t wait to see them headline Bloodstock this year 🤩
Layered, complex, and a joy to listen to!
Perfection. The last 7 minutes are like being beaten with sledgehammers until you experience nirvana. Double-kick, ebows, acoustics and even a hint of slap bass... outrageous really and I dont think any other album has matched this crescendo!
That little bass slap always gets me right *here*
Really like how long you hold your smile at the end of each video 😁👍....nice one....for some listening here to this might prove to be their growl music 'watershed' moment...
Ahar ahar ....sad Opeth joke alert!🃏
This and Bleak are two of my favorite harsh vocals in all of metal.
The reason why Blackwater Park wasn't among my favourite songs is, that it only has growls, but now clean vocals. This changed in 2014, when Opeth played at Graspop Metal Meeting and ended the set with Deliverance and "blew" us out of the tent with an powerful version of Blackwater park ....
My final words to Opeth are, that no matter how complicated the compositions are, they are always able to play it live as good as the studio versions 🤘
One of the best album listens on YT. Period. Thanks for doing this!
I didn;t vote but have watched all the videos and will do so again! I hope for some more Opeth in the future, maybe even the more proggy stuff! Awesome videos!
I would highly recommend something from Norway's Enslaved. Kind of the Norwegian Opeth in a way. Whereas Opeth came from the Swedish death metal scene, Enslaved came from the Norwegian black metal scene and became very influenced by 70s prog the more they went on. Maybe start with the "Axioma Ethica Odini" album.
Such an amazing album! Pinnacle of progressive music
The masterpiece.
This song is my religion🙌🖤
Enjoyed the reactions immensely!
Absolute classic. I know some people use this to introduce people to harsh vocals, but I tend to use gojira for that then suggest opeth, usually this album or ghost reveries.
My personal favourite Opeth album is actually Pale Communion, that album makes my soul feel fuzzy.
"The sun sets forever over Blackwater Park" such an amazing ending to this masterpiece of an album. My favorite album of all time for now but I don´t see it change any time soon...
Thanks for the listen, Jim!
I'll always maintain that Deliverance is the better album, but I'm glad this won for the month. It was fun listening with you. 😁
I agree with you concerning Deliverance plus Ghost Reveries on the same level 🤘
I am sad that you won't be including harsh vocals on these anymore. I understand that some people don't like them but man I feel like there's so much good music out there that I want to see you react to with harsh vocals.
I still go back to your "The Ocean Collective - Phanerozoic I" reaction, you had a good time with that record as did you with this one. I know you bought Phanerozoic II, you showed it in the video. I've been hoping one day for a reaction to that album. I also remember you reacting to my suggestions of their newest albums and saying that if the album was like that you needed to listen to it, I've been holding to hope but I swear these people who react so viscerally to harsh vocals are crushing my hopes.
I don’t think it’ll be for every monthly vote, just this next one!
@@JimNewstead Oh that's music to my ears Jim.
Love the content and watch whenever I can.
Regarding the number of votes vs number of views, I personally don't normal watch the videos until the whole of the album is uploaded. I sort of broke my own rule this time around, but 95% of the time that's how I like my experience. Though I see now that it looks like more people have watched the first two videos than the number of voted so it looks like it worked out in the end?
I have to say it took me about 5 years to get to a point where I could listen to music with harsh vocals. It still has to be low and guttural though. Max C of Sepultra [not quite growls] is the man for me. Sepultura/Soulfly and I quite like Katatonia Brave, murder, day with Michael on vocals.
This is the only Opeth album I have heard in totality. I'm pretty sure a friend made me listen to it in highschool in the early 00s. Was not a fan at that time. I liked metal and harsh vocals, but not so much proggy stuff. Twenty-some years later, having now become more of a prog fan, I enjoyed the album but can't call myself a fan. I don't think anything called out to me that would have me listen again. I would say it was an experience worth having, however.
You might like Deliverance more. It still has that Opeth "sound" but not as proggy.
@@MaraxisArcanist I'll keep that in mind for when I next try an Opeth album, thanks.
Im going to say it. I really like Opeth. However, they do this thing that I can't unhear. They seem to settle on an idea and then play it most of the time 4 times, sometimes 6 and then move on to the next idea. I prefer Still Life as I dont notice it as much. It makes it for me, difficult for repeated listens. The lead up to the final section of Blackwater Park is one of the pieces of music out there and can be listened to on repeat forever and a day.
This album is so good. People who complin about the vocals just miss out on some of the greatest music composed in the last 25-30 years. Open yourself up people!
The last four albums by opeth which all feature clean vocals are massively overlooked in my opinion, don't get me wrong I love the older stuff, but pale communion from ,2014 is a 10 from me,no duff songs at all.
Is this the best 'extreme vocals' album ever? I'm prepared to listen to any that you think are better. Really excellent. It's a shame that some people just can't accept this style - just think of it as another instrument rather than a vocal and see if that helps.
I like Deliverance and Ghost Reveries even a bit better 🤘
@@rudolfbecker4313 Maybe but Blackwater Park is a little heavier on the growls. Deliverance is probably the best overall album.
Lord knows I tried....
Ugh. This was fine when it was you talking then those bloody guitars started up. No one plays a decent flute anymore these days. I guess there’s plenty of other music in the world but it’s not going to stop me from whining about it here, and every other video featuring that infernal instrument you feature on your channel, for eternity. In the meantime I’ll just wait patiently for a public apology, then I’ll do it some more.
for god sake, open your mind brother!!
Someone needs their mayo to be less spicy
(Thinking the post was sarcasm, but it wouldn't be just him alone were it not)
Lol what?
I suspect there's some "vocals irony" afoot here. 😁
