I know people who have a big house and honestly, they don’t utilize even half of the space they own. They usually fill it with random useless material things. Don’t get me wrong, if you have a big family or you are looking to entertain large groups of friends, I understand why you would want a bigger house. No matter how much money you have, there comes to a point where you are spending too much just to fill a void or impress the neighbors. Many super rich people fall into a pit of despair because they expect the stuff they are buying to make them happier. When it doesn’t happen that way, they get depressed and think something is wrong with themselves; this results in their desire and action of self medicating to buy more junk. It’s a dangerous perpetual cycle. Think about what these ultra rich people do when they are home by themselves or with their immediate family. They can’t be in all the rooms at once, nor can they utilize all that space on a weekly basis. Usually the only time they are happy about the giant place they live in is when they are showing it off to people who haven’t seen it yet.

I feel like, for celebrities anyway, it's because they can't really go anywhere. Going out in public takes so much coordination, and if it's not an exclusive event/restricted access location, they have to consider security, paparazzi, etc. which not only is annoying but costs money. So, they either have to pay for exclusive locations (islands, yachts, friend's vacation homes, etc.) that most people can't access, or they stay home. So they build homes that give a little variety - whether it's water parks, theme parks, movie theaters, basketball courts, casinos, game rooms, lounges, nightclubs, or even shopping malls (Barbara Streisand has one in her house.. because she can't go to normal malls) or whatever else they fancy, it's something different for them to do. That's also why they usually have their own beauty salon, spa, gym, professional grade kitchen, etc. - they can't really go to a normal, public place unless it's super expensive and the staff are bound by NDAs or whatever.
S A agree! We’re retired and going on year 4 of remodeling our large home. 3 kids and 2 businesses (in the home/office) led to our need for space. Now that we’re alone - most of the time 😂 - we are adding all kinds of neat things that we want. We enjoy our home so much we rarely leave. The world can be a crazy place, why not have your own sanctuary?
Very bazaar. I would be too nervous to live on properties that huge. I would have to put cameras everywhere and it would be just paranoia 24/7

Correction. John Travolta didn't build 2 runways, he bough property in a community that was designed for pilots who had their own planes. The runways were already there.

Too much money, too little sense. A house with a basketball court is a little odd, unless you’re a former/current NBA star or just have a lot of time for pick up basketball games. Kanye doesn’t fit in any of these categories, so it looks like a game of one upsmanship.
I don't know if Nick Cage knew all the details about that house. Makes me feel good he didn't finish paying for it and it got forclosed.

wwaxwork Because charging someone more for having more money is like telling you to give up the food you’re about to put in your mouth simply because someone out there is homeless without giving you an option. It’s wrong I’m so many levels. Higher taxes for the rich is a form of socialism. No one who really understands economics and human nature well wants that.

theamazingsamurai, the top one percent pay almost half of all tax revenue. Good! They're still extremely rich. Many of the top earners manage to pay very little.

I'm honestly fine in my house...however I could even be happy with less. Give me a tiny home, a bed, little kitchen, toilet, high speed Internet, and I'm just fine. I don't need such extravagance.

None of my money went to pay for any performer's homes. I don't buy records, go to movies, pay for books, or any of that useless stuff. My house and vehicle are paid for and my credit card balance stays low but my credit rating stays high. Why should I pay for their overpriced ego so they can live like Kings and queens? Too many of them are on drugs, depressed and live an empty life. Mine is full of love and it's comfortable. I wouldn't trade places with any of them. I have all I need or want. I don't "want for anything" and have a lady I love and she loves me.

I've tried the living outside my means and it wasn't fun watching my money pay interest for borrowing. Credit is borrowing from your future life and my life is mine to spend not to make some company or actor rich.
Paying cash for everything you can frees up so much to have more to enjoy life.
I do use credit when I absolutely have to, but with good credit I get a great rate
I even get the credit card to pay me. I use them for the points then pay in full each month, I get the points applied to my account every so often. They pay me!
Instead of using my debit card, charge and pay when due. I'm doing to them what they do to millions.
Set your eyes on the prize and work on it, everyone can do it. First thing is live below your means and use what's left to pay extra on the lowest balance. When that's paid put that amount plus the extra on the next lowest balance.
Interest in against my nature to pay.
If you have good credit there's other tricks to pay them off.
It involves new cards and introductory rates, but it demands you have the determination not to charge anything unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!

@Turd Fergusen no, I don't go out if you mean to bars etc. I have a loving lady, we go out to eat, yard sales, things that interest us and give is education and visit with friends. You assume I don't read? I said I don't buy books. Let me introduce you to to a place I assume you have heard of. It's called a library, you see the books are free to take home and read. Also there's absolutely a plethora of books available FREE on the internet. Plus, this might trigger you but, I read my Bible. And watch preaching on RUclips. You have heard of them I hope.
I enjoy plenty of the FREE videos on RUclips and several other free video services online, yes legal free movies and TV shows!
I use an antenna for all 16 channels I get for free but rarely ever watch it anyway.
My house is paid for as are my 2 vehicles and 25 foot long camper.
I can pay all my utilities for around $130 a month including my satellite internet.
If I want something, I get it. I don't have to see which of my credit cards has credit left on it.
I keep some cash in my wallet and in the bank.
I'm rich in the things that make me happy it doesn't sound like you are very happy and I'm sorry for you if that's true.
Very few can say they are happy and blessed with someone to love and that person loves you just as much.
I don't want for anything I don't have and, believe it or not, I actually have some things I don't need.
What good is it to slave to keep someone else in their BMW or 20,000 SF home?
If that makes you happy, I'm happy for you, it just never did it for me. My life is mine and my lady's for whom I will do anything possible to make her happy, and she feels the same way about me.

You sound bitter because I don't want to go into debt, or patronize people in movies with my money, I am what was once called "low maintenance". I am college educated, I have owned 3 fairly successful businesses in the many years I've lived, I've been very well off, and I've worked for minimum wage when that was only 95 cents an hour. Yes under a dollar per hour, I've been a police officer, both county sheriff and with the department of defense, I've given my time as a volunteer firefighter, coach, referee and scoutmaster. I've written and sold computer programs, (I can build a computer from pieces) I've built my own home entirely by myself (at age 64 btw).
I could astound you with all that I know and the jobs I've held.
I've lived a good life and had a good lifetime. I'm satisfied with where I am now more than where I've ever been. I'm not afraid of dying, I know what happens then. (No need to try to mock me, I am solid in God so you'd just waste time on it)
I know you won't understand but the old saying, "he who dies with the most toys wins" but they are still dead and the family will fight over their stuff.
I live by, "enjoy your life here, live well and look to heaven for direction and a wonderful welcome when I retire from this Earth."
I hope someday you might realize there's much more to life than getting stuff, going places and doing things. These are but a vapor.
I guess I do have a mental problem, I'm happy when most are not, I'm satisfied with what I have I'm not greedy, I'm loved and I love.
Most important is I'm a free person not enslaved to my monthly payments.

I am amazed, that all these people who could make real differences in this world waste money. I think money is stupid to begin with but, if you have a crazy amount of it, why not change the world. I think life and others lifes are more important than a huge house that is impractical/barely used. I am not a hater, just the opposite they should live out their dreams. Let's just use a little common intelligence and see that they could use that money in ways we could only dream of when it comes to helping other. I get way more enjoyment helping people than buying expensive things. Also I am not just saying give people money, I am saying that setting up accounts in investments and businesses for charities and the average person could make such a difference.
