I'm a 61 yo life long athlete who is still going strong with MTB, running, swimming and gymnastics rings. I retired at 57 after a wonderful career in the corporate world in several companies that gave me all the freedom to have a great life (lived in many countries) and enjoy PLAYING sports, among other passions with my family; especially my wife. I met many people like Dean Karnazes who got obsessed with one thing in particular to "MAKE A LIVING" and lost track of living to the point that they showed all the telltale sings of OCD. Today as a retiree the longest and most incredible run I'm still on is my 36 year marriage and a 61 year adventure with my mind and body.

I'm 62 and after 30 yrs of running and the past 10 yrs of Ironman I was thinking I should drop down to half marathons and half Ironmans.......
I've listened to my body all these years and it's been very good to me......
I'm still in great fitness shape with no major injuries so why slow down now?
I'm think of finding my Ironman #8 for Fall 2023!
    Thanks Dean!

I praise you for listening to your body. There's a tendency to overtrain. It is better to undertrain and focus on rest, recovery, and play. Overtraining amounts to diminishing returns and reaching peaks. No, you don't have to slow down as long as you allow yourself plenty of time to heal.

This is amazing Marco. I enjoyed every second of this. This really helped me out on a day where I was truly feeling a lot of anxiety surrounding multiple things you both touched on… pain, dealing with loss, & not knowing where I’m going as I reach my 30’s. So much of this resonated with me. Today is actually 1 year since my Grandmother passed away. It’s been one of the toughest years of my life. I was actually writing a memorial post as you asked the question about loss… it was powerful. As someone who has always been battling with my faith, it’s those type of moments that make me have real hope, even if some may say it’s just a coincidence.

I've been running all my life and I can tell you this guys achievements are staggering even if he's being modest. However as a runner approaching 50, probably the least impressive in all of this is actually the thing which probably draws the most views, his age. Honestly the way this guys has looked after himself, his age is almost of no consiquence, he would need to be another 25 years older for that to be a signficant factor. Sure your running may slow down when you get older but not the distance and for the majority of people who are not elite athletes, it's not unsual to set PBs (or Personal Records if you're from the US) well into your 40's and 50's, and that's exactly what I'm doing right now.
