  • Prior to the start of the 1979 NFL season, longtime Minnesota Vikings quarterback Bob Lee was cut by the team on bad terms. Four months later, after signing with the Los Angeles Rams, Lee is asked to come off of the bench against his old team and guide them to a spot in the postseason. What happens next is one of the greatest moments of Lee's career, and one of the best pieces of revenge in NFL history

You forgot to mention that a couple of weeks earlier Lee came off the bench again had one throw and beat the 49ers with a bomb as the game was winding down. It is still one of the best long balls I've ever seen. You should do an episode on that because without Bob Lee in 1979, the Rams don't go to Super Bowl 14. Hell without Bob Lee the Rams don't make it to the playoffs and dont with their 7th straight division title. This man deserves much respect.

As a Vikings fan I absolutely hated Bob Lee, he was just so gruesome to watch. Every movement he made just looked so awkward and strange, Icobod Crane. Just was not aesthetically pleasing, all arms and legs and windup.

Of note is that the week before, Lee also came off the bench after Ferragamo got hurt and fired the game winning TD pass to Ron Smith to beat the 49ers in another must win situation. The Saints had the Rams on the ropes all season, and with injuries badly crippling them, the Rams probably do not even make the playoffs without Lee and instead, the Saints win the division and make their first ever playoff appearance, 8 years early.

Remember this game so well. And considering all the heartache we suffered because of the Purple during the 70s, the way we won this on a fake FG run by Nolan Cromwell in OT was incredibly sweet.

The Rams looked like they would finally go all the way in 1979, culminating a great run as a powerhouse team during the 1970s. The Nolan Cromwell TD was what made the headlines in this game. I didn’t even realize Bob Lee (19) was in this game. Good story.

The drama of the 1978 Rams preseason would be a good topic on this program.

Viking fan here since 1969. While I have no animosity towards Bob Lee at all, he was given every opportunity to win the job as a starter, and he failed every time. Grant gave him the start in 1971 vs the Cowboys in the playoffs, and he was atrocious. Cuozzo had to come in to move the team, and that tells you how bad Lee was. After Tarkenton got hurt in 1977, Lee was the starter, but was stinking it up against the 49r's. Kramer came in and led the Vikings to a win in a miraculous comeback 28-27 after being down 24-0. Lee was a steady backup, but could never claim the starter role.

Ken Clark only played that one season because he wasn't a very good punter, he punted 93 times that one season for an average of 40.1 yards. In Week 9, a 20-14 home loss against the Giants he completed his first NFL pass, it went for 2 yards. His career passing stat line was 2 Completions in 2 Attempts for 32 Yards, a 100% Completion Percentage, 0 TD's and 0 Int.'s for a QB Rating of 118.7, unfortunately he attempted 1498 less passes to qualify as a career leader.

Great video, thanks as ever. You should do an excellent vid about Kapp of the Vikings and why Jim Finks turned against him after being his champion, and how it wrecked Kapp and the franchise, and how many times since that the Vikings have hung #11 on a QB to try and fix the unfixable karma. Had they given Kapp a new three-year deal in '70, they never need Fran, and probably win a Super Bowl or two. I think the NFL film More Than A Game (1970) and Sports Illustrated criticism of coach Grant in the Super Bowl (summer 1970) contributed to Finks' desire to excommunicate Kapp..

@@nala3038 really? Had they Kapp in 1970, for example, they could have defeated San Francisco and Dallas, and faced the Colts. They suffered in 70 and 71 from having no offense punch at all, yet the league-leading defense. They missed the playoffs entirely in 1972. All of these seasons with Kapp would have put them deep into playoffs and NFC Championship range, and a shot a numerous SBs prior tp the Tarkenton era, which existed because they had no QB after Kapp. Outside of "are u kidding" do you have anything else to offer at all?

    • @TruthSeeker-ho6hn

Your right Gilbert. As a pro AFL 14 year old, I knew the Chiefs only defeated the Vikings because they were super inspired to avenge their one sided defeat in Super Bowl I and it was the AFL's last hurrah before the merger. 1970 was the Vikings Super Bowl season until Jim Finks went into some kind of bizzarro world. I thought the Vikings would wake up and sign Joe Kapp, until the news came out that he finally signed with the Boston Patriots. Boston had the Curse of the Bambino, now the Vikings have a Curse for screwing over Joe Kapp.

Sounds like the script the Rams used in 95 to get rid of Jerome Bettis, yet The Bus was pulled in the third quarter of his first game against the Rams by Coach Cowher because he had over 100 yards and two TD's in the third quarter as his emotions lead the Steelers to a 42-6 BLOWOUT against the Rams that said Jerome was NOT a game-changer and was basically washed up.

Not as great as Superbowl XVI, although it was between coach and owner. In 1982 Bill Walsh's 49ers beats Paul Brown's Bengals 26-21. In 1975 when owner Paul Brown retired as head coach and picked the Bengals' next head coach he picked OL coach Tiger Johnson instead of Bill Walsh, who had close relationship with Brown and thought he was most likely to be picked. Walsh left embittered but got his revenge later.

I absolutely remember that game it was opening day 1969. The Game was on TV and the Vikings had a comfortable lead. We went out to a drive thru fast food restaurant and I listed in horror on the radio as my Vikings lost that game in the last minute. Actually Gary Cuozzo was the stating QB for the Vikings that day. The following week Joe Kapp returned as the starter and the Vikings ran off 12 consecutive wins. Unfortunately the season ended in a devastating loss to a 14 point underdog KC Chiefs team. Life SUCKS!!

Ferragamo was never a good quarterback, that super bowl year was because of Pat Haden.

general bob lee. qb'd vikes and falcons before becoming another of the plethora of qb's rams used in the '70's. That's why they never won a s b in the '70's. And general bob lee would probably get cancelled by the cancel culture idiots today.

Lee was garbage. Vikings defense carried that franchise between Kapp and Tarkenton’s return back to the Vikings.

I grew up in South Dakota and Lee just wasn't up to standard for a Vikings quarterback. Vikings were never big enough to beat the AFL teams. Always better than the Rams!

@@okd521 maybe I should of rephrased him as a player. He wasn’t garbage if he lasted in the nfl so long but he wasn’t good enough to be a starter.
