There's an actual deleted scene from "Alien" (1979) in which Ripley asks Lambert (the only other female crew member), if Lambert has ever had sex with Ash. Lambert anwers that Ash "never seemed interested". At that point they don't know Ash is an android, but Ripley likely asks as she suspects exactly that.
This conversation is actually included in the comic book of the film. I'm glad they kept free space sex out of the movie though. It would have seemed forced and cold; especially considering that most of the crew seem to have a slight dislike for each other. They are co-workers, nothing more.

In the movie novelization, there's some not-so-subtle hints that Parker and Brett are both attracted to Lambert. It's said that they "dream" about her while in hypersleep, and Parker sacrifices himself more directly attempting to save Lambert than the movie shows.

    • @robynn144

@@SFforlife Hi SFforLife. Well, you got "something" there. In film no. 2, "Aliens", the Weyland-Yutani company files for the late crew of the "Nostromo" is shown on a screen in the background (behind Ellen Ripley) in the board hearing scene, where Ripley losses her flight license. It is near impossible to make out in the original film, but with picture enhancement, you can see that Joan Lambert's original sex was male, but that it was changed at or before her birth. So Lambert's sex is "female (not natural)" . I guess her parents REALLY wanted a girl. So is Lambert transgender? Well, that depends entirely on how you want to interpret that odd piece of background information from "Aliens" (which they hardly could expect anyone to notice (or even see) when the film was released!) Is genetic manipulation possible in this SF future - to a degree that they can actually change a person's gender pre-birth?! If so, Lambert is really 100% female. In any event, her official name is "Joan", and she is clearly considered female by the "Nostromo" crew, although she comes off as a bit of a surly "Tomboy" in the beginning- Buit when the monster killing machine , she is the first to freak out and panic. I'd say Lambert IS a woman. We were not meant to read her file on the screen in "Aliens".

_Alien_ is one of those perfect blends of story, cast and director that results in a timeless movie that still stands today as one of the greatest movies ever made. I've seen it dozens of times over the years and it never fails to entertain.
The sequel _Aliens_ is also very good, though it is a very different kind of movie. Where the first one is more ambiance, suspense and terror (and a strange "lived in" realism rarely seen in Sci-Fi), the second one is more of a straight action movie. I love them both but appreciate them for different reasons. None of the other ones did anything for me.

I agree with you 100%. The sexual suggestion scene in Prometheus is so out of place and so distracting that it weakens that inferior film further. What is so great about the original Alien movie, a real masterpiece of sci-fi cinema, is its minimalism. A sex scene, even its suggestion, would have subtracted from the atmosphere of dread that it so expertly crafted in the first place, and also take away from its focus as well as from the character of Ripley.

dalitis dalitis I did think the scene in Prometheus that suggests it was pointless, but it wasn't that distracting. If anything I got a laugh out of it when he starts singing before it cuts away. As for the original Alien, I agree it really wouldn't fit the tone. Only way it could work in a movie like that is if the individuals involved are completely unaware of what's going on.

There is a subtext that sexual relationships occur on ships like the Nostromo and that sexual dynamics are different. In one scene the crew are sat at the galley dinner table and Parker says something along the lines of "The noodles are the only damn good things about this ship..." and pauses before glancing and grinning at Lambert before saying to her "But I know what I'd prefer to be eating." and Lambert coquettishly laughs and looks away. (and kind of adds colour to the scene where Lambert and Parker die together)
In a deleted scene, Ripley is talking to Lambert about her suspicions over Ash and she asks Lambert "Have you slept with him?" to which Lambert replies "No...he just doesn't seem interested." - it implies that Lambert has possibly tried & possibly so has Ripley. And there is that 'have they/haven't they?' air about Dallas & Ripley.

I like the film the way it turned out. There's no need to throw around sex carelessly. I like how the film gives maybe the feeling that Ripley and Dallas might be close friends, or maybe on the verge of having a more close relationship, but leaving it up to the auidence to think about. What is this horror on board the ship mean to not just the crews survival, but also their friendships or lack thereof towards one another? I like how the film doesn't step on anyone's toes here regarding the relationship of these two very important characters. Those of us who believe in more traditional morals, nor those out there who don't. Hence it is just good entertainment, without pushing an agenda, at least when it comes to those two characters and their relationship.

Aliens Director's Cut, Ripley was crushed when she was informed that her young daughter grew old and died while she floated in space for 57 years. That might also be why she later so connected with Newt.

I feel like if they'd left that scene in, they'd have undermined the relatability of the situation. Even if that kind of interaction will be common in future interstellar cargo ships, it's frowned upon in most work environments on present-day earth. The movie as is, depicts a team of coworkers dealing with a workplace disaster. That's a situation that most audiences can picture themselves in with their own coworkers. If you add a sexual component to the protagonists' professional relationship, you risk making it more difficult for audiences to mentally place themselves in the characters' shoes.

  • @SouthernStorm_

I've always had a feeling that there was something intimate beneath the surface between Dallas and Ripley as the film has subtle hints possibly implying it. But a sex scene wouldn't have furthered the plot in any significant way and the fact that we are left to speculate only adds a bit more mystique to the story. Ultimately, if there was a deeper relationship between the two then it was none of our business and it never really bothered me.

I'm not sure about the film but I'm sure the topic of sex between crew members was discussed in the novelisation by Alan Dean Foster (and it was the latter of the two approaches mentioned in the narration here that was the culture on ship).
A personal encounter scene could have worked as one of the central themes of Alien is of rape-horror with the Xenomorph itself representing a sexual predator threatening the crew irrespective of their gender. In the same way the chestburster is (in part) a perversion of human birth so was the killing of Lambert a metaphor of rape, although little is actually shown on screen. Consensual sex between Ripley and Dallas could have been used as a counterpoint to the viscous attacks made by the Xenomorph so I guess it could have worked but the actual presentation was probably more cerebral in the long run?
Thanks for another fascinating video :)

It’s interesting. There was definitely some kind of chemistry between Dallas and Ripley which is noticeable even though subtle mainly because Ripley has such a cold relationship with everyone else. Also if you factor in the extended version with Ripley finding cocooned crew and her brief conversation with Dallas in that moment it takes a different context.

Only Finalists and only under specific circumstances. Weaver was a main choice, but Ridley does a lot of testing to make sure someone is perfect for the role. The film is spot on as it is, even comparing the cinematic to the director's cut - everything that wasn't in the cinema release only weakens the film - especially the cocoon scene. One of the ways that Alien works best is that we're never formally introduced to the crew, we don't know anything about them or the dynamic between them... The first time we see them awake, we're literally a fly on the wall observing their sarcastic meal-time / post shower quips across the mess room table - a bit like arriving last at a pub, where everyone already knows each other. It makes the tension, loyalties and betrayals that develop in the film much more interesting - you're there, in the moment, experiencing the situation first hand instead and not knowing what to expect instead of just watching a group of people trudging through scenes recognizably 'in-character', unlike 'Aliens' where every one of the marines had an idiosyncrasy / stereotype spelled out at the beginning. Also, the structure of the film makes the finale all the more powerful and dark - one moment Ripley is care-free, pert and perky in her undies, stretching to flick controls on the shuttle consoles or on the ceiling, the next second her femininity - and the viewers arousal - is shocked back into its shell, as the alien appears... It's a pretty clever trick to tease you into letting your guard down, dig your fingernails out of your clenched palms... and then 'wham!', here we go again.

Wow, I gotta say this theory is absolutely fascinating. It always struck me as odd that the both of them were constantly antagonizing each other. I think the context of that particular scene was that Ripley was growing suspicious of Ash, perhaps beginning to suspect that something wasn't right about him... Granted her line of investigative questioning was strange and out of left field to say the least.

In the directors cut of Alien, Ridley Scott added some of the cut scenes back in. One of those scenes is Ripley asking Lambert if she had ever slept with Ash!, She said no. So there was free sex between the crew and in the some of the conversations Parker and Bret both make comments about not having access to the women as they are taken. Presumably Ripley with Dallas and Lambert with Cain. If you watch the directors cut and pay closer attention to the crews conversations that had nothing to do with the Alien, you pick up on all this sexual tensions that were there between the crew. Also the whole thing between Cain and Lambert also explains her extremely distraught feelings after his death and her dire concern about him when the face-huger was on him.
Come on guys, the proof of all of this is there if you just sit back and watch it carefully and pay attention the conversations and ignore the special effects and listen to them talk with each other. Watch the Directors cut of Alien that was done in 2003. Its all there, but some people just don't or can't tune into this kind of human interactions very well.

I think it would be the male gaze now, but it was brilliant.

I like the simpler story: everyone's a bit shitty cause they just want to go home, and everything goes to shit cause the corporate guy puts the crew in danger by bringing an alien onboard. It's perfect. Often sex scenes don't really add any value to the movie, especially for one like this where Ripley surviving the alien and invoking fear in the viewer is the focus of the movie, not the relationship of some crew members which wouldn't even really add much to the story. The old Bond movies got it right - just insinuate it happens but there's no real need to go into detail. After all, we're here for the action right? Movies that can't decide what they want to be simply suck because the whole time you're asking yourself 'is this an action, romance, comedy?' because they fit too many opposing genres. That's why old slashers were so corny, cause they're often romance and horror which is pretty gross when you think about it. Must be a fetish or some shit.

Veronica Cartwright (the actress who plays Lambert) was actually meant to play "Ripley", while the then less known actress Sigourney Weaver was initially cast as "Lambert". Wever's real official name IRL is actually Susan Weaver. Gimme me a thumbs up if you knew that piece of trivia guys!? :)
However, they switched that around at the last minute. Much to Cartwright's dismay. Which is understandable, and considering what a huge succes the franchise became, it must be bitter for Cartwright even today. Poor Veronica Cartwright. She is actually also a great actor and if you ask me, she was also kinda "hot" back in the day! :)

From the interactions we got, it seemed to me they'd had a physical but not romantic relationship, that was either over, or on hold. I also felt it likely Parker and Kane had both had some alone time with Lambert.
If it was a free sex environment, that would put a whole different spin on Ripley's "If you need me I'll be on the bridge" line, but the emotional energy among the crew doesn't really fit a free-sex environment, more like a rare occasion when boredom was high and two people were in the mood.
A sex scene would be a good deleted scene, but the film is just about perfect as is.

Pretty cool. Yes Dallas and Ripley were involved in a sexual liaison, and I have always believed that Kane and Lambert were also involved. Parker knew and may have had something with Lambert as well. Parker definitely wanted Ripley and she was having fun with it. But I think Ridley Scott made the right decision by avoiding the subject. It would have clouded the purpose of the storyline.

It's likely Scott never had any intention of using the scene. One important yet often overlooked element of the script for Alien, and how it was cast. None of the roles were race or gender specific. It's why they only have nick names or last names. When the actors came in they were reading for any role. Ridley Scott then placed them where they worked best. Ripley was not even confirmed to be female until Sigourney Weaver tested best and got the part. That sounds like a scene that Ridley Scott had, but that it didn't really fit in with this movie. So he filed it away, and then dusted it off with Prometheus.

  • @conflictmagazine

And it was in the novel as mentioned. This is why I have the same attitude about what Cameron did to Alien that folks have about what Fincher did to Cameron. I was glad Fincher did what he did. The whole 'Ripley's a mother blah blah blah' was a completely different rendering of the Ripley character and didn't fit at all. Just one of many reasons why I have disliked Aliens from the start.
And no, there shouldn't have been a sex scene. That part of the relationship had passed but it was why they argued like an old married couple.
And you have to go back to an original copy of the novel to find this. Later versions of the story were retconned and edited this out to keep the 180 turnabout of the Ripley character on track.
Thank you for making this video. I get so tired of hearing how Fincher screwed over Cameron's vision of Alien when he was guilty of the exact same thing. And it was through Scott's vision of Alien that we have the franchise (for better or worse)...not Cameron's like so many imply in comments around YT. You'd think Cameron invented the franchise.

I think Ripley and Dallas might have had a past relationship. She does butt heads with him and speaks to him on more then a professional manner. He only raises his voice to her in many scenes, also deleted scene wise. That shows a more personal level of interaction. Ripley is ready to abandon ship as the only officer aboard and "go out after them" after learning MUTHUR deciphered part of the SOS. Later, she also has to decide for a moment to let him in or to obey protocol and leave him in the airlock. The thought is seen with the pause and Ripley licks her lips- subconscious romantic reaction. He has a protective nature about him when the facehugger appears. Yes he could do that with anyone, but look at the way she holds onto him. Like she has been waiting for a moment to touch again, even in unusual circumstances. Ripley is not a damsal. She volunteers to go into the vent and Dallas over rules her quickly. Her face at that move is evident that she didn't want him to risk his life. When he's in the air duct and they lose contact, she is very upset calling his name. Then when he 'dies' she is shown to be very upset- unlike any other death. Her reaction to Kane was fear and shock. Her reaction to Brett was fear and a yell of his name. Her reaction to Ash was fuck you. And her reaction to Lambert and Parker was pure fear with the low groan she belted out (perfectly at that!). Dallas's was sadness, eyes closed grimacing. When she finds him later, she cries out loud.
You could argue that it was a professional relationship of seniority. But I think there might have been more than that in the past.

I've been reading the novelisation of Aliens recently, and it seems to confirm that there was something between them, when the photos of the Nostromo's crew are up during the Weyland-Yutani inquest.
"As she spoke to the sombre inquisitors the large videoscreen behind her was printing out mug shots and dossiers. She was glad it was behind her, because the faces were that of the Nostromo's crew. There was Parker, grinning like a goon. And Brett, placid and bored as the camera did its duty. Kane was there too, and Lambert. Ash the traitor, his soulless face enriched with programmed false piety. Dallas...
Dallas. Better the picture behind her, like the memories."
Nothing's concrete, but it suggests they had something going on.

Casual sex between crew members was mentioned in the final movie when Ripley asks Lambert if she slept with Ash. "He never seemed interested" she replies. The inference is that casual sex was considered normal practice and Ash's lack of interest therefore unusual.
Interesting sexual aside: In Aliens, read the screen when Ripley is being interrogated about the deaths of her crewmembers. The readout on Lambert says she's a male-to-female transgender.

Also there's a scene in the comic book adaptation of Alien that supports the open sex on the ship hypothesis. It's when they are discussing how strange Ash has been behaving. Lambert says to Ripley something along the lines of "I haven't slept with him, have you?"
EDIT: I went back and checked to be sure, the exchange actually went like this - Ripley asks Lambert "Did you ever sleep with Ash?" to which Lambert replies "No, did you?" and Ripley says "No. I never got the impression he was interested."
    "Neither did I."

Mr.Mask Maker how? That makes no sense. Two characters having a 1 minute sex scene? Lok

it's very standard in horror/slasher films with a sex scene either after or right before another death, but yeah i agree i'm fine that they left it out.

TheGreatGeekDetective I agree. It would've helped the film if anything. Never been a nude scene that hurt a film, period.

It looks like Weaver got topless for the screen test? That's some dedication!

Supposedly the first scene for the Romeo + Juliet with Clare Danes was the topless one. I assume that's how Hollywood or Fox rolls.

Which film are the scenes from 1:31 to 2:06 from?

The footage is from a screen test with Sigourney Weaver for Ripley. More elaborate than most screen tests, many sets were constructed to best give an idea of how the film would look and how Weaver would fit as the character.

I thought that ripley's role was supposed to be for a male actor and no changes in the script were made to accomadate ripleys gender.

I believe that the original script did not assign genders to any of the characters.

“Director’s” Cut of the film - Ripley finds Brett and Dallas cocooned in the bowels of the ship. Dallas utters the words “Kill Me!” a couple of times.
Ripley gets very upset before she euthanises Dallas. Simply a disturbing scene for her to find or was it because she had to kill the man she had grown to love (whether or not they were physically involved)?
Some kind of a relationship would add to the tragedy of her saga. Dallas, Hicks and Clemens all bite it. Exactly why the studio made the right decision to kill off all the other survivors of the Sulaco mission for the third instalment. Survival rate is essentially one person (or fewer) per encounter by the start of each sequel - and the company still think it’s a good idea to try and obtain a specimen.
