  • 24th of January 1984 News broadcast montage of the Karrabee and efforts to refloat her.See a young Tim Webster and other presenters now long gone. There were no injuries or deaths. Karrabee went on to be a floating restaurant at Gosford NSW but now sadly has been scraped. I do not own any copyright content of this footage but I have uploaded this for historical reasons. Also great to see Brian Henderson and the Late Eric Walters doing the news.....Australian TV news in the mid 1980s.......

Built in 1913, started service in 1920. 64 years of service - amazing it hadn't been retired

I miss old Sydney. It was beautiful.
These reports bring the old feel back.
I'm surprised how modern the production values of the news reports looked.
Why did they try and stop the news camera filming? No free press in Australia back then? It looked concerning to me.
Amazing recovery effort. Just shows NSW governments can move mountains when they have the will.

So close to being a real disaster what a screw up. A few minutes earlier she would have gone down to the bottom taking a couple of hundred passengers with her.

The first time I realised this ended up on the news - I was on that boat - it was an exciting race and I thought they were shouting at us to get off in a hurry because we could not count as 3rd place until everyone was off. LOL - it was quite an event!

Well considering the poor Old Gal was taking on water she did a great job to finish the race let alone 3rd place with that disadvantage, And thats the main difference between the Karrabee and the Titanic, At least Sydney ferries have the decency to get to the wharf before sinking and good work to the Crew that day to get everybody off saftley

I wish to add some detail to the description. According to information I heard back in 1988, Karrabee wasn't technically a floating restaurant. Reportedly, she was positioned to rest solidly on the bottom. Some people I knew dined on her and said the food, which had been cooked in the Aquatic Club (later Iguana Joe's), wasn't very hot when it was served. They said it wasn't good value for money.
As for the sinking, I remember a photo of it on the front page of The Sun.

The fact that the ferry was able to float unaided after dewatering operations indicates that the water (which destabilised her to the degree that her decks submerged and she sank) was taken on board during the race when she carried 350 people and was travelling at high speed through choppy seas!
To have allowed the vessel to have taken on such a dangerously high volume of water during their high speed run was recklessly negligent of the Captain and Bridge Officers.
They endangered the lives of everyone on board and it was simply good luck that the last passenger was literally just able to disembark before the ferry sank at her berth.
To have recklessly endangered the lives of so many people simply to race a fully loaded vesselthat was never designed for such an event in choppy seas was an atrocious lack of good judgement and an act of extremely poor seamanship!

Wasn't the problem of it sinking had something to do with the bilge pumps being clogged up with general rubbish and they could not work properly. I was also there when it happened. I was 13 back then.

Regardless they were still both taking on water, Where Titanic just sat there unloading passangers into life boats in calm seas and the passangers who survived had a couple of hours wait for the nearest ship the carpathia to arrive. Where as the Karribee although taking on water competed in the annual sydney ferry race came 3rd in choppy waters due to other vessels and still got back to the wharf, where the is the Titanic now and where is the Karribee now hey
