- Screenflow 10: How To Remove Video Backgrounds without using Green Screens
This tutorial will show you how to remove the background from your video in Screenflow 10 without the need for using Green (or Blue) Screens. This feature is new for Screenflow 10. To remove the background, you must select a clip with a Camera Recording (not a Screen Recording for example).
Tip: Good lighting and contrast between you and the background will produce better results. For example, if you have a white wall behind you, where a solid color shirt.

You are welcome and you too! 👍✌
Top class and thank you so much
You are welcome! 👍
Hi Mike, thanks for you video. Any idea why the recording from the built-in cam auf my 2021 Macbook Pro is automatically blurred in screenflow? When i just start a webcom view app its not blurred.
Thank you very much
You are welcome! 👍
Many thanks, really helpful. Question? How To Remove Unused Media in Screenflow 10?
Glad it helped! This video is for Screenflow 8, but it is a similar process in Screenflow 10:

Great video mike but my version of Screenflow 10 (Mac) only shows chromakey, it doesn't show 'automatic'. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
You will only see 'Chromakey' if you are selecting a 'Screen Recording' clip.
If you select a 'Camera' clip (webcam, DSLR, etc), then you should see both Automatic & Chromakey. 👍
Good video Mike, but I'm having trouble with the quality on this. I use a real green screen right now. I have lots of lighting set-up and it works great. When I use the same lighting and remove the background, parts of my head and body sort of disappear as if shadowed. Any thoughts on how to fix this? Again, the lighting works great on a regular green screen. Thanks.
Hey Dave!
The Chroma Key in Screenflow should give you pretty good results when using good lighting (which you noted you are). The Screenflow Chroma Key is not as high quality as After Effects + Premiere or FCPX but not that bad.
Are you selecting Chroma Key or Automatic? Have you tried clicking on the color swatch and selecting different sections of the green screen or adjust the white clip and tolerance? Is the green screen itself evenly lit without too many shadows?
What camera are you using?
Happy to help troubleshoot further 👍
@@MikeMurphyCo Thanks for the response. Sorry, let me be more clear. I am perfectly happy with my green screen and chroma key but I have to go out to a studio on my property to record. You can look up my channel to see if need be.
So I want to do away with my green screen completely and just record in my office. So I tried the automatic remove background with the same lighting and the quality is not good. I’m using a logitech 920. Do I need a better camera? What do you think? What am I missing? Thanks Mike.
@@DaveAllredTheRealBarman Ah, got it. I think the 'Automatic Background' is more of a convenient feature in Screenflow similar to how Zoom removes backgrounds in that it's better than nothing but not nearly as good as using an actual green screen. If you had access to another camera, it may be worth testing (the Logitech Brio is 4K and a significant improvement IMO to the C920) , but I would also do my best to create as much contrast between you and the background. Wear a solid-colored shirt, make sure the lighting is still good, and keep the background very simple (all white or solid color would be best) to improve the cutting out of the background.
Much is just trial and error and trying new angles, lighting, etc and hopefully you can get it to a quality that works for you.
FYI, Elgato makes an awesome, portable/collapsible green screen in case that helps. : amzn.to/3lzkike

@@MikeMurphyCo Thanks Mike. Very helpful.
@@DaveAllredTheRealBarman You bet! 👍
Hi, great vídeo! However, How can I take away the Flickering around my hair ? Could you show where do you put the lights? I read you use a aputure 120d. You use only one light? Can you reduce those flickering around the (Shiny) hair with a ring light?
The camera + lighting is the key to removing the green screen. It can be challenging to get a good clean chroma key. I use the 120D as my key light with a couple of accent lights. I do not use Green screen that often. The goal is to get even lighting without harsh shadows on the green screen. 🍀
@@MikeMurphyCo Thanks Mike, I don't use green screen. I want to use only background removal. My question was regarding how to avoid filming myself in order to avoid my hair "shining" and disturbing the background removal. Could you please be more specific regards where you put the lights, and how many? thanks a lot again
@@liaperu9380 Hi there, I would like to help you, but not sure I understand your question about avoiding filming yourself and the shining hair issue.
What does your setup look like? What type of lights are you using? What camera do you use?
The background removal effect will do a ‘decent’ job, but it will not be perfect. The more light and contrast the better. Try to wear solid colored clothes that stand out from the background. If you are getting shine on hair, then move the lights around and keep experimenting. It often takes a lot of trial and error, but keep trying. 👍
I only have chroma key as an option, not automatic. Any idea why?
You have to select a clip that was recorded with your webcam or DSLR, etc. 👍🍀
@@MikeMurphyCo aha! That’s a shame! I had an iPhone screen recording that has a white background. Any idea how I may remove that?
@@DemiGodsMusic did you try using the Chroma Key option and select the white?
@@MikeMurphyCo unfortunately there’s no option for that, and it would remove other whites in the main picture too. Thanks though!
Something is not working. I have tried different lighting & these ia still background right around my head.
In most cases, it comes down to the lighting and quality of your camera to 'remove the background' in video. What camera are you using?
@@MikeMurphyCo The iSight cam on my 2017 iMac.
@@IndianaGraphics In most cases, the better the camera and lighting, the better the results, so keep experimenting with the lighting and angles is all I can suggest. 🍀
@@MikeMurphyCo Mind if I ask what camera you use?
@@IndianaGraphics I use a Canon M50 DSLR Camera and a Logitech Brio 4K Webcam. For lights I use the Aputure 120D.
