The mic input would probably be the deciding factor for me in this comparison. Then you’re also gaining the lens lineup, colors, and DP-AF. I’m a Sony fan, but for an all-in-1, SL2 takes it.
you also need to consider the pre-amp, the canon might have audio inout but the pre-amp pretty bad. You can check the DLSR video shooter when testing rhode mics.
Your last point was the reason I went with the sl2. The one thing I hate more than anything is overheating. My phone has this issue. Heard way too many overheating stories in RUclips to steer me away from Sony. It can get pretty warm in my shop, the junkyards, and the car shows.
One thing you didn't mention is today the SL2 has the same sensor as the 80D AND a newer processor than the 80D. I bought an SL2 for my main camera recently because of doing a vlog and covering a conference. Great comparison! I agree with your assessment. Oh and hey I'm from O-H...
Personally would go for the canon as I’m currently using the 700d and am looking to upgrade at some point the canon for audio external and focus capabilities great video dude 👍🏻
Dennis Lovelady So, what are your thoughts Dennis for those of us who have been seriously considering doing RUclips videos, I have a wealth of knowledge (25/30 years) of building & flying R/C & feel I could contribute something. Does it really take a couple of grand to get into RUclips? Thanks for any considerations. W.G. Brown
I know you didn’t ask me but it doesn’t take a couple grand at all. Start off with whatever you have, a cell phone would be a good camera to start just to find out if you even like making videos. The overtime as you want to try different things you can upgrade to give you different capabilities.
W.G. Brown - Really sorry I didn't see this before. Gary has answered well, I think. Please bring your experience and knowledge to the community! Don't let technology (nor lack thereof) stand in your (our) way! 👍
Good video Everyday Dad, do you plan on doing a comparison between the Cannon M50 and the SL2? I haven't made up my mind yet on which camera will be my first. The Sony and the 2 Cannons are on my list of comparable.
The sl2 and the m50 are really really similar. I don’t have the m50 anymore so there isn’t any plans in the near term to make that video. I’d personally take the m50 because of how much smaller it is. It’s a pretty big difference.
Thanks for the video I been struggling to decide between the sony 5100, Canon T6 or canon Sl2 and honestly after watching lots of videos, yours made me decide to buy the canon SL2. Thanks
The Everyday Dad Thanks for replying, you are a huge helper! I a beginner, I want a camera that can be used for makeup photos and video tutorials. Flip screen is important to me as well as a camera that can auto focus but I I don’t want to spend more than $500. I saw canon has refurbished Sl2 for $499 as well as canon rebel T6i. Also, quick question promise I wont overload you with more questions but any advice for a video editing computer under $500 also?
Great video. I have both but just got the a5100 it’s going a trip with me to Vegas soon so we will see how it does for videos and photos. I have used the SL2 on Disney trips and it is awesome for pix and vid. I do love the inexpensive 10-18 lens for the Canon.
Hi and thank you for such a thorough review of these two cameras. One thing you didn’t address is either of these cameras connectivity. I am a musician in need of a media machine - basically making good quality video and the ability to share it ASAP. Are either of these WiFi systems faster or easier to work with (if for instance sharing with an iPhone/ Mac)? Many thanks and again I really appreciate these videos - super helpful!
Good video my man!! Im considering buying a sl2 because I already have an a5100.. Now i can have the best of both worlds lol!! Again.. great vid!! keep up the good work bud!!
The Sony lenses are wayy too expensive. I want the 35mm f/1.8, but there is no way I'm paying that much. Sigma 30mm seems to be the lens I'll have to buy, but it doesn't have stabilization. The Sony 16-50 kit lens is horrible with really bad corner sharpness issues at its widest. I do think Canon has to be the default choice here. But in my case, the pocketablity of the a5100 made me go for it. I take the camera everywhere, and people usually don't get intimidated by it. I get treated as a casual tourist, and not a pokey journalist, and that makes a huge difference to me.
These two are both great cameras, but at the end, I think Sony is a better choice for me. Speaking technically, both has APS-C sensor, but Sony is a little bit larger so defenitly helps me more when the body is only around the size of your RX100 VI. But anyway, another great video!
Damn bro, this was a great video. After watching so many of your videos I think I've found my startup camera in The Canon SL2. It was either the D3500 or Rebel T7i , but after running into this comparison, I think I'll make the purchase.
I’m shooting with a Sony a6000 right now but finding it lacking when it comes to creating online content without a bunch of accessories.... I would need to buy a monitor and external audio recorder....
The Everyday Dad it was a beast during my deployments on the ship and I even got a great retirement video for a friend shot 90% with it underway. Upgraded to the 6300 for 4K and 1080p vs 1080i. Unfortunately I cannot publish some of my good work publicly
Hello, I own A5100 but I am thinking of selling it (and buy SL2) due to the lack of mic jack, the really bad and confusing menu and the lack of viewfinder. Do you thing it worth the money I will spend on this change?
Ok this is my deal: I know the G7 is an awesome camera but Inlike the warmth of the SL2 and I have a few Pieces of Canon glass. It looks like I may start with the SL2 because although The G7 is a great price I still have to consider the glass Zi already have (Canon). Also judging from the video testing on RUclips I don’t see a huge difference when 4k is used. Does that affect my “Story”? Hmmmm. Love your videos tho.
I had a6000 and SL2 and I ended up picking up SL2 every time. Dual pixel autofocus, fully articulated screen, super cheat 10-18mm wide angle lens. Maybe Sony sensor has 10% better image quality? But I just don’t enjoy using it as much as Canon. The fideness(?) is a good point. When using canon, I focus on shooting and create image or video; but on a6000, I end up messing with my camera setting or focus or something a lot....
Brother please make a video on i Phone 12 Pro Max OIS Video stability & Picture quality V/S entry level mirrorless cameras like Sony A5100, Sony RX100 Mark iii compact camera 📷
It depends on the type of video. But as a general rule people will watch RUclips videos in 360p from their cell phones which makes image quality not as important as some might suggest.
is a5100 still worth it for videography? or save money for a6000? (don't tell me to buy a6300). My last questions, does DSLR like Canon EOS 700D great for videography? compared with a5100
The A6000 has a hotshoe and I think there's a Bluetooth microphone that you could put on the camera. @gung krisna: Afaik both A6000 and A6300 have no touch screen, so you'd have to buy the even more expensive A6500 to get one. And you need at least the A6300 to get 4K. It's so annoying that the cheap cameras have features that the more expensive ones don't (selfie screen, touch screen).
Great comparison video. I just ordered the Cannon M50. It seemed to be a good RUclips starter camera. If i enjoy it, i may upgrade to bigger and better later in the year.
Question about heating, yes the general consensus is they do overheat in video (30min) or (a6xxx) or (4k) (more intense use the more prone) especially in warmer conditions, but how do they fare when taking stills? Like if I'm walking around on a holiday or (attending a event, not catering for weddings, this really need more pro gear), could I keep it on for more then 1hr , taking occasional shots here and there? Or do I have to alternate between on and off frequently?
I went with the SL2 for use as a camera and it takes great photos. With that 1080p 60fps capability and mic thrown in and the great lenses available for it, it's a one stop shop. I am using the 18-55mm kit lens and bought the yongnuo 50mm and a canon 55-250mm for it and got some great wildlife shots and I'm a total amateur. Let me know and I'll post a link to my Instagram if you want to see some pictures.
Honestly, i dont care about 4K, 1080p@60fps is perfect and all my need -4K footage is heavy af -If my 1080p@60fps projects take like 5 hours to be on RUclips (3 in editing and 2 on uploading) i cant imagine 4K,even if it is 24fps -I mostly use 60fps since i got my vixia and theres barely (like if any) camera that can shoot 4K@60fps and if they do, they cost a lot

Saving over 600£ on the body+kit(460 for the sl2, 1100 for the 80d). I'm an 80d user and i love it, but i also have a 700d with a not amazing battery and it only took to buy a cheap extra one to fix the problem.
The mic input would probably be the deciding factor for me in this comparison. Then you’re also gaining the lens lineup, colors, and DP-AF. I’m a Sony fan, but for an all-in-1, SL2 takes it.

In all fairness I think the sl2 has decent preamps and the a5100 doesn’t have a headphone in jack so it’s hard to make a direct comparison
Yeah being able to record audio in camera is a really nice feature and one that I prefer when making my videos 👍
Your last point was the reason I went with the sl2. The one thing I hate more than anything is overheating. My phone has this issue. Heard way too many overheating stories in RUclips to steer me away from Sony. It can get pretty warm in my shop, the junkyards, and the car shows.
Yeah it definitely has the best heat dissipation system of the two!

I-O! and yeah its a really great little camera.
I went with sl2 over the A6000 because Canon lenses are much cheaper.
Personally would go for the canon as I’m currently using the 700d and am looking to upgrade at some point the canon for audio external and focus capabilities great video dude 👍🏻

They are so close to each others capability I’m not sure how much use it would be. But I might try it out someday 👍
Thanks for the video I been struggling to decide between the sony 5100, Canon T6 or canon Sl2 and honestly after watching lots of videos, yours made me decide to buy the canon SL2. Thanks
If I were buying a single camera for video out of the 3 you mentioned I'd probably get the SL2.

I used to be indecisive between a5100 and sl2. I got a5100 in the end and this video made me think I chose the right one!!
Yeah I like the a5100 more due to smaller size and it's a little bit better in low light 👍
What about the lack of viewfinder? Do you feel the need for it and does the flip screen makes up the loss of a viewfinder?
i still prefer a5100....
