    This video is the best explanation I’ve seen on RUclips. Do allowable ball joint movement allowances very from state to state

      Shane, the specifications on ball joints are safety specs and are established by the vehicle manufacturer. The different states may have different inspection requirements and procedures.

    Hello,
    So I thought this was great info for checking loose ball joints, but I think people often overlook seized ball joints as well? They are just as dangerous. From my understanding, you want to also take off the tie rod and make sure the wheel can move side to side freely, since a seized ball joint won't allow it to do so. Not all ball joints become loose, many start seizing up as they fail. Your input on this would be appreciated.
    Great video.

      It wasn't a ball joint in my case. I broke a tie rod end. My brother brought up I should check stuff like that. I reminded him that we did 2 weeks before, and everything was tight, and he helped me. Figured it was tight like you're saying.

    I've been at it for 50 years. This is how I do it. I have recently added moving the wheel through the full range of the turning arc and check for looseness. I missed a loose ball joint because of checking in the general straight ahead direction only. Great video. Thanks!

    "how are your ball joints?"
    "I don't know, let me go remove them all & apply a torque wrench to them quick"

    As a mechanic/technician I understand that the specs are listed- allowable movement - so many thousandths of an inch, but legitimately if you can see and feel the play - the part is worn out.

      Not true If they wanted no movement they would state that. It is not a perfect world.

      Some ball joints have play out of the box, by design.

    Dude, someone just called the shop and said they saw a bj check procedure using a rubber band to determine if it was by comparing it. The channel lock test is my other pet peave.

    Never seen anyone ever using a dial indicator, like to have seen the procedure of read it while moving the wheel.

    In the first vehicle (McPherson suspension)in your video, do you have to jack up the front so both front wheels are off the ground, or is it ok to have just one wheel lifted?

    • @GarageGurus
      @GarageGurus  6 лет назад +1

      The job would be easier with both wheels off the ground. You may have to steer the strut to access the ball joint. Sometimes removing the tie rod and sway bar link allows you pivot the strut and have better access to the ball joint.
