  • Building the Ultimate Grid Down Travel Vehicle: Honda XR650L Project
Join me as I build what I hope will be the ultimate vehicle for grid down travel. He has chosen the reliable Honda XR650L as the foundation for this ambitious project. With minimal electronics, no fuel injection, and air cooling, this motorcycle is designed to be dependable and resilient in any situation.
The Honda XR650L is known for its relatively light weight and small size, making it extremely mobile across almost any terrain. It's also highly fuel-efficient, which is crucial when resources are limited. Jason's goal is to create a motorcycle with extended range and SHTF (Sh*t Hits The Fan) capabilities, tailored for prepared citizens looking for a dirt bike dual sport on a budget. This bike meets all of those criteria perfectly.
Follow along as Jason transforms the Honda XR650L into the ultimate bug-out bike, ideal for any survival scenario.

Mobility is life! XR650L Review. First few hundred miles on the bike. Mixed on road and off. So far, the bike is performing very well in its stock form. There will be some modifications done to the bike to make it more capable such as off-road tires, handlebar risers, skid plate, and a larger fuel tank.

Is this a good alternative source of transportation? What do you guys think? Off road capability, fuel efficiency, reliability?????

I have an '08 I bought in '18. Does not get much use as I have a fleet of purpose built modern bikes. But, I will say if SHTF then it would probably be the one that last/run the longest.

I thought for sure you would have gotten the Kawasaki KLR650 Diesel Motorcycle…. Then you could have converted it to run on the same fuel as the truck…

I still want one too. The Goldwing is too heavy for the Forest Service roads even though she has been down several.

To be fair the Honda has DOT road approved tires

Yep and they are not aggressive enough for real off-road riding. They will work on dirt roads for sure.

How is 1st gear? To high or low? I had a 2018 KLR650 it wasn't quit what I wanted. I like all the things you mentioned about your bike.

I haven’t done any technical off roading yet so I can’t say for sure. But, first gear might be a bit high for the slow, tight, rough trails. It can however cruise at highway speed all day. That is the trade off. Depending on the application and type of riding that I’m going to be doing, I might gear it down just a bit.
