Meso-Polyrhythms

- Overlapping clock divisions can create changes in a patch that are not just different rhythms for note events. These changes take place in the "meso" time scale, and when they work within and through each other they can be considered to be "meso-polyrhythms."
The more meso scale movements we add to the patch, the harder it gets to hear the effects of each one. Check out the video "Sculpting Time with a Modular Synth" for some thoughts on larger structures. • Sculpting Time with a ...

Okay, so now we need a Star Trek episode where the chief engineer breathlessly exclaims “That’s it! We just need to destabilize the repetitions of the mesopolyrhythm!” and that turns out to be what saves the ship. I am also willing to accept that the navigation and/or engineering consoles are stacked Shared System/TMMSen, but only if you all in Asheville get a really good royalty clause in the contract.
Hahaha, I'll subscribe to CBS Online or whatever it is if they do that.
I've consistently seen how you/makenoise use Curtis' text, and the theories of microsound to create and educate, which is amazing. I must say that after going over the actual text myself, I strongly disliked it, because of its lack of actual, LISTENABLE examples and real world connections. The education you guys are doing really fills a big gap in synthesized based music. MEGA KUDOS...
It would be amazing to see you in the future discus / create sound objects described by Curtis like Glissons, pulsars, trainlets, etc.
You guys rock, cheers =)
Hey thanks for watching! For a more broad look at music with Roads' perspective check out his "Composing Electronic Music: A New Aesthetic" which branches out a lot and includes many sound examples from other composers. "Listenable" is still subjective, of course, it's mostly in the "academic electronic music" realm. But there's some great stuff to learn and hear in there, in my opinion. For a look at glissons, pulsars etc. in our system, check out the video "Microsound Workshop" here: ruclips.net/video/qQUrSh9wzs0/видео.html
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC Amazing! thnx!
This was a really smart one, and a great way of showing how a lot of these modules work together. A+ good sir.
Thanks Wray!!
Loving these chats, excellent work 👏🏻 🔥 👏🏻
Thanks, glad you enjoy them!
I really enjoyed this, thanks for taking the time to put it together :D
Glad you enjoyed it!
that was very clear and helpful understanding some(previously) diffuse concept
Glad to hear it!
That's another fine meso!
Thanks for watching!!
was literally just now fiddling with a new polyrhythm-cenrric synth from another lovely synth company and wondering "I know there's some way to do this with modules, but" and here we are. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Lots of cool ideas here :-) Thanks! Nice books too
Thanks!
Ha! Saw you using X-CV Pot/Y-CV Pot. Those are two of my favorite performance controls when using ADD or LOC inputs on René 2. Thanks for a fantastic video!
Thanks, mine too!
Brilliant ! I'm learning so much which will help me to know more about Modular Synthesis. It's very frustrating when I have modules but don't know what needs to be patched into what. 💡
Thanks for watching! Glad it was helpful : )
it must be fun to know what youre doing!
Brilliant🦑
Great introduction! I was wondering if Tempi can set various gate lengths?
Only 50% clocks, or 10ms triggers. Otherwise patch it through MATHS for variable/VCable width.
Polyrhythms are my fav.
You're not alone there!!
Love you guys ! Are those t-shirts available somewhere ?
I believe they are sold out but we are often adding new shirts at makenoisemusic.com/adjuncts
Thanks for another really interesting and engaging snapshot. Just wondering if you think of meso-polyrhythms as the same as the same as isorhythms?
First of all, i'd note that meso-polyrythm is just a term i made up for this video and it's possible, even likely, that there is already an existing term for it. That said, in response to your question I would say maybe not, because I understand isorhythm to refer to a repeated rhythmic pattern among note events, and as I'm using it here, the "meso-rhythm" is affecting something other than individual note events and on a time scale longer than single note events. The repetition of isorhythmic patterns of a length different from the meter of the piece, could have some relation to what i called "meso-polyrhythm" in terms of differing/overlapping phrase lengths, but I would also consider my "meso-rhythm" to be broader, as it could be applied to any meso-scale change such as periodic transposition, timbral shifts, shifting clock divisions, turning echoes on and off, etc. Hopefully that answers the question?
This reminds me of those class action lawsuit commercials: "If you or a loved one is suffering from meso-polyrhythms, you may be entitled to compensation..."
Sounds delicious
Hopefully it is!
I’d give a thumbs up just for the Flava Flave shot.
Flavor Flav is in everything you eat! Cause everything you eat's got flavor...
Love your work!! Thx for making these vids.
If my loops are no longer looping whatve they become, wait, what I’ve become...
Hmmm, let us know if you find out!
wait why is the X channel of Rene right when you hook it up playing non linear rhyhtms? Do you have some gates un-selected in Rene? or is something happening with Tempe's channel 1?
Yes, it is due to the Gate programming for the X Channel.
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC thank you for your reply and all these awesome videos :)
This is almost magic lol. Do you teach this stuff on the side? Can i pick your brain for a couple of hours? :D
0:50 was hilarious ahahahaha

Super quick thing: try to hang some thick fabric in the rooms corners. Sometimes your voice struggles to stay above the rooms ambient reverberation. It might be your style though, so... don't mind me. Just my 2 cents.
Thanks for the suggestion! Always trying to improve :)

Dude, did you take a couple of drinks before shooting..? 🍸
Nope. Did I seem like I did? Last week I had a lot of comments (on "Noise Floor of the Universe") jokily implying I was on drugs, which I also was not, haha.
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC Facial expresssions looked a bit sluggish, other than that it was fine... 😊 No offence. Thinking maybe you guys had a drink session after work, in the office. All good 🍻
Notations 21!
That one took me years to track down!
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC Santa Monica Public Library has a copy. Beautiful book! I think they have Curtis Roads too, but only for reference material (that could be LA public Library though)
I have no idea how you know what you are doing.
"How" or "whether?" :P
Years of practice, concentration, and enthusiasm :)
I was sure you were referencing Ligeti and not Flavor Flav. You made me lol. But a metronome is not a clock.
