"End Him Rightly" - A bizarre tactic in a Medieval fighting manual (Gladiatoria MS KK5013)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 дек 2014
- Here is a more recent video about this, in a more prudent approach :) • Okay, Let's Talk Pomme...
This is a really strange "technique" shown in manuscript KK5013, which is part of the Gladiatoria, a German series of manuscripts from the 15th century. They deal with armored combat in a judicial duel, armed with spear, longsword, buckler and dagger.
This seems to be evidence of swords with threaded pommels as early as the late Middle Ages, and it's also a really strange and apparently utterly impractical idea for catching your opponent off guard. I cannot imagine that anyone could possibly pull this off successfully.

Oi mate, old memes best memes.
Let's face it, the "end them rightly" has basically become something of a trademark now, over many years. And it's fucking awesome :D
All your base are belong to us!
Perhaps it was written into the manual as a joke. Historical context is obviously important here. The world was a much smaller place during this time period and could reference some widely known trope of the era. It's possible that the pommels being referenced were decorative and could be unscrewed quickly without much effort as opposed to the vigorous cranking required for the swords in this video. A pommel that could be unscrewed by forcefully running the hand across the surface just once as it glided loose on it's own seems likely. Books were extremely rare during this time period so the type of swordsmen using these moves would quite possibly have decorative and ornate swords with such pommels. A heavy pommel striking the helmet would be very disorienting. The helmet would ring loudly and possibly shift position on the face obscuring your opponents vision and causing an impulsive reaction to lower their guard to make necessary adjustments. It also seems like a very effective way of disrupting their focus and provoking an aggressive outburst. All things considered this move doesn't seem that absurd. But I suspect that context is everything with this particular inscription.
Instead of a pommel, use a rock? For distraction, of course.
The first recorded Troll-incident
I think the author must have thought. "Hmm, the whole point of trial by combat is letting God decide, the people reading my book already have a huge advantage in swordplay. Maybe I'll level the playing field in this one case by giving them ridiculous advice!"
Nah bro, Diogenes trolled Alexander the great long before that.
It could have been a joke advice: It is so obviously a joke, but could also have been to cause a nasty surprise for any enemy that might steal the book and trying to use it.
+Jones Crimson remember the 'featherless bipeds'

Right, so next D&D game the party will find a sword with an enchanted pommel. Just the pommel. You can throw it.

No, but you have to unscrew it from the Mundane Sword of Nothing Special.

Liam. Fuck it I'm going for it. I will say how it works
Ayyy....LMAO
Moral of the video : trolling is much older than you think
@xxBOUNTYxxHUNTER No, no. Not trolling in that way, but trolling in order to annoy a person or embarrass them. Throwing the pommel of your sword at your opponent's head would be pretty humiliating if you think about it.
@xxBOUNTYxxHUNTER If you actually watch the video, he will say that the old photos in the guide shows threaded pommels.
@Ryan Smith Yeah, and it's not a joke to throw your pommel at someone, it's much more of a troll
This is probably the 15th centuary equivalent of "what if this video was the only evidence humans ever existed"

I can't think of any other plausible explanation - the people of the time wherever this book was sold must have had some kind of 'internal' joke, and it must have been obvious joke to them

When they meant "end him rightly", they didn't mean effectively. They meant to disrespect them
Like medieval teabagging or t-posing
Imagine being on your knees, your ear are ringing for all the beating and you can't feel your arm from fatigue, you hear a humming sound that you recognise as the halo theme, you slowly raise your helmet and see the opponent t posing with the pomel in one hand and the sword in the other. He stop humming, looks at you and with a twisting kick he make your helmet spin away from your head. He drop the sword and cross the fingers on his plate armour, still holding on the pomel. "I had to do it to thee" he say as he end you rightly

Lol that's funny imagery. But seriously the manuscript doesn't seem to mention weather or not the pommel is or should be fully screwed on so perhaps if this became a common suprise/destruction tactic the fighters went into the fight with the thing almost off so it was just a *turn turn ha type deal.
My thought was actually that perhaps it's less for hurting your opponent, and more for essentially disrespecting them, or perhaps even disrespecting their ability in combat by using such a silly technique.
Basically using a 'point down' emote.
"Well, what is it?"
Hero✩Lydragius: Yes, knights and nobles in olden times were pretty sensitive after all, with their honour and all that.
So it's quite feasable that you could disrespect one to death.

Not really, since the other techniques in the same manuscript are viable and reasonable.
Well, that was a bloody fast response.
Yeah, what I meant is author could sneak in some bullshit on a thought that no one will notice it because everything else is legit.
Actually, scratch that. I want to see people doing this during the reconstruction events.
Requiem100500 check out ThegnThrand's channel, they tested this
+Skallagrim, you missed one small detail, which explains everything:
First, imagine being a knight who is suicidal for some reason (love, money, impotence - the works). Problem is, taking one's own life was a no-go for Christians in medieval times, so offing yourself would be no option because of the negative consequences: not getting a proper burial, shame for the family, eternal damnation (okay, an endless barbecue would make at least THAT a little more bearable) etc. You know the drill.
So, you would need help, and thats where the pommel thingy comes in. Imagine the probable (if not certain) outcome of a swordfight when one of the fighters suddendly starts to frantically unscrew his pommel to throw it. As you proved well, this takes a great amount of time which would result in a great amount of opportunities for your opponent to end you really (so to speak). Which means, you would be dead (which you wanted in the first place), but not by your own hand (which would be frowned on), but by the hand of your opponent in battle (which wouldn't). Problem solved.
Second, in Ye Olden Days, nobles quite commonly spoke in funny ways. For instance, they used the majestic plural when referring to themselves and variations thereof. One variation exists in the German language which
could be described as "majestic singular", so to speak, i.e. using "he" or "she" instead of "I" (e.g. "it pleases him" would mean the same as "it pleases me").
So in "ending him rightly", the "him" would actually refer to oneself, thus actually mean "ending me rightly", which would mean "in the right way" a.k.a. "I get what I want while dodging the bad stuff".
So "end him rightly" is nothing other than what we today call "assisted suicide". :-)
This reminds me of a trick the authors of the movie Good Will Hunting did. When pitching the script to whichever important person it was, they left in a surprising gay sex scene that had nothing to do with the story. When the important person asked them about it, they told him they were checking to see if he even read the script, and actually added the scene much later.
I kinda wonder if this is a bit like that, just checking to see if someone read his work.
So this is why the Mordhau hidden achievement exists.

And, honestly, I think that's totally the point. Unscrewing your pommel to throw it, is a VERY stupid idea while the fight is still contested . . . but once you've got him "on the ropes" . . . you take the time to unscrew your pommel to show that, "Yeah, I am this much better than you . . ." thereby "ending him rightly."

You're overlooking the agressive angle of the thread. Your sword has the type of thread like a modern bolt and nut would have. The clue is in the image you showed. The pitch of the thread is very agressive. I calculate 3 or maximum 4 turns of the pommel. Also if you quickly flicked your wrist you could have forced the pommel to keep spinning until it popped off unto your waiting hand. Which would have been instantaneously. It would have been two movements: twist to unlock and flick the pummel to spin it. Try it with a nut and bolt. Flick it like snapping your fingers and the nut will roll sideways quickly. It would have been even faster with only 2 or 3 threads per inch as opposed to 8 to 24 per inch I would calculate for a modern bolt.
true, especially if you grease the thread rightly beforehand

He may have been addressing katana pommels, which we all know double up as incendiary grenades due to superior Japanese engineering.
Mason Wiegand The pommel grenades were also folded over 1000 times to increase blast radius.
hallonet654 You also forgot to mention that they have an electromagnet, which can be activated using the main sword to cause it to fly instantly back to the hilt, making the grenade pommel completely reusable.
And the ones the ninjas used came in smoke or poison gas models as well, though the samurai mainly adhered to the incendiary models, as such cheap tactics were considered by most to be dishonorable.
hallonet654 you made my day, man... hahah
hallonet654 You seem to be forgetting the superior nippawn steel. they were called grenades not because they exploded, but they were so mirror-esque shiny and clean that it refracted the suns rays into an all directional laser. It didn't bother you because of the shape of the pommel; it didn't refract as much towards you, it was shaped like this:
YOU ] ENEMY

Okay. So imagine this. Two dudes are dueling in armour and both are quite expert however one is poorer than the other. So after some time the poor mans sword's pommel began to unthread from the repeated blows and parries. Eventually the poorer man knew his pommel was about to fall off so he did a quick step back and simply threw the pommel at the richer man before stepping in for the killing blow against a temporaily perturbed man in armour who did not know how to react to the unknown.
And low. A legend was born. Possibly anyway, it could just be someone's idea of a joke from 500 years ago although it was an expensive joke considering printing was a costly matter back then and at the very least. Now I know my meme. End him rightly and throw a pommel at him.

I was so happy to see this added as something you can do in Mordhau, the medieval combat video game. I bet they watch this channel
Memes aside, having come back to this video years later, it’s amazing to me that we have on our hands a modern, medieval myth.
Of course we have the original source, but instead of thinking of the pommel throw as the first penstroke of the technique (as it’s depicted), it’s the punctuating mark. You end him rightly WITH the pommel throw of mass destruction.
We meant that exaggeration as a joke.
But now we have various video games, content creators, and possibly other forms of media using our Joke as we depicted it in our exaggeration...meaning our “end him rightly” joke has now taken its place in modern culture next to myths like “western medieval swords are dull,” or “plate armor and medieval weapons were heavy.”
I think from what I hear, and especially the term "End him rightly". This would be used as an insult or to display to others that your opponent is indeed defeated and you can toy with him.
Imagine your opponent has, let's say you've hamstringed your opponent, probably stabbed him in the stomach too. He's not dead but would fight like a drunk. Finish him off in a spectacular way that impresses onlookers.
So it's basically a teabag in modern gaming.
+Alfred Chan 100/20 more funnier than our modern teabagging methods.
You can teabag them. literally of course.
+Alfred Chan is this the boston tea party referrence? talk about american invasion
Nurlinda F Sihotang: Sis, do you even meme? :D
would make a good monty python skit
true
+Jacob Ellis Ye Olde Holy Hand Pommel of Antioch
+Jacob Ellis We did fresh fruit last week.
Lol, I agree
+Jacob Ellis "HAVE AT THEE" *throws pummel* *hits him square in the chest* "Did you just throw your pummel at me?"………*both stare at each other for a few seconds* "ON GUARD!" "HAVE AT THEE!"
In For Honor (I know this game is sacrilege on this channel but still) you can perform executions when you kill someone with certain attacks. One of the knights has am execution named "End them Rightly" where he unscrews and throws his pommel at a guys head when he's on his knees. He then pulls out another pommel from an endless bag of pommels and screws it back in. I never understood why that was in the game until now.
The only thing I can imagine is that in full plate armor, getting hit with a large metal object would effectively be ringing the bell, causes a concussive attack to disorient your opponent
gotta look good on that killcam
"yo dawg I cross-mapped him with my Pommel at the start of the match."
"real shit"
I used to be adventurer like you but then I got a pommel to my forehead.
Arþur D That's good xD
old but good 😂😂😂
I doubt you were able to live to tell the tale
blackoutgenez *throweth pommel at thou*
Screw thy pommel! *gets ended rightly*
Plot twist: that manuscript was made for some rich noble to laugh at and skallgrim has just being trolled by a dude from the middle ages.
Yeah, kinda ridiculous but I'm going to assume that threading from the middle ages would not be as fine as it is on a modern, machined sword.
The "end him rightly" sounds like a finishing move. Once the oponent kind of lost and you want to kill him in the most humiliating way possible.
"If you want to end him rightly, in other words, if you want to fuck him up real good." This is my favourite part XD
I think the technique is ment as a humiliation. You throw it at your enemy to mock him, like spitting at him. To end him rightly maybe means to fully dishonor him
right, you basically already beat them, this is just salt in the wound so to speak
I can certainly see how it would work better than spitting in a helmet with the visor down.
Why does it tell you to defend against it? You mean to say that if you are basically immobile and prostate, you can use your buckler and spear to defend yourself against a bit of pain.
Hmmm. Like trashtalk. Makes sense even in this day and age.
I wonder if he miss the throw. Basically he would be the one to be humilliated.
@Skallagrim Some time ago I saw debate about this technique between some well respected persons who are not only historicians and manuscript translators but also very experienced HEMAists and martial artists - by their view this is definitely unorthodox but still viable way to start the duel. So few points:
1) crossguard (historically) always has to be hammered to the blade and fits well and tight even without the pressure from pommel
2) you can unscrew the pommel before the duel starts so it would not be so obvious, if you are not sure about how to fight your opponent you could choose some rare technique and prepare for it, because in this scenario you will know your opponent before the duel starts
3) zufechten is most difficult and dangerous phase of the fight because you have literally no control over your opponent's actions so any little advantage in your favor could be essential - and this is in the text: threw the pommel and run at your opponent immediately so we can assume that you will surprisingly threw something heavy at your opponent and while he is instictively trying to block it you will start your own serious action with little timing advantage on your side. It definitely is little bit weird, but hey, it is all about staying alive so every little detail counts....
I've been using RUclips for a decade now , and I can honestly and genuinely say that this is the best comment section in a RUclips video ever.
AgroW I know right.

Its nice being an Internet veteran. ^-^

2020: YEEET!
"If you're screwing away at the pommel then there's obviously something coming." 😉
Honestly the comments section of this video is gold.
Looks like memes are much older phenomenon than we thought..
We may be looking at the first shitpost ever created here mate
Pretty much considering Plato is the father of the memes, and his master, Socrates was one of the earliest trolls.
qwerkaz wanted to like your post but it’s on 420 likes fam
We germans(not bavarians) always LOVED ironic humor.
Actually, this was a pretty common technique in the middle ages. In fact, it was so effective that they invented sword-less pommels specifically designed to be thrown at an opponent. However, due to limitations of human throwing arms, they invented special devices to throw pommels faster. These instruments are called "Firearms", which proved effective enough to become the primary means of warfare.
Some pommels were even filled with explosives. These were called grenades.
+joblessalex
Nowadays, pommels can even end the world. We call them nuclear warheads.
planet earth is one big pommel.
+CIKO XD lol
This explains everything!
German here, and while this is ancient german and I'm no historian, I believe "reschlach mit ym entten" is more like "end him fast" than "end him rightly".
but "mit ym entten" could mean "hit him with the end" (of the sword).
Heh you got trolled, our ancestors had senses of humor too
15th century kill-trolling! Even then they tried to finds creative ways to cheese the enemy in amusing "you suck"-kills
Basically the 15th century RL version of 360 noscoping.
Medieval T-Bag.
Medieval Gitin Gud you filthy casul
+Trevor Smith You mean: Gettest goodly, thou feculent commoner!
Isak Knutsen " "you suck" " - That would be "thou sucketh", actually... :P
I accidentally threw the blade and kept the pommel, dammit. O n O
Eric Albin you can still throw the pommel and end him
this is the funniest comment ive read so far
It wouldn’t. You probably would actually do more damage throwing the pommel rather than the sword. Pommels are much easier to throw, and you can get more kinetic energy out of it
Eric Albin so he took a blade to the face
Eric Albin Didbit work?
1:11 If you look closely at the text, it seems that everyone's favorite ultimate move has a counter to it. It involves defending yourself using a buckler.
The smarter gladiators started taking in pommels they had previously unscrewed.
I watch a shitload of gun videos, but you are my only blade guy and frankly, I'd rather that not change. Your acknowledgment of history and appreciation of armaments shows positive character.
Keep making Canada look awesome.
+TomXizor
Thanks!
+Skallagrim You're Canadian?! No wonder why you're so nice :D
+Marcos Sanchez Not with that accent. I'd say northern europe based on his accent. He does live in canada though.
+Udder Mayhem Well that's what I thought too. So I'm guessing Canadian society rubbed off on him
+Marcos Sanchez Im pretty sure he is norwegian
This is it. The start of it all.
JoeMcBob the birth of a meme?
It’s been 7 years. Why did I remember this.
I believe you missed to point with "end him rightly", in that the unscrewing of the pommel would have been before/in-between rounds, and the object was surprise. With the pummel gone, the sword could be "thrown" across the short gap between the fighters with a simple forward thrust... the sword would litterally come out of the handle and travel the 3-4 feet between the gladiators. Your opponent would not expect it to travel that distance/straight at them.
Obviously, it was a one time ploy. If it didn't surprise the opponent, the fighter was down a sword...
You just explained it. So it's not weird and it does make sense! Very good sense, that blade would shoot out with an enemy caught off guard.
What are you basing your idea on here? The description in the text and the picture both make it pretty clear the pommel is being thrown, not that the sword is coming apart. It even says to follow up after the throw by attacking with your sword.
