  • These little stove canisters can be pretty pricey! Here I show you how to fill them from your own home, really cheap!
    EDIT 3/27/2018 - I have found out from viewers that you can get these from china on ebay for $1.80. Here is the link
    www.ebay.com/itm/Gas-Refill-A...
    Please know that this video is for DEMO PURPOSES only. This is how I do it and it works for me. Fill the canisters at your own risk.

    The butane bottles are all 8 oz. each and the notch is designed to be used for the butane stoves common in Asian food markets usually sold for $5 for a 4pack.

    i just made one out of the plastic adapter that lighter refill canisters have. Choose the adapter with same diameter of the naked valve, cut a slit/drill hole on the side at about 2 mm from the nozzle. Done
    or simply cut a slit (2 mm from nozzle) on those lighter refiller canisters with plastic nozzle

    If you want the propane mix get a G-Works canister-to-canister adapter and transfer fuel from the large 16oz IsoPro canisters.

      This is what I do. I only buy fuel in the large cans and refuel a small or medium can with as much as I need for a trip. Saves a lot of money because you're getting a better value for the large cans (only half the $/gram vs the small cans) and you never need to take more fuel than you need or worse, a partially used can with a new full one which saves a lot of pack weight.

    I have read that Propane stores at a higher pressure than Butane does.. Thus Jet Boil ect use mostly a butane mix so they can use a lighter cannister that id designed to store gas at a lower pressure..
    A pure Propane Cannister must be made of thicker stronger metal to with stand 800 PSI .. Since this is a low volume cannister and rather rare they can charge a higher price for them .. I have not yet figured out what pressure Butane liquifies at.. in Propane you never fill a cylinder over 80% full with liquid .. New 10 & 20 LB Propane tanks have a float valve shut off system you they can't be over filled ..

    Theres a YT video showing how to make your own adapter from a butane lighter part and a piece of stainless tube (from lowes or Home depot) and model airplane fuel line. it works well and cost is probably only a few bucks, but supplies would make several adapters. I believe it is titled "how to refill butane canisters" or something similar.

    Is butane any better or more efficient than propane? Just curious I use single burner on 1lb bottles for lots of things including heat in my shed.. So I just found refilling those.. I can't get them full but everything is below freezing so I think it would work better if I can warm up the 20lb I fill them from.. Essentially both my empty and full tanks are frozen but... It's cheaper to run the stove over just running my fish fryer off the 20lb.. Which is cheaper than running the tank mounted brick or mrbuddy type heaters... For my small space.. Maybe in a bigger shed!

    Isobutane is NOT 75% butane / 25% propane mix (or a mix of gases at all). Isobutane is an isomer of butane, having the same chemical formula as regular butane (aka n-butane), but a different spatial configuration. Because of that, isobutane's boiling point is 11 degrees Celsius/19 degrees Fahrenheit lower, meaning it has better performance in the cold or high elevation than n-butane. The stuff in the canister IS a mix, however - but it is a mix of 75% isobutane (not butane) / 25% propane.

    • @jamesaritchie1

      I refill with one hundred percent butane. Cold weather is simply not a problem, if you know how to keep the canister warm. It's not difficult.

      James Ritchie How do you keep the canister warm?

    • @tonyjackson5115
      @tonyjackson5115 6 лет назад +2

      set it on top of a hand warmer. If you're running your stove at full tilt for an extended period of time it may get too cold anyway. as the can gets depleted the liquid gas (because it's under pressure) expands (because its still a gas (vapor)) and gets cold.

      NJ Chris :) Yea; china/korea realized there is a market for it; and thank god for that. Made very little sense to have a disposable metal cartridge. • @njchris9654
      @njchris9654  9 лет назад

      i have not for the sole reason that i believe butane is cheaper and it works for me... I can buy 300 grams of butane (10 ounces) for a buck... If i buy an expensive adapter to save another 5 cents per fill its just not worth it haha... this adapter is cheap and it works so well.... been refilling the same tank for 2 years now

    • @farzamg7405
      @farzamg7405 9 лет назад

      NJ Chris makes sense. In my case I want to move to a single source of fuel(propane) for all appliances so that would've been helpful. just ordered the adapter... seems its been redesigned but look forward to putting it to good use. btw. they don't recommend refilling the cans more than 4 times, but some others don't recommend filling them at all!!! :) happy camping....

  • @bigskytroutbum

    So, Chris (or anyone else) ....if I can find that propane adapter you mention at 4:13, is there any reason I can't go with 100% propane? A lot cheaper, reportedly delivers the same BTUs, and no empty butane refill cans going into the landfill. I don't see anyone doing it here on RUclips, so is there a safety issue of some sort? Would very much appreciate any replies. Thanks.

    • @bigskytroutbum

      @@mintymush4259 Yeah, several people have warned me about that elsewhere on this site. Actually, since I posted that I found the appropriate hardware and have been refilling with 100% propane (at a cost of roughly 35 to 45 cents for the small 250g canisters, depending on the price of bulk propane). I backpack upwards of 100 days a year and burn 15-20 canisters of fuel a season, so most of my canisters have been refilled several times. This is important however: I did learn the hard way to avoid overfilling the canisters. I tried to cheat and overfill by about 10% of the original net weight, i.e., putting 275 grams into a 250 gram canister and had it fail. Didn't explode, but just opened a split next to the valve, and my kitchen suddenly smelled like propane. So, it's very important to use a digital scale ($8-10 on eBay) to keep track of how much propane is going in and stay at the net weight posted on the canister - which is often less than the big number on the label (Several brands sell "250" canisters that hold 220g of fuel.) . Kind of a pain in the butt, as you have to disconnect from the hose to get an accurate reading, but eventually you get a feel for it and can tell when you're getting close. If you accidentally go over weight, release the excess immediately. Probably not going to level your house and the ones next door, but not worth screwing around with. Aside from cost, I resisted switching over to canister stoves because I didn't like the idea of throwing 15-20 canisters a year into the landfill, but now that I've cracked the code on refills, it's working very well for me. I use the same username on Gmail if you have any other questions or need a link to the hardware that works. Hope this helps.

      The 20% space is there to allow thermal expansion of the liquid, it is a convention when filling bulk (20lb) refillable propane tanks, correctly sized OPD valve helps to ensure that
      The EN417 standard allows max 13.2 bar (at 50C)
      www.en-standard.eu/bs-en-417-2012-non-refillable-metallic-gas-cartridges-for-liquefied-petroleum-gases-with-or-without-a-valve-for-use-with-portable-appliances-construction-inspection-testing-and-marking/

    Useless in the winter since butane's boiling temp is 30F. Isobutane is much higher in quality and the propane gives it winter usability. Filling with pure propane puts you at risk because these canisters are not manufactured to withstand the higher boiling pressures of propane and you might have a surprise in warmer weather... kaboom. Stick with the manufactured ones and happy camping.

    dude; is this video about your subject matter or about your face? also; maybe work on "adapting" your lighting if you are going to make a decent presentation. You can do better!

      Dino DiNaso - Good Lord man! Are you really that much of a jerk? Such a high level insulting and rude critique from such a benign and yet helpful spirited video... I suggest you sit down and take a deep look inside of yourself and ask yourself what you can do to personally improve your own character... / NJ Chris - Thank you for the video Sir, and I know that back in 2014, there was a lot less to know about these types of procedures.... I remember looking and finding very little. Good video!!
