Setlist: • Highway Star • Nobody’s Home • Strange Kind of Woman • A Gyspsy’s Kiss • Perfect Strangers • Under The Gun • Lazy • Knocking At Your Back Door • Solos • Space Truckin’ • Woman From Tokyo • Black Night • Smoke On The Water
Purple is still great. Just heard them 8 months ago with "songs that built rock". Gillan was in amazing vocal form, the best I`ve heard from him in many years. The rest of the band played superbly. Bananas is one of Purples best albums. Deep Purple is still Deep Purple. I`m sure Jon Lord would agree. R.I.P., Jon, the best rock organist ever and a wonderful person.
Jon Lord most often played a specially customised Hammond C-3. Heavy beast for the crew to move lol. I grew up learning on an X77 and it didn't like being moved lol. Cheers.
Watching this footage, I still marvel over the fact that 'Perfect Strangers' was basically a reunion album. Can anyone remember the last "reunion" album that was worth anything more than the vinyl it was pressed on? Not me! Despite the complaints about Ian's voice, I think he held it together pretty well here. Thank you for posting!
Couldn't agree with you more. I have seen Deep Purple 4 times in my life. The first time was when they opened for Rod Stuart and the Faces in 1970 and they blew the place apart! Very sad to hear about Jon Lord passing and I don't care what anyone says, Blackmore is the greatest rock guitarist ever!
It's normal that Ian Gillan was not That good he was sick, but he still made the concert... The singers of today if break a nail don't go to the stage, so Ian Gillan deserves all the credit.
And yet even on a bad night, he sounds so much better than so many singers...and without auto-tune and other effects,,,wish I could sound half as good as he does here!
Saw Deep Purple that summer in Wisconsin in the 10th row. Ritchie and Jon were amazing as always and the rest were on fire too. Gillan's voice was good when I saw them but the show must go on regardless.
Que formação clássica!! valeu Thijs3FM por ter enviado essa preciosidade!!show show..... a banda totalmente afinada..mais um grande show no rockpalast.
Thank you very much for putting this concert in one piece. Never had the chance to watch it. I think the way it was recorded contributed with Gillan's "bad" night. There's something not quite right with the sound overall. Both channels seemed to be unbalanced and some sounds falling between them, thus fading. Anyway, this is a great concert with something for everyone. DP had this virtue of playing each gig in a different way, like our fingerprints. A true kick ass rock band!!
The solo that Blackmore pulls out at "Knocking at your back door" in this concert is absolutely one of his finest of all time. Ian Gillan is singing is still with a lots of feel sensibility & power, despite the cough.
If someone, anyone, could please find a live show from Perfect Strangers on through to today where Gillan isn't sick, drunk, tired or pissed off and could actually deliver, we'd all appreciate it.
JTA 1973 you know that's a good point, I saw this tour in Long Beach in California and it just so happened Ian Gillan with gloriously magnificent I expected it to suck so I know there's footage out there where he didn't snort too much cocaine off a stripper's ass
The band stopped for two maybe three nights in Dallas Tx on this tour(Reunion Arena). They returned latter in the tour to headline the 85 Texas World Music Festival (Cotton Bowl) I saw the Cotton Bowl show...loved the band, but Jon Lord was the stand out. He used his old set up and was ROCKIN that consol BACK and FORTH ...never fell over. far well to a Master.
Highway Star, Nobody's Home, Strange Kind of Woman, A Gypsy's Kiss, Perfect Strangers, Under The Gun, Lazy, Knocking At Your Back Door, Difficult To Cure/Jon solo, Space Truckin', Woman From Tokyo, Black Night, Smoke On The Water.
Those were the days, companeros, ragazze, boys and girls of all ages. What matters me most, is the great Mr Jon lord behind the keyboards, especially the Hammond Organ. Without that, Deep Purple would never have been so deep. On the other hand, Jon Lord would never have developed without (t)his Opera cast. Or what do YOU mean?
He had a bad cold plus vocal nodes during this particular gig I ment. Sadly it was the only full lenght DP show from the 'Perfect Strangers' tour that has surfaced in pro-shot quality yet. He was struggling with the vocal nodes through this tour, and even for some time in 1987/88. Gillan cut down on the cigarettes and the hard booze during excessive touring after that, plus he sobered up when he was out of Purple. He var revitalised and sagn better when he came back in 1992/93. Sobered up.
Yes, Gillan was revitalised and happy when returning. Much more sober, yet not having the vocal range he used to, he still had a strong voice. The Stuttgart gig in 1993 is on of Purple's finest reunion-era moments I think. Blackmore and Gillan on top form, and the whole band too really. 'The Battle Rages On' album is fantastic. I won't even dare to think how it would have sounded with Joe Lynn Turner. He is an AOR singer, not a hardrock frontman like Gillan.
23 years is gone and Highway Star still the openning number Ian got right back in 1972 in Copenhagen that this number will be there openning number for years
Also Ritchie Blackmore never said that Gillan couldn't sing. He has been quoted many times praising his vocal talents. he didn't get on with him personally.
Some of the comments on here are so ignorant! Why do people always complain that Ritchie doesn't stick to the Rhythm parts as on the Albums, and his solos are too long! Unbelievable! Also Ian obviously has a cold so why complain about his voice? At least they didn't cancel!! It's a terrific performance despite this!
Jon Lord. Keyboard master. A rock legend, Him and Ritchie. The best keys guitar combination ever?
Yes, I guess, it's the best Keys Guitar Combination, FOREVER
ABSOLUTELY!!
yes they were, are and will be
Yes!
Ritchie and Jon most definitely, but there were moments with Tommy Bolin which were electrifying.

Great Work, Jon Lord!
You were the world's best Keyboardist/ Hammond C3 Player and will always be it, forever
R.I.P. Jon
I agree with you. This man formed Purple back in the day so in my opinion they were not appreciated as much as they should have been
B3 or C3?
Jon Lord most often played a specially customised Hammond C-3. Heavy beast for the crew to move lol. I grew up learning on an X77 and it didn't like being moved lol. Cheers.
according to Ronnie Woods brother Art ,they carried it on and off Ferries to gigs 1962-66
Ruhe in Frieden, Jon. Deine Musik war meine Jugendzeit.

YOU are right --Deep Purple is simply great and i will love them till i die . The whole band is amazing .
"Deep Purple" is playing freely on the rock music. A fabulous cocktail of rock, classical music and blues !!!

A reunion but you really can't go back. Still this version of the band will always be the best.
The band was on fire! Too bad Gillan was ill and couldn't deliver but hey, he tried! Well done, lads.
Ritchie, you are from the greatest guitarists of the world.
СВЕРХгруппа !Джон Лорд покинул нас рано...

saw them in 84 all original best show ever
I saw a show from this tour in Providence ,R.I. and Gillans voice was spot on . Child in time and all. Wasn't like that at this show.
Gillan's voice is shot ( not a spelling mistake), and Ritchie plays a terrific melodic sequence for three seconds during the solo.
De todas as fases da do Deep Purple está é nota 1000.
Thanks for the upload!!
OK! Great intro, regards & Best Wishes 2016 to Sarah, from Freddie & Cris, The Netherlands

Also Ritchie Blackmore never said that Gillan couldn't sing. He has been quoted many times praising his vocal talents. he didn't get on with him personally.
You re right. Blackmore influence is so great in rock history, in deep purple or rainbow!
3 solid, competent musicians. And Blackmore and Gillan.
@Ἀζᾶν - Obvious troll is obvious.
