I think I saw a video somewhere that Drew explained what they were and as I recall they are motion sensors that toggle the mic on when someone gets close and then off when they back off.
It's called an Optogate. It's an automatic noise gate that turns the mic off when no one is in front of it, which makes for cleaner stage sound. Pretty neat.
