I just got an FR-8L today very similar to yours. I wanted to let people know that although these aren't programable by the beat, they're very programable in other ways. Between styles and tempo and with individual controls over the hi hat, cymbal/Snare and Kick you can quickly get this thing to play along with anything from Folk to disco. I'm going to use it to lay vintage sounding drum tracks to covers I wanna do. I also plan on using it to come up with new songs. The start/stop button on these allows you to come in exactly when you want to, so this combined with the mobility options you have with a DAW would make this perfect for any drum programming if you didn't mind a little extra work when you wanna add random fills. I might post a video about mine, but I'm having to much much playing with it at the moment. LOL
Also, I really appreciate you taking the extra time to show how far a little reverb and delay can expand the sound possibilities with these older rhythm machines.
So in many ways you can create specific beats. So it is "kinda" programable in an analog sort of way? I just bought one to go with future home recordings I'm going to make as well as some classic rock covers. Sounds great!
The sounds in these older 70s machines are SO much better than those overhyped 80s machines that everyone obsesses over. Warm and thick and woody.

Thank you for this great, in-depth review! I really like that sound from 22:20 to 22:26.

$50 to $150? I watched these for a number of years and never saw a working one going for less than $400 -$800...
