Important note for overheating with the Sony a5100: I do use it quite regularly, and really the thing that makes the camera overheat is the AF. When I was using it with my old 70s telephoto lens at a wedding, I recorded for almost 30 minutes, it wasn’t exactly cold, and the camera did not overheat. So simply by switching to MF, this Problem can be fixed.

Yeah but is the colour balance? I don't think so. It's always trade offs with these two cameras, I own an A5100 and my daughter has a better Cannon. Thoughts are 1. The Sony tends to put greens to the fore colour balance wise compared to my daughters Canon. 2. Menu's are fiddly I love the A5100 but if Sony can sort out the two big issues above they would have a firejack winner. Given they will not if it was me buying today given my experience I would go Cannon.
But a hell lot of people still buy Canon because of the colour. Not only on skin tone , but also on things. That Sony Yellow-Green tint is atrocious. Also the basic colours of Yellow, Red, & Blue are better on Canon. Sony is catching up, but not on par with Canon.

I have the Sony a5100 and I hate it for sit down videos because it overheats after like 15 min. The quality is good for vlogging but indoors it was never spectacular to me.
I think, as usual with your comparisons, the answer is "You can't really go wrong with either one," which is good because I like that you don't feel forced to make a choice just so you have a controversial clickbait close.

When we say theyre both 24mp cameras... they are not the same..! M100 is better simply because its a much updated sensor.. a5000,a5100,a6000.. theyre old... so if you want a better jpegs straight out of the camera, get the m100...
No, more detail, Sharp imagen, no crop, better low light. A5100 wins hands down... You should ask yourself how it's it possible that Cannon it's copying a four year old camera and it struggles to be superior.?
The Sony A5100 just has a more true to life - crisper image, and at the end of the day, if that is important to you - Sony wins, but its a bit more than the sensor, it depends on which lenses were used in this video, which the Every day dad does not state. Could be that the Canon lens used in this video was not a very sharp one. The Canon colours and resolution in this video was clearly not as good as the Sony. But if your audience is viewing this on a mobile phone, like many do, it may not make much of a difference. I just moved on to a Sony NEX F3 which is about similar in image quality to a Sony A5100 (not far off) and one of my lessons is that all camera manufacturers deliberately cripple their mid range cameras to avoid hurting sales of their higher end products such as their full frame digital hybrid cameras (video and photo) or their cinema cameras. On my Sony, lacking a number of buttons and wheels to directly go to certain functions, without having to navigate a menu is a pain. This is where long term it would be great to have more dials and buttons especially ones which I can access directly without having to go through a menu. From what I have experienced, no number of videos will ever give you the full experience. I found so many little cripple hammers on my Sony such as ISO starting at 200, inability to reduce shutter speed below 1/160th of a second when flash is enabled, and more, little irritating deliberate crippling behaviors which are totally unnecessary, which would propel you to upgrade to a higher level camera, but until you try out that higher end camera, you do not know what else has been locked out or crippled on that higher end camera. Simple things like changing exposure compensation take a few more clicks or button presses than if I had a dial immediately accessible for such key functions, ideally I would like things like - flash type, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and exposure compensation, to be immediately accessible via their own wheel or button, but of course this would add to the cost. And some Sony APSC cameras need you to connect to the camera to charge the battery cos an external charger is not provided with the camera - which has charging via USB port., needing you to buy an external charger - minor irritation, if you'd like to e.g have more than one battery - just an irritation to have to buy a charger as an extra item. And if you charge the camera directly via USB, the camera has to be off - unusable, until charge is completed - kinda counter intuitive - with external charger and more than one battery, you can be out taking pics or videos, and charger is charging a second battery. I would strongly advise - go to a store that has one of these on demo (in a world without the pandemic), or find where you can rent the camera for a day or two and try it out in your own home/studio without pressure to discover how it works in the real world - your world. So you can discover the limitations of the camera you intend to own, - every camera has limits, the question is - which limits have been stealthily undisclosed by the manufacturer, waiting to trip you up, cos you assumed that they were not there. No magazine or RUclips video will show you the pitfalls that apply to your scenario - so use RUclips presenter like this as a very broad introduction- until you can try the product out for your self. For example, there is no undo - on delete of photos on the Sony - I accidentally deleted all my test shots - thankfully nothing important was lost, but that would be such a major issue. No undo for accidental deletions - none. Sadly the only way in 1st world countries to achieve this is to buy one, demo it and then return it if you do not like it.. It would be so wonderful if one could loan one for about 2 or 3 days for maybe £50 or $50 and if you chose to buy it, you only pay the difference - return the loaner camera and you receive your own brand new one. From a strategic perspective - Canon has a huge history of creating products with much better tactile productivity - with buttons and switches and knobs in the right place - from a camera users point of view and their core design ethos has been copied by everyone else. But the Sony look and clarity of image - borne out also by measurements done by DXOMark, is so much more accurate - to me. I would prefer to have access to the excellent more comprehensive range of Canon lenses. The Canon R series is a compelling roadmap, cos we all intend to grow and aim for bigger better things. The one weakness of all APS-C mirrorless cameras is their grip - all the Sony and Canon APS-C mirrorless cameras feel like toys, lots of plastic. and thin plastic at that, would not survive any serious fall. If at the end of the day you are still going to add a hefty lens for low light capability and more bokeh, to replace the kit lens with something with a max aperture no smaller than f/2, such lenses tend to dwarf the dinky rangefinder style bodies. One of the things that will most likely make me move to a higher end Canon DSLR is the grip and balance. I never thought I would say this ever - never. The form factor of Canon's R cameras sacrifices some of this chunky grip and replaces the nice large visible screens on a DSLR with something a bit smaller. I like the handling of a bigger body - really helps to steady things especially when you are shooting hand held. The metal body and thicker plastic Canon DSLR's just feel so much more like a serious tool, than anything Sony has made in their digital camera lineup and that comment applies to the A7 series - also - I see myself getting a vintage Canon DSLR like a 5D mark 2 or 6D mark 2 for photography, these range finder body style cameras from Sony APSC and full frame or the M series APS_C from Canon are ok for video - cos they'll be on a tripod or gimble anyway rather than being hand held. to the absence of a proper grip may not be material, cos you will rarely shoot any proper video holding these toy grips, in a video scenario - unless you are vlogging, and even at that I expect most vloggers to use some form of external stabilisation like a gimble, so they are never ever in need of holding the camera itself during their vlog. For photo - different game - so much of this is now done hand held. - where the grip makes a huge difference to me. SO for serious video - I'd go Sony digital mirrorless as a starter, and for serious photography definitely a Canon DSLR with a metal body and a good grip with superb LCD screen on top for immediate feedback without having to look at any screens, and the benefit of an optical view finder as standard/with the option to sue live view - if I want to. I think the whole quagmire of trying to fit it all into one camera is a disservice - who says you need a hybrid camera? - no one. Hybrid efforts bring with it too many compromises - best to pick two different tools that are purpose built for what they do. I'd rather carry two cameras that did what they do best, than force myself into compromises trying to fit it all into one camera. Every camera manufacturer is a lock in attempt. Every one. So choose the one with the least infringements to your consumer rights and privileges, and the least compromises to your intended way of life.
Canon ecosystem all day. I sold my Sony because the lens ecosystem was a bit more expensive. If you want more than a few lenses, the adapter is worth the $.
I'm stuck between Sony a5100, Canon EOS M100, and Fujifilm X-A3. I don't know much about cameras (still learning) and just basically wanna upgrade from phone photography for travel and stuff. Which do you recommend out of the three aforementioned?
I'm an image quality first and usability a close second kind of guy. I would say with that criteria the Sony has a slight edge. I have and love my a5100 but the M100 looks equality as capable. Thanks for another great video!
We are two separate people 🤣 I totally get that I’m an outlier in the camera nerd community (my comment section agrees with that) But I do think both are really great cameras 👍
I was totally on board with the canon until the side by side. Still don't like the fiddly Sony, so it looks like I'll have to look for a third option...
I am between the two cameras but i don't know which one to choose. I want it mainly for photography. Which one would you sugest to me? Thank you in advance
Helloooo! I am planning to buy a budget friendly camera myself but I'm having a hard time deciding between Canon M100 and Canon 60D cauz both has its advantage and disadvantage, may i ask for opinions about this ?
Great video. I have the A5100 and it's a little beast. I moved up to the A6500 but I still love the little guy and it takes some surprisingly high quality stills. From your video, the A5100 looks clearer than the M100 (not by much) but the microphone on the Canon sounds significantly better IMO. Keep up the good work!
Hi. I know that you're comparing two different brands here but could I just ask which do you think I should go for? Canon G7X Mark II or Canon M100? I am an absolute beginner and I plan to use the camera for shooting beauty review videos. Sorry for the out of he topic question.
Question. For recording drawing demos (lines on white paper= light setting) which one would you choose. To me the Sony had the better image quality, but with a constantly moving hand I wouldn't want the lense to pick up on the hand motion but on the line motion. Any tips on that? Also, did you mention a limit on their video recording time? Thank you!
Good comparison but i would not pick either of these. The lack of a headphone jack is a dealbreaker. You could pick up almost any other canon m series camera and it would have a headphone jack. With that said there are more low cost aftermarket lenses for the sony lineup.
@the everyday dad.. wow such a nice and fine comparison and reviews between these two camera especially for the newly vlogger like me who's wanted to have one.. thanks a lot everyday dad.. new BIG fan here!
Worth to mention that a5100 is better for streaming, as it has clean hdmi feature. Though on canon m100 it is achievable by using a special script, written on the SD card.
so conclusion is?? for an amateur like me who like to take photos but dont know and dont like to care so much abt setting a camera, which one is better? please answer huuuu
While the Canon M100 kit, at $400 is a great bargain, the Canon M50 kit, at $600, is an even better value with far better specs and features, for only $200 more.
I just want Sony to have a flip-out screen! I like everything about Sony but I can't rationalize buying a new one without them putting in a flip-out screen!!!
You got kinda the same picture from your M100 as from GH5 (white balance/purple light behind you) and you are saying that you like Sony's low light better. Words sounds apposite of the video I guess in this case. Plus seems like focal length was different too on a5100 and m100 because on m100 your face took almost the whole frame compare to a5100.
Canon is more user friendly, you can use like your cellphone and take pictures, while Sony usually have an edgy in image quality. But I prefer focus, because if you miss the shot there is no point in having image quality. Off course this changes at the high end Sonys, where Sony have the best focus, but these old Sonys are harder to use than the Canons.
so guys, which one should I choose? I am considering these two cameras due to the budget and their characteristics (do not offer options for choosing other cameras please)
Canon's footage looks very mushy compared to Sony. Also, Sony records at a much higher bitrate of 50mbps in XAVCS which is very grading friendly (for eg. XAVCS allows some highlight recovery in post, upto 0.5 stops, but H.264 has baked-in white values).
I am doubting whether to buy the canon m100, sony 5100 or sony a6000 (more expensive but, much better?). Actually I'm looking for a camera with very good quality but only for photography (not video) and that works well in automatic mode (fast and casual photos). I see in the video images that the sony 5100 seems to have better final definition or maybe better focus, but I really don't know which of the 3 cameras to buy. please help!
Sony's video quality can be good but colours are way off. Can't get a decent red out of the camera without a ton of settings in lightroom, it comes out orange.
I like the sony a5100 how it show the good quality of video and pictures because of natural color compare in canon m100 has faded backround color but in voice recording m100 has better good quality sound than a5100
I know this is a budget comparison, but I'm surprised you got rid of your Canon M50, it checks all the boxes except for 4k video, also not that expensive, can be had for a little over $500. I have been wanting the A5100 for quite some time and since I already shoot with the A6000 it would be easy to get used to, BUT the external audio recording requirement just stops me every time only because the type of videos I do is run and gun following kids and being all over the place and having to push two buttons every time I record is just more work, especially in post. I want to stay with Sony because I know it so well and I can rely on it, but without flippy and mic input jack...the M50 looks better and better.
It’s in the name. DSLRs have a mirror inside of them that reflect light for the autofocus and mirrorless cameras do not. It’s just the sensor and the lens 👍
Thanks for the fine comparison video been look for one a just dont know if I really need one but if I keep watching your video's I going to have to get one. LOL
It would blow the budget but I think the M100 would benefit immensely from a different lens...at least that's what I heard in an M50 video from someone much pickier about image quality. 😁Not surprised the 5100 was better looking in low light. I saw one today when I was looking at the new gopro....almost bought the 5100 instead of the gopro 😳 Out of curiosity, do you know what the picture detail (sharpness) was set at on the m100? Looks pretty soft across the board.
At first I wanted the m100 but because of the lack of image quality I will mabye change my mind. Do you know how much you can boost the videos he made with higher lenses?
Without have the camera sitting in front of me I'm not sure. Generally, most quality lenses you can buy will be a little sharper than a kit lens. They come with a price, which is why I said it would blow the budget. There might also be internal camera settings that could add some sharpness. Or shooting with brighter lighting etc.
@@markattardo well because i will use this most of the time for action in the Woods there is not much light. Maybe a 16mm will do the job. Still undecided witch camera I should get
I switched to the m50 from a6000. Canon is a lot less fiddly and has nice colors but it’s images are soft compared to Sony and Fuji especially at higher iso.
@@imnguyen6658 I did buy the m50 also but I am disappointed because of the lack of lens you can directly mount. Sure the is a adapter to mount all kind of lenses but that will eliminate the compact and lightweight body. I use atm a cheap and super small 7artisans 35mm f1.2 for my videos in the woods and I can capture anything really sharp even when it is about to sunset. To bad it is only manual..

So the a5100 has a wider angle?
Great video. I have the A5100 and it's a little beast. I moved up to the A6500 but I still love the little guy and it takes some surprisingly high quality stills. From your video, the A5100 looks clearer than the M100 (not by much) but the microphone on the Canon sounds significantly better IMO. Keep up the good work!
I totally agree both are great at different little things and I think either would be a great choice for someone 👍

I have A68 , is it better than both ?
Great video, can you please compare Canon M100 vs Fujifilm A5 vs Sony a5100.. Would help in purchasing decision. Thanks.
can canon m100 record 30mins in the setting of 1080p 30fps ?
Dude! This is awesome. Very informative 👏🏼
I've only used canon, but I have to admit 1 thing, that most sony cameras focus extremely well
Why didn't you focus the Canon?
As far as I can see the Sony image quality is much better.
The Sony camera has a natural color
Hi. I know that you're comparing two different brands here but could I just ask which do you think I should go for? Canon G7X Mark II or Canon M100? I am an absolute beginner and I plan to use the camera for shooting beauty review videos. Sorry for the out of he topic question.
So which is better?
Thank you!
This was SUCH a helpful video - thanks!
You can customise the d-pad buttons to change exposure settings...
Hi Sir! Which is better to buy? Fujifilm X-A3 or the canon m100? Thank you! :)
Janina Laurice I guess m100 should be better ;)
Worth to mention that a5100 is better for streaming, as it has clean hdmi feature. Though on canon m100 it is achievable by using a special script, written on the SD card.
Is there a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter available to support external mic?
Thanks for the info everyday daddy ❤️
Are you getting the gopro hero7 black
Yep I just got it today 👍
Nice one Gary... look forward to the review. Considering your passion for Gilles and action cameras the 7 looks like a great combo...
so conclusion is?? for an amateur like me who like to take photos but dont know and dont like to care so much abt setting a camera, which one is better? please answer huuuu
@The Everyday Dad
, you can use your phone to control A5100 through a built in playmemories remote control app
Nikolai Lyskov same with canon🤘🏻
Grest video! Not read the other comments but did you have digital IS on for the canon m100 as it looked cropped in for the studio setting?
I didn’t, I think I just had the focal lengths a little off.
@@TheEverydayDad im going for the m100
While the Canon M100 kit, at $400 is a great bargain, the Canon M50 kit, at $600, is an even better value with far better specs and features, for only $200 more.
I'm finding myself watching your videos more often than DSLR VideoShooter's! As always solid comparison video!
Is there any way you can hook up a adapter to the camera to have audio in camera like how GoPro does it?
No
Fotodiox EF-M adapter 1/2 the price of a standard Canon adapter. Works just the same.
This was really helpful, thank you!
Thanks for the review. Image wise, I think the Canon was crisper and right on whereas the Sony looks fuzzy and it wasn't focus issues.
I think you may have problems with your vision....
What editing video do you use and how do you sync in 2 steps!
how about a G7X MII and A5100 battle
Great review! Thanks for this!
Great review Dad!
I just want Sony to have a flip-out screen!
I like everything about Sony but I can't rationalize buying a new one without them putting in a flip-out screen!!!
Does the M100 have self timer?
yes.
8:50 M100 better👍👍
Hey mate, how about Panasonic Lumix GF7 or GF8 or GX800 etc. I believe this camera can do pretty well!
If using a Canon m100 or 200 always use a camera wrist strap when walking around with it.
that split screen comparison bit is good cross eye 3D lol
What lenses did you use for both of these? The kit lens? And great video by the way :)
At the end he said he used both kit lenses. 😊
I've used the a5100 so much that I don't need to go around to change settings. I just press the button reverse from the other side.
How does microphones in those cameras work outdoor?
Canon is more user friendly, you can use like your cellphone and take pictures, while Sony usually have an edgy in image quality. But I prefer focus, because if you miss the shot there is no point in having image quality. Off course this changes at the high end Sonys, where Sony have the best focus, but these old Sonys are harder to use than the Canons.
Just get the M50
M50 solves everything
Both cameras are very good. But sorry a little off the mark, I want to ask the camera that you are using in this video, by the way you use the camera?
so guys, which one should I choose? I am considering these two cameras due to the budget and their characteristics (do not offer options for choosing other cameras please)
The best tech reviewer awesome set up 😎
Canon's footage looks very mushy compared to Sony. Also, Sony records at a much higher bitrate of 50mbps in XAVCS which is very grading friendly (for eg. XAVCS allows some highlight recovery in post, upto 0.5 stops, but H.264 has baked-in white values).
So.... Which is better?
I am doubting whether to buy the canon m100, sony 5100 or sony a6000 (more expensive but, much better?). Actually I'm looking for a camera with very good quality but only for photography (not video) and that works well in automatic mode (fast and casual photos). I see in the video images that the sony 5100 seems to have better final definition or maybe better focus, but I really don't know which of the 3 cameras to buy. please help!
Your reviews are so darn good
At the beginning it kept cutting to a lumix 🤷♂️
Thanks! Good review
“Without pulling your pants down” lol I died. Classic everyday dad ;)
Sony's video quality can be good but colours are way off. Can't get a decent red out of the camera without a ton of settings in lightroom, it comes out orange.
I like the sony a5100 how it show the good quality of video and pictures because of natural color compare in canon m100 has faded backround color but in voice recording m100 has better good quality sound than a5100
Beautiful man 😍
thank you, this reviews helps me make the choice
I know this is a budget comparison, but I'm surprised you got rid of your Canon M50, it checks all the boxes except for 4k video, also not that expensive, can be had for a little over $500. I have been wanting the A5100 for quite some time and since I already shoot with the A6000 it would be easy to get used to, BUT the external audio recording requirement just stops me every time only because the type of videos I do is run and gun following kids and being all over the place and having to push two buttons every time I record is just more work, especially in post. I want to stay with Sony because I know it so well and I can rely on it, but without flippy and mic input jack...the M50 looks better and better.
pls review gopro hero 7 white. i wanna buy it.
Can you do the Apeman a80. Can you also post the music you use in your videos
My m100 can only do 50fps is that normal?
depend on your video system . NTSC ( 30,60 fps)or PAL (25,50 fps) . look the setting for change from PAL to NTSC. sorry for my english
Aurora Reali thanks
Waiting for the GoPro 7 review? Preview????
I just got it today, I can only make videos so fast 🤣
👍👍👍👍👍👍
What is the difference between mirrorless and a DSLR
It’s in the name. DSLRs have a mirror inside of them that reflect light for the autofocus and mirrorless cameras do not. It’s just the sensor and the lens 👍
The audio on the m100 is wayyy better ?????
my device a5100 thanks for comparaison videos
Thanks for the fine comparison video been look for one a just dont know if I really need one but if I keep watching your video's I going to have to get one. LOL
Ha! Well either of these would be awesome 😁👍
Sony hands down wins for image quality, at least form what I can see. The canon colors are much nicer however.
It would blow the budget but I think the M100 would benefit immensely from a different lens...at least that's what I heard in an M50 video from someone much pickier about image quality. 😁Not surprised the 5100 was better looking in low light. I saw one today when I was looking at the new gopro....almost bought the 5100 instead of the gopro 😳
Out of curiosity, do you know what the picture detail (sharpness) was set at on the m100?
Both overheating when video recording 15+ minutes?
Canon won’t let you film more than 10 minutes at a time, so it can’t overheat. You just start the video up again and you’re fine
the reason i hate canon is coz u cant charge it through a power bank..u gotta carry a stupid charger.. i mean its 2018 cmon canon!
Fujifilm xa3 vs canon m100 pls
Definitely a5100 is winner.
