The vintage Canon lens looked slightly to have the edge but both have character. This was honestly one the best produced videos I've ever seen on RUclips, really enjoyable 👌
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching. I had a ball putting this together. I am contemplating a series of classic movie videos... only time and money standing in my way! 😂
I'd say the 8 blades in the Canon take it over the 6 of the Minolta, especially apparent towards the f15.6 and f8 mark ;) and allowing for the more buttery background in the wider apertures....I kinda wanted the Minolta to take the win just so I didn't have to say Canon but hey whatever, because the real winner was the viewer....what a thoroughly fun, fantastically produced piece of content Jim. Brilliantly thought through and put together. This was really entertaining - oh and your short (that I watch before coming here) was just a very funny 10 seconds of video too. Bravo.
Thank you. I fully expected to like the Minolta lens more! I was surprised by the final photos. This was very fun to put together. I might do another movie tribute in the future… Bond, Star Trek… there’s so many!
Best video yet Mr. Eastwood, by a vintage long shot. That was fantastic! You do absolute wonders with that green screen! Loved it. As far as the comparison goes, after looking at all of that bokeh, I've now gone cross eyed. Definitely different styles of bokeh given. I thought the Minolta was sharper in the foreground in some of the shots, but I could be wrong. Will have to watch again. Either way, both great vintage lenses. Fantastic video Jim,.well worth the wait for this one!
Jim you definitely put them through the test. I must say, I'm particularly partial to Canon but the match up was very interesting. Minolta really stood its ground.
@@VintageInsightPhotography maybe if you go into a comparision to Rokkor PF 50 1.4 or the PF 58 1.4 or even the legendary 58 1.2 youll go crazy about that magic creamy background Blur.
Great vlog Jim. I loved the Wild West theme, great job and very entertaining. I did notice that with the Minolta lens the bokeh seemed more hexagonal compared to those perfect circles of the Canon, is there any difference in the number of blades in the lenses? Both nice lenses but I think the Canon just edged it - as a Nikon shooter that was hard to say! I hope your drone is repairable, ouch!
Thanks, Andrew. I was fully expecting to like the Minolta lens better... but I'm thinking different now. I was going to ebay the canon lens after this video, but I think I'm keeping it! It should be a great macro and portrait lens. Drone has been replaced (cheaper than repair, plus there's a market for crashed drones... who knew?). I haven't flown the new one yet, maybe this week.
Awesome video! Looked like you had fun doing the western theme. I have some vintage Pentax and Minolta glass. Just started to use them more on my DSLR. Enjoyed the simple comparisons you made! Sad about the drone :c Channel is great!
Well well Jim, you were right ... its is a good vid, loads of fun , love the sound effects but I'd say the canon did take the better pic, love the costume at the beginning 😁
I love a good Western - the dollar trilogy and Once upon a time in the west especially. I preferred the smoother bokeh of the Minolta lens. I do miss those wide apertures - the widest lens I own is an f/4, a trade off to minimise the number of lenses that cover the zoom range I shoot at.
This. Was. Ingenious! Great drone work (sorry it crashed) great sound (sorry about the sad story 😞) great subjects (they were so good at holding a pose) great photos (I think I liked the Canon better?) great music choices that went along great with the theme and the role you played. AND great green screen work! Very fun vlog to watch more than once❣️
You Sir (capital 'S'), are a fool. I truly appreciate your foolishery. Thank you for an interesting review. It just so happens, I have a few Minolta primes which I am taking on vacation with me - 58mm f1.2, f1.4 - 50mm f1.7 and several others. I have compared the Canon 55mm f1.2 vs the Minolta 58mm f1.2 and can attest to the Canon's harsher bokeh - it renders edges and outlines a bit harsher than the Minolta. Having said that, it is nice to have proof of thought about some of these lenses. Enough of that - I shall click the 'Subscribe' button now!
Thank you. Glad you appreciated my attempt at humor. 🥸 That Minolta 55mm f/1.7 has incredibly creamy bokeh. The Canon 55mm f/1.2 is definitely smoother than the 50mm SSC I tested last year. Your Minolta 58mm f/1.2 sounds like it would be an ideal portrait lens for an APSC sensor camera. Thanks for watching!
Is the Minolta Rokkor at f15.6 a real aperture or is that a bit of pedant comment bait 😉 Great video you certainly put the work and $ into that video 😃
@@VintageInsightPhotography yeah they were really good, I think I don't have a single canon vintage lens though...I have 2 Minolta 50mm 1.4 and 58 mm 1.4
@@RajKarma I’ve been seeking out vintage Olympus Zuiko lenses lately. Beautiful sharpness and bokeh. Plus they are better sized for my Fujifilm camera. Highly underrated lenses.

What a fun video! Both lenses performed really well and you really put them through their paces with testing all those apertures.
Thanks Dave. It was quite a production got sure! Glad you liked it.

Thanks so much, Paul. Most work I've ever put into a video before. I shot those final scenes today!

Thanks. I was expecting to have a strong preference for the Minolta lens, but that Canon really impressed me. Thanks for watching!

Thanks so much! This video was definitely a labor of love. Canon, Minolta, Olympus, and Vivitar in my collection. Love that vintage glass!
Great video and a great comparison between those lovely little lenses!
Thank you! I really do enjoy shooting with vintage glass.
@@VintageInsightPhotography I've made a few vintage glass videos..why not check them out?
Great video. I loved The Good The Bad and The Ugly! And you actually do sorta look a little like Clint! I prefer the Canon look!
Thanks Howard. Glad you enjoyed it.
I love a good shootout and this was a good one. Most enjoyable.👍👍
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it! 🤠
I also like old lenses. Great video! Love both lenses.

No idea why someone would give this a 👎. 🤷
Another Lens shoot out between Canon & Minolta, My money is on the Canon! the largest canon brand in the world. Thanks for sharing Jim!
Thanks, Tony. Planning the video, I fully expected to prefer the Minolta, but after seeing the photos, I’m preferring the Canon.
Nice comparison video, love the Western theme :)

Does your Canon FL 55mm copy have a stop at f1.7? Mine goes from 1.2 to 2
There is a stop between f/1.2 and f/2.0. I assume it's f/1.7, bit it's not marked with a number, just a dot.
@@VintageInsightPhotography thanks yeah I notice that now, seems like there's also an unmarked f-stop there for the 35mm f/2.5 between f/2.5 and f/4
why not Minolta 58mm 1.2?
Because I don’t have one ? 🤔
