Definitely one of the top 5 best swimmers of all-time in the history of the sport! Few swimmers have had such a powerful kick. What a competitor and nothing but a credit to swimming. SYDNEY 2000 what an Olympics! Thanks for the incredible memories Ian Thorpe!!
I will never get tired of seeing this. So proud. And yet everyone in the pool was swimming their hearts out for their country. So, a little heart goes out for all. Dennis Cometti, greatest sports caller of all time.
I was lucky to see and visit Sydney, Australia in 1997 and 1998. I was in the US Navy at the time...Ian Thorpe is one of those Olympic swimmers I admire the most, beside Alexander Popov and Pieter Van den Hoogenband. He's the reason I got so interested in swimming, he inspired me to learned to swim freestyle. We miss you Ian Thorpe, I got saddened that your swimming career didn't last very long.
The dude moves through the water like it's his natural habitat. like he glides effortlessly. Phelps can have the Butterfly crown, Thorpedo was nothing short of a fish.
@@elmonoconzapatos7159 talking Olympics....not that many interested/watch the WC unless you are really in the swimming world..... Olympics is watched worldwide.... js.
I think the Americans, with the exception of Anthony Ervin's lead off leg, all made the mistake of going out too fast in order to make up the deficit, because you can see them fade heavily down the last 15 meters. Australia's swimmers did the exact opposite.
I expected that from Gary Hall, he specialised in 50m freestyle, so it was natural for him to go out very fast. Thorpe was a endurance freestyler, maybe that's the reason, knowing the american freestylers, to put him in anchor
My birthday is sep 16. My wife surprised me with the harbour bridge climb. Coincidentally saw the start of the triathlon from the top of the bridge. Amazing memory
Unbelievable! The singer from Midnight Oil abandons the music scene, patriotically joins the Aussie team then swims the fastest 100m to assist the 4x100 relay team in winning gold.
Um, no mate. You are thinking of Peter Garrett, who yes, did "abandon" the music scene, but not to swim. He became a politician caused a heap of controversy, before wisely quitting that and returning to form as a signer once more.
That wasnt thorpe's race, it was klim's. We won by less than a 10th of a second and had TWO world records in the one race. thorpe wasnt fastest klim was
And we saw Gary Hall's comments about smashing the Australians like rock guitars was completely taken out of context. He was complimenting the Aussies in that article, and everyone just focuses on that one comment.
Actually, know. Not an offensive comment. He's complimenting the Australians, and he says his biased opinion was that "we'lll smash them like rock guitars." Not an offensive comment. He said the the US always rises to the occasion. He compliments the Aussies, and makes one opinion, and suddenly, he's being said to have guaranteed US victory.
I agree it wasn't offensive, but it was stupid. Don't ever give your opposition "bulletin board" material to motivate them. That is why so many athletes give very boring, bland interviews.
We have over 20 million thank you but yes :) We are small in population compared to the UK, Canada and America but we still bring the heat! 🇦🇺 Loved that air guitar 🎸 Australia 🤣

Ian Thorpe, one of the most brilliant swimmers in the history of the sport. What an incredible athlete.

Cometti met the moment that night like very few could! What a pro!
Gary Hall...... son, you did NOT blow it. You and your team were magnificent. All the same....what a great night to be an Aussie!~

I miss Ian Thorp He is a legend
Michael Phelps is recognized the greatest swimmer in the world but without a doubt, Ian Thorpe is the fastest middle distant freestyler ever !

@Matthew Fielding because he was only 15 making his first olympics when almost noone ever did at that age at that time....
@@AMilo-qm4ed and thorpe won gold at world championships back in 1998, when he was 15

What a legend Thorp was, sprinter middle distance swimmer, it’s hard nowadays to find such a swimmer who is outstanding in 100m as well as 400m
Ian Thorpe is my favorite swimmer

This was the best moment in the Sydney Games, forget our Cathy, this stuff works...

Ian Thorp ❤️❤️❤️❤️
had goosebumps watching this :)
There's nothing better than seeing the Seppo's get beat & it doesn't matter by who. It's great to see that arrogant smirk wiped off their faces
Loved the Sydney Olympics
That was the day the Thorpedo was born.
Oooh my favourite Olympic games!
Ian Thorp made a history
Lan thorpe♥

Yes of course Klim played a huge part in setting Australia up but Thorpe chased Gary down who is a sprinter unlike Ian, beating him by a touch!

A stupid and offensive comment, by the way... Not necessary ...

It’s kind of like Popov.
Lance Bass?
this is the bud greenspan documentary
Ohh,how i wished I would be on your side at this moment, you're so lovely 😍 Ian Thorpe my idol.
Is everyone okay?
That was cool
This was about the 2000 Olympics regarding Australia, but an American commentator and a dialogue about how great the Americans are? WOW!
He was not saying that
What a complete misrepresentation on your part.
Wooooooo BRISBANE
You didn't blow it you just weren't the best on the night. Admit it!
The presenters voice doesn’t match the documentary, usual guy sick? They had to get the murder mystery guy in from the other studio?

body suit🙊🙈🙉
I loathe these so so American videos masquerading as non aligned general Olympic films
Seeing their suits and goggles is so weird... I can't believe this was only 13 years ago and those were the world class suits and goggles
