    My DIR-V was missing a waterproofing o-ring on the battery cap( and the battery spring as mentioned). They told me at first that they would replace the whole unit. Then I guess they figured it would be cheaper to just send me a new battery cap instead, so they did that. Definitely early adopter tech issues, which is surprising when considering the cost of the unit.

      dayum. Yeah. This is one of those things where it's neat for those pushing the cutting edge.
      But for the average joe. It's tough to say "drop 2100 bucks" or whatever the price is.

      @@BrassFacts goodness. The longer I own this unit the more it seems almost like a DIY kit or something.
      My battery cap screw started backing out under recoil. The selector knob on the back can easily slide off if you pull on it. Mine wasn't properly glued onto the selector inside. The selector knob has a sticker on it to show which mode it's on. That's why yours was misaligned on your new unit. Mine too. That can be fixed with some patience and rubbing alcohol, at least. The CR 123 depicted on the top sticker is slanted and it drives me nuts. They should've put that CR123A battery pictogram closer to the right edge of the sticker, closer to where it actually goes.
      I think they should've made another little crimped wire like on the battery cap for the diffuser so that it's alway with the unit. Or maybe something like the PEQ15s have. Anything but just letting it loose.
      Now I'm afraid the screws in the front lens assemblies might back out or something. I have more faith in a potted somogear than this thing TBH.

    I've learned already how the algorithm works, being a completely nonexistent channel and getting 8k views on my first serious video as someone with 30 subs because I jammed into the HSP TRMP product wave before anyone else reviewed it. That said, in this particular case I don't think your video will tank just because of the designate IR's low internet footprint right now. Because literally everyone who owns night vision is looking for a NOT 3000 dollar alternative to full power, fell off the supply truck PEQs (MAWL) and a vcsel laser illuminator is really high in demand. The next big thing will be the eotech laser. But then again night vision ownership is a pretty niche crowd, so you may max out around 30kish views on this. I don't know. I do know that personally I placed huge importance on this video and watched it twice the moment it came out lmao.
    Keep doing what you're doing bro. Big fan.

    Great review, I've had my DIR-V since early summer and I've been very happy with it. BTW the way the VCSEL gets around FDA regs is the VCSEL is an array of led emitters laid out like pixels instead of a single diode.

    • @verysmallcats1374
      @verysmallcats1374 2 года назад +14

      It's surface emitting lasers packed into a thing, not LEDs. Most lasers are side emitting iirc. The reason it works is - as far as I understand it anyway - it's technically many many emtters instead of one laser.

    • @KidCorporate
      @KidCorporate Год назад +3

      @@mikeanshit158 That's a hard call to make, I don't think the price/performance ratio of the MAWL makes any sense, particularly when they haven't had the best reliability track record, but then again I don't think the pricing of ANY full power or VCSEL-based laser system makes sense, the components and materials that go into them simply aren't that expensive, even the VCSEL arrays. The good news is that there's new products being introduced to the NV world at much higher rate now than really any time previously, so the answer to "the best laser system" will change.

    +1 for the designate IR-V. Love mine.
    Update: I had the gen1 unit, and I burned out the illuminator twice. Both times they have been EXTREMELY responsive. The first time they did a repair, the second time they sent me a brand new gen2 unit with all the updates. The new version has protections to prevent the illuminator from getting burned out. Disappointed in the failures, but I’m impressed that USNV and 3EIR genuinely wants to get this thing right.

  • @pnuemagger
    @pnuemagger 2 года назад +17

    Good review on the illuminator. I’ve got the 3EIR Vulcan illuminator head on my CTF2 (same VCSEL illuminator as the DesignatIR-V) and it’s pretty good for the price. So the DIR-V illuminator should delivers pretty good other than keyhole shooting. If you just want the better illuminator the DIR-V has, look at the Vulcan to get that illuminator, for ~$499 the Vulcan it’s a LEGIT competitor to the $800+ Kiji… yeah, it’s got less modes (only one) and a hair less throw (5-degree beam, measured), but it’s got a clean spot without too much spill. At the East Coast Night Shoot my Vulcan was throwing well out to the 400 & 500 yard berms. Which to be honest is about as far as you’d want to be shooting a 5.56mm rifle at something to begin with. I dropped a few videos showing the Vulcan illuminator in various conditions (and the DIR-V illuminator would be the same).
    FYI, CTF2/CTF3 + Vulcan and E1HT is ~$1350 so even better price than the D2/DIR-V and you get a solid white light option. However I’m actually running my CTF2 with a Vulcan/KM1E for the MAWL-at-home experience.

    Just getting into night vision stuff this year has been a little depressing for the lasers. I run a Perst-4 and Arisaka light with Malkoff head on my AKS-74U and it works well. I'm not a big fan of pressing two buttons but under the clock, I didn't have any issues activating both devices at the same time. The Perst is of course a bit harder to get now. I've used that setup out to 50 yards as that was what was available to shoot. Since it was cheap, I decided to grab a Somogear PEQ-15 clone. That thing is nuclear bright. It is not perfect, but it functions well for my limited time with it. We will see how it works after putting some rounds downrange.

    • @isaace8090
      @isaace8090 2 года назад +3

      Shannon's reply disappeared, but I plan to keep the Perst-4 as I like the size on my AKS-74U and will just continue to train to activate both buttons. I did snag a diffuser from ebay for the laser that diffuses the Perst's dirty beam and gives some illumination. Indoors it works great. Outside, it is lacking and the Malkoff head takes over illumination duties. I do plan to check out the new EoTech LAM when it launches. If the price is around $1500 and beats the other options in that price range, then it is probably going to be a must buy.

      I’ve had the exact experience. I’ve had my P3 for 2years now for $1300 and have been using it a ton Since now the only shooting I do now is at night. Thing has been rocksolid. The illuminator is amazing. even though this is a unusual way of doing things , I’ve consistently lit up my steel targets at 500 yards looking through a daytime optic with my PVS14. No problem at all making hits And that is looking through a 2.5 to 10 power scope I consider the P3 one of my best purchases. Now with the war andthe inflated prices, if I had to do it all over again today, I would get one of the full power peq15s that are used. Seem to be a good bit of them now, however, I see that their illuminators are drastically different one to another.

Apparently everyone and their mother is pissed off about something someone else did to yet another someone, all the while not being affected themselves in any way. It took 50+ comments before I got an answer that they "use lower quality lenses in their 14's". No proof, just what another person heard. My takeaway was that Facebook groups are stupid.

    I didn't even know this existed. I own a Steiner DBAL-D2, I2 9007 and an ATPIAL-C. While the DBAL-D2 easily out performs the other two, the thing is so chunky and so heavy I won't use it on anything with more than an 11.5" barrel. Out on the end of a 14.5" or 16" barreled gun the thing is obnoxious. So much so that I'd probably be willing to lose some illuminator power and go with a Steiner DBAL-A3 or pony up for a gray market full power laser.

    The price of IR equipment is getting way out of control.
    I'd wager that they're maybe in for $100 in materials, probably the housing being the most expensive single part. This seems to be the case with all of these devices.
    When I look at the price of laser diodes in IR, I'm just left completely baffled where we go from a $30 diode to a $2k unit. At least the holosun makes me feel like I'm getting something with a titanium housing at $1100, along with white light.

    • @rekerboi1125
      @rekerboi1125 2 года назад +1

      All about R&D. I'm trying to get my own lasers made and imported here, it costs a fucking lot of money. Board design, molds, cnc, parts, assembly, shipping, coalignment of lasers, etc. Obviously some devices are retardedly overpriced, but keep in mind you're not paying for the materials you're holding, you're paying for a functioning device that you can't make yourself because you lack the tools, skills, and knowledge to create and or buy all the necessary components needed to make a fully functioning laser. Oh and not to mention you're paying even more for FP due to it being over the legal limit. There's a lot more to lasers than just a plastic housing and some diodes wired together.

    • @skyhop
      @skyhop 2 года назад +1

      @@rekerboi1125 I get that but you don't see the same level of departure from component costs as you do in IR lasers. Hell, you don't even see it in night vision.
      The only guess I have at the expense is that the units are in an awkward area where people want them, but the market is too small for the economy of scale to bring the price point to something reasonable.
      Meaning that you're getting closer to paying for 1 offs than you are a serial production item.

    • @rekerboi1125
      @rekerboi1125 2 года назад +3

      @@skyhop right, because the market is so limited that companies can charge whatever they want because they know you'll pay for it anyway because you need it, just like insulin. Mass production is cheap, but at these prices it's like buying at serial production, not even. That coupled with price criteria depending on statistics of preexisting lasers and their abilities sets specific bars that are quite hard to beat. It's very difficult to be innovative in laser design to make something that checks all the boxes and can sell for high money. Like, nobody is gonna be selling lasers for 1k and under, absolutely no way. Profits too low to sustain employees and costs for time and materials. It hurts to be paying in the 1500-3k range, but that is an inevitability of this market. Lots of variables that go into account here.

    • @M1America
      @M1America 2 года назад

      @@HanzHermannHoppe It depends on how it is implemented, and how much is done to the images. Latency can be reduced by selecting the section of the image that produces a thermal signature and operating on that. Pin the tail on the donkey with the thermal, then draw the outline on top of the night vision picture. It doesn't even necessarily have to be low latency either because the information that would be used for the shot would come from the night vision picture itself. The thermals and anything drawn on the image would be for acquisition.
      Image intensifiers could be combined with "cheap" thermals. The crude blob from the thermal optic could be layerd onto the comparatively much sharper image coming from the nightvision. Together I believe the two types of sensors are better than the sum of their parts. But this is speculation on my part and borderline science fiction.
      I also believe that there is a plan in the works to include a solenoid into the M5. To where the trigger could be held down and the optic would decide when to pull the trigger.
      The idea is to maximize the hit potential with cold bore shots using passive aiming at range. I believe that is the core of the "near-peer" craze that the us military is involved in."

I think you can use it with Red dots too, but it's usually not worth doing. OF COURSE, you should in theory match the clip-on with the sighting system, like PVS-24's and UNS-SR go to the red dots and acogs, the PVS-24LR and 30LR and all the LR clip-ons go to the scopes capable of 10-25 magnification and so on, but I've been having a fine time running my 1-8 with an LR
