END HIM RIGHTLY - The mighty pommel bolt
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 сен 2024
- High speed sword pommels launched from a 960lbs crossbow.....Why? What?....Really?.......500 years ago Talhoffer wrote an instructional book on how to fight. One drawing shows a man throwing his sword pommel at his opponent and 500 years later Skallagrim turned it into a meme........
I have adapted a crossbow bolt with a 510g sword pommel and shoot it at a camera and see melons to see what happens, but it also brings up the important question "What weight bolt is best?"
That film will be coming.

Ahh it seems I have been taken in by the meme...It seems the phrase "End him rightly" was a mistranslation by Skall in the first place it was something like "End it swiftly" which makes more sense, but is of course much less fun. It was also not from Talhoffer but was from the manuscript Gladiatoria (MS Germ.Quart.16) fol. 7r: "Note the twelfth play. If you want to end him quickly, hold your spear and sword together on your arm, unscrew the pommel of your sword and throw it at him vigorously." Thanks for the information Schlachtschule
of course it is a mis trranslation,. i is used by skalagrim after all. Sorry I cant stand channels that send misinformation out in the workd while professing that they dont.
How dare he intentionally screw up like that, right? That seems like an odd position. Sure, if it’s personal preference, don’t watch the guy. I just don’t watch Skall because he can’t decide whether he’s educating me or entertaining me. That and his obsession with longswords. Pretty sure he doesn’t deliberately spread false information, though. Even heard him in some videos say “take everything you hear on the internet with a grain of salt, including what I say.” or something along those lines.
@@ttaibe Dude, all of us in this community are learning all the time, even the big content creators. It's just a matter of trying our best, and acknowledging that none of us are all-knowing. I personally can't remember Skall or any other big channel ever saying they never put out misinformation, and in fact I remember many channels specifying the exact opposite.
I believe he corrects himself in a later video. And what’s wrong with being educational and entertaining?
I submit that if you have time to unscrew the pommel of your sword and throw it divesting yourself of a useful weapon in the process you weren't in a very serious fight :)
If End Him Rightly was meant as a joke, Talhoffer is nodding slowly with a satisfied smile, knowing that his joke is still funny half a millennium later.
If End Him Rightly was meant to be serious, Talhoffer is nodding slowly with a satisfied smile, knowing that the practicality of his ultimate technique has finally been proven.
win win
Talhoffer, a tale of success.
End him rightly is like the Ea Nasir of the late middle ages.
Except that it's not in Talhoffer but instead in gladiatoria and it doesn't translate as end him rightly, end him quickly is closer.
@@IcEye89 So, somebody confused "resch'" with "reht", or something, or just a liberal translation?
I'd like to think that there were some medieval blacksmiths in the 1600's that fooled around like this in their spare time.
I have no doubt they did.
Fredrik - I think people haven't changed that much, so yes
Hold my mead and watch this 😄
1600s is not medieval
Crossbowman to bolt-maker: "Is that a rusty old sword pommel on the end of that crossbow quarrel?"
Boltmaker: "Yes it is! I fished it up out the pond and after I threw it at a few pieces of fruit on a fence, I got to thinking..."
Crossbowman: "I have my crossbow with me. You want to go see how it flies?"
Boltmaker: "Oh good lord yes. Let me get some fruit."
This isn't the content we need, it's the content we deserve.
Thank you
After that first shot, I couldn't work out if Tod was enjoying his strike or looking for his thumb.
Thanks for caring, but the string just skids under your thumb, if you do loads, it gets a bit sore, but just a few shots is just fine
I thought the buttstock had hurt his shoulder.
I love how this has just become it's own meme on the internet...it even has it's own "know your meme" page. It's pretty funny to think about considering how small it seems back when that video first came out.
The whole thing is just so odd, from beginning to end
@@tods_workshop The fact Skall made it so well known it actually showed up in video games is even more bonkers..and it wasn't a very long time to do it either as the vid was posted back in 2014.
The fact that most people, which are a very niche public, saw the original when it came out and just went... Yeah, this is a meme now, is just amazing.
@@Peagaporto yeah so many memes I made I mean I was like 13 and was just trying to let everyone know how to end someone rightly
It's really impressive the reach it got. I fully expect it'd remain a channel in-joke when it came out.
Medieval lord in a moment of deep contemplation: _I wonder how our distant descendants will remember us...?_
Distant descendants:
Error end him rightly
We're not gonna be their final distant descendants. There's still many more future generations and views they'll have on the past, including our own
@@andrewgodly5739 I didn't say we are "final descendants" lol
As some wiild and crazey guys 😁
@@andrewgodly5739 that assertion is yet to be confirmed, and is actually looking quite shaky, right now.
*Skallagrim sees melon explode* "So THAT'S what that's supposed to look like!"
I think it's wholesome that the medieval history enthusiasts content creators interact with each other in that way.
More than wholesome, it is wonderfully informative and entertaining❣
That camera has more medieval battle scars than anyone has had in the last 600-700 years
And Tod wears it the helmet on the second shot ^^
Skall's little pommel learned to fly. He must be so proud.
Little Pommel Larry, Tiny Box Tim's ancestor
(Pronounced 'skatl'.)
The little pommel that could ..
All kidding aside that must pack a punch man. 510 grams moving that fast....damn.
@@Aliyah_666 yep .. thats going to cause some headaches.. 😋
Todd's wife "Dear would you feed the chickens?"
Todd: chickens eat melons, pommels smash melons, would a pommel bolt? "On it dear."
Sounds about right
The first person perspective of getting absolutely *THWACKED* by the pommel-bolt is almost chilling to watch.
It's just slow enough you know it's coming but it's too fast to do anything about it. On the bright side, someone would write down your name as the poor sod who got murdered by a flying pommel.
This is what happens when a medieval lord declares his knights are only to use blunt arrows on revolting serfs.
Don't say that about people you don't even know!
When you want to take prisoners in Mount and Blade
It is said that the people are revolting. You said it! They stink on ice!
@@JohnSmith-jp5bj Jeremus looks upset
"I mean Lord, they're not exactly great serfs but I wouldn't say they were *that* bad"
That 960lbs steel bow is too inefficient to accelerate anything to the speeds modern crossbows are capable of, BUT it can accelerate really heavy things enough to generate some serious momentum.
A good observation - thanks
500 year old joke, still going strong XD Thank you I needed this today
Right there with the bollock dagger
Old jokes are always the best, they are just comfortable
You've essentially fired a very light mace from a very heavy crossbow. This has potential.
A _lot_ of potential... Kinetic energy, bound up in those crossbow arms, waiting to be unleashed.
This looks like a cool fantasy skeleton skull smashing arrows, since normal arrows probably won't stop a reanimated skeleton
Zombies!!!!!!!
@@tods_workshop Nah mate. Zombies are resistant to piercing _and_ bludgeoning damage.
To end a zombie (rightly or otherwise), you either need some kind of elemental damage (fire is almost certainly easier to bring forth than, say, acid,) or slashing damage.
Time to invent the _Knife Quarrel?!_ Or you could use those "frog-crotch"/crescent-moon bolt/arrowheads, I suppose.
@@ShadowDragon8685 smashing the brain, the seat of consciousness, works well enough.
@@ScottKenny1978 Unfortunately not - zombies are reanimated by negative energy, and as such are undead and thus, immune to critical hits. Smash the brain, hack the whole head off, it won't care much. You've just gotta hack it mechanically apart sufficient to cause the reanimation to fail. It's not that hard, really, they don't have many hit points, but they have DR 5/Slashing. When a flanged mace only deals 1d8+STR damage (or +1.5 STR if you're two-handed it), you stand a good chance of doing fuck-all damage.
Collaboration overload!
Skallagrim and Metatron an hour ago; now, Todd and Skallagrim!
Guess I'll sleep later.
The meme will not die, the community will make sure of that :D
That second shot, good god, Tod!
You may not have ENDED HIM RIGHTLY, but you rightly ended his dynastic line if he didn't already have _heirs!_
He took the phrase “practical joke” a bit literally in this one. Absolutely love it.
I just love how he's left the bolt that penetrated the GoPro helmet in place, as a
1) token of the adventures the helmet has seen and
2) reminder that it's there for a good reason.
And it shall be there forever
I think the Knight Vision setup must be magnetic... Feels like it's unreasonably hard to miss!
That was such a lucky/ good shot and it certainly felt like it was magnetic
This was pure Monty Python! Still laughing
I’m gonna go closer to the melon!
"Accuracy is going to be a bit weird with this"
*scores direct hit on the first try*
Well this is just straight up...Majestic...Well ended sir!
Thanks
I love how in the second melon it ricochet back to take out the remainder of the melon. Perfect insult to injury.
I love that sudden realization that he may have destroyed his go pro lol
I really did think it had died again - but the camera Gods were with me that day
*sees title*
I'll take your whole stock
Breaking news, US military reportedly placing millions of orders to the workshop of British Cutler Tod Cutler.
I suppose that Mellon is not your friend...
Also Talhoffer did NOT have a POINT, he had a pommel... xD
I love how you're unashamedly having fun with all that, and don't hold yourself to tried and tested methods for the sake of experimentation. Keep it up.
Here before Skallagrim’s pinned comment, waiting patiently for his response 😂
If memory serves me correctly, I frequently borrowed a book on weapons from my elementary school library that showed different crossbow bolts and they showed a bolt similar to this (just not as extreme in weight) being used to hunt birds. So it may not "end him rightly" but it would put a pheasant or grouse in the pot for supper.
Gene Wolfe wrote a story called "Tracking Song" that features what is only described as a "club-bow" used by primitive hunters. It's never described in detail but implies a mechanism similar to a crossbow and fires "clubs".
Long story short, I always dreamed of an episode like this! PLEASE consider expanding on this concept, maybe a specialized club/pommel bolt-throwing crossbow? All-wooden club-bolts? Cheers!
Tod ends his own shoulder rightly with recoil
When he's standing in front of his building wrapping-up/delivering his outro at the end of the video, Tod looks as though he has cute little bunny-ears...
I do
If you think I'm going to put one of those things at the end of my sword, you're crazy.
Yeah, the Pommel might go off when you are cleaning it :O
Hmmmm bolt screwed into the end of a sword. Then launched from small cross bow at fleeing enemies. Ending them rightly.

Tod, Oppenheimer recoils in horror at this new weapon of ultimate destruction which you have wrought. May God have mercy on us all...
This is gonna be fun
It was fun
The phrase "boys with toys" comes to mind. I love it! These videos are just so much genuine fun. Not trying to prove anything or being better than someone else. Just good, wholesome fun!
Medieval hunter: Isn't that overkill for birds?
Tod: You mean people?
Big birds
That smile when stating "should we find out what it does?" is proof men only pretend grow up.
I’m so glad that you left the arrow in the helmet from your previous go round. I don’t think a half kilo blunt point would be imagined by anyone else in modern times let alone in medieval times!
This is absolutely amazing. This is exactly the kind of wholesome (unless you are a melon or GoPro) and enthusiastic content I've come to expect from Tod.
Last time I was this early Tod still had a go pro
Mateo, why are you loading a blunt bolt?
- A confused Genoese crossbowman.
Oh, I hope Skall does a reaction video to this!
I love historic youtubers (mostly you, Skall and Shad) cooperation
Reminds me of the blunt bolts used for hunting birds. Probably a fair bit heavier though.
It does not matter if "End him rightly" was a mistranslation. "Ending rightly" is now and forever a part of martial art history. Skallagrim's, and our collective meme contribution to the ancient and ongoing combat tradition.
Heyy tod keep making crossbow vids, they are so nice man.
Thanks, will do!
You, Sir, have won The Internet
How about a solid steel bolt?
It should fly straight, deliver massive momentum and be almost indestructible.
The heavy crossbow can launch a massive bolt nearly as well as a 70 gram bolt, so why not? It's limited more by how fast the steel bow can snap back than the weight of the bolt. A foot of 3/8" round bar would be about 170 grams, 1/2" would be 300 grams. With a bit of fletching added, that would fly so much better and still END HIM RIGHTLY.
Loved it .you should put that on the T-shirt ‘End him rightly’👍
"I've created this to save my equipment from destruction" -> "Let's shot End Him Rightly bolt at it shall we?" XD
That's actually not Talhoffer, it's Gladiatoria (MS Germ.Quart.16) fol. 7r: "Note the twelfth play. If you want to end him quickly, hold your spear and sword together on your arm, unscrew the pommel of your sword and throw it at him vigorously."
Thanks for that, I only ever saw his first vid and the the memes, so I stand corrected
@@tods_workshop You're welcome. Incidentally, the translation I included above is from the Wiktenauer web page. The original says "ob du wilt reschlich mit ym entten", which I personally translate as: "If you want to end quickly with him," which isn't quite as cool.
Your big smile was priceless. Looks like you had a lot of fun doing this video.

This is the epitome of science and history combined!!!
Disclaimer: I say that on every one of Tod's videos.
I see the influence of Jörg Sprave here... Love it.
A love letter to pure silliness. XD
wonderful amazing briliant idea, I was sad with the thought that end him rightly died away, but you reanimated it in such a refreshing fashion. Its great that such a medieval meme turned into modern meme and still does its magic, thanks for that to Skall, Shad and You
Pov: you're approaching the crossbowman and you get ended rightly
Tod, you're so excited having fun with the pommel!
THAT'S the premium content I've been waiting for all those years!
Finally! I didn't even know I was waiting for this, but it was about time for someone to bring peace to this matter. Great job.
Essentially, you're shooting a mace.
Yay
That's some serious blunt-force trauma there. RIP melon.
I knew the metal was a weakness but I doubt any helm cam can truly hold up against being ended rightly
Taking throwing the pommel to the next level was a nice idea and executed well. Watching the video was entertaining. That is purpose enough for the bolt.
The fruit killing ability of that bolt is excellent.
it would be funny if Talhoffer's end him rightly was gift art for a friend who did that in a panic
IDk if it was a thing historically, but i 've read about fowling arrows and bolts. Supposedly, they had a lead ball at the end instead of a point. Supposedly again,it was so they could down a bird without damaging it.
The video game shotgun slug of medieval crossbow bolts.
Nice to see a man enjoying his work so much
Imagine a volley of these bolts.
End him rightly is the 15th century mic drop.
lol Tod... you look happier with that splattered melon than Joerg his explosive stuff :D
No Sclice and Dice here, but to mash Melons rightly - PERFECT!
Joerg- invents repeating crossbow. Todd - invenst medieval sublethal weaponry. Collab maybe?
**GREAT WORK TODDY!!!**
To quote Scott from Kentucky Ballistics: 'It's Watermelon Time!'
Great video, funny and informative. Mr. Tod seems like the kinda guy i'd wanna go have a beer with after some metalworking while talking about some historical events.
... and now find somebody capable of throwing the pommel that fast....
We are not ready for a weapon this powerful. You were so focused on if you could, you didnt stop think it you should! Where do I buy one?
Just judging by how the watermelon frags out, it looks like it's dumping about as much energy into the target as a 44 magnum hollowpoint. That's darned impressive and thoroughly terrifying.

This might work. Imagine your opponent unscrewing their pommel and mounting it on a bolt. You might just wat to see what he is planning to do
I am sorry to laugh at your potentially having to buy a new camera but the roar of laughter which was induced when I saw that camera fly. Keeping in context with the comment I recalled that you brought up.
