- "The winner is Sydney". News footage recorded on the morning of Sept 24, 1993 showing Sydney Australia winning the right to host the 2000 Olympics. Also reaction from the unsuccesful cities, Beijing and Manchester.
28 years later: Here we are. Brisbane is hosting in 11 years.
And nobody gives a goanna’s bum hole in these current times.

We are just 9 years to go until the Olympic Games returns to Australia for the Brisbane Olympic Games
and the sydney 2000 olympics were the greatest Olympic games of all time, they were that perfect.
+Sam's Movies Sydney 2000 Olympics was pretty good. That was until Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 took it to the next level.
joesakic91 Sydney has been recognised by the Olympic president to being the best prepared, the best run of all modern games. The Sydney stadium was finished 18 months before the opening ceremony, Rio was barely finished
joesakic91 have you seen the rio stadiums all closed and never in use?? Or what about in 2008 when China built a wall to hide all the poverty?? Ahaha good times
joesakic91 la 2028 is gonna be epic

Currently seconds away from the announcement of the winner of the 2032 Olympic Games - hopefully we win it for Brisbane!
"The winner is Brisbane, Australia!"
Hope was successful!
I’m just going for Sydney
there were no other contesting cities it was a one man race
The best Games ever and the best decision ever, I guess. Sydney 2000 was just unprecedented and still number one.
I agree :)
Beijing and Sydney hands down.
100% agree
Sydney nailed it
The English bloke called it. The world was obsessed with the new Millennium, the year 2000 represented the start of a new world. Sydney/Australia was the perfect representation for this. The better city won, and that was proven at the games.
IOC offering Brisbane, Queensland to host the 2032 Summer Olympics next month brought me here.
Imagine this guy in the year 3000 announcing "The winner is Sydney" again 😁
I kinda doubt that guy will still be alive 1000 years later. I wonder if the modern English language will still exist for those words to be said?
Yea he'd still alive in robotic form. @@rorysnow7937
We gotta make it there first lol
The Year 2000, can't beat that!!
And it is Sydney's postcode too which makes it even more fitting.
I wish I had lived in the year 2000.
@@reecepickett9972 I was 16 in Year 10 in 2000. Time has certainly flown.
Who’s here after seeing Brisbane take it for 2032? So happy it’s coming back!!
Me.
Me
Me too.
Back where it belongs and every seat will be filled.
It's your turn now brisbane :) make Sydney proud :)
I think Sydney was the best olympics. I do remember seeing the torch run through Liverpool, through Macquarie Street I think. I don't live there anymore but still remember the buzz about the olympics around Sydney.
watching this i was more amazed that oil was only 17.88 haha
Lol at the Brits having a whinge
gizdonk Nothing new there really, lol.
In 1991, the British Olympic Association selected Manchester over London to be the British representative to bid for the 2000 Summer games. After Manchester's defeat, the BOA said that any future Olympic bid England makes, it would be London the only city they thought had a chance winning an Olympic bid.
5:52 those premature celebrations! 😂😂😂
RIP Ian Ross.
This was truly the best time in Australian history. It was a happier time

3:45 What a moment!
It was the greatest moment in Australia and New South Wales back then!
Gold: Sydney
Silver: Beijing
Bronze: Manchester
Bryan Yancy Yeah, I love that one! Berlin and Istanbul got NO medals.
Now compare that with the embarrassing circumstances under which Palachook completely and disgracefully embarrassed our country in Tokyo 🙄
I turned 9yrs old when the Sydney 2000 Olympics games opening ceremony Sydney.
Awww, I wanted to know what authorities in the United States knew before it was cut off at the end.
Yeah cause it’s not like you can just look it up
For some reason I was half expecting Karl Stefanovic to appear after seeing the "TODAY" title. And I was old enough to remember 1990's TODAY as well...
I would love to see the Olympics back in Australia again. But there are serious comments about an african nation hosting the olympics in 2024, specially South Africa. Nonetheless I hope to see any australian city hosting the olympics in the near future. Greetings and the best of luck from Panama City, Panamá.
Looks like Brisbane is getting in a decade or so.
Currently 2 minutes before the announcement of the winner of the 2032 Olympic Games - will update if we win it for Brisbane!
The deed is done.
Was celebrating with all my uni mates 1993 Western Sydney University - Kingswood campus. Best Olympics ever!

Who knew the Sydney Olympics is 20 years old
One of the best nights of my life....cheering on top of a bus heading up George st...LOL!
And China ended up getting the 2008 summer olympics and later the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Wow i wasn't even born yet when this happened :/ makes me feel really young even though im 21. It's amazing how times have changed i can't see everyone getting behind this now. We'd all just be bloody pissed that the government was wasting more bloody money lol
+ClarksonHammond&May I recall seeing it and wondering what the big deal was, 93 I was 11 years old living in Melbourne, still don't know what the fuss is about really.
Thing is games like this (despite the spending required) do generate more money than they cost to host them. It's a boon for local industry and economy so probably we wouldn't be so cynical.
gav240z
Melbourne hey
yup
I was very young and don't remember this but I remember the games and it was one of the most exciting times in our country and a great memory of my childhood. I disagree though that people wouldn't get behind it, we still love our sport and Olympic Games so much here. I think one of our cities will host again hopefully before I'm really old lol and we will try to do even better than last time.
I don’t agree
yep, exactly what's happened here in brisbane when it was announced. We all were pissed bc the stupid ex-premier anastacia palachook was gonna waste more money
That reporter had balls saying stuff about the Tiananmen Square massacre INSIDE Tiananmen Square.

Thank you for posting this! How nostalgic.
Mr. Samaranch forget to say the Games is awarded to the city of Sydney!
#BBCSPORTS THE WINNER IS SYDNEY! 🇦🇺
BRISBANE 2032. ELEVEN YEARS TO GO!!
Sydney held the best Olympics ever
I never forget how the City was a buzz when we won the games and then having the privilege of hosting them.
7:34 At Least Pete Waterman was honest, Sydney used modern songs when it hosted the Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies, The British Olympic team for London didn't learn when it hosted the 2012 Olympics, they still used the classics for the closing ceremony, and One Direction, Jessie J and Tinie Tempah and Taio Cruz didn't help either because they are not real popstars, I would've had Steps, S Club 7, Five, Atomic Kitten and A1 peform in the Closing Ceremony.
I was 6 years old when this happened. I remember seeing it in the morning on TV and being so excited. The olympic torch went passed my house on the day of the opening ceremony. It's a pity we didn't get any photos. My Mum bought a brand new camera. We set it up on the day the torch was going by and the stupid thing didn't work. It was DOA out of the box.
Totally get you..I was 9. Now a dad with 2 kids. Can't watch this video without tears. What a moment

Manchester, tell em they're dreaming!
Wow, I was 12yo that year, in year 7
A very special games. It was the first Olympic games i’ve ever seen in my life.

Brasilia had no chance of winning the bid for the 2000 games. In the IOC's evaluation report of all the bidding cities, Sydney had the highest marks when it came to infrastructure, the ability & readiness to host the games, Brasilia had the lowest, citing "the total apparent absence of contact of sport" in their bid plans & the cities substandard facilities. Brasilia is a city that was built from the ground up in 1960.
You can't expect to bid for an Olympics when you have close to nothing.
Simply boasting that you have an airport, main stadium and arena is nothing. Especially when your subway network is still a proposal.
R.I.P Juan Antonio Samaranch former president of IOC.
At least both these countries eventually got it.
Michael Brown Except London hosted 2012 and not Manchester.
1:54 I’m pretty sure that’s Juan Antonio Samaranch, not Bruce Baird. Great Job, Nine News 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for uploading.
Back when people cared about things
What a stupid meaningless comment
I didn't know Manchester was a bid for the 2000 games.
+YuGiOhFan 1999 Manchester also bid for the 1996 Summer Olympics as well.Birmingham made a bid for the 1992 Summer Olympics.
I have the 1996 Manchester bid books. Too ambitious, they scaled it down to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
Bostonians are currently celebrating - the USOC rejected us for the 2024 bid! (Seriously, NO ONE wanted the Olympics)
+electrogeek77 Los Angeles 2024!
Kyle Chang isn’t Sydney Olympic Park pretty well used though?
gizdonk It is to a certain extent. The main stadium and the basketball venue next door hold most of the city’s major sporting events and big concerts. A lot of commercial activity there these days.

Stayed awake until about 3am or 4am our time (Australia) to see what the decision was and was told by my best friend I only had permission to ring & wake him up if we won. Poor him when I rang his phone about 3.30am ;)
I had been visiting interstate for work in Melbourne in the year (1989? Idk) when the 1996 host nation was announced - went to a pub where the IOC announcement was broadcast on a big screen and everyone was devastated when Atlanta was announced as winner
Well the Chinese since have come and raided Australia ever since, not only that but to find out why we won the bid and not them , just look at our fresh clean clear air for starters
now it's 2012 fuck times have past haha

And what a disaster we had because of it.
We can thank Bob Carr and NSW Labor for getting in two years later as a result for the city being a disaster since. It's now an Asian shithole these days.
wait is this true? I haven't seen the news in a few months. Is the Olympics really going to Sydney?
Yes!!!! Wohooo!!!!

+1234 GET ON DA DANCE FLOOR that is the funniest and best reply I have ever read in my life, you are a fucking classic👍
yes..... in the year 2000
the signs in the video even said sydney 2000
Now Brisbane 2032 ❤
Id like to note the hundreds of homes in Newington that are poorly built and falling apart 20 yrs later. Almost every house has dead BP solar panaels tjhat cost a fortune to replace . If you add in the epic pollution in homebsh bay that was never cleaned up. And the piles of contaminated dirt still there today (those mound loookouts in HBB), and it really destroys the claims they made about the "green games"
Tbf it was the Liberals that got us the Games. The NSW Labor Party (who was useless then and even more useless now) got into office 2 years later and pretty much tried to turn it into their socialist utopia by taking it into their western Sydney heartland. Had Bob Carr never beaten the now late John Fahey in the 1995 NSW state election I somehow doubt the Games would've been predominantly in western Sydney.
Brisbane 2032
Hmm, no report from Berlin (although another Today show coverage video shows it). They claimed that they had most of the venues there (many legacy from the 1936 Olympics), but would still needed to build a new aquatics centre, velodrome, arenas and other specific venues. The Germans clearly had too much on their plate at the time of just being 3 years out of Reunification. There were clearly more pressing matters than the symbolic Olympics, even if they claimed that it could be done.
Whatever happened in Berlin, Istanbul and even Brasilia, who, incidentally, withdrew from the bidding?
Berlin, Manchester and Beijing all failed to host it
Sebastian Vinnicombe Don't forget Istanbul.
OverwatchDude 2000 oh yeah
Beijing eventually hosted in 2008 and then London in 2012
A sixth bidding city, Brasilia, withdrew from the draw at the last minute, as I was told.
No Milan withdrew, Brasilia wasn't chosen as a Candidate city. They produced the books like Milan, but what did they have exactly? An Airport, a main stadium, an arena? The subway was just being proposed.
Perhaps if Brazil wants the Olympics again, Brasilia might work, who knows?
Tashkent was also bidding for the games too
Homebush is deserted
Olympic Park Station is barely used
Sydney 2000 could have done so much more for the city
mahlstadt The stadiums are being used well though. Homebush isn’t that bad, people still live their.
It is being used. I go swimming at the aquatic centre. All venues are being used.
mahlstadt olympic park is still used so much what are you on about?
