I kinda love the carefully slow turning from Mathieu, to Lucien's corpse, back to Mathieu... before dropping the head, looking down at it, back to Mathieu to gauge his reaction, and then slowly picks the head back up again. I am just imagining the "Hero" making these motions while glaring suspiciously at Mathieu the entire time.

If you check UESP they have an extremely detailed page on the NPC which mentions this interaction.

This is part of the reason why I love Oblivion as well as this questline in particular, all the little details you'd only see by exploring, trying different things and noticing small things. Another small detail you can notice that would signify you that something is off is Lucien's Dead Drop orders. Once Mathieu starts replacing them, the icon for the paper is different. Not only that, Mathieu, unlike Lucien, tries to justify the murder as opposed to just telling you to kill them which is also a clue that something is off. As a Dark Brotherhood member, you would kill anyone that the client wished to be killed, innocent or guilty and Lucien himself happily kills people so there is no reason for him to try to give a reason to kill someone. You are his right hand, you kill because he told you, you kill because Sithis demands it, who cares if the target is a piece of shit? I think one final clue that something is off is that at least one of the targets, the Khajit in Bruma, in his house is a book about the Dark Brotherhood and their tenets. You later find out he was a member of the Black Hand but before that, what other reason would he have something like that? And he also seems confused when you mention Sithis as far as I recall. This whole questline has hints of you being misled and who the traitor is and its stuff you wouldn't even think about until the secret is revealed and everything clicks into place. Another thing I like is how in the Fighters Guild and Thieves Guild, one of the NPCs in each of them actually goes through a mini arc as you progress through the questline. Amusei, the Argonian you meet when you are competing for the right to join the guild, when he loses to you he gets pissed and decides to strike out as a lone thief. This fails and you meet him later in a jail cell where he will offer information if you let him free but he's still pissed at you for taking his spot in the guild. In a later mission he steals a ring from a Thieves Guild member and tries to pawn it off to a countess of one of the cities but didn't realize its true worth as well as underestimated the countess' bigotry so he is simply arrested and is nearly killed by the jailer. You save him again and this renews his faith in the guild so he decides to try joining again. Next time you see him, he's giving you a message from the Grey Fox, having successfully joined and has risen the ranks enough for the Grey Fox to trust him. All this, and you get to see it as you progress through the Thieves Guild quest. Makes him feel like a real person, his life doesn't just change because you did something, he's doing things even when you're not around and your actions merely alter his course in life, its cool. The dude from the Fighters Guild as I recall has a bit of a lesser arc where he becomes disillusioned with the Fighters Guild and joins their rivals, you then meet him again when you infiltrate the group and when you destroy them, he's the last person you fight when you leave because you just destroyed his only source of income to feed his family. He starts off as an ally, joins the enemy and tries to kill you for what you did.
Another clue that you can find is at Alval Uvanis house. Theres a wall safe behind a painting that contains a black hand robe. Its amazing how detailed this whole Quest line is. Definitely one of the best gaming experiences i had.

@@Gilip Doing something as simple as dropping an item in the game nearby a specific NPC react to it is an impressive amount of work for something most people wont even see. If you were to drop something infront of anyone in Skyrim, nothing will happen, but here it gets a reaction out of this person without any hint towards this even being a possible thing to do. That is what he is amazed about. That the game actually react to the fact something is being dropped like that.
And here I was thinking I'd seen everything there was to see in this game, done every quest, seen every glitch and unique dialogue, then the game surprises me once again.

In all my years of playing Elder Scrolls games, I have never been more emotionally invested in a quest line than oblivions dark brotherhood. The family, Lucian, walking into this room to find him like that. Ah man the twist and turns of this game still give me chills. It breaks my heart that you had to purge the sanctuary. Such an amazing game. Beloved quirks and all.
I ran him through with my umbra blade and took his soul. Now Mathieu bellamount's soul is keeping the adoring fan soul company. So Mathieu has to deal with Galather, the Adoring Fan, a whiny Grey Prince who will tell him to murder him, an asshole corrupt guard and some smug prick dark elf who will taunt him throughout eternity. And with Skyrim revealing that soultrapped souls go to the Soul Carin, a hellish wasteland where souls spend eternity being fuel for unseen forces...you really punished him in a way I doubt even Sithis could.

I became addicted to skooma to deal with some f'd up things i have seen especially after I saw a friend who I saved his bacon on many occasions turn himself into a golden dragon in the temple of the one to fight a giant red devil(I kid you not) popped numerous amounts of the skooma that night to try and forget. Anyway one night I needed a fix so I found a guy staying in the talos plaza hotel who sneaks away from his wife to take skooma in a house someplace in the imperial city it wasn't his house but the homeowner was dead in his basement but I was intoxicated with the stuff so maybe I saw things. Anyway somewhere down the line I found myself taking the soul from this Argonian female called runs-in-cirlces... all i said was get lost! because she was waffling on about apple's and carrots then gave me a headache screaming out loud Ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni for like 10 minutes I thought she can annoy the annoying souls umbra has taken and now she does. Also I did want to take the soul of this guy called Big head with umbra because he was singing to a fork yes a fork I know. So i improvised and used this fork of horripilation on him instead. Big head's big head on a pitchfork of sorts Been off the skooma ever since.

I'm glad yall decided to give Oblivion a go! It's got its flaws but it's such a good game. Fun Fact: Oblivion is the game where I started using my username I've got here. I use it for pretty much everything ^-^ All bc of a badass Oblivion character I created!

It might just be me but I feel like Bethesda took more care with making the Oblivion dark brotherhood quest line than Skyrim's. In skyrim there were a few quests that were fun like hunting down Cicero and a few that were emotional like when the sanctuary is attacked. The rest of the quests were more going with the motions, go here, kill them, go home, rinse, repeat. In oblivion however it is the exact same process but each quest feel completely different. My personal favorite is the Who Don' It quest, every time I do that quest It feels different even though I'm killing the same people in the same house. This small attention to detail is just another reason to support this idea.

I’m so glad I read about this detail the first time I played through back in ‘07, never would have thought to do it otherwise. The Dark Brotherhood and Shivering Isle were definitely the highlights of this game. Skyrim did not compare on atmosphere in the slightest
i remember holding the head up to his face in one of my playthroughs but he never reacted to it. i didnt know hed actually react to the head if you just threw it down
Wow...you know it honestly often felt like your actions didn't have consequences in Oblivion, but this is right up there with killing the guard at the top of the statue in Deus Ex.
I'd say there are a few more moments like this in Oblivion. I just typed a comment explaining an NPC in the Thieves Guild quest called Amusei who your actions affect over the course of the questline. You meet him when you are trying to join and beat him in the test, getting to join instead of him. This annoys him and tries to strike out on his own. This fails and he gets arrested, and you meet him in a prison cell where he offers information if you free him. He keeps trying his luck as a lone thief, stealing a ring from a Thieves Guild member and trying to pawn it off to the countess of one of the cities but underestimated her bigotry and gets thrown in jail again, this time almost becoming food for a vampire under her employ. You save him during your quest to get the ring back and this causes him to have a change of heart so he says he will try to join the guild once more. The next time you see him, he's one of the Grey Fox's contacts for you, telling you where to meet him so he not only did try, but succeeded and moved up the ranks. Beating him in the test and saving him those times had the consequence of keeping him alive and allowing him to finally join the guild which I thought was awesome.
I remember how much hate I felt the first time when I saw Lucien dead body. I was so shocked an like nooo... . Nooooo and then I was so much hate and rage that I tried to kill all of them in this house - didn't work well for me but I was so pissed

I ran him through with my umbra blade and took his soul. Now Mathieu bellamount's soul is keeping the adoring fan soul company. Also keeping their souls company are... the grey prince, the guy in the cell opposite mine who said I was going to die in prison and laughed remember him at the start of the game, the guard who told me he doesn't know me and don't care to know me, some wood elf guy from skingrad who was following me saying "over here Yeah you", the list goes on and on and on
So Mathieu has to deal with Galather, the Adoring Fan, a whiny Grey Prince who will tell him to murder him, an asshole corrupt guard and some smug prick dark elf who will taunt him throughout eternity. And with Skyrim revealing that soultrapped souls go to the Soul Carin, a hellish wasteland where souls spend eternity being fuel for unseen forces...you really punished him in a way I doubt even Sithis could.

I became addicted to skooma to deal with some f'd up things i have seen especially after I saw a friend who I saved his bacon on many occasions turn himself into a golden dragon in the temple of the one to fight a giant red devil(I kid you not) popped numerous amounts of the skooma that night to try and forget. Anyway one night I needed a fix so I found a guy staying in the talos plaza hotel who sneaks away from his wife to take skooma in a house someplace in the imperial city it wasn't his house but the homeowner was dead in his basement but I was intoxicated with the stuff so maybe I saw things. Anyway somewhere down the line I found myself taking the soul from this Argonian female called runs-in-cirlces... all i said was get lost! because she was waffling on about apple's and carrots then gave me a headache screaming out loud Ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni for like 10 minutes I thought she can annoy the annoying souls umbra has taken and now she does.
Also I did want to take the soul of this guy called Big head with umbra because he was singing to a fork yes a fork I know. So i improvised and used this fork of horripilation on him instead. Big head's big head on a pitchfork of sorts
Been off the skooma ever since.

There are a lot of these little details in Skyrim and FO4 if I remember correctly. People just forget that they exist because they are so small.

@@abs5721 @Musical Child I was mostly joking buds 😋 I get some people weren't old enough or even around when Oblivion came out, and their first experience in Elder Scrolls was Skyrim. I'm glad yall decided to give Oblivion a go! It's got its flaws but it's such a good game.
Fun Fact: Oblivion is the game where I started using my username I've got here. I use it for pretty much everything ^-^ All bc of a badass Oblivion character I created!
@@Ottocide haha, thats epic dude. Tbh though, I take my sweet ass time playing a game 😂. Like, Skyrim has alot of content to discover so I rarely play other games once Im hooked. But yeah, Oblivion rocks 🍻.
It might just be me but I feel like Bethesda took more care with making the Oblivion dark brotherhood quest line than Skyrim's. In skyrim there were a few quests that were fun like hunting down Cicero and a few that were emotional like when the sanctuary is attacked. The rest of the quests were more going with the motions, go here, kill them, go home, rinse, repeat. In oblivion however it is the exact same process but each quest feel completely different. My personal favorite is the Who Don' It quest, every time I do that quest It feels different even though I'm killing the same people in the same house. This small attention to detail is just another reason to support this idea.

Even though the Lucians body is just the default zombie skin. I couldn't help but feel sick he was one of my favorite characters in any game ever that moment had me stop playing for a little bit

The Dark Brotherhood and Shivering Isle were definitely the highlights of this game. Skyrim did not compare on atmosphere in the slightest

i remember holding the head up to his face in one of my playthroughs but he never reacted to it. i didnt know hed actually react to the head if you just threw it down

Wow...you know it honestly often felt like your actions didn't have consequences in Oblivion, but this is right up there with killing the guard at the top of the statue in Deus Ex.
I'd say there are a few more moments like this in Oblivion. I just typed a comment explaining an NPC in the Thieves Guild quest called Amusei who your actions affect over the course of the questline. You meet him when you are trying to join and beat him in the test, getting to join instead of him. This annoys him and tries to strike out on his own. This fails and he gets arrested, and you meet him in a prison cell where he offers information if you free him. He keeps trying his luck as a lone thief, stealing a ring from a Thieves Guild member and trying to pawn it off to the countess of one of the cities but underestimated her bigotry and gets thrown in jail again, this time almost becoming food for a vampire under her employ. You save him during your quest to get the ring back and this causes him to have a change of heart so he says he will try to join the guild once more. The next time you see him, he's one of the Grey Fox's contacts for you, telling you where to meet him so he not only did try, but succeeded and moved up the ranks. Beating him in the test and saving him those times had the consequence of keeping him alive and allowing him to finally join the guild which I thought was awesome.
