    I purchased the a5100 for my RUclips channel. The flip up selfie-screen makes it the best of the bunch for me. For lenses, I own the kit, the 55-210, the 50, the 20mm pancake, and the FE 28 full-frame. They're all good for different reasons. I do miss the electronic view finder at times and the hot shoe since there's nowhere for an external mic. For anyone starting a RUclips Channel, I would recommend the 5100.

      Fire Escape Griller I'm planning on getting the 20mm f2.8, is it good? cause I've seen bad reviews about it

    • @GallaghersGrub
      @GallaghersGrub 7 лет назад +1

      The 20mm is ok. It's small, but it doesn't have Optical Steady Shot, which makes for shaky hand-held video. I use it on a tripod for my cooking channel sometimes, but I'd just stick with the kit lens and save your money for something else, like the 35mm.

    • @confessionsofabombshell4886
      @confessionsofabombshell4886 7 лет назад +1

      This helped a lot thanks so much. I want a Sony camera for vlogging and RUclips videos (beauty tutorials, product reviews). I also would like an additional lens that will zoom into Products etc which would you recommend? Do you think it's really even necessary?

    • @GallaghersGrub
      @GallaghersGrub 7 лет назад +6

      The kit lens is actually pretty good. Start there. It has a decent zoom range and optical steady shot. Since there is no hot shoe for an external mic, it's good to have the wide angle of 16mm (24mm since it's APS-C), that way you can be closer to the camera and the built in mic will pic up your voice better than if the camera is further away.
      Next lens to buy: For all around beautiful pics and video, I'd recommend the Sony SEL35F18 35mm f/1.8 Prime Fixed Lens. It has optical steady shot for video and will take gorgeous pictures too.
      For close up product shots you probably want the Sony SEL30M35 30mm f/3.5 e-mount Macro Fixed Lens. It's not a zoom though. Also, be aware that it does not have optical steady shot which means for video it will be shaky unless mounted on a tripod.
      The Sony SEL50F18/B 50mm takes gorgeous pictures, especially portraits. It also has optical steady shot, but the focal length is usually just a bit too long which means you have to stand far back from your subject. I would not recommended this lens for vlogging.

      Thank you so much for your reply. I see a package deal on Amazon with the body and the body plus a lens (lens choices: 50-50mm f/2.8-16, 50-50mm f1.8-22 or 55-210mm) out of those ones which should I go with or just stick to the body for now (although if I'm going to spend the money I would rather get everything I need all at once). I greatly appreciate your insight 🙏🏾

      yeah but I need that middle button and also the "?" for other customs settings (like back-button autofocus) or magnifier for focusing with adapted lenses.

    I really like the way you do these videos in that you focus on what is likely to be valuable to an ordinary (non-professional, enthusiast, casual) photographer as opposed to the money-is-no-object professional and/or fanatical gear lover types. I started mirrorless with an NEX-5 which I thought was great for the money at the time and had a form factor that was great for travel and casual use. Next I got the a6000, largely because it had a viewfinder, a standard hot shoe, and some buttons and wheels which made it easier to access the settings I changed most of the time. Lastly, I got the a6300 mostly because I liked the improved viewfinder (clearer, built in level etc), the extra buttons, the sturdier weather-resistant build and mount (good for travel), and the 120 fps video (for slow motion videoing of dance moves). To be honest, in most travel situations all three cameras produce similar good quality photos given the same lens and reasonable light. Nevertheless each upgrade to me was worth it based on what matters to me in a camera and makes me want to use it. Things which seem important to some others (4K video, mic input, IBIS, touch screen, overheating with long videos etc) don't really affect me - hence my choice of a6300 over the a6500. To each his/her own :-) Anyway - keep up the good work !!

    A wee tip for the 5100. You don't need to go into the menu to change the mode. Just click the button in the center of the scroller/touchpad - it takes you right there. I have A7, A6500 and A5100. The 5100 is great for portability. It's effectively my point and shoot that I can take in a pocket (and a spare lens in the other pocket). I picked it up used for about $300 (1.5 years ago body only). You just can't beat it for value. I can recommend it to anyone who already has a Sony system. It really is that useful.

      I really only shoot video and am very happy with the picture I can get with the a5000, especially using that 35mm but the auto focusing is very slow, do you think I should get the 6500 or get the 5100 and hold out to see what the new release is all about?

Nice to have in the pocket whilst doing wildlife for a few wide angle landscapes whilst walking around. I also hope to start a little vlogging. Only had it 3 days but loving it. Bargain on eBay for only £70 with 16-50 lens. Can’t wait to get out at the weekend and try it in anger.

    The a6300 has one big advantage over the a6000 you did not mention: While at low ISO the noise of both sensors are comparible, the a6300 has a severe advantage at higher ISOs. At ISO 400 and above the a6300 even beats its fullframe brother a7 and a7II!

    I read that the a6000 does not allow you to set the minimum shutter speed in aperture priority mode while the a6300 does. Can you confirm? This is an important feature b/c with wider lenses, the shutter speed that the camera chooses (usually 1/50) makes aperture priority mode useless when shooting people.

    I bought the a6000 last year for £400 here in the UK. The a6300 was over twice the price at that time. I agree with all your comments including the poor battery life, so always keep a couple of spares in my pocket. Results are brilliant even with the 16-50 kit lens, and the huge ISO range is great for indoor hand held shots where flash & tripods are not permitted. The viewfinder is very good for shots in bright light, and the compact dimensions make it a great travel camera. My Canon SLR is seeing less use as it's sheer bulk & weight makes it a chore to carry at times. My only regret is the price of E fit lenses which are so expensive compared with lenses for my Canon. Overall a great camera which is why Sony are still selling it.

    a5100 is great on gimbal. You can go to a selfie without changing the balance. When you flip up the screen it stays in the same plane as when it's in the normal position.
    I bought my a5100 to live on my gimbal.

  • @BeerBellyDK
    @BeerBellyDK 7 лет назад +8

    Just FYI, you don't need to do a menu dive to switch shooting mode on the a5100, just push the center button on the wheel.
    You do however need to do a menu dive to switch basic settings, as there's no function menu, at least not that i have found. :)
    I ended up picking up a Kamerar QV-1M viewfinder for my a5100 (a5100 is my b cam, and pretty much my go to when it comes to macro photography), and that made the camera a 1000 times more useful when i have it out and about. :) Just don't get a viewfinder that attach via magnets to a metal frame around the screen, as many of the really cheap viewfinders do. Putting a magnet near the top of the screen, triggers it to flip the image, making these kinds of viewfinders pretty much useless.
    I've been really happy with my a6000 which i've had pretty much since they were released. I find it astonishing that the very same model is still on the market so many years later. I've grown so much as a photographer with that camera, it's really quite amazing what it has allowed me to do so far, though there's still a ways to go before i'd be completely satisfied. :)
    I've thought of upgrading to one of the bigger bodies a few times, but i always ended up just getting some glass instead. Imo, that is what will give anyone who shoots with an a6000, the biggest, most notable improvements, providing ofc. that they understand how their camera works to begin with.. :)
    Great comparison, i agree with your conclusion, you really can't go wrong with any of these cameras.

      correct me if I'm wrong, you attached a view finder on a5100? how?

    • @BeerBellyDK
      @BeerBellyDK 7 лет назад

      It's not an electric viewfinder, but an optical one. It attaches to the screen basically. :) You can look up the one i mentioned, it's easy and fast to attach and remove, it uses a manfrotto style base plate, so the camera will fit on most common tripods.
      These kinds of viewfinders were originally used when filming video on a DSLR, on account of the mirror flipping up and blocking the built in viewfinder, when filming. But it makes a camera like the a5100 (and any other that doesn't have an EVF) a hundred times more usable in the sun. :) Though i'll admit, it can look kind of silly. :)

      You get nearly a full stop more dynamic range in the a6300. That's a big deal
      You get 4K, better high iso performance, 250 more AF points, eye detect AF, 1080p120, color profiles, tethering options, audio line in

    in the photo samples, the girsl skin tone is NOTICEABLY different between 5100 adn the 6k. Personally 1st seems more natural, other RED seems boosted all over the photo.

    I used the NEX5-T. Seems to be a predecessor to the a5xxx series. I have been tempted to move up to the a6000 because it is impossible to see the LCD of the NEX/a5xxx in the sunlight but I never understood why the more expnsive a6xxx series do not have touch screens, a feature I find useful for focus tracing and af in general.

    I ended up getting the NEX 5R body for $100 then bought generic batteries and charger for $25. I played with the 5100 a few times the 5r/t just had a better feel overall and dial knob as well. I hope Sony brings this back on the successor to the 5100.

    Thanks for these videos! As a bit of a camera junkie, your videos along with reviews from Ken Rockwell have helped me a ton in deciding which cameras and lenses to get. At the moment, I have the a6000 body, kit lens, 18-105 f/4, and Rokinon 12mm, and photo quality is incredible.
    Is there any chance that you could do any sort of Macro comparison (z.B. Sony macro, vintage, extension tube, cheap filters)? I am quite interested in macro work, but have mostly been doing it with filters I inherited from my grandfather and with cropping from minimum focus on the Rokinon.

    I have a question about the A6000 .. I bought this camera about a month ago to begin my Song journey. I spent the pass month testing it out, both still and video. So I set up my first live shoot with it the other day. Was checking everything out the night before and out of nowhere started getting this error saying that the camera can't read my SD Card..I tried all 7 of my SD cards and got the same message .. went out and bought a new one and got the same message .. I checked online and discovered that this is a common problem with several of Sony's cameras .. is there any fix? right now I have a new camera that I can't use

    Nice nice video keep the cool videos reviews on cameras and camera lenses But there is one error mistake in this video you make (time 7:00) that you stated the we all wanted a touch screen on both Sony a6000 and a6300 model so that's why Sony made or build the new Sony a6500 with touch screen but you are so great both model a6000 and a6300 should been a touch screen I just hope that one day Sony lets us sent our camera to them so they can replace your Sony camera screen turn into a touch screen

    Hi. Coming at this from the "I know nothing " angle. I'm looking to move up from my S7 Edge Phone so want a simple to use camera. At some point, I'll upgrade to DSLRs and manual modes but, not yet. I want a camera with great image quality, mainly used for videos and a bit of vlogging so think the a5100 is best. The overheating is an issue for me. Would shooting at a lower fps instead of 60fps make a difference?
    Hope this makes sense. If not Sony than, I'll to go for a Canon T6S Or 70D
    Thanks.

    • @RemyRongFilms
      @RemyRongFilms 7 лет назад

      Brunellesp always shoot at 24fps when vlogging! If you don't need slow motion don't shoot at 60fps. And yes shooting at a higher frame rate heats up the camera more. You can check out my videos to see what a5100 is capable of! I'm a aspiring filmmaker.

    Thanks for sharing! The only thing would have been nice to see if the image quality in video is the same in 1080p 24 and 60fps (just image quality wise, ofc the focusing is improved on the a6000 and a6300 even more). Did you maybe make that test, did you see any big differences in video IQ (sharpness, dynamic range)

    Hi and greetings from Venice, Italy! I'd like to do short movies and I don't know which camera to choose. A6000 + 35mm f1.8 or A6300+kit lens. This is the budget I have.

Or should I just go for either a5100 or a6000? I like that a5100 is more compact to carry around as I do mostly vlogs but wanting to try out some cinematic kind of films... Both of them shoot at 1080/60p isn't it kinda the same if i dont care for the mode dial and viewfinder? Please enlighten me anybody...

    What my A6000 bothers me a lot is it can never delivery correct white balance when shooting in light box(I mean the box you use for product shoot as light source). I have to use Lightroom every time to adjust the white balance but none of them get back to original color. Am about to sell it and get a EOS M3. Tested and the white balance is as good as other cannon models, impressive! I definitely NOT recommend you to get A6000 if you plan to shoot product photos. I don't know will A6300 or A6500 has same issue though.
