When Conan said his body is remarkable, it quite literally is - his body is capable of processing lactic acid (what makes you feel sore after working out or running for a while, in basic terms) almost as soon as it appears. He literally doesn't get tired like almost every other human does
I met him in person @ USAF Marathon in Dayton OH, Which boosted my morale after he said Good Luck and Dig Deep. I ran 2:42;16 Half-Marathon. Thank U Dean. I improved from my first 1/2er by 20min.
Anyone who runs a marathon before breakfast gets my respect. I'm shooting for 20 miles a WEEK for one year (1000 miles) and it's very difficult to keep the consistency going.
Some people are saying, oh he isn't the fastest marathon runner, or someone else ran this many, etc. What they didn't mention is he also runs to the marathon. Say his hotel is 20 miles form the marathon site, he runs there and back, so not only the marathon but 40 miles back and forth to the hotel. He also ran 350 miles in 80 hours without stopping and without sleeping, has run in Death Valley, ran a marathon at the south pole in -25 degree weather. The point of the the 50/50/50 thing is running a marathon in every state in 50 days. In some cases he ran the actual organized marathon on the marathon day (NYC), at other times he ran the official marathon course but not on the race day because the actual race day didn't fit in with his schedule, like the Boston Marathon, and the guy was 44 when he did this. And after he finished it all up in NYC, he was going to run back to San Francisco, but cut his run short in Missouri. I don't think he claims to be the fastest or best, but he does keep going and is pretty awesome.
Go to any large marathon and you'll see obese finishers, many with good times under 4 hours. It's very common to gain bodyfat during marathon training. It's a myth that exercise prevents obesity when there's a surplus of cheap, high-calorie food available.
Tarahumara (mexico's mountainous tribal clan) record is 435 miles in 2 days. Dean's record is not the best. He definitely beats me and many others, but to put him on the pedestal in mainstream media saying he is the best long distance runner isn't truth.
+mauimystic Like most 'records' in western society, only something recorded by some western authority is considered the truth but thanks to people like Christopher McDougall at least awareness of the reality of things is being brought out.
i remember following Dean on a web app called "Where's Karno?" at that time. I think he quit his trip across America half way through and took a flight home.
"I'm not bright" says the successful business man. BTW Conan needs to let the man talk, everyone knows a successful host is only supposed to talk about 10-20% of the time and let the guest speak the rest.
LiftOrGTFO yea I didn't love the interview either. However, in Conan's defense, the crowd didn't seem to be loving Dean and I think he felt the need to fit jokes in and keep the mood up. Late night interviews aren't meant to be sober or serious. They need laughs or oohs & aahs and for some reason it wasn't getting the latter.
I don't see him calling other people names and providing no facts to back it up. I hope I am not just feeding a troll right now because it sure seems like I am...
Well what you say with regards to cortisol cannot be correlated as fact for everyone. I would be sure the body even has an adaptive response to that. If running too much does damage the body then Dean Karnazes is not proof of that thus making the statement false imo.
Did he really or was that humour value ? What about the death of Micah True ? None of this puts me off doing what i love, basically been exercising for 5 hours this morning and feeling fantsatic !!
What are you on ? I was only referencing a recent study, this is considered 'fradulent' to you to do this ? Hmm, ok...Then nice world you live in. If you truly lack the intelligence to look this up for yourself then i will be more than happy to oblige.

How are your goals going?
@@lonegymnast did over 600 miles, never reached 1000. Nice thing about goals though is that you can always reset them again.
@@wordpressobsessed9067 yeah good luck on your next one
@@lonegymnast hi
@@wordpressobsessed9067 hows it going now?

@@simonvance8054 definitely interesting. I would love to chat with you all
hands down all time fav runner interview!
yaa I ll run back to LA to see my family, then run down to NY and get one of my fav delis, then catch a movie in Texas lol
Irony is that he did it to raise awareness of childhood obesity. Too bad his big moment to mention it was eclipsed about him eating pizzas
if he really had intension to raise that awereness, i don"t believe he would eat pizza on that day
If you workout and burn calories you do deserve some pizza
@@fantasyteamshorts6112 yeah man lol

Red Born to Run and you'll see why so many people in the Ultrarunning community don't like Karnazes.
Scott Jurek ftw.
THIS IS A HUGE STEP OF HUMAN EVOLUTION HE BETTER PROCREATE FUCKER!!!!
Have a nice day !
He's referring to a review article called "Potential Adverse Cardiovascular Effects From Excessive Endurance Exercise".
there's no way anyone could ever eclipse 50 marathons in 50 days
Iron Cowboy: hold my beer
They are both remarkable
Anon
Iron Cowboy might be on gear just like Lance Armstrong was!

Great respect for this man!!
But when it comes to ultramarathon , Giannis Kouros is the man, without a doubt.

LiftOrGTFO i wonder how he became so successful
Cool, i'd like Dean's view on the latest study that long term endurance exercise damages the heart. ?!
Doubt it
Or the more frequent cause, overeating and never leaving the couch
This guy's skull is so angular, you could call him Protractor Head
And what is 'excess' ? What is 'excessive' for one may not be for another ? I say do what you enjoy, life is too short to hold back imo.

Yes i have one, do you ?
why is that?
Plzzzzz tell me DEAN HAS KIDSSSSS
I'm an aspiring ultra runner myself so i have noticed the longer you go the slower you go. Your argument is not valid as it's not based on reality.
this is nothing compared to anette fredskov she did a year straight
stiggyh OH.MY.FUCKING.GOOOOOSH!!! Where the HELL do these people come from? They're aliens!!
