    This is genius. The concept for this is truely amazing. Large scale long-range colonization project with restrictions like those in the Sojourn we absolutely require a ship like this. It reminds me of the Spirit of Fire from Halo but far more utilitarian. It feels like it is meant for larger scale colonization than anything else in sci-fi I can think of right now...

    One minor nitpick for the firewatch expedition: Why not aim for the furthest save target point with a Driftgate, to shorten the first leg of the journey?

    Forgive me if I missed this in the video - but what's the deal with when the station is under thrust?
    Does the drift based arti-grav kick in to counter the force or something?

    is it possible to construct a mobile, ship-based drift gate? even one that only allow microscopic teleportation would work wonders to the expeditiono fleet

    • @youtubepleb
      @youtubepleb 10 месяцев назад +2

      Technically, yes. But given how drift gates work, it’s not going to be as useful as you think. Check the Gate Couriers video since I am not up to explain how.

    • @MentalMallard28
      @MentalMallard28 Месяц назад

      In theory there's nothing stopping you, but drift gates are massive. You can't have like a half crescent drift gate, its got to be a full circle to go all the way around its projectile ship. That means you're building a ship with like two ships worth of negative space right down the middle, which tends to be a rather poor design choice in a warship. I could see some potential in a sort of space fighter carrier ship, with a fighter/longboat sized drift gate, used as an intra-system catapult.
      The visual of what is basically two CSV frigates welded to the sides of a small drift gate with racks of fighterboats and engines ringing the super structure would be incredible, especially if it could be quickly paired with the drift gate that launches it to provide the rapid establishment of a small drift lane into enemy space. You fire one into hostile territory and use it to basically guide in small allied warships with its driftgate to allow a flotilla to arrive in formation rather than spread out. Its a cool concept, but massed fighterboats is more of a Union doctrine than a Centran one, and not one that panned out over the war. If fighter based anti-warship torpedoes become a viable weapon (and their economy gets to a point they could sustain such a ship) I could see Union doctrine moving towards a more carrier group style layout. Cheap fighterboats able to cripple Centran warships at range with, projected far from the mothership via single gate catapult. Could be worth looking into, but the Union's no where near being able to develop such a purpose built warship so far outside of their current doctrine, and the CDF, Mericians, and Advarii have little interest, no need for, or lack the technology, respectively. [SPOILER WARNING] (Although, the Advarii are uniquely situated to such a role using their shipboard foundries to mass produce fliers and launch them far ahead of their ships with reverse engineered driftgate tech. Advarii fliers seem to have no delta V issues (at least within the nebula) so its possible they don't need to enhance their range, though perhaps using them to make up for their apparent low speed could work? It remains to be seen if Adavrii lightships are all that slow or if they were just spotted far out that once, and within Tantalus the field of battle is far smaller than in the nebula) [SPOILER WARNING END]
      Alternatively, I could see gravitic acceleration used as a weapon, with the continuously active field of drift acceleration resulting in far higher rate of fire compared to rail or coil. Effectively a ship sized spinally mounted machine gun, able to fire as fast as its loading system can maintain. You could use it as a rock thrower, with a small tender fleet of mining craft breaking asteroids into small chunks and launching them for effectively free. By parking it in an hostile system's asteroid belt, you could create a hail of rock and ice moving at subliminal velocity at an hostile power's encourage, preforming the space equivalent of suppressive artillery.
      Granted, the reason they don't is it's illegal. I recall some old lore short about gravitic weapons being against the space Geneva Conventions because you can use them to destroy a planets ecology, something thats very much not a good idea in Tantalus, where the cluster's economy is barely surviving without planet wide mass extinction event weapons.

    Absolutely love it. however ,I hate to be the critic, but I must question the use of the command center as a conference room. It is still a ship, and it needs constant operation and for officers on watch-duty not to be distracted from their tasks. Even if the ship is idle, intership communications, (in the case of spaceships) orbital adjustments and standard operation. A diplomatic conference wouldn't only disturb the on-duty crew, but potentially the conference as well.
    Still, love everything else about it.

  • @frankharr9466

    That is so cool.
    I am confused, though. I wonder if Down changes if you go from centriptal (centrufigal, whatever) to drift gravity.

    • @MentalMallard28
      @MentalMallard28 Год назад

      With the exception of the Huntress Class, every CDF warship is constructed with a vertical deck alignment, such that ‘down’ would be towards the main drive, and ‘up’ would be towards what appears to be the ‘forward’ prow of the ship. The centrifugal hab modules of the Tripathia class spin outwards from the center line of the ship when not under thrust, and when under thrust they are repositioned to aline with the deck orientation of the rest of the ship. With the exception of extreme emergency, I do t think there’s ever be a time when the centrifugal force of the habs would be used at the same time as the thrust gravity of the rest of the ship, so moving from one to the other would always be going from an area with gravity to one without, or vice virsa

      I don't remember why I wrote that anymore. The point was, what if they go from centripital to drift gravity? I think something's supposed to do that. Great, now I have to watch a really good video again. Thank you. I'm really going to enjoy it!

    This is a really good ship but if I was designing it I would make te bottom ring detachable and it would bassicaly be a finnished driftgate attached to the ship. No ikea building driftgates required😂.
