  • The overall winner for Album Of The Month in April is Opeth's Blackwater Park, beating ELP's Brain Salad Surgery convincingly in the last week of voting. It is an extraordinary record. By turns heavy, quiet, brutal, delicate, beautiful.

    Dirge for November!🙌😭💀🖤
And the riffs in Funeral Portrait are insane headbanging goodness🤘🧝‍♂

I think the abrupt changes is Opeth' specialty ... and as you said it works both ways ... hard to soft, soft to hard... but even more interesting is, when a song changes from blastbeats to waltz rhythm ... as you can hear in the last song of the Deliverance album 😆

There are two bonus songs from BP you should listen to: "Still Day Beneath the Sun" and "Patterns in the Ivy II". They're exquisite!

I think Opeth were more concerned about making art than gathering a wide fanbase like some other bands we can mention (But we won't).
I love the growls and very happy they chose that vocal path, for me it made the album a classic. For me there's no "too bad's" in this one.
    It's perfect as is.
    Thank you Jim.

Dirge for november is a very special song when it comes to feelings and the story behind. Give a listen while reading the lyrics.
Its a suicidal song, where the first intro reflects the deciding suicide, and second part is where the suicide happens and the outro acoustic is the relief part.
When you met with Opeth, we say welcome to rabbit hole.

They were always a band that I knew I should of listenned to, but I never got around to it. That was why I voted for it and I'm not disappointed I did :)

Always thought Dirge of November was one of the greatest songs from this album. Wouldn’t say is repetitive but emphatic, less adventurous but much more sophisticated. Hope you get to enjoy it as much as I do.

I used to dislike Dirge but the more I listened to it and read the lyrics and understood what the song was about the more powerful it gets. The unrelenting nature of it to me is how it feels to be in complete despair & depression... a scary place but it captures it brilliantly & hauntingly imo. Really enjoying this play through though :)

Another day and more Blackwater Park. A good week this is!
Hey Jim, I think the audio of the music is a few seconds behind your reactions. At 18:09 you call out the piano that hasn't yet entered. (There were a few earlier moments I thought your reactions were a bit early)

Yeah, sorry. I started recording yesterday then get a call from my kid’s school to go in and help with an issue (he’s autistic non verbal so get lots of calls like that) and had to finish the video today. The sound was a bit out of sync today, I didn’t do my usual checks to control the quality. Doh!

One of my all time favourite albums... except for this quarter 😂 I'd still say this is potentially the greatest metal album and definitely opeths best, but on their previous album "still life" every song is great. Hope you do a listen along of that at some point!

This is the weakest portion of the album, mostly because Dirge for November is so sparse and repetitive, and less melodically potent than the rest of the album (but that opening is gorgeous). Funeral Portrait is great, Patterns in the Ivy is meh.
The outro to Funeral Portrait is the very first earworm they gave me. The first of so many. The chord progression being so bizarre is hard to ignore.

    • @rudolfbecker4313

Talking of earworms ... after my first Opeth concert in 2009 I couldn't get the break and the final section of Deliverance out of my head 😆 and after listening to more Opeth over the years I found more and more of those ... basically in all albums from Blackwater Park to Watershed .... later albums aren't bad either, but never had the same impact on me ...

Dirge for November is a "dirge." A "slow, solemn, and mournful piece of music." It may not be the most exciting piece on the album, but it lives up to its name.
